spend on the project. The companies have a vision to achieve the first world’s first unmanned flight certification which would allow it to operate commercially.
Nelson’s travel agents are asking for more help to see through the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic as they fear their industry has been forgotten about. While other associated industries, like regional tourism and international schools, have been given Government packages, those in the local travel industry say they have been left behind. Some have even resorted to working processing fish or taking up cleaning jobs to get by. “We are dying a slow and painful death, and no one wants to hear or tell our story,” says Tracey Lynch of Hello World Nelson. She says many travel shops have closed, agents have been made redundant and are on the brink of being without a job – especially when the Covid wage subsidy runs out next week. “No business can keep their doors open without an income and only giving money back – all the money we have earned in the last 12 months.” Agents are obligated to look after their customers, even if they are no longer being paid, as they are paid on commission at the time of sale from airlines or suppliers. “We are working our butts off to get refunds back and have nothing to sell, so no income at all since mid-March.” She says the whole industry is in limbo as to what happens next. Manager of World Travellers, Alex Chisnall, managed to get out of her lease of her Trafalgar St location, “hibernated” her business and is now working from home.

She had take a job on the hoki line at Sealord to help get her children through university but says it has also given her the headspace to think about what is next for her business. “It has given me time to think,” she says. However, the uncertainty has taken its toll. “We still have to pay staff and have all these bills coming out, but we are extremely committed to our clients.” She hoped talk of a Pacific or Australia bubble might have eventuated but there is nothing on the horizon. “It’s such a tricky situation because we have to protect our people, but we have to protect some livelihoods as well.” Alex says there have been
meetings and petitions with ministers which she was hopeful might turn into something tangible. Owner of House of Travel Nelson, Jason McKay, says that he is optimistic despite the current situation. “A lot of our customers we are chatting to and they are still asking when they can travel. It’s a bit disappointing what’s happening in Australia as we had hoped for that bubble but it seems further away now.” He says the Pacific Islands are likely the first place that Kiwis will be allowed to travel to. “A lot of our customers have credits to use. So, they need to fly somewhere and do something fun with those credits. We are confident people will come back to us … We can only hope there is something around the corner.”

Nelson to be centre of unmanned flight FROM PAGE 1 “It’s a big game changer,” says John Chisolm of Hawke Eye. “It will attract people from all over the world to see it, so it will be good for Nelson.” John, who lives in the Nelson region, has had a long career in logistics and freight aircraft – including starting Texel Air in Bahrain several years ago. He was approached by Matt George of Merlin Labs, trading as Apollo Aviation, to develop the concept of bringing that company’s IP to New Zealand. Merlin Labs, based in Boston, has had backing from several venture capital companies in its seed round, including backers of ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft. The company uses technology including artificial intelligence, machine-learning, and systems similar to those used in driverless cars. The aircraft differ from drones, which are operated by a pilot. Speaking from the United States, Matt said the company already had competed successful test flights in the Mojave Desert in California. In the Nelson project, the idea is to put that technology into existing aircraft, such as Cessna Caravans, to start unmanned freight flights between Nelson, the West Coast and Canterbury. That project will take place over at least two years, carrying an

John says that it is all in service of reinventing the flight industry to save costs on freight. “A critical differentiator of Apollo’s system is the use of existing affordable aircraft that are already certified and approved for operation without the need for complex aircraft development.” Matt says the company elected to centre the company’s civil certification programme in New Zealand because of the country’s supportive regulatory and business environment. He also says the Civil Aviation Authority has a “progressive approach” to go along with the country’s relatively uncluttered airspace. In Boston, Apollo employs
a team of highly qualified professionals in several fields including artificial intelligence and machine learning scientists, test pilots, flight test engineers, data analysts, aircraft maintenance, repair and modification and avionics. Matt says most of these skills will be replicated in New Zealand, requiring significant employment of skilled personnel, and Apollo will be making a substantial investment in the New Zealand operation. Apollo has also approached New Zealand universities and research agencies to identify collaborative research opportunities. Apollo expects to begin initial survey flights within the next three months.

