‘We can fight this if we’re loud enough’ Kate Russell Nelson parents have spoken, and they want a co-ed secondary school in the city. With the news that Nayland College will be implementing a zone from the beginning of 2022, parents have come forward with their concerns about there being no co-ed choice in Nelson, in a newlycreated Facebook group. ‘Whanau for Co-educational Choice’ has quickly grown to nearly 250 members in just one week, with its creator Jaynie Holmes saying they won’t be giving up without a fight. “With Nayland College zoned, it would leave only singlesex school options for our children - Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls. “We don't live in a single-sex world, so why should a singlesex school be forced on us?” The mother of six says she already has one year nine student at Nayland College, and is distraught her other children may not be able to attend there. Several members of the group have written to the Ministry
of Education, and a petition to parliament asking for the legislation to be changed to require the ministry to offer co-ed college education for all New Zealanders is due to be launched. “It should be a human right,” says Jaynie. Nelson Weekly reported on 1 July that the ministry would be introducing a zone for the Stoke college, due to it rapidly nearing its 1330 student capacity. Principal Daniel Wilson says the decision is “out of their control” with the ministry stating that there were no options for the school to expand. The ministry has told the Weekly that “a new secondary school is not needed [in Nelson] in the next few years”. “[Nayland College] has experienced an increased demand for enrolments, while Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College have experienced a decline in enrolments,” says Katrina Casey, Deputy Secretary, Sector Enablement and Support.

Matariki back with a bang Lights, song and a spectacular fireworks display at Neale Park sponsored by Pomeroy’s will round off Nelson City Council’s Matariki Festival this Saturday. Unique to this year’s festival is a tribute in the form of images of essential service workers and messages of thanks that will be beamed onto the side of Civic House in a light art display during
the evening’s celebrations. The entire event will be livestreamed on council’s Facebook page and YouTube channel - but for those attending in person, free buses to see the fireworks will be available to and from Akersten St before and after the display. Volunteers from Coastguard Nelson will also be out collecting
donations for their new vessel in the Akersten St area. Mayor Rachel Reese says Matariki is a time to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and to look forward to the future. “The past few months have been a challenging time for all of us and the determination, resilience and strength our community has shown has been incredible.”

“While there are several developments in the northern Nelson area, our planning does not show that they will result in significant secondary schoolaged population growth. The additional students will be able to be accommodated within the current schooling provision.” Katrina also stated that should the boards of Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College and their communities request that the ministry work with them to consider the possibility of them providing co-educational schooling, they would do so. Mischief hitches a ride NEWS from Motueka to Nelson
Permission sought for restoring headstones: Brian McIntyre, who has so far restored more than 2000 gravestones in the Wakapuaka Cemetery, wants to hear from anyone who does not want their family’s site touched. “We had an instance recently where someone complained that we had restored the headstone. So far, we have only had permission from 15 families - that’s 2185 headstones we wouldn’t have been able to do if we had to wait for permission,” says Brian. “If anyone doesn’t want their family site touched please let us know.” Brian can be contacted on 0275480757.

A Motueka cat called Mischief has lived up to his name after hitching a ride on a house bus to Nelson and finding shelter at the Labour party campaign office on Vanguard St. There he stayed for two weeks, until he was finally discovered. The seven-year-old tabby was reported missing last month by his owner Tony Reynolds. Tony says he had sold his house bus last month - but little did he know that when the buyer came to pick it up and drive off, Mischief was hiding in the back of it. It is thought that he jumped off the bus when it stopped for gas at Z Rutherford St. Labour candidate for Nelson, Rachel Boyack, says she and her team were at the office last Tuesday night when they discovered Mischief, trapped under the building. “My campaign team thought that I was mad, as I was convinced I could hear a cat. We found him under the

