Students vaping on the up Kate Russell Nelson secondary school principals have welcomed the Government’s new vaping law, saying it’s a “step in the right direction” to help counteract what is a worryingly growing
trend for local teens. The Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Vaping Amendment Bill was passed on 5 August and will come into effect this November. It will see a ban on the sale of vaping products to those under
the age of 18. It will also prohibit advertising and limit the sale of all flavours to specialist stores, with shops like dairies, supermarkets and petrol stations restricted to mint, menthol and tobacco. Nayland College principal Daniel
Wilson welcomes the changes, saying he has taken a “very hard line” against anyone vaping on school grounds. “Several students have been stood down from school for vaping this year. The incidents I am aware of have been across all year levels,
which is a concern.” He says they have seen a rise from virtually no instances of vaping a couple of years ago to seeing it as a growing concern over the past 18 months.

Benjamin on a roll at 7 Charles Anderson A multicoloured glint flashes from across the asphalt courts at Enner Glynn School. Benjamin Murphy, 7, has just finished up for the day and rolls towards the van that is waiting for him on the other side of the school. He propels himself up the van's ramp and into the back, helped by a carer. “See ya Ben,” another student says. Ben smiles and waves out the window. “See ya.” It is part of a regular daily routine that has been years in the making. This afternoon he will have a snack before heading off to physio and exercise. “I hope it’s boxing,” he says. Benjamin was just two-years-old when he ran onto Main Road Stoke and was hit by a car after an appointment at Stoke Medical Centre.
He was flown to Christchurch Hospital and treated for brain bruising, concussion, a fractured jaw, liver laceration, lung contusion and broken femur. But it took six weeks for doctors to realise that Benjamin also had serious spinal injuries. Those days feel distant, his dad Simon says. They have come a long way. These days Benjamin enjoys video games. Currently his favourite is “Titanfall 2” where players control ‘Titans’, or giant mechanical exoskeletons in their mission to save mankind. It’s set at a nondescript time in the future. “Benjamin is doing really well,” Simon says. “He blends in with other children and at that age they are really accepting, so he has quite a happy social life.”

Benjamin keeps rolling at seven-years-old FROM PAGE 1 Simon says even when he was young and in hospital, Benjamin still had a positive outlook on life. “He wanted to focus on the here and now.” But he is getting to the age where questioning is natural. He asks why he can’t do exercises like other kids, why he can’t run like other kids. “He has had those low moments.” Benjamin doesn’t remember the accident, but he knows his story. He doesn’t see it as a personal tragedy, he just knows the facts as they happened. The spinal cord needs to be healthy and his got hurt badly. He now doesn’t have any feeling below his armpits, but that does mean he is able to wheel himself around. The family knew that when he got his first wheelchair that he would want to put his
stamp on it. Hence the rainbow wheels. Simon says it’s difficult to bring his perspective to Ben’s situation. “It’s me also being in this position for the first time. I say there is always a future. There are things that can happen that can improve
after the accident everything was totally focused on Ben, so everything was put on pause. But with the help of carers, teacher aides and friends and family they have had time to breathe, which they are incredibly thankful for. “But we have got to a routine
“With time that sensation has diminished in its intensity but there is still an anxiety around it.” the way we move our bodies and it doesn’t mean that you have to give up thinking about things that you want to do, but you do have to focus on the here and now. Translating that to a 7-yearold is a challenge.” For the Murphy family, life has changed too. For three years
now that we are able to reflect on family life and have time for other things.” Some things are still raw for Simon. Like when he drives past Stoke Medical Centre, or sees children playing by the side of the road. “With time that sensation has diminished in its intensity but
there is still an anxiety around it.” Simon says he would really like Benjamin to connect with other people with similar injuries and at a similar age. “I would like to see him having some sort of social interaction with people who are going through the same thing. Even older children who might be able to help him.” But more than anything, Simon wants Benjamin to find that balance between acceptance and hope that one day he may walk again. “It’s that balancing act in accepting the here and now but also that you might have the opportunity in the future, and medical technology is developing all the time. “Acceptance can bring a sense of peace and hope. But don’t let go. There is a future and you have a lot of growing up to do.” Benjamin may yet be a titan.