‘Basic’ repairs only for Stoke Hall Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Stoke’s earthquake-prone memorial hall was the hot topic at Nelson City Council last week, with a lengthy debate on how to move forward with repairs.
At a meeting on Thursday, the community services committee approved a recommendation to commence design for seismic strengthening to bring the building to 67 per cent of the new building standard (NBS). A total of $1.2m has been allocated for the work in 2020/21 - with $500k
GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House Too Many Hands
Throughout the 1840s, the New Zealand Company continued to send labourers to the Nelson settlement despite a lack of jobs. At first, many were employed by the Company to build roads and clear swamps.
But by late 1844, funds ran out and the labourers were sacked and left to their own devices. Some landowners came to the rescue, employing as many as they could, but it meant ‘hard times’ for local labourers.

of this potentially coming from the Provincial Growth Fund for town and memorial halls. Parks and facilities asset planner, Jane Loughnan, told councillors that if their application is successful, they would need to move “at pace” and begin physical construction within six months. “If we’re unsuccessful, I’m proposing that we carry out the design work as we had originally planned for in this financial year, with the strengthening and other work to be programmed through the long-term plan.” The hall, built in the early 1950s, has been closed since late March after it was deemed an earthquake risk, affecting 10 regular groups and users. It was assessed in 2014 as being 24 per cent of the NBS, however, it is now determined likely as having a 17 per cent rating. The work proposed includes the seismic strengthening as well as roof painting, basic leak fixes, window maintenance and minor repairs, painting the exterior/interior walls and ceiling, rewiring, a new switch board, toilet upgrade and asbestos removal/ management.

The Stoke Memorial Hall was closed at the end of March due to its earthquake-prone rating. Photo: File. Council has also requested officers to provide additional information for hall improvements, due to some unease around the table regarding if they should be “going all the way” with the upgrade. Cr Pete Rainey suggested incorporating an acoustic treatment and removing the stage to increase usage, while Cr Kate Fulton questioned why energy efficiency measures weren’t included in the proposal, such as insulation, heating and ventilation.

“I guess I’m concerned we are doing some basic work and not going all the way … should be we raising the bar?” But Jane said these would be cost prohibitive and they are “just looking at doing the basics”. “In our network of halls this is our basic community hall type and if people required additional facilities the Greenmeadows centre is just up the road.” The recommendation will go to a full council meeting on 13 August.

Life of former mayor honoured Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Reporter

The main road through Saxton Field could soon be renamed after former Tasman and Nelson mayor Kerry Marshall. The mayors of Nelson and Tasman, Rachel Reese and Tim King, and Nelson MP Nick Smith have proposed that the road be named “Kerry Marshall Drive”, to honour a man who devoted his life to public service and died in March this year during the Covid-19 lockdown. More than a hundred mourners turned out to celebrate a memorial to Kerry at Nelson College on Friday. Rachel spoke of Kerry’s passion for Nelson, his legacy that is Saxton Field, and his love of fine wine. Shew acknowledged that many people made huge contributions to the Saxton Field sporting complex. “There were dozens of meetings through the 1990s and 2000s where Kerry, as mayor, led major decisions

area. “We liked the phrase ‘Kerry Marshall Drive’ as Kerry was so driven in his life’s work to improve our region.” Nelson MP Nick Smith also gave his full backing to the proposal. “We have jointly written to the Saxton Field committee proposing the name change and recommending they undertake a process of public and iwi consultation. Our hope would be that the community supports this proposal for a lasting memorial for Kerry’s contribution to our region and New Zealand.” The Marshall family say they are delighted with the proposal to rename the road. “Kerry put decades of work into developing these sports facilities. He loved parks and, especially during the last few years, enjoyed many wheelchair visits and picnics in Saxton Field. The complex is also symbolic of Kerry’s long passion to connect the Nelson and Tasman communities,” said Colleen Marshall.

Rachel Boyack for Nelson
Our Government’s swift response to get COVID-19 under control and protect jobs means New Zealand is doing better than most. The Government recently announced a $53.3 million package for projects in the Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman regions that will help boost the local economy and create jobs. This package includes $9.8 million for Port Nelson Ltd and Aimex Service Group to replace an old marine slipway and ensure the region’s fishing, aquaculture and marine engineering industries will be preserved for years to come. I was pleased to have successfully advocated for overseas vessels to be allowed to come into Port Nelson for repair work at Aimex. As your MP, I’ll back Kiwi businesses with practical support to get projects moving, create jobs and support our community.