Photo: Supplied. office and managed to pull him out through the grate.” Thanks to a quick response from the Nelson SPCA, Mischief was taken in and got a “much-needed feed”. Rachel says she shared a post on Facebook, and his owner was found by the next morning. Tony says he had a suspicion that Mischief may have got on the bus, but he is over the moon to have him back home.
“He’s back hiding under the blankets like he usually does, and our other cat Charlie was happy to see him. She was pretty sad when he went missing.” Tony says he didn’t think he would ever see Mischief again. “He’d lost a bit of weight, but he was fine. He knew who I was as soon as he saw me and hasn’t left my side since. I’ve suffered from anxiety -
especially with the Covid-19 lockdown – so he’s been my rock. “Rachel and the SPCA were so amazing, I’m so rapt.” Mischief has now been microchipped in the event of any future road trips. And, while Tony says he is a Labour supporter himself, he is now certain that Mischief must be too. “He’s become a bit of a celebrity, really.”
Three people rescued from burning house: Firefighters and neighbours helped three people escape a burning house in Nelson early on Thursday morning. Fire and emergency said the Tipahi St property, in Nelson South, was well alight when the alarm was raised shortly before 3.30am. Four fire crews brought the flames under control with an investigator at the scene later in the morning. All occupants of the house were unharmed. Nelson property market steady: The impact of Covid-19 and the ensuing economic shutdown is beginning to show on the property market, according to the latest QV House Price Index results - but the Nelson region seems to be faring well. Nelson, Napier and Rotorua all saw modest growth in property values during June with Nelson’s average monthly property values rising 0.5 per cent - the second highest monthly growth in the country. Invercargill saw the greatest increase at 1.7 per cent, with Queenstown seeing the greatest drop in values down 2.1 per cent.

Nelson businesses develop expat network Locally Owned and Operated
Tracy Neal of RNZ Businesses in Nelson and Tasman have developed their own promotion network overseas, using expatriates to help peddle their wares. Nelson Expats Abroad (NEA) has been initiated as part of Project Kōkiri which was established by local agencies in response to the economic impacts of Covid-19. The aim is to create an initial network of 1000 ambassadors in time for the campaign launch on 20 July.
Alison Boswijk of the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce says the model is based on the nationwide model, KEA. KEA connects New Zealand with the rest of the world through the work of global citizens who took an active interest in the future of the country. Alison says the purpose of NEA is to build a network of ambassadors who are willing to promote the region, using their social channels. She said the time was right to
establish the network. "People move away for all sorts of reasons - career, family, education or simply to see the world. We hear from many who have left that Nelson-Tasman is the place they hold dear to their hearts and they plan to return.” Alison says NEA ambassadors are encouraged to register online via the Project Kōkiri website at www.projectkokiri.nz Ambassadors do not have to live overseas, and anyone in New Zealand is welcome to register.
"It is important they are willing to help us tell their friends and colleagues about this great region using their own networks, and naturally we will supply them with the creative content to do this,” says Alison. "We are a small but highly connected region - we want to take advantage of this and use it to spread the word. It's easy to register, we do not need vast amounts of information from people, just where they are in the world and get a sense of what they do."

NEW TOILET BLOCK FOR LIONS PLAYGROUND: It is anticipated that the new public toilet block for the Tāhunanui Lions playground will be built in time for this summer. According to Nelson City Council, the toilets will cost $798,000 and they have received a $250,000 government grant towards the project - meaning the council will be spending $548,000. The toilets were designed by Jerram Tocker Barron Architects and will be constructed by Coman Construction. The new block will feature six toilets and four changing rooms made of prefabricated cubicles, installed into an overarching structure. There will also be three outdoor showers and a drinking fountain with place to fill water bottles. Photo: Supplied.

