Marine company pleads for help Charles Anderson A Nelson marine engineering business says it will be forced to shed 40 percent of its workforce if the Government does not allow vessels to travel to New Zealand for urgent repairs. Aimex has already laid off 10

percent of its 100-strong workforce and is looking at further job cuts while its application to various ministries for help goes unanswered. It comes as other local companies in the sector write to the Government pleading with them to help. Aimex says that it may have cut up

to 40 percent of its staff. General manager Simon Lavery says they have requested that the vessel, Captain Vincent Gann and its workers, be allowed to come from American Samoa, be quarantined and, if necessary, tested for Covid-19 so they can undertake repair work.

“This is regular business for us. It’s what we depend on. It’s a real problem.” To allow that to happen the Ministry of Primary Industries would have to designate the workers on the ship as ‘essential’. Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford would then approve

or deny the request. However, Simon says that it is not just the Captain Vincent Gann, that would be coming from American Samoa, but others like it. American Samoa does not have any Covid-19 cases and since

“It makes me feel pretty proud, especially when you compare us to other countries. I think it was a very good idea to go into lockdown.”

“We have been very lucky and dealt with it really well, now we just have to keep it to zero and make sure we don’t have a second wave.”

“It’s great, but we need to stay vigilant. I am in favour of Level 1, but with restrictions still in place.”

FROM PAGE 1 Monday New Zealand has also been Covid-19 free. It was not clear whether moving to Level 1 would have an impact on the Government's decision. Simon says the ship represents hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue and the two others would bring further millions to the region. It also has a flow on effect for other companies in Nelson. Sealord, Talley’s, Aroma Aquaculture, Wakatu and others have all written letters asking for the Government to step in. “We have been asking for a week and we are still not getting any headway,” says Simon.

Aimex general manager Simon Lavery says it feels like the Government is playing ‘pass the parcel’. Photo: Supplied. He says the company will not have a choice but to lay off staff if a decision cannot be made. “We need to survive if we can. We don’t want [to make redundancies]. Right now, this economy needs this type for work. We are a bit frustrated as to why the Government would not want to allow it.”

Simon says that it comes on top of other regional blows like Air New Zealand pulling its maintenance hub out of Nelson. “We would hang on to these men until the vessel gets here, but if there is no light how long can you hang on for?” Economic Development

Minister Phil Twyford says that all applications for border exemptions for Other Essential Workers to enter New Zealand are considered on a case-bycase basis and must meet a high threshold. He says there is a company going through the process of applying for a border exemption with the Ministry of Primary Industries. “If and when that application is progressed, I will receive a briefing to consider border exemptions for the crew aboard this vessel.” However, Simon says it feels like “pass the parcel”. “No one seems like they want to own this problem and solve this problem.”

outrage around the world. In Nelson, protesters sat in solidarity with placards reading ‘Black Lives Matter” before marching through the city and chanting “no justice, no peace”. American Dvahje Durham declares herself black and proud and says she is sick of seeing minorities beaten and killed by police. “We are only seeing the stuff that’s on film, imagine how many times it is happening.” An emotional Dvahje then expressed her sincere gratitude for those who stood with her. “I am just so happy there are so many people here, change is only going to happen if we choose to make a difference.”

A new home for Habitat Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Habitat for Humanity has purchased the old Suburban Club with the intention of establishing a community hub and a new operational base. The Tahunanui Dr premises, currently being used as a Covid-19 testing facility, will provide a new home for the Nelson ReStore, which has outgrown its current space on Quarantine Rd. General manager Nick Clarke says initially, the building was up for lease from former owners Gibbons Holdings, who bought it in 2016. “I had a couple of people say to me ‘you should look at it’ and then the opportunity came up to buy it. The location is amazing. We’ll go from 13 carparks to 133 - there is so much flexibility.” Habitat for Humanity has been operating in the region for over 20 years, addressing the local need for decent, affordable housing. The community hub, which will also have a café, is set to open in early Spring and will have a focus on promoting community wellbeing and provide a base for affordable housing initiatives. “The need in our community for decent, affordable housing is acute,” says Nick.