Refinery finds home on Hardy Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
What was previously a shop full of bikes has now been transformed into a central hub for Nelson’s art community. The Refinery ArtSpace has taken up residence in the building at 114 Hardy St for the next two years, after being vacated from their earthquake-prone Halifax St site in March. “We’re excited to be at this end of town,” says manager Janja Heathfield. “It’s taken a very large team and a lot of volunteer hours.” She says it was a “pretty tricky task” to find a site that could replicate what they had on Halifax St, and while they have lost five artist studios, they have gained more gallery space and a flexible workshop/rehearsal space. “We also have two office spaces that we’ll be sharing with other art organisations. It’s a very versatile building.” Janja says earthquake strengthening at their old site is not anticipated to happen until the second half of next year, and they are thankful to Nelson City Council for helping

Jimmy marks 83 years of remarkable life Kate Russell If you’re a regular visitor to Nelson’s city centre, you’ve probably encountered James ‘Jimmy’ Alley and one of his famous drawings. While being born deaf and experiencing a life of residential care, the much-loved friend marked his 83rd birthday on Friday. Born in Wellington, Jimmy was placed in Braemar at the age
of two after his mother died. This was followed by time in Ngawhatu. “Various people worked hard with him over the years to get him out into the community,” says his residential carer, Craig Barton. “I know he was often, in his younger days, helping feed the young children in Braemar something he lights up and feels so proud about.” Faye Wulff from Community Art
Works Nelson says Jimmy has been attending sessions with her once a week “without fail” for over 20 years. She reckons most shops in town would recognise him from coming in and giving them one of his drawings. “You see them all over town everybody’s got a drawing of Jim’s.” He has also enjoyed a small amount of notoriety with one of his pictures being publicly

displayed on the Westpac building this year. “His drawings are like a language - they tell me what’s going on in his world,” says Faye. “I remember one year he spent the whole year drawing the swans on the river because he really liked them, and he often draws the food carts. “We’ve just worked with him for so long - he’s like a best friend. He’s what makes me keep Community Art Works going.
He’s very loved.” Craig says that in the last 18 months Jimmy’s mobility has decreased, but it doesn’t stop him from living his life to the fullest. He enjoys going to All Saints Church, snooker and the flea market on Sundays. “I think he is deserving of some recognition for the strength and resilience he has shown over his life. I don’t know many people that last that long in this kind of care.”

Cheaper buses as new zone system is introduced Staff Reporter Many bus passengers in our region are now seeing cheaper bus fares due to changes to the public transport zone system, with some people saving up to $1.20 per journey. Previously, bus fares in Nelson-Tasman were based on a four-zone system. Zone one ended at Boundary Road in Bishopdale, zone two ended at Quarantine Road in Stoke, zone three ended at Saxton Road in Stoke and zone four covered Richmond. Infrastructure chair, councillor Brian McGurk, says simplifying the zone system and making fares cheaper is a core part of Council’s strategy to encourage a more sustainable transport culture in Nelson. “The new zones will make bus travel cheaper for many people, especially those coming into Nelson from Richmond to work. Coupled with the new Bee Card, public transport in Nelson will be easier to access for everyone and we hope more people will take advantage of the great public transport system we have here.” The new zoning system extends zone one all the way to Hayes Corner where Main Road Stoke meets Waimea Road and Annesbrook Drive, zone two to Main Road Stoke just north of Elm Street, and zone three to Richmond including the

This means that passengers can travel from Atawhai to Hayes Corner for just $2 with a Bee Card (or $2.50 if you pay cash), a trip that would previously have cost $3. Passengers going from Richmond to Nelson using a Bee Card will pay $2.80 (or $3.50 if you pay cash), instead of $4 under the old zoning system. All feeder loops like the Stoke loop are now considered part of the zone they

‘Incredible’ response for Big Brothers Big Sisters Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Big Brothers Big Sister’s call for new mentors has been answered. Nelson-Tasman programme director Chelsea Routhan says since the article was recently published in the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly, they have had 27 enquiries. “It’s incredible. I’ve never had a response like that before.”

“
The organisation, which helps young people needing extra support from a caring adult, was in dire need of new mentors, with 55 children on
their waiting list. Chelsea says about half the new enquiries have been from males. “It’s a good ratio as we have a lot of young boys on our list, aged from six to 12 years.” An information session for those interested was held last week, with current long-time mentor, Tim Cross, giving his insight into his experience. “From that session people can officially apply,” says Chelsea. Just one hour per week is required from mentors, where pairs can kick a ball around, play games or go for a walk on the beach. “We are very grateful to the community for the response. If anyone wants to find out more, we’d love to hear from them.” For more information about the charity and how to get involved, email nelson@bbbs.nz, phone 545 9864 or check out their website at bigbrothersbigsistersnelson.org.nz Chelsea says that the programme can really make a difference in a young person's life.