FROM PAGE 1 “Personally, I believe that the risks of vaping, although widely reported to be less than traditional smoking, are still not fully understood. We welcome any move to restrict these products and particularly the flavours and advertising clearly targeted at young people.” Nelson College headmaster Richard Dykes also supports the new regulations but says there is still work to do. “It’s a step in the right direction - it mainly closes the gap and has certainly placed logical restrictions, but it doesn’t go as far as I’d have liked.” He says they are working with multiple students who are vaping, with some reaching out to the NMDHB’s health promotion service for information. “We patrol the school grounds it’s like going back to the 1980s, chasing smokers across the school yard.” Nelson College for Girls’ principal Cathy Ewing says that while vaping “is not a particular problem” for her school, they will be holding an information evening in October for parents and caregivers to be better informed about the risks involved.

Nelson schools have been reporting a worrying trend of students increasingly vaping. Photo: Donn Gabriel Baleva. “There has been an excellent response by parents and caregivers who are interested in attending.” Gayle Hay, Smokefree Health Promoter at Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service, who runs these information sessions says they encourage parents to talk and connect with their kids regularly. “They also offer the opportunity to plan alongside other parents on how to have these conversations and hear their common experiences.” She says she is happy to see the new laws will come into effect soon. “The bill presents some first great steps taken to support both those wanting to become
smoke-free and protect young people from starting to vape. There is more work still to be done to de-normalise smoking and vaping. Our young people copy what they see, and vaping should always only be seen as a quitsmoking tool.” The new law will also ban vaping in cars with children, enable all retailers to display products instore and allow speciality stores to continue offering loyalty points and discounts. It also provides a framework for regulations to be set where people are allowed to vape in or outside premises and introduces a safety system which will allow the Ministry of Health to recall products, suspend them and issue warnings.

High hopes as local Auction items now total $50,000 cannabis company Jacqui Rawson The community behind Nelson College looks to fly students are not letting uncertain Matt McCrorie
A Nelson-based medical cannabis company has high hopes after raising more than $1 million through crowdfunding and landing a $90 million supply deal, despite not having grown any plants yet. The company, chaired by former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, announced last year that it had been granted a cultivation licence by the Ministry of Health, and that a site had been found for a cultivation facility in Brightwater. Plans to break the ground on the research and cultivation facility in Brightwater for mid2020 have been pushed to 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Essentially, we had an investor lined up for the Brightwater facility, but through Covid his businesses interests took a hit and he got nervous
around investing. It happens,” says Aldo. The company is moving forward with a retrofit facility in Christchurch which will enable the company to start fulfilling existing orders, and hopefully give investors confidence that the business model works. Despite not having a single plant in the ground, over $1 million has been raised through crowd funding, with hopes to reach $2m. It has also signed an agreement to supply Australian company Hektares with $30m of medicinal cannabis next year and a further $60m worth in 2022. Around 200 new jobs will be created once the Brightwater facility gets up and running. The Government legalised medicinal cannabis in December 2018 and passed regulations that enabled the scheme in December 2019.

Nelson College students are organising a fundraising auction to help raise awareness of mental health issues. The Key to Life Charitable Trust, which seeks to effect a social change towards how people view youth suicide, will be the recipient. Its founder, comedian Mike King, will be the guest of honour on the night. Local businesses have swung their support behind the event and amassed prize donations to the value of $50,000. “The generosity keeps coming and it keeps surprising me every time, it’s actually very humbling,” says auction organiser Steve Page. “Going out and asking people for donations is not always an easy task and certainly not in the current climate.” Trend Kitchens are the auction’s lead sponsor who have donated the design and installation of a top-of-the-line kitchen fit-out worth $20,000. “It was a privilege to be asked to support this cause and I’m proud to be able to support a charity that is so deserving as this,” says Trends Kitchens Nelson branch manager, Grant MacPherson. Other impressive donations include a one-day hunting trip to

