Pups on SUPS More than a dozen canines floated down the Maitai River on Sunday – all in the name of a good cause. About 20 dogs and 35 participants had a paddle down the Maitai as part of “Pups on SUPs (Stand Up Paddleboards”, raising over $300 for Nelson Ark, which rescues unwanted dogs and pairs them with disengaged young people. The idea was a collaboration between Moana Stand Up Paddleboards and Share My Pet. Lili Wenzel of Share My Pet, an online pet sharing platform, says that the idea was to encourage people to get out and about, and normalise animals as part of our everyday lives. Air NZ meets with Smith over price hikes Matt McCrorie Air New Zealand is looking at its regional pricing structure after a ‘please explain’ meeting with Nelson MP Nick Smith that sought to calm commuters’ fears about airfare hikes.

And Nick says if action isn’t taken, a complaint to the Commerce Commission could be on the cards. The meeting came on the back of the Nelson Weekly revealing that the airline had lifted its Nelson prices by upwards of 18 per cent year on year, even before its competitor Jetstar

pulled out of the region. Nick took those complaints to top Air New Zealand bosses last week to advocate for fairer fares for the region. He is also asking for transparency in how the airline makes its pricing decisions. Nick says that he has been

inundated with concerns from locals about a sharp rise in airfares since Jetstar pulled out of the Nelson region at the end of November 2019. “Nelson is an isolated region, geographically, and air services are crucial to our links with the

rest of the country.” He says many small and medium businesses that run out of the region provide nationwide services that can’t compete if they are paying excessively for flights.

“It almost seems like people have been hit with a dose of terrorism to me.”

“I can understand how people feel but at the same time it is a virus and panic buying isn’t going ot protect you from anything.”

“People just love to panic buy don’t they? If it’s a long weekend people will take everything off the shelves anyway.”

“I think it’s ridiculous! I think it’s disrespectful to the elderly and the needy as it’s not as easy for them to get and there’s no need for it.”

Air NZ meets with Smith over price hikes FROM PAGE 1 “Our tourism sector also relies on competitive airfares.” Nick says that he made the point about how important air links are to the Nelson and Tasman communities. “Air New Zealand acknowledged that with Jetstar’s withdraw, there has been an increase in demand which has increased the average price.” He says more transparency is needed from airlines, especially from a company where the Government owns 52 per cent of shares. “In many jurisdictions, like the United States and European Union, airlines are required to disclose average airfares by sector. I think the public has the right to know what the average fare is to know whether you’re getting price gouging.”

Air New Zealand says it is looking into its pricing structure. Photo: Supplied. National has released a transport discussion document that has raised the policy change of requiring airlines to disclose information, like average airfares. “I think more transparency is required.” Air New Zealand told Nick that the airline needed to take on board some of the criticism around prices, and that the company is

currently undertaking a 100-day, business-wide review to form its future direction. While he’s hopeful that progress will be made around high airfares, Nick is not ruling out lodging a complaint to the Commerce Commission. “I want to give them a fair opportunity to respond to my concerns about unaffordable fares, and I am hopeful that it may result

ginning

in a change in price and policy for centres like Nelson where they have close to a monopoly.” In the meantime, he is encouraging people to use the services provided by both OriginAir and Sounds Air to give the larger company some competition. An Air New Zealand spokesperson said that the meeting Nick had with chief revenue officer Cam Wallace and Head of Tourism and Regional Affairs Reuben Levermore was “productive”. “We have taken onboard Nick Smith’s comments and provided him with some additional Nelson data as requested at the meeting.” According to the data provided by Air New Zealand, seats on services on Nelson routes have increased by more than 130,000 in the last five years. Over this period, the average fare on our Nelson services has fallen, while costs per seat have increased.

Former mayor Kerry Marshall dies Staff Reporter Former Nelson and Tasman Mayor Kerry Marshall has been remembered as a dedicated public servant and visionary leader with a great sense of humour. Kerry, who died last Tuesday, was a former teacher who made a career in local government, becoming mayor of three territorial authorities: Richmond borough (1986– 1989), Tasman (1989–1998), and Nelson (2007–2010). Current Nelson mayor Rachel Reese told the Nelson City Council’s environment committee that Kerry’s life was one of service. “That is a length of service that stands out in local government,” she said. Marshall was also the Presiding Member of the NZ Lotteries Commission and Chair of the New Zealand Conservation Authority until 2008. In the 1989 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Kerry was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to local government. He was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal in 1990, the Sir Jack