It breaches the Bill of Rights including freedom of expression and freedom of association. It gives party leaders too much power. I have as an MP voted against my party and crossed the floor. This law makes this much harder. This type of electoral law only exists in authoritarian states like Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Venezuela. Yes, because it's not the first time that they've fished in that area. It will be a deterrent to other fishermen not to go near the area again. Yvonne Canares As a wise man once said, ‘if you can't be good, be good at it’. Ben Weller
ACT’s Nelson candidate standing on ‘principals’: I supported TOP in 2017 but as they lean further and further to the left, I'm probably going to vote ACT this time. Sergey Ratakhin
A vote for ACT is a vote for National. Would they have supported you as well as this government? “There needs to be a climate change policy, but it needs to be sensible policy that incorporates evidence.” People asking for more evidence are just not properly informed. We are overloaded with evidence. If you're concerned about the harm cannabis does then that's the reason to support the bill. Its whole purpose is to reduce harm by restricting and regulating supply and providing educational and health services for those in need. Refer to Chlöe Swarbrick for in depth information on this. I bet they deeply regret getting caught more. Tra-
Nelson Matters The most important responsibility of an MP is to represent the people and their community. Sometimes this means disagreeing with one’s party or leader. That is why I have so vigorously opposed the Winston Peters electoral law changes that gives the power to a leader to dismiss an MP. I am delighted that Parliament voted to repeal this draconian law last week, in a rare defeat for the Government. The Waka Hopping law came about when Winston Peters demanded it was the price for Labour and the Greens to form a government in 2017. Mr. Peters wants absolute power over his MPs and has no tolerance for

in 2018. Founding Greens CoLeader, the late Jeanette Fitzsimons vigorously opposed it at Select Committee. The late Rod Donald described similar laws as “the most draconian, obnoxious, anti-democratic and insulting piece of legislation ever inflicted on Parliament.” It is to the credit of the Greens that they switched their vote last week and supported the law’s abolition. New Zealand has one of the oldest and best democracies in the world. The pressures from Covid-19 on the economy and basic freedoms will test it. We are also facing huge changes in our media. This is a time we must jealously guard our democratic
traditions. The Bill repealing Winston’s obnoxious law passed its first reading by 64-55 with the support of National, Greens and Act. Public submissions have been called by the Justice Select Committee this week. The Bill’s sponsor, former Speaker David Carter is retiring so he has transferred the Bill to me. A priority, if I am re-elected, is to get this repeal Bill passed. MPs should not be answerable to their party leaders or bosses, but to the people who elect them.

Stamp collecting expert to deliver
Charles Anderson

Ross Newman is realistic about trying to get young people into stamp collecting. “Most wouldn’t have even licked a stamp, let alone posted a letter,” he says. “These days there is a lot of competition for attention with social media and Xbox and Fortnite and all that.” But that is not stopping him having ambition. The Nelson Philatelic Society is on the lookout for young people to bolster their ranks of about
40 people and Ross thinks stamps might have more to offer than meets the eye. “Some of us started doing this when we were kids and we have come back to it. We have tended to stop collecting things these days.” When Ross was young, he says most people had a stamp collection. He collected through to his 20s and then gave it up. He came back to it three years ago when he was thinking about throwing out his collection. “I really like the stories behind them so I thought I would give it another go.”
More than $500 was raised at a Pink Ribbon Breakfast last weekend in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer. “And to raise the fact that it’s not just women who get diagnosed with breast cancer but men too,” says local pharmacist and event organiser Hardik Ahuja. “I thought I could make people aware, what precautions they can take, how they can maintain a balanced diet.” Local companies donated products to be raffled. Fellow organiser Raina Bawa says it was a great success with $550 raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Photo: Supplied.
To that end he hopes that a visit by one of the world’s foremost experts to Nelson on Sunday might pique some interest. Len Jury is a longestablished dealer and the author of the New Zealand Stamp Catalogue. He is also an International Philatelist with award winning exhibits shown in New Zealand, Australia, England, United States, Canada, Germany and South East Asia. Len is speaking at the Nelson Philatelic Society on Sunday, August 9 at the Stoke Primary School Hall at 2pm.