Focus on Nelson’s Future Access Locally Owned and Operated
Nelson Future Access has presented three long-term options for Nelson’s transport woes. Not all of these will be submitted for funding and Waka Kotahi NZTA want your help to decide which package or combination of packages will work best for Nelson and the surrounding region. Over the next two weeks Sara Hollyman looks into what each of the tabled options will mean for Nelson. Inland Route Package AKA the Southern Link COST: $190–220M (A cut and cover underpass at the Toi Toi and St Vincent Street intersection would add an extra $30 to $40M). This package is similar to the Southern Link, but not the same according to NZTA, although it looks at building a new road along the same corridor through the Railway Reserve and St Vincent St. The main difference between this package and the Southern Link is that the new road could be configured in different ways; for instance, be used as a route for priority vehicles such as buses and vehicles with multiple occupants rather than as the main state highway. Nelson MP Nick Smith has championed for the Southern Link to join the Stoke Bypass for a decade and says it doesn’t matter what it’s called, its Nelson’s only way forward.
Nelson MP Nick Smith on Beatson Rd, where a new road could be built alongside as part of the inland route proposal. Photo: Sara Hollyman. “I don’t mind what we call it as long as it is well designed and addresses Nelson’s critical transport issues.” He says the reasons that it is the “best option” is because it has the least impact by passing the least number of households and
schools, is the shortest route and is the safest option. “The great advantage of the inland route is it enables us to do a really good job of converting Rocks Rd into a boulevard for walking and cycling without 3000 trucks and 16000 other

vehicles passing each day. The package states it is likely that a 5-metre cycle and walkway along Rocks Rd could occur sooner if the inland route is found to be the preferred way forward. A Nelson Future Access panel of experts say this option would be less susceptible to climate change than the other packages and would provide extra traffic capacity, but say it would need to address negative impacts similar to those raised in response to the previous Southern Link proposal, including air quality concerns that could be “challenging to mitigate”. As part of addressing these impacts, a ‘cut and cover’ option could be included which would see the road go underneath the Toi Toi St intersection in a tunnel type scenario. “The detailed design around things like the cut and cover and how we can make a vibrant Victory Village alongside the highway is the critical design that needs to take place with the community,” says Nick. Nelson City councillor Matt Lawrey says there is another important aspect Nelsonians need to consider with this option.
“It would more than likely, almost certainly, mean the moving of the state highway. If you move the highway, then the waterfront (Rocks Rd) would become the responsibility of the council and the ratepayers. That is a very expensive piece of road to hold up.” Waka Kotahi NZTA regional director relationships Jim Harland says it is too early in the process to make decisions around whether the highway would move or not. “If it was to move, we (NZTA) could do a swap in effect and hand the other road back to local authority, but in some parts of the country we keep both because of a matter of resilience, so that’s something that would be discussed.” Matt says the new road may provide congestion relief for a while but if you don’t change the way in which people get around the problem just comes back. “History tells us you can’t build your way out of congestion. We’ve got a fantastic example of that in Nelson, because Whakatu Dr was built to reduce the traffic on Main Rd, Stoke and today the traffic on Main Rd is about the same as it was when they built Whakatu Dr.”

Mentors needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
For Nelson man Tim Cross, the best thing about becoming a “Big Brother” mentor has been making a friend for life. He and his “match” Jordan, 16, are now moving into their tenth year of friendship, thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman. “My journey with Jordan began on the day of his seventh birthday. This lively young boy was only just up to my waist, had no front teeth and could barely reach the pedals on his first two-wheeler bicycle,” says Tim. “Nine years later we are still together,
and he is now almost as tall as me, shaves daily and has asked me to teach him to drive a car.” Big Brothers Big Sisters has been providing mentoring friendships to children in need of additional adult support for 22 years. But with 55 children on their waiting list, they are in dire need of more mentors. Just one hour per week is required, where pairs can kick a ball around, play games or go for a walk on the beach. Tim says it has been a “hugely rewarding” time in his life and encourages others to give it a go. “Nine years is a long time and Jordan has grown so much in so
many ways in the time we have had together. He has become a very active young man who is involved with many community activities and he has a very positive outlook on life. “The change from the young and shy, socially awkward and reticent seven year old to the now confident and focussed young man has been a delight to watch, and a pleasure for me
to realise I have had a positive change in his life.” Tim says he has received so much back in return. “This has been a real bonus for me.” Programme director Chelsea Routhan says they would especially love to get more male mentors on board. “We have a lot of young boys on our list, aged from six to