Kerry Marshall Newman Award to Nelson’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year awarded by the Rotary Club of Nelson in 1999, and the United States Information Service Study Award to the United States, also in 1999. “Kerry served as mayor for Nelson City Council between 2007 and 2010, and I learnt so much from him as his supporting deputy mayor during that time.” Rachel says he was visionary in his approach to climate change, declaring in 2010 that it was time for a disciplined and precautionary approach. “Kerry also saw the danger of not investing in city centres, launching the Heart of Nelson strategy in 2009 that

forms the basis of the work that continues to this day in making sure Nelson has a thriving central city. “He was, most of all, a man who loved people and the people of this beautiful region most of all, his life was one of incredible service to the people of Nelson.” Tasman Mayor Tim King says he did all this work with a great sense of humour and was welcomed as an entertaining public speaker wherever he went. “There is no doubting Kerry’s passion for the region having served on both Nelson and Tasman councils and prior to that with the Richmond Borough Council. Many of the decisions he guided through the respective chambers during this time prepared the area to be one of the country’s fastest growing regions. “It was important for him that we retained what was special about the region in the face of the inevitable growth we are experiencing now. “At the heart of all his work was the need to cater for the people he served throughout the Top of the South.” There will be a memorial service on March 28 at Nelson College at 2pm.

Fringe lifeline after

earthquake risk closes buildings

New earthquake-prone building assessment criteria have been introduced since the building was first assessed, and a subsequent review in February found more work is required, including geotechnical analysis. The next steps for both buildings will be considered through the annual plan 2020/21 process, and in consultation with the community. Group manager community services Roger Ball says they are being mindful on the impact the closures will have on users. “We recognise the inconvenience closing these buildings has on those who use them, and we will do our best to minimise the

When the news came through last week that the venue for Nelson’s Fringe Festival was being shut down because of earthquake risk, the team behind it were in shock. “We’re only seven weeks out and The Refinery has been our home since 2015,” says festival director Laura Irish. “There’s no other venue in town that can house us for the same price and changing it now is a huge upheaval.” But luckily, the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts has come to the rescue, offering their second performance venue for the festival. “The Fringe isn’t the normal

vibe of the NCMA,” says Laura. “For a week, it will be merging the classical and the quirky. We’ve been offered a really amazing deal, it’s a state-of-theart space, and technical-wise, it’s a big upgrade from The Refinery. We’re very grateful.” The Fringe Festival is only one user to be displaced after Nelson City Council announced the closure of two buildings last week. Along with The Refinery, the Stoke Memorial Hall will close to the public at the end of March due to earthquakerelated concerns. The Hounsell Circle Bus Shelter will also close and the removal of the former Mediterranean Foods building is to be brought forward. “All the buildings are known to be earthquake-prone. Although

none of the buildings pose any immediate danger to the community, council are not prepared to accept the level of risk they present should an earthquake occur,” read a statement from council last week. Any building under 34 per cent is considered earthquake prone, and reassessment of Stoke Memorial Hall undertaken at the end of last year found its original 2014 assessment of 24 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) should be revised to 17 per cent. The former Stoke Seniors building will also close while council assesses options to mitigate the risk posed by the hall. The Refinery was given a rating of less than 15 per cent in 2012.

That includes the five artists who have

their studios there. “They are totally gutted, there is not a lot of studio space in Nelson.” They are in the process of finding a new home, but Lloyd wanted to assure the public that the business for Arts Council, including assessing Creative Communities applications, will continue as usual. He says they are hoping to return to The Refinery after the strengthening work, which may take 18 months, but it may be a different looking building then. They are also looking to find alternate gallery spaces for those artists who had shows booked in with them.

Meanwhile, Laura says she is grateful that the Nelson City Council has come to the party with a grant to help transition the festival to NCMA. “It’s fantastic and a great show of support as the change in venue was going to be a big financial hit for us.” NCMA director James Donaldson, says he is excited to step in and help the fringe team. “It’s been remarkably easy, because they’re a flexible team and a great bunch of people to work with. “Our second performance venue has done a few classical gigs, but we know it’s got more in it. It’s exciting to see it really be

stretched it its limits. It’s all about the possibility, not the challenge.” Chair of council’s community services committee Matt Lawrey says staff are doing everything they can to minimise the disruption users will be facing. “Council recognises that when we close buildings it creates lots of headaches for some people, and we are really sorry for the inconvenience these changes are going to cause. “But the last thing we want to do is upset people and we know that staff would not be taking this step unless they believed it was in the best interests of the people of Nelson.”

Covid-19: Practical advice Chemists’ shelves stripped on keeping yourself healthy Jonty Dine Reporter

Chief medical officer for the Nelson Marlborough Health Nick Baker gives some practical advice on keeping yourself healthy. What are the best ways to prevent the spread of viruses like Covid-19? There are some simple steps that people can take: Avoid close contact with people who have a flu-like illness, cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands properly, don’t go to work if you are unwell, and don’t share food.

and avoid other people. Make sure you avoid public spaces, particularly hospitals and other health settings. We don’t want people who think they may be displaying symptoms of Covid-19 to arrive without warning at health settings. Call ahead and get some advice before you come face-to-face

What should people remember around hand washing? Now is the time to do the things we should normally do well. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with hot, soapy water, or antibacterial hand wash. Remember to wash your hands before you eat or handle food, after you’ve been to the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, or caring for someone who is sick.