Students aim to raise $50,000 for mental health Matt McCrorie A group of Nelson College students are working together to destigmatise youth suicide while aiming to raise $50,000 to go towards the Key to Life Charitable Trust. Each year students from Nelson College organise a fundraising event for a charity of choice. In the past the students have donated to the Cancer Society, Red Cross, and the Fifeshire Foundation. This year, the students want to tackle mental health and raise awareness for youth suicide. “We thought Key to Life was really relevant this year,” says head boy Liam Brennan. Started by New Zealand comedian Mike King, the Key to Life Charitable Trust is a community peer support group, aiming to change the way New Zealanders think, act and feel about mental health and suicide. The students on the organising committee for the charity auction say that mental health is one of the key issues that they know young people are facing. “It is something that everyone is affected by,” says year 13 student Tom Murray. “There are boys out there, in our student body, who are at risk.” The students will be approaching local

businesses to support the auction, by buying a table and donating items to be auctioned off on the night. Comedian and mental health advocate Mike King will be the guest of honour on the night. Locals Steve Page and Kevin Cross will host the event, and aim to have 20 items of significance to auction off. One of the student organisers, Stan PagePage-Bates, says that he took lessons learnt from organising a fundraising quiz night last year. “I took that, and I saw areas that could be improved on. For example, using the network that comes with Nelson College, the old boy’s network, and parents of boys who are business owners,” Stan says. “I thought we could utilise that in a way that would be beneficial not only to the school but to charity, too.” Liam says that it is important for the fundraising to be student-led. “The boys can relate a lot more to us. The boys are a lot more willing to get behind something like this if it’s us students doing it – they’re part of a team. When the staff are doing it, it can be really easy to feel alienated,” Liam says. The boys have set themselves an ambitious target – they want to raise $50,000 to donate to the trust. “I want this auction to be the biggest fundraiser this school has ever had,” says Stan. Principal Richard Dykes says that he is thrilled with the way the students have championed that cause. “This is a fantastic leadership opportunity for the students, and they really are just going for it.” The charity auction will be on Thursday, 24 September starting at 7pm. Tables of 10 will be priced at $800, while single tickets will be $80. Anyone who wants to donate goods or services can contact sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz or Steve on 027 544 9448

Government funding for Saxton Creek Upgrade Project Funding of $7.5 million has been granted to the Saxton Creek Upgrade Project in Stoke to allow critical flood mitigation works to continue at pace, creating employment for the region. The funding was announced by the Government on 24 July as part of a $53.3 million funding package for the top of the South Island, comprised of a combination of loans and investments from the Provincial Growth Fund and the Infrastructure Reference Group’s (IRG) shovel ready projects. In 2013, during an extreme weather event, there was severe flooding to residential houses along Saxton Creek, as well as to commercial and industrial properties in the Wakatu Industrial Estate. A number of properties experienced up to half a metre of water going through their premises. The Saxton Creek Upgrade Project aims to protect the residential, commercial and industrial properties along the Creek for a 1 in 100 year event. It will also look to mitigate flooding of Main Road Stoke (a main access road) and increase capacity of the culverts between Main Road Stoke and Whakatu Drive. Mayor Rachel Reese says the funding will allow Council to press ahead with essential upgrades while offering employment to the region. “The flooding was devastating for the businesses and residents of this area and this project offers them some security and allows them to plan for a future without having to worry about the next time we have an extreme weather event.”

Cheaper bus travel for Nelson-Tasman as new zone system is introduced Many bus passengers in our region are now benefitting from cheaper bus fares due to changes to the public transport zone system, with some people saving up to $1.20 per journey. The new zoning system extends Zone One all the way to Hayes Corner where Main Road Stoke meets Waimea Road and Annesbrook Drive , Zone Two to Main Road Stoke just north of Elm Street, and Zone Three to Richmond including the Richmond loop services. All feeder loops like the Stoke Loop are now considered part of the zone they sit within and there is one hour to transfer between services without incurring an extra fare. Fare categories have also been simplified. One concessionary fare now applies to children (5-18), students, and holders of Super Gold and Community Services cards. Children under five travel free and off peak Super Gold travel will still be free when using a Bee Card. Infrastructure Chair Councillor Brian McGurk says
simplifying the zone system and making fares cheaper is a core part of Council’s strategy to encourage a more sustainable transport culture in Nelson. “The new zones will make bus travel cheaper for many people, especially those coming into Nelson from Richmond to work. Coupled with the new Bee Card, public transport in Nelson will be easier to access for everyone and we hope more people will take advantage of the great public transport system we have here.” Bee Card, the Nelson-Tasman region’s new electronic bus card, launched on 3 August. Cards are available now at BeeCard.co.nz or our Bee Card retail outlets: Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council customer service centres, public libraries in Nelson, Stoke and Richmond and the bus depot on Bridge Street. For more information about Bee Card, how to register an account and load up money go to: nelson.govt.nz/beecard-faqs
Protect Nelson’s waterways – tell us about wastewater overflows in your community Periods of heavy rainfall can result in wastewater overflows from drains on streets or private properties. This can result in wastewater getting into our waterways, which has a detrimental effect on our ecosystems. In some situations, overflows can result in popular swimming spots being closed off. There are two ways you can help your community and Nelson’s environment. First read our FAQ on the Our Nelson website and then check the drains at your own home – there may be cheap fixes that you can carry out, which will