Habitat for Humanity general manager Nick Clarke outside the old Suburban Club, which will become its new home come spring. Photo: Kate Russell. “Everyone deserves a decent place to live. When people have a secure place to call home, communities thrive.” Christian Savings, a faithbased investment agency, has provided significant financial support towards the purchase of the building and Nick says he’d also like to thank the community for their support. “The purchase of this building is a big step for us and has been made possible due to the tremendous support Habitat has received. Having been entrusted with this facility, our hope is that the hub will serve the community and be known for being kind and doing good.”

Mayor Rachel Reese says Habitat’s expansion into the new hub is a fantastic opportunity for the community to show its “caring side”. “We look forward to working with Habitat for Humanity from their new headquarters, which I’m sure will provide the city with a hub for caring - a meeting place for anyone who wants to do good things for the people of Nelson.” Expressions of interest from likeminded local community groups and social enterprises interested in becoming hub tenants are welcome. Contact Nick at nelson@habitat.org.nz for more information.

When Richard Dykes was shoulder-tapped to apply for the role of Nelson College’s new headmaster, he wasn’t actively looking for a new job. But Richard knew that he didn’t want to stay in Auckland forever. For the past five years he had been the principal of Glendowie College, as well as being the president of the Auckland Principals Association. “But we also had the insider’s knowledge that Nelson is a slice of paradise,” he says. He also lived in the region while he taught at Waimea College from 1998 to 2005. So, when the opportunity came up he jumped at it. “I love a challenge.” Richard is only a week into the role but says he likes what he sees. “There is already a lot of good stuff going on, and I want to harness that and run with it.” He says that he wants to “build and legacy and a future”. “Your sense of identity comes

Richard says that he is excited about working in an allboys’ school and says there is definitely a place for single sex schools in today’s New Zealand. “I’m confident I will put mark on the school, but you have to get the lie of the land. Each

school has a unique landscape and you have to adapt to that. I don’t have any fixed ideas.” Richard takes over from Gary O’Shea who stepped down from the role at the end of last year after 13 years. Richard says he has a strong focus on academic results and scholarships. “That is the fundamental job of a school.” Nelson College board of trustees chair Dennis Christian says the board knows Richard will bring a fresh perspective to the college balanced with an understanding and appreciation for its culture and heritage.

Nelson pharmacy and director fined almost $400k for price fixing Wellington High Court has ordered a Nelson pharmacy and one of its directors to pay $394,000 in fines for price-fixing. Prices Pharmacy and company director Stuart Hebberd admitted the action after the Commerce Commission filed proceedings in April 2018. It alleged that the pharmacy and Hebberd facilitated the arrangement with competing Nelson pharmacies in May 2016. The arrangement had come up after a meeting with 10 Nelson pharmacy owners in April 2016, and stopped in June that year when the owners received additional taxpayer funding from Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. In most cases, the arrangement resulted in consumers paying $1 more for $5 prescriptions. Justice Dobson said it "substantially

lessened" competition in the Nelson pharmacy market, to the detriment of the customers. Commerce Commission chair Anna Rawlings said the commission accepted that the defendants did not intend to breach the Commerce Act and were motivated by what they considered to be under-funding of prescription medicines. Despite that, Rawlings said the case was a timely reminder of obligations under the Act, and risks of discussing prices with competitors. "Competition between pharmacies is important because studies suggest that even modest changes in patient charges can result in some patients not collecting all or some of their medicines, which can in turn put pressure on other aspects of the health system such as hospitals." – RNZ

Nelson man admits abusing former National leader A Nelson man who sent abusive and derogatory messages to the leader of the National Party has pled guilty to a charge of threatening to kill. The 26-year-old, who cannot be named, appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday. Police say the man sent a series of abusive Facebook messages over a two-hour-period on May 15 to Simon Bridges, who was the leader of the National Party at the time. The messages were abusive in nature and threatened Bridges, giving the man’s opinion of how useless he was. Police say the man declined to comment formally but admitted sending the messages. He stated that “we are all just puppets working for this useless wanker” and the he “does nothing to help the country out at all”.

He also suggested that, as he was a taxpayer paying police wages, Bridges and the police should be helping out with real crime and leave him alone. The man pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening to kill but his lawyer indicated he would be applying for a discharge without conviction. He also entered a guilty plea to driving with breath alcohol over 400mcg from an incident in December where he was found to be driving with a breath alcohol reading of 505mcg per litre of breath. The legal limit is 250. Judge David Ruth convicted the man of the driving charge and ordered a pre-sentence report. He will appear again before the courts on August 3.