Why is this important? We want to try and contain this, the sooner we can stop spreading it, the sooner we can catch our cases, the better chance we have at reducing spread. It’s a matter of protecting other people who are sick and are particularly vulnerable, as well as protecting staff who need to be look after patients. If you are at all in doubt, keep your distance.

What should someone do if they think they have symptoms? If you are feeling unwell, isolate yourself. Stay home from work. Particularly if you have travelled recently and are feeling unwell, contact healthline for advice,

How concerned should people be about the spread of Covid-19 in New Zealand? Looking at the situation in New Zealand at the moment, your chances of catching it here remain very low. We need

to be alert, and ready to stamp it out, but at the moment we are still focusing on keeping it out. People do not need to be building stockpiles of food, the case numbers in New Zealand are very low. It is less infections than measles, if someone in a household has measles, 90 per cent of the other people in the house who could catch it do. With Covid-19, it’s between 3-10 per cent. For a lot of people this would be a mild illness, but it would be more severe for people with underlying conditions and older people. For those people it’s important that they are doing everything they can to keep themselves healthy. Would getting the flu vaccine help? Symptoms between the Flu and Covid-19 are very similar, and we don’t want to get cases mixed up. Flu season causes busyness in our health system, so the earlier we can get people vaccinated the better. It will mean there is less confusion.

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The panic surrounding the coronavirus has spread to Nelson with locals clearing chemist shelves and businesses discouraging sick customers from entering. Nicky Prinsep from Prices Pharmacy says they have sold out of masks and hand sanitiser. “We are just trying to keep the supplies coming as fast as we can.” Prices is one of a number of Nelson businesses that are taking precautions against the virus by discouraging those showing symptoms from entering their premises. Vivo Hair and Enhanceskin in Buxton Square also have signage at their doors, asking if you are ill or have travelled recently to please reschedule your appointment. “We had information from the Ministry of Health and that was something they wanted us to have on out windows so that people who fear they may have the virus or want more information know where to go.” Nicky says it’s about helping allay people’s fears. “It’s also for people who don’t really understand whats happening, our pharmacy staff have been very busy reassuring people.” Nelson-Marlborough Health confirmed last week that two people

from the region are being monitored for any signs they have contracted coronavirus. A health board spokesperson said the two were passengers on the Emirates flight from Dubai to Auckland, via Bali, on which a traveller was confirmed on Friday as having the virus. However, on Monday they said there are no confirmed cases in the Nelson Marlborough region and the Ministry of Health emphasises that, with continued vigilance, the chance of widespread community outbreak is expected to remain low. People who have symptoms of fever, cough or shortness of breath should stay at home and seek medical advice from Healthline.

Helping locals with their hearing Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Educating Nelsonians about their hearing is something that Tracy Dawson from Hearing Nelson is passionate about - but it’s also something she can’t afford to do. That’s why the non-profit organisation is a nominee for this year’s Car Company’s Charity Drive. Launched last week, the initiative sees $10,000 up for grabs for community organisations. Tracy says they currently run much-needed education

workshops for primary and intermediate schools, as well as carpentry and engineering classes at NMIT. “But we have no money to continue to do it - we have to get sponsorship from businesses to deliver the workshops.” Tracy says one in five young people are showing signs of hearing loss and their school workshops teach children about hearing and sound through interactive experiments. “If we can’t continue with our education, there is no one else to do it. We seem to fall between the gaps of education and health.”

The organisation were the recipients of the community impact award at last year’s Chamber of Commerce Business awards and Tracy says if they were to receive some money, it would “transform their year”. “We would be able to get out to more people. We have interest from kindergartens, but we have to turn them away. There is so much we could be doing.” Application forms for the charity drive are available at www. carcompanynelson.co.nz or at Car Company branches in Nelson, Richmond and Tahunanui and close on April 6.

Coming together for Christchurch tragedy Staff Reporter

Almost one year on from the country’s worst terror attack, Nelson came together in a show of solidarity with the Muslim community last night. March 15, 2019, marks one of the darkest days in New Zealand’s history when a man allegedly walked into two Christchurch mosques and killed 51 people.

A tour running under the banner of the 'Togetherness Tour Kotahitanga' began in Auckland on February 29 and came to Nelson yesterday on its way to Christchurch for the one year anniversary of the attack. A large crowd gathered at Trafalgar Centre last night where a number of speakers including mayor Rachel Reese and Islamic leader Fahad Tasleem, paid tribute to the victims and shared a message of hope.

A sleek Italian-made Riva powerboat, once owned by former First Lady Jackie Kennedy-Onassis took the top prize among record entries at the 21st NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show, held at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park over the weekend. There was a record 155 entries, up on last year’s 130, with a wide range of clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats and sailing dinghies attracting two thousand boating fans over the weekend. The winning boat Jaqueline is owned by Wellington businessman Bruce Judge, who said he had always aspired to own one of the powerboats designed by Carlo Riva, a legend in the world of wooden boats. Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke and NBS chief executive Tony Cadigan celebrate the new partnership. Photo: Jonty Dine.