Development Contributions Policy review Council’s Development Contributions Policy is up for review and Council is seeking feedback from both developers and the wider public, on how to make the policy as fair and easy to understand and apply, as possible. Group Manager Environmental Management Clare Barton said Nelson was growing rapidly, and growth-related infrastructure comes at a cost. “The contributions policy helps ensure those developing properties pay their share toward the extra costs that comes with the increase in demand.” Since the policy’s 2018 review, Council has identified three potential areas requiring review; the reserves development contributions, the overall complexity of the policy and the policy exemptions. Council would also like to hear the community’s views on what should be changed, Ms Barton says. The amount of development contribution required for a project is calculated depending on the value and size of the land, as well as the type of development and its service connection requirements. The types of developments that are assessed for development contributions include new subdivisions, new house builds, new office and retail spaces, commercial buildings, new apartments in existing buildings and additions to existing buildings. Council’s current development contribution policy is available on the Nelson City Council website, and includes a development contributions calculator for simple residential developments. The survey opens on Shape Nelson on 5 August 2020, and closes on 2 September 2020.

New lighting for the Taurapa The Taurapa was lit up for the first time on 17 July, with a light display held to celebrate Matariki. The display was a collaboration between Taurapa artist Maia Hegglun, who has been working with local school children to create images based on the theme of migration to Whakatū, and artist Klaasz Breukel, who took those images and combined them with others to make a light art display. The Taurapa will remain lit with blue lights in recognition of Matariki and as a thank-you to our essential workers during the COVID-19 shutdown for a month. The lights will then change colour over the course of the year to represent other kaupapa/ anniversaries and seasons.

Whether you are buying or selling a property, your lawyer or conveyancing practitioner can help you understand the process and will know what checks to make. There are questions which need to be asked, such as: Are there any problems with the title? Are there any issues with the building? (You will need to get a builder’s or engineer’s report). Have all the council building requirements been met? (You will need a LIM report). Your lawyer can also help you understand your obligations in relation to the term of your loan, the interest rate and so on. You can download the full ‘Buying and Selling Property’ guide at www. nzlawsociety.org.nz. A property deal is never just a simple buy-sell transaction. It is a complex web of relationships involving banks, mortgage brokers, insurers, estate agents, local authorities – each have their own special requirements before the property transaction can be concluded. Fringe Festival gearing up New Suter members hold The Bay Landscapes Nelson Fringe Festival is riding high on a wave of enthusiasm for the first large local event after Covid-19 lockdown. The week-long festival sees performers – both local and from around the country – descend on the city and bring it to life in the depths of winter. Director Laura Irish says the response has been “amazing”. There are 31 shows over the week of August 14-22 along with several workshops.
Laura says there is something for everyone – from comedy improv, family-friendly theatre, dramatic performances and everything in between. She says while they are grateful for the support the festival has received, she is imploring Nelsonians to get behind it. “The only way Nelson gets to enjoy these sorts of events is if people come out and support them." Details of the shows can be found in the wraparound of this week’s Nelson Weekly and at www.nelsonfringe.co.nz
first 'diverse' exhibition Kate Russell Five new and very diverse members of the Nelson Suter Art Society have banded together for their first exhibition. “I don’t think it’s often you’d ever find an exhibition of five completely different types of art thrown together,” says member and marine artist, Paul Deacon. “This is our first opportunity as newbies to put our work out for everybody to see.” ‘Five Artists Four Walls’ kicks off at the Suter’s McKee Gallery on 10 August, with work ranging from marine art, landscape pastels and photography to unique finecrafted wood displays. “The wonderful thing about the exhibition is the diversity,” says Debra Cole, who will be showing her series of black and white photos. “Each of us have a very different modality that we use. We’re quite a mixed group of artists

The majority of them have only been members of the 130-yearold society since the beginning

Debra says one of the “wonderful” things about the society is it gives individuals without a background in art an opportunity to apply as artist members. “It gives us a chance to exhibit, which is wonderful.” ‘Five Artists Four Walls’ runs from 10 - 30 August at the Suter’s McKee Gallery.