‘Speed’ celebrates a century in style Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Charlie Stanton has packed a lot of living into his 100 years. “I survived the war and 23 years of motor racing, then 38 years of gliding, and I survived that too.” The Nelson resident served in Africa and Italy during WWII, liberating Rome from German occupation in 1944. Serving as a truck driver during the war, he earnt himself a reputation for his skill and was given the nickname ‘Speed’. After returning to New Zealand, Charlie and his brother built the famous ‘Stanton Corvette’ with a Gipsey Major purchased from the war assets board for ten pounds. The car would hold the New Zealand land speed record of 175mph (282kph) for 12 years. This success led to him being

contracted by Bruce McLaren to work in England, with one of his engines winning the Formula One World Champs. He then took his passion for engineering to the skies and built his own glider, which he flew until retirement at 85, as the secondoldest pilot in the country. Charlie’s incredible life was celebrated at Summerset Village last week at his 100th birthday party. Surrounded by family and friends, Charlie was even reunited with his beloved Corvette after 15 years and treated to a rapid ride around the block. “That was terrific, just like I remember. Took me back a few years.” When asked what the secret to longevity is, Charlie says it's simply to 'live'. “I wouldn’t have a clue, I’ve just always believed that whatever happens, happens.”

Travel agents prove worthwhile

Matt McCrorie

The travel industry was one of the first to be hit by Covid-19, but local travel agents say that the pandemic has proven their worth. Independent travel agent Kelly Bowater says that brokers worked hard during the lockdown to get refunds for clients who were left in the lurch after international travel came to a standstill. “Suddenly it was gone. We had the

rug ripped out from under our clients, and that’s been ripped out from under us.” Travel brokers like Kelly worked full time during the lockdown for next to nothing, cancelling, refunding, and working with carriers to try and get money back for clients. “Our business was completely taken away from us.” But Kelly says that the experience proves just how worthwhile travel agents and brokers are.

“To our clients, we have proven that we are worth it.” Kelly says there was a lot of stress involved for those who booked individually and were faced with the task of trying to get refunds. “I’m not putting down booking yourself on the internet, but as brokers we are professionals and we are here to support people in those tricky situations.” Owner and operator of House of Travel Richmond, Amanda Radovanovich, says that travel agents played a big role in getting Kiwis who were stranded overseas back home when Covid-19 swept the globe. “We were really busy helping

downturn in business, Kelly says that the travel broker industry has proven how valuable it is, and will come out stronger. “We are here to ride the storm and come out better at the other end.”

The Nelson Weekly is officially the second-best community newspaper in the country. The announcement was made last Friday as part of the Community Newspaper Association awards, which highlights the best in show across the entire country. The Nelson Weekly came away with the runner up award for the overall best newspaper, narrowly missing out to the Whakatane Beacon, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. Editor Charles Anderson says the achievement is incredible considering that the Weekly has

a considerably smaller staff that consistently punches above its weight. “I’m really proud of the way we have developed the newspaper and the Nelson App into something that locals also feel some pride in.” Charles says the region had a big and traumatic year in 2019, with everything from the Tasman wildfires to the success of the Mako in the Mitre 10 Cup. “Our staff were there to cover it all and so it’s great that this dedication has been recognised.” The Weekly, which turns 10-yearsold this year, also had some other

success. Reporter Kate Russell also came runner-up in the Senior News Reporter category, which was won last year by Charles. Sports reporter Jonty Dine also came third in sports category. The company’s magazine the Nelson Magazine also came runner-up in the best magazine category, after only having been in existence for two years. Meanwhile, Charles was also recently recognised at the prestigious Voyager Media Awards having won the Peter M Acland Fellowship which allows him to work at a news organisation in the United States.

How Nelson’s Heritage Festival went virtual to beat lockdown

As Jacinda Ardern took New Zealand into lockdown, plans for Nelson’s Heritage Festival were underway. 76 events were planned, with talks on everything from Nelson’s pottery industry, to a walking tour of the City’s pubs. But life was about to change dramatically, and all events were cancelled. Heritage Festival organisers decided to take the festival online – and the Nelson Virtual Heritage Festival was born.

Tanya Nock - Nelson Voice Collective: “We kept spirits high throughout lockdown with events touching the lives of thousands. We invited 16 families to sing Nga Iwi E in one of four harmonies, and send in videos. The resulting video has attracted thousands of views.