NBS sponsors Nelson Hospice Staff Reporter The Nelson Tasman Hopsice has signed its first major corporate sponsor for 2020. NBS, which also donated funds for the build of the new hospice in 2019, has signed a two-year partnership with the organisation to help boost its funding. NBS chief executive Tony Cadigan says the NBS team prides itself on giving back to the local community, and supporting the not-for-profit sector is what helps to set them apart from other financial institutions. “The Hospice is such a deserving organisation, it

provides a much-needed and valuable caring service for individuals and their families at what is often one of the most difficult times of their lives. We have a huge amount of respect for their work, and the support they provide in the community.” Tony says, as well as providing a significant yearly donation for the period of the agreement, NBS will also support the Hospice with promotions and provide a presence throughout their local branches. “As we’ve already seen with the level of community support for the build of the Hospice, people in Nelson Tasman region are big-hearted when it comes to a

good cause.” Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says he was delighted that NBS had made an ongoing financial commitment for the next few years. “We’re a homegrown organisation, by and for the people of the Nelson Tasman region so it’s wonderful to have the support of NBS, another organisation established to serve the people of this region.” He says the Hospice has a shortfall in funding of more than $1 million each year. “So we’re hugely appreciative of donations and sponsorships that reduce the amount that we need to fundraise.”

TRYathlon fever at Tahuna Beach Harri Jordan More than 1000 budding athletes descended onto Tahunanui Beach on Sunday to take part in the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon. Among them were participants Anatori Anderson and Cass Maitland who successfully completed all three sections of the event. The smiling girls had just received their medals and were able to cool off under the water-misting arch. “It was really fun and really exhausting.” It was a brilliant day out for all the

family, with sunshine, music and a variety of food stands. The event saw a huge turnout of volunteers. One volunteer, Sam Langford, said she loved seeing the kids get so excited about doing the TRYathlon. “It’s great to help the community and to get involved.” There was huge support from families on the side lines excitedly spurring on their young Kiwis with banners and huge cheers. Travelling from Picton, Lora Crapper said the event “was amazing and the support crew had been fantastic”.

Your Voice Reply to “Mayor’s priorities” Dear Sir, Mr Cable really should be a bit more optimistic before he leaps into print about mayor Reese’s alleged shortcomings. Rather than carping at “the extensive absences mayor Reese will be taking via her Clinton Foundation grant,” Jim should be speculating about how well the council will work without her. In another vein, possibly more varicose, Nelson City Council is promoting upper Trafalgar Street, the bit between the Museum and 1903 Square as “a fun place to hang out”. All very nice, I suppose, for the bars and businesses that operate there, who will be rubbing their collective hands and smirking about all that council paid-for promotion and advertising. No doubt the owners of property in the area will also be smiling. But what about the rest of the CBD? Let’s hope there’s a reduction in the

Also, perhaps tongue in cheek, let’s hope council has done its due diligence under the Local Authorities (Members’ Interests) Act 1968 and no councillor or their partner has any pecuniary interest in the properties or businesses in upper Trafalgar Street. Nelson Matters We lost two special New Zealanders last week with the passing of former Tasman and Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall and former Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimmons. Kerry made a stunning contribution to our region. He taught my wife Linley and was extraordinarily talented teacher in making learning fun. He carried the same infectious positivity into public life as the last Mayor of Richmond Borough then on to become the first Mayor of Tasman for three terms and then Mayor of Nelson for a term. Kerry’s greatest contribution to our region was successfully forging the diverse Richmond, Motueka, Waimea and Golden

Bay boroughs and counties into the Tasman District Council in 1988. Many merged councils of that era remained divided for years. Kerry’s uniting personality proved to be the right person at the right time and in the right place. Projects I worked with Kerry on included the initiatives of Saxton Field sporting complex with Nelson Mayor Peter Malone, the Richmond Aquatic Centre, the Kahurangi National Park, Whakatu Drive and the upgrading of Nelson’s Trafalgar Park facilities. I have always been in awe of Kerry’s natural skill as a speaker and performer. His dapper fashion matched his colourful person-

ality and he could always make young and old laugh. Some politicians have great minds and others great personalities. Kerry was exceptional in having both. He was very broad in his knowledge and enthusiasm that covered the arts, sport, education and business. Kerry and I have both served Tasman and Nelson, he as Mayor and I as MP. We shared a passion for town and country, working together and favoured a single Nelson District Council. Kerry also contributed nationally through his Presidency of Local Government NZ and chairing the NZ Conservation Authority. I must also pay tribute to Kerry’s wife Colleen who has and con-