Waimea women’s dominant run to final Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Waimea Old Boys senior women’s side has been untouchable in 2020. After winning its first Tasman Trophy in six years last season, you would be brave to bet against them defending it on Saturday. Waimea has been rampant this season, amassing 300 points in just five games and conceding only 15. The side booked back-to-back finals at the weekend with another dominant display, dispatching Moutere 41-0 at Jubilee Park. The semi-final was in stark contrast to last year’s final, where Waimea held off a spirited Moutere side 27-17. In the other semi-final,
Wanderers beat Riwaka 47-7 to set up this weekend’s final at Jubilee Park. The match also served as a 100th appearance for the club for Penny Stickney while Anna Bradley and Stacey Davis brought up their centuries in 2019. All three women were rewarded with a club blazer at a ceremony last week. Prop Anna Bradley, who joined the club in 2006, says it was fantastic for the club to celebrate the milestones. Anna says the culture within the team is a driving factor of its success. “We have a lot of older leaders teaching the younger ones.” Waimea boasted no less than 13 Mako in the Farah Palmer Cup last year and will no doubt be heavily featured when the
squad is announced later this week. “We have quite a few players in the high-performance programme which has been really helpful with gym work and extra training.” She says they have also been brilliantly supported by both the men’s A and B teams. The side have suffered a slight setback for Saturday with skipper Jess Foster Lawrence out of the final with a broken leg. However, Anna says they still possess the quality to win consecutive titles. “That’s the plan.”
The water temperatures have dropped to a chilly 11 degrees in the bay but there is still plenty of life to be found. Huge swarms of squat lobsters – krill like creatures - attract thousands of birds and there are dozens of seals around. When it comes to fish the usual suspects for this time of the year are present. Over sandy/muddy ground you will find gurnard, the odd school of kahawai and unfortunately - legions of spiny dogfish. Blue cod and tarakihi don’t care about the cold water either, but they prefer rocky bottom. The snapper and kingfish still hang out around d’Urville Island which is always worth a trip – if you can find a calm day or two. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club was finally able to hold its traditional end-of-year prize
giving, a month late but as great as ever. The Club Members enjoyed the excellent food, had a few cold ones and used the opportunity to catch up with fellow fisherpeople. Thanks to our most generous sponsors (especially Hunting & Fishing Nelson, thanks Andrew!) we were once more able to hand out thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Even if you hadn’t caught a trophy fish last season you could still win some of the amazing spot prizes. Overall winner of the 2019/2020 season was – as usual – Reid Forrest, Sharon Rose won the ladies’ section and Ollie Meek the junior’s. The Dawnbreakers AGM was held on the same evening and Phil Chilton was re-elected as president. The committee is already making plans for the next season and we are looking forward to another exciting fishing year! Tight lines!

Unbeaten run ends for Nelson College Jonty Dine
Nelson College’s two-year unbeaten run at home came to an end on Saturday afternoon at the hands of a ruthlessly efficient Christchurch Boys side 2513. The visitors scored four tries to two as Christchurch handed Nelson its first defeat at home since losing
the Moascar Cup in 2018. Nelson were starved of territory and turned over a wealth of possession which Christchurch capitalised on. Dejected captain Daniel Dixon was gutted to have suffered just his second loss on the front field in three years. “That’s tough, we are coming into the business end of the season and coming up against some good teams who are just punishing us for our own mistakes.” The Nelson skipper says turnovers and too many penalties cost them dearly. “We have dropped two games now and we can’t afford to drop anymore if we want to finish in that top four.” The side now faces a ten-day turnaround before they play Shirley Boys on Tuesday August 11. Nelson sits second on the UC Championship table thanks to a superior points differential. "We will come back refreshed and hopefully bounce back," says Daniel. Meanwhile, it was a bruising and brutal battle at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, but Waimea emerged from the war with Nelson victorious and with the coveted Noel Barton Trophy. Down 25-10 at halftime, Nelson showed plenty of character to fight back in the second and out-score last year’s Tasman Trophy finalists four tries to three. However, it was the deadly accurate boot of Campbell Parata who scored 16 points which ultimately proved the difference in

A bloodied Waimea skipper Ben Eder says it was a gutsy effort from his men. “It was always going to be a fight, it was always going to be tough, but we are just stoked to get it done.” He says the culture in the team is one of self-belief and hard work. “We are willing to work for everyone, it was a team effort.” Ben says while Campbell’s contributions off the tee were crucial, he brings so much more to his role at first five. “He directs us around the park, makes his tackles, he really is an outstanding player.” Ben says they are still right in the hunt to win the Nelson competition.
“We have dropped a couple, but we believe we should be there at the end and, in finals footy, you never know what can happen.” At Greenmeadows, Marist enjoyed a 5431 over Stoke to go within two points of competition leaders Kahurangi with two rounds to play.