Watch: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=k90HGchQ7WE “Next, we organised a virtual pub crawl of Nelson’s historic pubs, playing Brown Eyed Girl and Dancing Queen to viewers. Fortunately, all virtual drinkers got home safely.” Watch: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=PjJE63C_qR0 Daniel Allan – Horatio Nelson: “I got the idea to make a character of Horatio Nelson when I found David Howarth's excellent 'Trafalgar: The Nelson Touch' in my late father's book collection. It seemed strange our town was named after this famous seafaring hero, yet I knew very little about him, and nor did anyone else. My play imagined Horatio returned from the dead, discov-

ering nobody in Nelson knew who he was, and organising a lecture to educate the citizens. Festival organisers invited me to re-invent Lord Nelson as a virtual host, and I enjoyed extending the character’s life, putting a little of Lord Nelson's spin on each video.” Watch: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=2msEKlHBJ7Q Eliane Polack – Royal Theatre: “We planned to host our annual Open Day as part of the festival, but once we knew the theatre would temporarily close, we produced a digital back-stage tour. We presented the theatre’s auditorium, the heritage part of the building. Technical Manager JR Richardson took viewers through the history of the oldest wooden functioning theatre in the Southern Hemisphere.” Watch: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=woE5Zo8ZF0I Natalie Gilberd – Nelson Provincial Museum: Our first online exhibition, Rugby: 150 Years On, was boosted thanks to Nelson City Council’s help projecting images marking the anniversary of New Zealand’s first ever game onto city landmarks. Plans are underway to launch a physical version of the exhibition. Watch: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=hbWv70UCEJM The Virtual Festival was an innovative way to showcase heritage during lockdown, but as restrictions ease, there are more opportunities to visit cultural sites in person. Take a walk to The Suter Art Gallery, visit the Museum’s

“Our Moon” exhibition (until 14 June), or catch a show at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts and Theatre Royal from the end of July. Many sites are free for locals; Founders Heritage Park and Broadgreen House are both open. The Founders café is under new ownership and open through winter (bar Mondays) or try the gorgeous Melrose Café, open all week.

Every time I’ve come in, I’ve had to drive around to get a carpark. It's worse than before lockdown - it wasn't great before either. Also, Stoke carpark is often so full these days. I want to see more parking in central Nelson and Stoke or I'll just be going out to the Richmond Mall area. Joanne Brydon Wellington

Civic House: I agree with Brian Woodward’s idea that Civic House could be redesigned. It may not cost that much as the tower could be done in reflective copper or gold, or perhaps you could grow something all over it. It would be much photographed and add to Nelson's image as an eco/artistic town. Perhaps local business would benefit, as more people would be attracted to visiting Nelson. Robert Leslie

Free parking concerns city business owners: Went into town and spent half an hour looking for a park - ridiculous! Hardly anyone shopping or in restaurants, so assuming its staff using up all the parks? Kim Lineham

I don't understand, if retail and businesses in town want people to shop then they need to stop parking in the city themselves all day. And advise their staff of the same. Simple. Businesses need to take some initiative, don't leave it all up to the council to sort. Lucy Mitchell

Took elderly non-driver to town to do errands, see accountant and have lunch, but spent so much time driving round and round looking for any carpark. Ended going out of town for lunch. The lack of parking was unbelievable! So why go there? Heather Steer

Richmond needs own identity: Comes from the days of the old provincial Governments. Nelson city was in the province of Nelson, which included much of what is now Tasman, as well as Kaikoura and Westport. Old habits die hard. Dennis Gibbs The first female meerkat for Natureland Wildlife Park has joined her new home meaning baby meerkats could be on the cards for the park as early as this summer. The female is unnamed, and Nelson Weekly is giving you the chance to win a family picnic at Natureland by sharing your name ideas. Manager Stephen Standley says ideally the name reflect their wild origin or African roots. Email your name choice to sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

We could not get a park anywhere in town, ended up just going home after driving around and shopped online. Sarah Mitchell I have popped into the Montgomery carpark twice recently in the hope of going to a cafe. The shops and cafes looked fairly quiet, but sadly no parks so I left empty handed. Robbie Mitchell Free parking is a joke. All the town workers are taking these parks and there are not many left for the actual shoppers.