We must thank Kerry’s family and the staff of Ernest Rutherford for the care they took of this wonderful man over his last years. I shared 14 years in Parliament with former Alliance and then Green MP Jeanette Fitzsimmons. She led the brave move in 1988 for the Green party to split from Jim Anderton’s Alliance Party and she did so with total class and without bitterness. Many commentators wrote the Greens off but with then co-leader Rod Donald the party went on to prosper while the Alliance collapsed. I spent years on select commit-

Jeanette Fitzsimmons and Kerry Marshall leave a legacy and style of public leadership that sets a high bar. The perfect murder at the Theatre Royal Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A classic case of ‘whodunnit’ is coming to the Theatre Royal next week. Nelson Repertory Theatre will be performing Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Nile’ at the Theatre Royal for four shows only. Production manager Jenny Holden says it will be an “edgeof-your-seat show” full of passion, rivalry and revenge. “It’s sure to keep audiences guessing until the very end.” The story follows a honeymoon cruise down the Nile which turns into a murder mystery, full of twists. For extra suspense, Jenny encourages audiences to refrain from reading the book ‘Death on the Nile’ - which the play is based on - until they have seen the show, and to refrain from telling others. “There’re enough spoilers out there with things already

Photo: Francesca Beckett. - and we would love the audience to play along and not reveal the ‘whodunnit’ to family or friends until the show’s run is finished.” Director Alli Campbell says Agatha Christie is the “mistress of whodunnit”. “I found the play, written in 1944, to be quite different

from the original 1937 book and the 1978 movie, but it remains absolutely Agatha. “I know that audiences will enjoy the fun of sleuthing and we love it when people dress for the occasion, 1930s style.” As Nelson Repertory Theatre is a non-profit community theatre, all ticket sales

are used to stage future productions, and all proceeds from programme sales are donated to a local charity. ‘Murder on the Nile’ is showing at the Theatre Royal from 18 - 21 March. Tickets are available from the theatre box office or from www. ticketrocket.co.nz

Great Moscow Circus comes to town Matt McCrorie

Acrobatics, clowns, freestyle motorbikes, and the flying trapeze are just a few of the acts that locals will have the chance to see at The Great Moscow Circus, which arrived in Richmond last week. The show, which is currently on an 11-month tour of New Zealand, has been all over the world, with recent tours in South Africa and South Korea. While life on the road may seem gruelling to some, for a lot of the performers it’s the only way of life they’ve known.

Kiarnna Webber, who performs in aerial acts in the Great Moscow Circus, has been a performer all her life. For her, circus is in her blood. “I’m a seventh-generation circus performer. I grew up travelling around Australia with my family in the circus. “When you’re growing up in circus, you just want to do it. Kids want to copy their parents.” It’s a busy life for performers though, usually spending between 2-3 weeks in a city before moving on. “It’s hard work, but we were born into it. It’s what we do.”

While life on the road can be gruelling, being able to entertain people all around the globe is worth it. “People walk away with a buzz,” clown Ozzy Brophy says. “Our aim is really to get people off their phones for a few hours, and just entertain them. When people are enjoying it, that makes it for us. “We want people to leave their problems at the door and just have a good time.” The Great Moscow Circus is currently showing at the Richmond Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street, until March 22.

“Let’s do something remarkable together,” is the inspirational message behind the biennual ‘Relay for Life Nelson’ event taking place on March 21st and 22nd (4pm-8am) at the Nelson A&P Showgrounds, Lower Queen Street, Richmond. “It’s all about celebrating, remembering and fighting back,” says Cancer Society Nelson Centre Manager, Michelle Hunt. To celebrate local survivors and their caregivers, there will be an afternoon tea followed by an opening lap in which everyone can participate. Then in the evening a candlelight ceremony will be held in rememberance of those who have lost loved ones. Michelle says ‘fighting back’ is about fighting through the night when it’s cold, dark and scary. “It’s very symbolic.” Fundraising Support Co-ordinator and cancer survivor, Lizl Matthewson, says the event is quite emotional for everyone. “It’s really empowering for the commu-

Klatt of Washington organised a 24-hour walk/run in recognition of those affected by cancer. He asked friends and family to get involved and make a donation to the American Cancer Society. A year later, 19 teams took part and since then Relay for Life has become a global movement. New Zealand’s first relay started in 2001 in Manawatu. This year, Nelson’s Relay for Life is one of 15 events taking place in New Zealand during March.