Sky Davies, manager of Tasman Environmental Trust, and project manager Julie Newell welcome the government’s funding boost for the Waimea Inlet. Photo: Matt McCrorie.
Financial boost to restore Waimea Inlet Matt McCrorie The internationally-significant Waimea Inlet has received a welcome funding boost from the government. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced last week a package of 23 projects across the country that will clean up the nation’s waterways and create over 2000 jobs. $1.6 million has been allocated across two environmental projects based in the Waimea Inlet. Tasman mayor Tim King has welcomed the funding boost from the government to an area that has seen a lot of work in recent years. “This funding recognises what’s been achieved so far and gives us the chance to carry that on and do even more in future.” The Waimea Inlet is the largest semi-enclosed estuary in the South Island. The Waimea Inlet Enhancement project has been given $500,000 to fund actions in an existing plan that weren’t budgeted for, which will include improving water quality of tributaries feeding into the inlet, increasing saltmarsh habitat, creating a habitat restoration strategy for the inlet, and ongoing weed control of inlet margins. The second project is The Waimea Inlet Billion Trees project, which has received funding of $1.1 million
for another 70,000 trees to be planted and maintained, which will cover around 60-70 hectares of the Waimea Inlet margins. This funding continues planting work that was funded in 2019. Sky Davies, manager of Tasman Environmental Trust, says that the boost is “really exciting”. She says that Tasman Environmental Trust has a collaborative goal with the Tasman District Council and the Department of Conservation to improve the health of the inlet. “This funding will allow for a lot more planting, and it will create more jobs in restoration work,” Sky says. The $1.1 million announced for estuary habitat work will build on the planting programme that was funded by the government’s one billion trees scheme. This will bring the number of shrubs and trees planted in the inlet to over 170,000 in the next few years. “This is a phenomenal funding boost towards the work that we’ve been doing,” says Sky. Sky says that the funding boost has highlighted the importance of the Waimea Inlet. “This funding is building on a huge amount of enthusiasm for the inlet and it's great to have central government recognise that.” Up to 14 new environmental jobs could be created as a result of the funding boost.

Opinion
Your Voice Maitai Valley development: Nelson City Council has once again ignored previous submissions from the public, and even its own staff reports, by supporting the big development in the Maitai Valley that could have huge costs for ratepayers. The irony cannot be lost, when the public elected a “Green” council that was supposed to guard the environment. The Local Government Act allows council to put the entire infrastructure cost of development onto developers. Not so in Nelson, where sweet deals are foisting those costs onto the ratepayers. Let this development stand on its own two feet - if the developers cannot pay the costs, it should not proceed. If our “Green” councillors don’t show some backbone, they should be voted out next election. Dan McGuire Southern Link: I am grateful that we have people like Kerry Neal (8.7.20) who recognise that the increasing population of Nelson makes the Southern Link vital. Rocks Rd and Waimea Rd have been congested for years. Why do the authorities not understand or see this? I imagine that they will spend another 40 years having lots of meetings to discuss the question. Ruth Suckling Focus on Nelson’s future access: What is it going to achieve going down the
Railway Reserve today? The route down St Vincent St is not going to improve traffic, especially when going through a built-up area with three schools and a kindy. David Scott
The problem is congestion coming into Nelson from the Richmond/Tasman area. Widening Rocks Rd is a short-term solution and so is the Railway Reserve. I thought councils were meant to look at long term options, not put a band aid on issues. There are too many vehicles on our roads into Stoke, Tahuna and Nelson … put huge car parks along key routes and then bus people into and out of Nelson … this would only work if buses were scheduled more often every day. Kahurangi Hippolite Why don't more people ride their bikes to work or use public transport? Then there would not be so much congestion on the roads and we wouldn't have to waste a s*** load of money building/widening roads that will only work for a very short amount of time. Diane Thomas We need better public transport. Half the people that are being stuck in traffic everyday are single occupants, one car, one person. Makes no sense. Get on your bikes even. More roads are the last thing we need. Ara Wiringi Nelson’s big slow down: Love it. No need to go over 30km in the CBD