Have been to town twice in last week and couldn’t get a park anywhere, have never had that problem before. Cheryl Remnant As with many others, no parks = no shopping. I tried to take my daughter for a milkshake/smoothie treat following orthodontic work last Friday (a real treat as we rarely ever buy food outside of supermarket shopping) but after driving around town and through all the carparks it was a McDonalds drive-through milkshake for her. Gutted as I really wanted to spend girlie time with her and support a

local small business while doing so, as is all the hype at present. Sharon Riley The parking situation is a nightmare. It’s as bad as Christmas week! The free parking means that business workers are parking for free, leaving nothing for customers. I spent 15 minutes last Friday trying to get a park. It totally puts me off shopping in the CBD and completely defeats the purpose of the free parking programme in the first place. Victoria Thomas Ashcroft

Nelson Matters Nelson is fortunate to have five top secondary Colleges with Waimea, Garin, Nayland, Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College. I have seen this excellence in my work as an MP, former Education Minister and parent of four teenagers. Three current issues concern me. The Government is pushing for restrictive college zoning to be introduced to Nelson next year. This means parents and students lose the choice of which college to attend. Our colleges have different strengths. The diversity of single sex, co-ed, religious, town and country colleges is good for Nelson. Our children are not all the same and thrive in different

environments. Parents and students having a choice of school also keeps the pressure on our colleges to strive to do better. Each of our colleges have been through difficult patches that have required reform. The loss of students and roll decline have been key drivers for change. The danger of restricting parental choice is that our colleges become tired and unresponsive to the changing needs of our young people. The impact of Nayland College being forced by Government to have an enrolment zone will most impact on Nelson city families who will lose the option of a co-ed education. I success-

fully joined with Nelson College a decade ago in opposing the Ministry imposing an enrolment zone banning boys from the wider Nelson region. My preferred policy for all five of our Nelson colleges is that families get to decide which school best suits their student, not Government. A second issue is unfair funding. Labour promised in 2017 to abolish school donations at all schools, replacing it with funding of $150 per student, but in Government, only did it for some schools. Two of our five secondary schools missed out, costing Waimea College $250,000 a year and Garin Col-

My observation is that media and weather presenters have a poor geographical understanding of where 'Nelson' actually is and that a fair majority of them refer to Nelson, when it is in fact Tasman District, which is where Richmond comes under. Craigie Glasgow

I grew up in Richmond and went through Henley Primary, Waimea Intermediate and College in the 60s and early 70s. Richmond has always considered itself a separate identity to Nelson and is very proud of that, although, these days there is no green separation as there was back then and has virtually become a suburb by default. Jim Partington

lege $77,000. The Government has created an anomaly where some colleges have to collect significant family donations and some not. This needs fixing. The third big issue for our colleges is the huge loss of international students from the Covid-19 emergency. Some of our colleges are facing losses of $500,000. The Government has denied access to the wage subsidy for affected staff. I have written to the Minister of Education appealing for assistance for our five colleges but to no avail. The priorities are wrong when the Government has given tens of millions to racing and professional sport. The Colleges are

having to make staff redundant. These huge losses will impact on the quality of education at all our colleges. Nelson’s high standard of secondary schools is something we must protect. The strong reputation helps attract skilled professionals to our region knowing their children will have access to a top education. We should maintain choice between colleges. Government funding should not force some colleges to charge significant donations and others not. Our colleges also urgently need assistance to deal with the fallout from the loss of international students. Advert.

Maitai River survey Nelson City Council is undertaking a survey of the Maitai River, starting from the Haven near the SH6 bridge, up to the Waahi Taakaro Reserve, to detect areas of gravel accumulation and river bank erosion to help manage flood risk. The survey will be completed over two weeks this month from 6 June, using a drone flown by a surveyor with a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Part 102 Certificate. Whilst a majority of the survey will take place above public land, there is the potential for the drone to fly over private properties in the immediate vicinity of the channel and river bank. The information and data gathered will help to assess flood capacities in the river, as well as providing modelling information of the river channel bed, which will be useful for future planning.

Haulashore Island community trapping project Nelson City Council, through its Nelson Nature programme, has helped establish a trapping project on Haulashore Island. Nelson Nature and the Parks and Facilities teams have facilitated the project and provided technical and logistical support for the group; Port Nelson is funding the costs of traps and transport to the island and the Nelson MenzShed built the traps. Volunteers have been checking the traps weekly since the traps were put out in December. The group aims to reduce rat and stoat numbers to extremely low levels to allow the resident penguins, nesting coastal birds and lizards to flourish.