The Candelight Ceremony takes place after dark. “People can get candle bags and be part of the remembrance ceremony,” says Lizl. “We have decorating tents where you can decorate your own bag.” Michelle says the A&P Showgrounds are ideal because it’s a camping event. “Around 600 people will be staying overnight. It’s an amazing venue with plenty of space.” The teams take turns walking/running around a track while enjoying a festival-like atmosphere of live music, entertainment and activities. One long blast echoed through Nelson Harbour early on Sunday afternoon as Port Nelson workers waved goodbye to the ‘Huria Matenga.’ “It’s sad to see her go, we grew old together, me and the tug,” says skipper Kevin Skelton whose first command was the tug. The Huria Matenga was originally delivered to Nelson from Japan back in 1983 on a passage taking 24 days. “It was my first command, so we’ve grown up with her,” says Kevin. “It’s been a big part of our lives. I’ve been skipper of it for 37 years and there’s always something about your first command.” The tug was originally named

just ‘Matenga’ which was translated to “death” in Maori, so it was consequently changed to Huria Matenga; the Maori heroine who helped save 10 crewmen from the stricken brig at Delaware off the Nelson Coast in 1863. John Tregidga was the first to drive her into Port Nelson in 1983 and on Sunday he was the last to take her out. “It’s nice to know she’s going to a good home,” says John. The boat began her voyage to the Pacific Island of Vanuatu, where she will help locals guide in larger vessels to Port Vila. Ocean Logistics Ltd, a tug and barge company from Vanuatu have purchased the tug. The passage is expected to take up to a week and the boat will use 36,000 litres of fuel.

It’s not goodbye forever for Kevin as he has volunteered to fly to Vanuatu to help teach the locals how to drive the tug. “The tugs are so different to drive; they have fixed 360-degree propellers and it gets quite tricky,” he says. “I’ll be back with it again.” Kevin formed a real rapport with the Vanuatuans while they have been working on the tug, getting it ready for its ocean passage. Some have even invited him to meet their families when they arrive. For now, though, Port Nelson has “lost a bit of its history” says marine supervisor Shane Norton. “The sound of the engine at full throttle occasionally rattled the windows of local houses.” Which, curiously, it seems people are really going to miss.

Knapps Lawyers’

BOULDER BANK WALK

March is such a beautiful time of year — the perfect opportunity to be part of the annual Knapps Lawyers’ Boulder Bank Challenge, which raises funds for Coastguard. Managed as a scenic reserve by the Department of Conservation, the Boulder Bank is composed of granodiorite pebbles, cobbles and boulders derived from nearby Mackay Bluff. Early Māori used the Boulder Bank for gathering birds and seafood. European fishermen later mended their nets on the Boulder Bank and built simple baches, six of which remain.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Nelson West since 2010, this year’s Boulder Bank Walk takes place this Sunday March 15th. Buses depart from outside Styx on Wakefield Quay and go to Boulder Bank Drive, and people then walk along the Boulder Bank to The Cut (around 9 kms), which takes around 3 hours. Boats will then bring participants back to Wakefield Quay. Along the walk, participants can visit the historic baches and lighthouse. Sang Hlichal survived almost an hour on the mat and eight different opponents of all sizes and skill to be crowned the New Zealand Chin Wrestling champion in Wellington last month. The 18-year-old endured the gruelling ordeal at the 2020 Chin National Day and Triennial Conference in what was his competitive debut. Wrestling is a religion in Myanmar’s Chin culture and it was showcased with three competitions, including the notorious last man standing or Minung tambik teitu in which a fighter must go through multiple opponents. “They just keep coming until there’s no one else.” Sang entered the three hour contest at about the midway point with about 20 wrestlers already eliminated. Standing 180cm and weighing 85kg, the bodybuilder is an impressive physical specimen and used his power to

The Nelson College student says he carried the customs of his Chin ancestors onto the mat. “It’s the best aspect of our traditions and the one we are

most proud of. One person would beat the whole village until there was no-one else left.” Sang uses the style of ‘Kehlei vangkar’ in which he generates his power from his left leg. Sang’s victory was made more impressive by the fact he was unable to train for two weeks due to a back injury. However, his debut competition wasn’t over yet as he was talked into competing in the heavyweight division later in the day. After some spray, vitamins and a massage, Sang went on to almost claim a second belt, beaten only in the final match of the day. Moving to New Zealand in 2009, Sang was also a talented footballer but dropped it to focus on wrestling and bodybuilding. “I am addicted to the gym, I go every day.” Sang is self taught and has spent hours watching Chin wrestling bouts on YouTube. He will return to the capital in early 2021 to defend his title.