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz and on our narrow streets. Often, it's impossible to do so anyway. People would find they get to where they want to on time by practicing good time management skills. Leave early to arrive on time. Dennis Goodman The Brook Terrace has three houses down it, it’s more of a driveway! 30km limit yet 120km down Brook St! Yep, that will save lives. Andrea Warn Now everyone will be doing 10km. Mick Zeewoldt Causes more accidents than good. Tracy Jackson Great, sick of seeing hoons treating it like a racetrack. Brenda Kenny Extra time allowed to get to work. What a ridiculous suggestion, but very typical of this council. Wendy Thomas Great - and during the day you can't with a good consciousness drive any faster anyways. Anne Braunsteiner Nelson Youth Theatre left $15k out of pocket: Disappointing. Hopefully you will get some of the dollars back. Thoroughly enjoyed Mamma Mia. The performers are amazing. Very slick show. Looking forward to your next shows. Thank you for the effort and time you put into keeping this theatre alive and the youth of Nelson involved in theatre productions. Maree Park
Poppy wrongfully impounded, says owner: So glad you got your baby back, Jodie. And, I really hope they find the right person and dog. Karina Tasker What a scary experience that would be. Would make you so angry. Jessica Smith I'm backing Jodie and Poppy all the way. Emma May Seems we here in Nelson have got one of the worst councils and pounds. They never advertise dogs; they seem to be targeting certain dogs and throwing around menacing/dangerous classifications without proper justification. No dog should be classed like this unless it has been aggressive without provocation. Defending its property should not be justification. Oh, and let's not forget the criminally-high dog registration we pay here. Nelson would have to be one of the highest in the country, it's only $50 in Richmond yet $90.80 in Nelson. I'm appalled with this council’s attitude. Dee Wilkins Years ago, my old dog was harassed by the dog control. She was the sweetest thing, but hated the dog control man, she would bark and growl at him whenever he came around. Fast forward a few years, someone got bitten on Vanguard St. They came and impounded her for no good reason. She was in the pound for a few days and the person who got bitten was asked to come
Nelson Matters I have two core worries for Nelson and New Zealand’s future. Job losses and debt. National this week outlined our economic plan to get NZ working again. We have a jobs crisis. Unemployment numbers nationally hit 200,000 this month, the worst in 25 years. Nelson has had the fastest increase of any region with jobless numbers more than doubling from 2,000 to 4,200. Young people are being hit the hardest with our unemployment rate for under 30s the worst in New Zealand. This unemployment problem began before Covid-19. National’s strong economic management saw unemployment numbers drop every year from
2010 to 2017. Unemployment benefit numbers grew by 10,000 in 2018 and another 13,000 in 2019. They are now increasing at 40,000 per month since April. The problems will compound when the Government’s wage subsidies end in October. We need a relentless focus on saving jobs. That is why I have campaigned so strongly for port access of foreign boats for Nelson’s marine engineering industry and for the retention of Air New Zealand’s regional maintenance base at Nelson Airport. The Government’s reticence or silence on these issues shows they do not get it. I am equally concerned about debt. The Government is spend-
ing and borrowing at unprecedented rates all of which will need to be repaid. $25 billion or $16,000 per household has already been spent and Labour’s intention is to borrow over $140 billion or $80,000 per household. This scale of debt will leave New Zealand no room for decades to deal with future disasters or downturns. Labour thinks the answer to every problem is big spending. I see waste like the $570,000 on a slide at Parliament and $10 million in grants to AJ Hackett’s bungee business. $400 million has been spent on Kiwibuild that was meant to build 10,000 homes per year but delivered only 400 in three years. $1900 million was
identify the offending dog. Needless to say, it was not her! Stress and pain for all involved. Can't believe this sort of thing is still going on. Sort your s*** out, Nelson City Council. Carleen Shallcrass
Not to mention the atrocious conditions of the pound. I feel sick knowing that poor dog was wrongly put there for weeks. Shelley Bishop
This is appalling, dog control is incompetent and make things worse for people and dogs alike. The council should get rid of them and get some people who understand dogs and take care when they are impounding dogs and harassing people. Dog control should behave in a responsible and careful way and make sure they are dealing with the right dogs at the very least. Deb Thompson
The sad thing is that council are often prepared to spend big on cases that are either bureaucratic hogwash and both ethically and morally wrong. Most people can't afford to take them on. Helen Black
They took our border collie because it barked at them trying to come in our gate what do you expect when an unknown person is at the gate of a dog’s house? Jason Rowling NCC dog control is corrupt and have been for over 25 years now. Sarah Hall
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
announced for mental health in budget 2019. It has not made it to front line services and core services like Nikau House are being closed. Millions have been spent on Auckland light rail but is wasted with it now being cancelled. We need to be more prudent and focus on quality of spending. The borrowing should be for assets and infrastructure so we grow New Zealand’s balance sheet over coming years. That way we pass on to the next generation valuable assets alongside the debt. Labour is squandering New Zealand’s strong finances with Government’s nett worth declining from $143 billion ($75,000 per household) to just
$33 billion ($17,000 per household). National’s leader Todd Muller outlined National’s five point plan last week covering responsible economic management, delivering infrastructure, reskilling and retraining the workforce, building a greener/smarter future and stronger communities. It will deliver more jobs and less debt. I commend the detail at national.org.nz. It is good that New Zealand has come through the Covid-19 health emergency better than most countries. National’s plan best equips New Zealand to navigate our way through the jobs and economic crisis ahead. Advert.