City Centre Streets for People feedback survey opens What does the future of Nelson’s city centre streets look like? Nelson City Council is exploring how to improve pedestrian safety, visitor experience, consumer spending and activity in Nelson’s city centre, and needs your help. Through the City Centre Streets for People Survey, Council is seeking community feedback and ideas on four proposed options. Councillor Pete Rainey, Chair of the City Centre Working Group, said the survey was a chance for everyone to think about how they are using Nelson’s city centre and to consider whether it could be improved, and if so, how. “We think Nelson’s central city is already a pretty special place to work and visit, but as a Council we have big aspirations to make this area even better – a true heart of our region.”

PUBLIC NOTICES Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit (NRSBU) is in the process of renewing resource consents to authorise the application of biosolids to land (forestry blocks) at Moturoa/ Rabbit Island. Biosolids have been applied to land at Moturoa/ Rabbit Island since 1996. The existing discharge permit expires 8 November 2020. The NRSBU will also be applying for a resource consent to discharge odour generated by the biosolids operation to air. Due to COVID-19 restrictions Tasman District Council (the consent authority) has granted the NRSBU a 3-month extension in which the NRSBU must lodge a resource consent application. The application will be supported by an assessment of environmental effects and now needs to be lodged by 7 August 2020. As part of preparing the assessment of effects on the environment the NRSBU has commissioned a number of studies and expert consultants have been engaged to assess existing monitoring data and results including groundwater, soil, estuarine health and odour complaints. The NRSBU has commissioned NIWA to undertake a public health risk assessment. The application will also consider alternative options for biosolids disposal as required under the Resource Management Act. The NRSBU is engaging with Te Tau Ihu Iwi and key stakeholders including the District Health Board, environmental interest groups, recreational users of Moturoa/ Rabbit Island and the neighbouring Best Island and Mapua communities. If you want to find out more and receive updates on the project as it progresses, please email your details to the consent manager Katherine Forward katherine.forward@duncancotterill.com

This is in response to Council receiving feedback that some drivers have been staying longer than the allowed time limits, meaning it has become increasingly difficult to find a park and this is not aiding the economic recovery essential to city centre businesses.

Nelson’s historic Broadgreen House has reopened Broadgreen Society President Mary Gavin said Broadgreen’s volunteers were excited to reconnect with their fellow guides and the visiting public. “The guides take great pleasure sharing the stories of the Broadgreen with our locals and visitors to the area.” Broadgreen House is open 11am-3pm every day, and entry is free for Nelson and Tasman residents.

At Kono, we love wine. We love making it. We love that wine brings people together and enhances the moment. Thoughtfulness, kindness and hospitality are central to our identity as Māori. We value people above all things, and in nurturing others, we uplift ourselves. One of our core values, manaakitanga encapsulates care and respect for people and relationships, including the natural environment. It governs the way we interact with one another. An essential part of Māori culture is our desire to feed and nurture people. Sharing food is a traditional way of bringing people together. We demonstrate our love and respect for people by providing them with outstanding food and wine. We believe a wine should encapsulate a place and time. Our Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Rosé are produced from grapes sourced from vineyards located here in the Nelson region. Each have their own unique macro climate and soil type, each producing wine that encapsulates the characteristics of a warm climate with high sunshine hours. They are a true expression of our region’s stunning terroir. Discover Kono Wines https://www.konowines.co.nz/ The Garden Window is branching out! Following on from our successful ventures in Stoke we have opened a new branch as a “Country Store” on the site of the former Washington Valley dairy. Pies! Pies! Pies! Our kiosk customers will remember the pies......at Washington Valley the pies were well established, so we are bringing them back! We will have all your favourite flavours sourced from Motueka and will also be running our own range of gourmet pies – available at all our locations. We also have all the favourites, hot fries, milkshakes, fizzy drinks and chocolates. If you are looking for plant based options we also have you covered there, rolling out a selection of treats from one of our kitchens. We are really excited about how the shop is coming together – it will be a work in progress but please come down and say hi, it will be great to meet you!