Suburbs open season with loss Locally Owned and Operated

WEDNESDAY 11 March 2020

Jonty Dine Nelson Suburbs has kicked off its 2020 MPL campaign in disappointing fashion, going down 2-1 to Ferrymead Bays at Saxton on Saturday. A scoreless second half frustrated fans as Suburbs came agonisingly close to an equaliser on several occasions. Skipper Sam Ayers scored the only goal for the home side in a heated affair. “It was a tough one, we felt the penalty was a bit unfair and put us on the back foot from there, but it is what it is.” Sam says there were some positive signs to take from the loss. “We controlled large portions of the game and did some good stuff, but just couldn’t get that final execution” He says he’s confident the boys in blue will bounce back next week. “We will reassess things, we still had a few players away and injuries, so we keep going.” The visitors got off to the perfect start when Chester Gaskin was carded inside the box and skipper James Deehan made no mistake to open the scoring after ten minutes. Suburbs responded in spectacular style when Ayers hit a precision header off the back of a superb cross from Jordan Yong. Michael White was denied soon after thanks to a brilliant save by Suburbs’ keeper Corey Wilson. However, White would make it 2-1 in the 39th as Wilson came out of goal and the Ferrymead striker chipped it home. Ferrymead dominated territory and possession early in the second and kept Corey busy. Suburbs went on all-out attack in search of a draw with Ben Wright and Ryan Stewart making strong contributions off the bench. However, despite its best efforts, Suburbs couldn’t find the back of the net and conceded the loss as a fiery exchange between players broke out after the final whistle. Next week the side travels to Christchurch to take on Western FC.

MARIST 2019 - Tasman Trophy: Champions. Sub-union: Runners-up. Coach - Gavin Briggs Captain - Jacob Norris Marist had a stellar season in 2019, breaking its decade-long Tasman Trophy hoodoo in a thrilling final against Waimea, winning 32-29 in extra time, before being pipped at the death in the sub-union final by their rivals. The side is riddled with experience with a healthy dose of young talent including Nelson College first five Niko Barton and Tom Thornalley. Returning to the ranks will be the likes of Mako wider squad members Taina-Fox Matamua, Sam Briggs and, of course, inspirational skipper Jacob Norris. Ones to watch - Te Puoho Stephens missed a large chunk of 2019 after suffering a nasty knee injury against Waimea. The blockbusting number 8 is back and looking stronger than ever as he looks to build on the form that saw him included in the All Black Sevens squad last

year. Having captained a Mako touring side to the United States, winger Jamie Spowart will bring a new level of experience to his game. Jamie’s fleet feet are again set to cause nightmares for defences. Halfback Cleve Barrell is also making a comeback from injury after topping the try scoring charts in 2019 with 12.

WAIMEA OLD BOYS 2019 - Tasman Trophy: Runners-up. Sub-union: Champions Coach - Dion Mytton Captain - Ben Eder Waimea formed one half of an epic rivalry with Marist in 2019 with the sides requiring extra time in both the sub-union and Tasman Trophy finals to find a victor. Though Waimea went down in the Tasman Trophy, the side avenged the extra time loss in another 100-minute thriller to claim the Nelson championship 25-23. Waimea have lost Alex Coventry from the midfield while winger Mitch Amberger will be sitting out the season due to concussion. The side has gained the

services of Mitch Barry from Nelson RFC as well as the dynamic Daniel Rogers out of Nelson College. Ones to watch: Sharp shooter Campbell Parata brought a strong reputation from across the ditch and the young first five did not disappoint in 2019, leading the competition points tally with 136, nailing 19 penalty goals. Vice-captain Michael Stringer will surely be pushing for Mako selection should he duplicate his form of 2019, while blockbusting numbereight Taya Brown will be looking to make his mark on senior rugby following a successful college career.

STOKE 2019 - Tasman Trophy: Ninth Sub-union: Fourth Coach - Brad Allam Captain - Blair Prinsep After a disappointing 2019 campaign, Stoke has recruited heavily in the off-season and boasts one of the strongest squads in the competition. The bulk of the 2019 side will be joined by some serious young

talent with New Zealand U20s prop Matt Graham Williams, promising utility back Riley Cormack and lock Antonio Shalfoon all moving north from the Canterbury rugby factory. Also joining the side will be stars of the Nelson College 1st XV Fergus Hughes and Levi Carew. First five Taine Robinson has joined the Eagles from Marist while Max Nalder and Jack Grooby will have an intriguing battle for the starting nine jersey. Ones to watch - Isei Lewaqai and Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta wreaked havoc on defences last season and will no doubt cause plenty more nightmares in 2020. The pair will form part of a powerful pack led by skipper Blair Prinsep up front. The Eagles have plenty of flair out-wide as well with the likes of Charlie Chambers and the electric Joey Scott.

NELSON RFC 2019 - Tasman Trophy: Sixth Sub-union: Fifth Coach - Kade Heke Captain - Isaac Salmon The country’s oldest club will be looking to bounce back from a miserable 2019 season, winning just half its Tasman Trophy games and failing to make the play-offs. In its 150th year, Nelson will have plenty to play for. Nelson will again be without a num-

ber of its stars for the majority of the season as David Havili, Ethan Blackadder and Quinten Strange have cemented themselves in the Crusaders squad. Winger Tima Faingaanuku is also likely to be absent with the Highlanders. That leaves the likes of number-eight Isaiah Miller and Kershawl Sykes-Martin needing to take on leadership roles. The solid midfield combination of Nick Foxley and Chris Kerslake will again provide the backbone of the backline with Saul Lewis adding some dazzle out wide. The third brother in the Faingaanuku family, Ben, will also make his club rugby debut. Prop Isaac Salmon will captain the side for 2020. Ones to watch - All eyes will, of course, be on young superstar Anton Segner. The German-born loosie was a standout in his college years, twice being named in the New Zealand Schools team and leading Nelson to its first UC Championship in 13 years. Nelson’s fortunes will also rely heavily on the form of young first five Riaihe Rangihaeata from Auckland who replaces incumbent Willy Havili.