CAFE AND BAR LOCATED IN THE BEAUTIFUL FOUNDERS HERITAGE PARK
FAMILY FRIENDLY, OUTDOOR / INDOOR FLOW LOCAL KONO WINE AND CRAFT BEERS
Founders Café is a local family-owned licensed bar and café, serving fresh baking, comfort food, barista-made coffee and local craft beers. “Founders Café is very much a family-oriented business which involves all of our family members,” says Amie-Jo Trayes, who runs the café with the support of her husband and children, who enjoy helping to clear the tables from time to time. When she took over the business, Amie-Jo had a vision to recapture the feel of the café when it was
owned by the Duncan family. Located in beautiful Founders Heritage Park, the café is the kind of place you will want to linger for a while, relax with a coffee or beer and enjoy good company. The adjacent playground area is wonderful for families and the meeting rooms are perfect for community groups or business gatherings. With a fireplace recently installed and firewood delivered, you will be warm and cosy when you visit Founders Café.

For over 30 years, Craig Ashton has locally owned and operated Nelson Motorhomes Ltd. In its central, high-profile location at 133 St Vincent Street, Nelson Motorhomes is very busy this winter with lots of people deciding to travel around New Zealand who are looking to hire a motorhome or have their existing one repaired. “Just recently my daughter Cait has moved back from the North Island so it’s great to have her working for me in administration and the shop, and my son Blair who has
also come onboard and is assisting me in the workshop,” says Craig. With three other businesses to look after too, Craig is happy that Cait will be helping out with the decision-making going forward. Craig says the focus for Nelson Motorhomes is mainly on repairs now. “We also do plumbing, we supply appliances, we do 12 volt and 230 volt wiring, electrical and solar equipment, plumbing and gas equipment and fibreglass and panel repairs.” Craig, Blair and Cait Ashton

Young conductor brings baton to Nelson At just 24-years-old, Nelson-born Costa Simpson is reaching for the high notes. The young conductor is returning home to lead the Chroma Chamber Choir at the NCMA on 25 July. Born in Waimea West, Costa attended Nelson College and is currently undertaking postgraduate study at the University of Auckland under the tutelage of internationally
recognised choral conductor Dr Karen Grylls. “It’s been an honour to study under Professor Grylls over the last four years. She is an inspiring and demanding teacher,” he says. Earlier this year, Costa was the recipient of a fellowship in conducting with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, allowing him to travel to Wellington and work with the orchestra and its principal conductor-in-residence,
Hamish McKeich. He also directs the Aucklandbased ensemble Orlando Singers and has engagements with the Saint Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra. He also recently completed a two-year stint as organ scholar at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph under James Tibbles. The upcoming NCMA concert features a cappella choral music based on the different times of