Are you looking for a bed that is stylish, comfortable and custom-made just for you? When you buy from Nelson Beds they promise you the sleep of your life. They are the longest-standing speciality bed store in Nelson, producing their own high-quality beds for more than 25 years. “We hear stories of people who have paid a lot for a bed which turns out to be of substandard quality – three months after they have bought it, the mattress is buckled or it’s falling apart,” says Nelson Beds Director, Dave Bary. “So, they come to see us at Nelson Beds. We stand out from the rest because we work with high quality materials. We know what beds are worth so we can keep our costs down. Every bed we design and build, we custom-make to suit your requirements and can even craft beds for caravans, trucks, boats or sleepers.” Only the best will do for Dave Bary, whose descendants opened the general store in Renwicktown way back in 1880. “We are a business that is founded on a long history of dedication to the region,” says Dave. Now that New Zealand is officially Covid-free and we have gone down to level 1, Nelson business owners, employees and residents are this week expressing relief and joy that life has returned to normal. On Monday June 8th, the 75th day our county had been a Covid alert level, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the announcement that at as of midnight, alert level 1 would take effect. The announcement was made two hours after health officials confirmed that New Zealand had no active cases of Covid-19. Ms Ardern said that, ‘New Zealand went hard and early to protect lives and livelihoods,’ and praised the way everyone ‘united in unprecedented ways to crush the virus.’ The government’s early implementation of border controls and the timing of the first economic package including the ‘critically important’ wage sub-

sidy scheme for businesses were considered crucial to the success of the lockdown and the way in which kiwis adhered to alert level rules. Now that we are in alert level 1, social distancing is no longer required and there are no more limits for gatherings. Therefore, public and private events can go ahead without limitation and retail and hospitality can return to their normal operations without restrictions. Public transport and travel across the country is also fully open. For now, our borders will remain closed and managed isolation and quarantine at the border will continue. Businesses or services where the public enter are being asked to allow customers to maintain their own diaries of where they have been, and QR code posters are still being encouraged and available for customers to use, but manual sign-in is no longer required. People are

Restrictions on the number of people attending church gatherings, weddings and funerals are now lifted, sports events can go ahead with large crowds of cheering spectators, and people out socialising can hit the dance floor once again.

The announcement of Alert level 1 will be welcome news to those who run local events or concerts, and undoubtedly there will be some exciting entertainment opportunities ahead for locals and visitors to look forward to. Nelsonians are reminded to keep shopping local, keep using local

services, and keep supporting local cafés and bars throughout the winter period which is typically the hardest time for our economy. Are you wondering where to take you family on holiday? Think about all the incredible places to explore in our own beautiful backyard!

Nelson Suburbs have restarted its season with a 3-1 loss to defending champions Cashmere Technical at Saxton Field on Sunday afternoon.

eventually proved too much. Skipper Sam Ayers says it was a disappointing result after having the visitors on the ropes. "We did well to get ahead but just let ourselves down with three soft goals." Sam says it requires a 90-minute performance to beat a classy side like Cashmere. "We just lost our shape a little bit and if you give them any chance, they will take it." Both sides had opportunities to score in a tight first half but ultimately neither could break the deadlock. Corey Wilson was peppered ingoal by Cashmere's strikers but was up to the task as the teams went to the sheds at 0-0. It didn't take long after the resumption for the scoring to start as Jordan Yong rocketed home a cross from Alex Ridsdale after a couple of header attempts in the box. However, Cashmere did not take long to respond as Garbhan Coughlan evened the honours before Seth Clarke took the lead less than five minutes later. The carnage continued as Lyle Mattheson netted a third goal for Cashmere to put the result

Of course, another barrier to completion was the national lockdown. “Everything was ready to go, but the underlay arrived in Nelson from overseas literally the day we went into lockdown.” However, despite the trials, the school raised the funds thanks to a huge community collaboration.

Jon says it has been a long road from conception to creation. “They probably thought I was a bit mad at the start but look where we are now.” He says the turf is for the community and he hopes it is well used. “It’s a fantastic facility, we are very proud and just looking forward to seeing people out here.”