Nelson Suburbs were too good for Christchurch United at Saxton on Sunday, cruising to a 2-0 victory. After the scoreless draw in Christchurch last week, Suburbs returned home in style to move to third on the
Mainland Premier League table. Suburbs made it back-to-back wins at home for the first time this season when overcoming United, with the win seeing Suburbs become the first club to reach the milestone of 650 MPL points. Suburbs scored after just eight minutes from a corner, when a shot from Jordan Yong was
fiercely competitive with just one goal separating the two sides. Jacks showed plenty of composure to close out the 35-34 result and maintain its unbeaten run in the NBS Premier Nelson Netball competition. It was also onegoal separating the sides on court two, Nelson College for Girls picked up its first win of the season, leapfrogging RichmondF45 into fourth place with a 41-40 win. In the evening’s later game, Stoke NBS eased passed Motueka High School 51-41 to relegate the girls from Golden Bay to Senior One. Replacing them will be Prices Pango who defeated Waimea Senior A's on Saturday to earn promotion, with Jacks taking out round one of competition.

Guiding young superstars through the game Over the next few months, sports reporter Jonty Dine is be putting the spotlight on our off-field superstars. These people work tirelessly to make sport in our region happen - without trophies or medals to recognise their efforts. Chris Shand’s Saturday’s have had a familiar look over the past 20 winters. While most of us were enjoying a weekend sleep-in, Chris and his son were setting up the fields at Greenmeadows with the frost on the grass yet to melt. From there, he would arrange food for the after match, coach up to two junior teams before watching the seniors play, packing up the ground and feeding the players. Chris has worn almost every hat available within the Stoke Club. He has coached every grade from U6’s to U21’s, has been on the committee for 20 years, the junior club captain for 10 and president for 3 years. Chris joined the club in the late 1990s after being taken along to Greenmeadows to watch a game and he has been a regular fixture ever since. The incomparable passion he shows for the game is driven by
seeing kids succeed in the sport. Chris has helped shape the careers of current Super Rugby stars including Quinten Strange, Tom and James Marshall, Ethan Blackadder, Mitch Drummond and Mitch Hunt during his 22 years coaching the Nelson under 52kg Seddon Shield side. His tireless efforts are driven by his desire to see young players grow. “My big driver is seeing the development of kids - kids in sport stay out of court.” His influence is not forgotten by players. “When you walk down the street and have a kid you coached 10 years ago come up and start talking to you, that’s always a highlight.” He says his coaching philosophy

has always been enjoyment is the key. “We want them to learn and develop, but they have to enjoy it.” Out of all the players to have gone onto higher honours, when asked who showed the most potential as a junior, Chris didn’t hesitate. “Drummy.” He says during a Seddon Shield trip to Greymouth, Mitch Drummond demonstrated his commitment to the game. “The kids were all running around and playing pool but Drummy was just focussed on the Ranfurly Shield game on TV, oblivious about everything else, that summed him up.” Illustrating his longevity was a recent run-in with a former mentee. “I was helping out with an U8 side and one of the parents came up and told me I coached him too, I thought then I might be getting a bit old for this,” he jokes.
Chris Shand at his beloved Greenmeadows rugby ground Photo: Jonty Dine. Another highlight on Chris’ calendar is the annual Mike’s Sevens tournament, held at Greenmeadows. Starting in 1996 with 20 underseven teams, it has evolved right through to under 10s, with players coming from all over New Zealand for the prestigious tournament. To help accommodate the influx of 2000 players and parents, Chris arrives at the ground before 6am and won’t leave till after 5pm.
“It’s a huge day, but it’s great and still very competitive, you see sixyear-old’s out there as if they are playing for their life.” Of course, this kind of dedication would not be possible if not for his “incredibly supportive wife”. “I am very lucky to have her.” Chris says the friendships he has made with everyone associated with the game will keep him coming back. “As long as I can, I’ll be here. Stoke is part of my life.”