WEDNESDAY 11 March 2020

de Kock The boys from Brightwater were the surprise package of 2019 and having retained the core of its squad will again be confident of knocking over some of the power clubs. Wanderers have signed on powerful prop Sione Mau from Wellington as well as utility back Tayne Lockwood from Motueka and half back Stace Forbes from Collingwood. However, the club is struggling for front rowers compounded by a pre-season knee injury to Jake Goeddert. Ones to watch - Schoolboy star Apetone Vaka will play his second season for Wanderers and will form a bruising combination with another new recruit in El-nino Peniamina of Wellington. Danny MacLauchlan will lead the front row while veteran Fletcher Matthews will run the ship from ten. Flanker Chris Hala'ufia was a member of the St Peter’s College First XV that won the National Top four in 2018 and even scored the winning try in the final against Napier Boys’ High School, a strike later voted the Sky Sport Try of the Year.

They varied in body shape, age and skill, but the softballers at the 57th annual National Evergreens tournament showed they’re still as competitive as ever. Saxton Field hosted more than 400 over-35 players representing 16 provinces at the weekend, the biggest annual tournament in New Zealand. The Evergreens Tournament has been running since 1971 with Nelson hosting in 1974, 1983, 1995 and 2008. Nelson president Alex Oliver says feedback for the two-day tournament has been fantastic. fought final with Waiarapa. Alex says the weather was typically pristine and the diamond played beautifully. “It just bounced so true, there was no deviation.” Players ranged in age from early 40s to late 60s, with even a few 70-yearolds involved. “It was great to see everyone just bloody enjoying themselves, it was played in a great spirit.” Nelson, who Alex says are in a rebuilding period, finished a respectable fifth, taking defending champions Southland to the final innings before being pipped by a solitary run which would’ve seen them play off for third. It was only the experience of former New Zeland pitcher Greg Newton that spoiled the party for the hosts.

Harry has the Ultimate challenge Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Representing your country against the best athletes in the world is a daunting enough prospect. However, at just 15-years-old the challenge becomes even more intimidating. This is the reality for Nelsonian Harry Edwards, who will be the youngest member of the New Zealand U20 Ultimate squad heading to Sweden in July for the World Ultimate Junior Championships. Despite his youth, Harry is not fazed by what awaits him. The Nelson College student took up the game, played using a frisbee disk, just over a year ago. “I saw people playing at the park one day and at the time I wasn’t playing any sports, so I thought ‘that looks fun, I could take that up.’” He has enjoyed a rapid ascension ever since. Harry came on to the national selector’s radar during a youth tournament in New Plymouth. From there he was invited to join the U20 side known as the ‘Katipo.’ “I never thought I’d make it, I was very surprised.” Harry has already had a taste of international action, when he went to Manila for a tournament in December. But come July, the competition increases even more with the world champion American side joining the fray. “There is a lot of hard work and training to do,” says Harry. “It’s quite daunting being the youngest player but I get along well with the other guys and learn heaps.” Harry says he loves the speed and camaraderie of the game. “It’s very fast paced, there is a lot of teamwork involved and the atmosphere is great.” As a minority sport, the Sweden trip won’t come cheap for Harry. Players have to raise about $7000 each. “I am still looking for a job and I am doing several fundraisers like making and selling baking at school and quiz nights with my club.” Harry says his dream would be to earn a scholarship to the United States where he could study and play ultimate. To help Harry in his quest to get to Sweden go to https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/throw-me-somesupport-and-help-me-catch-my-dreams

The crowd heard from comedian Raybon Kan, former Nelson College rugby star Anton Segner, Olympicbound weightlifter Megan Gifford, former boxing champion Shane Cameron and social media superstar William Waiirua. the night was a stunning success, raising almost $50,000 for the programme. “For us it was such a massively successful evening on so many levels. The money raised will help us continue our growing programmes but also to share the diversity of the gym with supporters and with new people. It was a wonderful, wonderful evening.” The fundraiser was a change of pace for the charity, which has run three charity boxing events as its previous fundraisers, the last in 2016. means it is likely another will be held next year. As for another charity boxing event, he says they “may have one more in us”. Founding chairman Scott Gibbons was also honoured with a life membership and Paul says the support for the gym from so many different people means a lot. “We are overwhelmed with the support and really, sincerely appreciate

everyone who supports us, we never take it for granted. People understand the impact we are making, and they are thankful, that means a lot to us.” Victory Boxing is based on Vanguard St and runs fitness-based wellbeing boxing classes for children, teenagers and adults.