day, from morning through night, spanning composers as diverse as the sixteenth-century Englishman Thomas Tallis, to contemporary composers Ola Gjeilo and Eric Whitacre. “I’m particularly interested in the contrasting psychological and emotional effects the different times of day can have on us, and how that might have changed throughout time,” says Costa. The concert was meant to take place in May but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Costa says choral music’s unique power to heal and comfort is well established, and he hopes that the “uplifting and reflective” programme will be a tonic for nerves frayed by the trials and stresses of the pandemic. The first rehearsal in March was led by Costa, and since then they have been conducted by Nelson City councillor Pete Rainey. Costa arrived in Nelson this week, with several intensive rehearsals planned. He will be returning for a concert in October at the Nelson Cathedral, and, next year, he intends to travel overseas to audition for postgraduate programmes in conducting.

Costa says, while he expects to remain overseas during his early career, Nelson will always be his “spiritual home”. “I hope to be able to live and work in the region at a later stage of my life, and to give back to the musical community that supported me so generously in my youth.” The Chroma Chamber Choir performance is on Saturday, 25 July, 4pm at the NCMA auditorium. Tickets are available from the eventfinda.co.nz or the NCMA box office.

College halfback defies his size Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson College halfback Justin Yokoyama may be short in stature but his presence on the footy field is becoming a huge part of his side's success. Standing at just 5'2" and weighing only 60kg, Justin has come up against players almost twice his size in the UC Championship this season. The diminutive halfback starred in Nelson's dominant 41-0 victory over St Thomas at home on Friday afternoon. He says it was great to be back on the front field after a tough couple of games on the road. "We worked really hard fixing things that went wrong last week, the scoreboard shows how hard we have been working." Scoring a try and assisting in two others, Justin is growing in confidence during his second season with the 1st XV. "I was a bit nervous coming on from the sideline last year, but I feel more confident and know my game a bit better this season." He says it can sometimes be
daunting being dwarfed by opposition players, but he shows no fear. "I just make sure I do my job and make those tackles, but if I don’t, I know my teammates have my back." Nelson's win last week sees them sitting third on the UC Championship points table, three shy of leaders Christ’s College. The defending champions were in ominous form early on, hooker Dylan Irvine opening the scoring as he finished off a slick move at the front of the lineout after just five minutes. The blockbusting Netani Baleisomosomo scored the host's second after a Charlie Perkins break, the big Fijian far too powerful from just a metre out. Justin then sneaked over to score an opportunist try just before halftime as a five-metre scrum screwed fortuitously in his favour, leaving the line wide open for him which he gleefully took advantage of. Ahead 17-0 at the break, Nelson struck shortly after the resumption after Luc WatermanThomas exploded through a hole to gas the cover defence and nab

A quick tap by Justin led to a fifth as he spotted space out wide with the Nelson backs showing slick hands to get it to Nelesani Malulau who finished off in style. Netani heaped more misery on St Thomas with his second before centre Nic Sauria sealed
the win and capped his strong performance with a sixth Nelson try under the sticks. Nelson's win was its fourth of the season after dropping its first game to St Bedes in Christchurch. This Saturday sees the traditional rivalry against Marlborough Boys
College reignite in Blenheim.