After 18 months of planning and fundraising, Nelson College for Girls has officially opened its new multipurpose astroturf. The Bronte St sports arena caters for a range of sports from basketball to netball, futsal and hockey. It replaces asphalt courts which were over 50-years-old, with cracks, weeds and poor drainage. Sports director Jon Routhan says the state of the courts was one of the reasons he began the project. “It made little sense to me to have a great usable space just sitting there.” A massive fundraising effort was required to make the idea a reality, with more that $100,000 needed for the new facility. Jon first approached the board in November 2018 to seek approval and started the process

s w e N g n i h s Fi Brownie points Tracey Meek Launching early to avoid the boat ramp rush, two keen Dawnbreakers members set off to their favourite spot X for a quiet, yet hopeful fish. The day began chilly, but as the sun rose and the coffee was poured the snapper began to bite – It was going to be a great day! With little wind, just 2 knots and calm seas and fish biting, it was the perfect morning.... Until things took a turn for the worse. A brief quiet patch meant time to sip that coffee, now luke warm, when disaster struck. The rod and reel sitting in the new Railblaza suddenly jumped out the holder. Coffee went flying through the boat in a mad attempt to catch the rod but all they could do was watch it disappear over the side.

Sadness loomed as the reality of seeing their brand new rod and reel sink to the depths of the ocean sank in. A call to a friend to relay the sad story and some hopeful words of “keep fishing you never know what might happen as the tide turns” was not enough to lift the spirits. Like all keen fishos they continued to fish. The tide turned and so did their luck. Thinking he had a tangle, he asked his wife, “What colour line do you have?” “No, not mine”. Slowly he pulled up his line and tangled to his braid was someone else’s line. Pulling it in carefully he soon discovered a little weight – not from a fish either. They couldn’t believe it, he had snagged the missing fishing rod and reel. What are the chances of that? Suffice to say he was in the good books for the rest of the day.

Nelson City Council has come up with some ideas – see the options we’ve put forward and give us your views in the City Centre Streets for People survey: shape.nelson.govt.nz/city-centre-streets-for-people Survey closes 5pm, 26 June 2020. Nelson City Council, in accordance with section 82 of the Local Government Act 2002(LGA), seeks public feedback to gauge the level of support for semi-permanent tactical responses to increase pedestrian amenity, safety and activity in the city centre.

An injection of Fijian flair has bolstered the Nelson College First XV as the side looks to emulate its historic run of 2019. The school kicks off its 2020 campaign this Saturday with a pre-season fixture against Waimea and Marlborough College. With just seven returning players, there will be plenty of new faces running out onto the hallowed front field this season. Among them will be brothers Fijian Nic and Timi Sauria in the backline and blockbusting loose forward Netani Baleisomosomo. Standing at a formidable 1.90 cm and weighing 115 kg, Netani will bring some much-needed size and strength in the wake of departing captain Anton Segner. The 17-year-old grew up in a small village in the Tailevu Province where he started playing rugby at the age of seven. However, because the village was scarce on resources, Netani and his friends were forced to play with rolled up clothing as a ball. His talents were soon recognised as he made Fijian age grade sides and starred at the prestigious Queen Victoria School. The young behemoth was then

Having grown up idolising the likes of Fijian wrecking ball Josua Tuisova, Netani hopes to use his power to score a few tries and bruise some bodies along the way. “I like to run over people and bump them off.” Conversely, Nic, 15, and Timi, 17, will bring the traditional fleet Fijian feet to the fray as the young brothers hope to spark an inexperienced backline. The brothers say they have a healthy rivalry in the team which helps keep each other

motivated. “Being the older one he is always pushing me to be better,” Timi says. Nic says he looks up to his brother and follows his lead. “If he goes out to do fitness, I’ll go out and do it too.” The Sauria name is well respected in Nelson rugby circles with the boys’ father Seta Sauria a Marist club legend. The boys recently made the switch from Nelson to Marist, much to the delight of their old man. Nic and Timi say while they feel a bit of pressure following in the footsteps of the 2019 class, they are confident of another successful season. “We want to go back to back.” Nelson vs Waimea/Marlborough Jubilee Park, 12pm, Saturday.

1.11.1969 - 9.6.2019 One year ago today, My gorgeous wife Janene passed away WHY Ever since you went away The days go slowly by, And the hardest thing to copy with Is ever knowing why.... That I don’t understand And maybe I never will, Questions left unanswered Now your voice is still. To lose you was unbearable And time and time again, I’ve tried to look for reasons, That no one can explain. Life and death hold mysteries But one thing is for sure I love you bigger than space then, I love you bigger than space now, And will forevermore..... Your loving wife Tanya and families xxx