perimeter of the court and is now one of the league’s top players. “He’s incredible and a brilliant player, he now has a completely different demeanour, he stands tall with a quiet confidence.” She says her players have so much ability, they just needed an opportunity. Heather says the league has also added immeasurable value to her life. “Just to see the skills developing and the confidence levels and self-esteem, it’s incredible.” The former nurse says her role is always an unknown journey. “One week we might go to Victory Boxing, Nelson Cricket the next, or football, it’s a real variety.” Though she will go as long as she can, Heather says it will be nice to be redundant one day. “I think it’s important to step back and let others carry it forward.” Until then though, Heather will continue offering her time to all of the “fantastic people” at the IST. “I just love it, I love to see the smiles and to see them getting so much out of it.”
Over the next few months, sports reporter Jonty Dine will be putting the spotlight on our off-field superstars. The people who work tirelessly to make sport in our region happen. They do this without trophies or medals to recognise their efforts. For more than four decades, Heather Walker has dedicated herself to sport. Starting by coaching school basketball teams in the 1980’s, Heather has gone on to help establish a sports league which caters entirely for people with disabilities. The Inclusive Sports Trust runs basketball and football leagues as well as introducing members to a range of new sports. After seeing a lack of activities for disabled people following college, Heather set out to create a consistent environment for disabled athletes. “Being a kiwi, sport is kind of engrained in us, we enjoy it when we are young and everyone should have that opportunity to keep playing.” Though there were events such
as the Special Olympics, Heather wanted more regular competition for players. “I noticed that disparity, I felt everyone needed to have that opportunity to be included.” She approached Nelson Basketball in 2006 and before long an eight-team league was established. The popularity of the league continued to grow and now boasts 20 teams and 130 players. “It has just evolved and shows there is a real need.” Heather says without the camaraderie of sport, people can quickly become isolated and depressed.

James Lowe's rugby journey from Nelson to Ireland Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
James Lowe was never going to be content with playing a solitary test or two. The Nelson-born fan favourite says he could have toiled away in Super Rugby for years and likely earnt the odd call up to the All Blacks should the incumbents be injured or rested. However, James went in search of greener pastures and could soon be playing test rugby in an Irish jersey. The 28-year-old recently penned an extension with Leinster and becomes eligible to play for Ireland in November under the three-year residency rule. The dynamic winger made the move to the Ireland’s most successful club in 2017 where he has developed cult hero status. “I had to weigh up a lot of things. I had been playing what I thought was really good Super Rugby for three
years and knocking on the door but hadn’t stormed it down.” James played six caps for the New Zealand Maori between 201417, with the All Blacks having an embarrassment of riches out wide. “You had Julian Savea in his prime, Ben Smith breaking in, Waisake Naholo, Reiko Ioane, and I’ll be missing a huge name too, I just didn’t really put my hand up enough.” The closest he got to an All Black jersey was in 2015 against Samoa, with a number of regulars on Super Rugby final duty. But shoulder surgery ruled him out. “I would’ve been absolutely stoked. It was obviously a dream of mine to play for the All Blacks but one or two tests wouldn’t have sat that well with me.” The Nelson College product opted to take his talents offshore and it was during a pre-season with the Chiefs that his contract offer from Leinster was finalised. “It was a tough decision, but you talk to people you trust, and it was just

Photo: Jonty Dine. too good of an opportunity to pass down.” He made an immediate impact in Ireland, scoring in the 40 32 Pro14 grand final win over Scarlets in his first season. James recently returned to Nelson with Leinster’s season currently in limbo. He says he has used the time to spend with his young niece and nephew, as well as catch up with old friends while playing the odd round of “not very good golf.” Looking out over the Nelson College front field, James recalls his many fond memories of starting his football career. The annual Quad Tournament looms large in his mind. “I remember vividly having the cap on, walking down the
steps in front of the whole school chanting and doing the haka behind us, then we got hammered by a Wellington College team led by Lima Sopoaga.” James has also kept a close eye on his former teams since leaving. Last weekend he watched his beloved Waimea Old Boys, but wasn’t tempted to pull on the boots. He says he still watches the Mako religiously and was filled with pride watching Tasman secure an inaugural premiership title last year. “It was an early kick off and my girlfriend was not happy with me shouting at the TV when Will Jordan scored a tinny try and I was jumping through the
roof. I was ready to get a beer out of the fridge at 5am.” Seeing Tasman play on a balmy Nelson afternoon illustrates some of the stark contrast between New Zealand and Irish rugby. “It’s a completely different world, that’s for sure. It's a very affluent sport, it’s not like New Zealand where it’s very diverse.” However, James says he loves being part of Leinster. “Dublin is an amazing city and if they want me to stick around, I don’t see why I’d be going anywhere.” James says, while he has plenty of unfinished business in Ireland, he is hopeful of a homecoming at the end of his career. "Nelson will always be home."