Another is the latest Shimano 9000S electric package - fishing rod, reel and braid - from Hunting and Fishing Richmond. “It’s a worthwhile cause that we’re so proud to be supporting and to be involved with,” says the owner of Hunting and Fishing Richmond, Mike Darling. Other donations include a sevenday hire of a 6-berth motorhome hire from Discover New Zealand, a $3000 bed from Bed Post, equipment from Sound Systems, Richmond Mall vouchers, and a year’s supply of eggs. The family of one of the Nelson College students have also provided a two-night apartment stay in Nelson, inclusive of meals, to the value of $1000. Nelson MP Nick Smith has also offered
a four-course meal for four at Bellamy’s Restaurant in Wellington and a private tour of Parliament as a prize. The event is on Thursday, September 24, at 7pm in the Nelson College hall. Tables at the auction are limited to 35, which are selling fast. Tickets, which include canapes and drinks, can be bought through the Nelson College office, contact 03- 548 3099. Costs are $400 for a table of 10, and single tickets are $45. If you’d like to offer your support in some way, even if it’s to help out on the night, please give Steve Page a call on 0275 449 448. Keyboard error sparks local Covid fears Paula Hulbert Accidently hitting the wrong key on a computer sparked fears Covid-19 had returned to the region. A Covid-19 test was accidently recorded as positive after a manual entry error. Staff discovered the mistake three hours later after lab staff checked the results. The patient was not told of the positive result. Medlab South Nelson Marlborough Clinical Microbiologist Dr Juliet Elvy says a manual entry error is to blame for the mix up. “A manual entry error was made in recording the result for a Covid-19 test – due to a keystroke error. “The incorrect test result was passed on to the Medical Officer of Health and that notification was withdrawn immediately after the error was detected – about three hours later.” Southern Community Laboratories (SCL) run the labs at Nelson Hospital and Wairau Hospitals. Dr Elvy says the error was
detected before the incorrect result was given to the person who had been tested.
“We are doing all we can to support our staff who are meeting the unprecedented demands of Covid testing.” Processes have been changed in the wake of the incident. “We now have processes in place which mean we no longer rely on manual entry of test results, and all validation of manually entered tests is done by a second scientist,” she says. The member of staff had been doing an eight-hour shift at the lab when the error occurred. Laboratories in both Marlborough and Nelson have been swamped processing Covid-19 swabs. Between 13 and 23 August alone, a total of 3210 tests were done in Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman, including 902 in
Marlborough. The figures come from all test providers; communitybased assessment centres (CBACs), GP clinics, afterhours clinics (urgent care) and hospitals and at Port Nelson. Dr Elvy says staff have processed 10,000 Covid-19 tests from Nelson and Marlborough. "This testing has significantly ramped up since community transmission was detected in Auckland earlier this month. “We are doing all we can to support our staff who are meeting the unprecedented demands of Covid testing,” she says. Nelson Marlborough Health general manager for strategy, primary and community, Cathy O’Malley, says Nelson Marlborough Health has full confidence in Medlab South during this unprecedented time. Meanwhile, Nelson will remain in Level 3 until Sunday evening and facemasks are mandated on all public transport.

‘Maskateers’ come to the rescue The Tahunanui Community Hub is humming with the sound of sewing machines as experienced creators go about making masks for those in need. “We thought it was something that we should do,” says centre manager Mark French. They put out the call to people who knew their way around a sewing machine and, before long, there was
a dedicated team at work. Mark calls them the “Maskateers”. The masks, which have been suggested by the Ministry of Health to help combat the spread of Covid-19, are available from the centre for a donation. You can drop in to 55/61 Muritai Street, Tahunanui, or message their Facebook page to find out how to get your own mask.

Seven baby tuatara surprise Natureland Sara Hollyman Seven baby tuatara have hatched at Natureland – possibly for the last time at the wildlife park. Manager Stephen Standley says the tuatara hatched in late November and came as a welcome surprise, although they do not plan on breeding any more. “It was a completely natural incubation and definitely a first since the Natureland Wildlife Trust started operating Natureland in 2013,” he says. Zookeeper Toni Gordon is tasked with monitoring the new additions and has been measuring and weighing them monthly. At the seven-month check they weighed in at between 4 and 6 grams and lengths varied in size from 115 to 120mm.
Female tuatara only breed once every two to five years, taking up to three years to provide an egg with yolk and another seven months to grow the shell. They then dig a hole in the ground, lay their clutch, and bury them them for another 12 to 15 months before hatchlings emerge and dig their way out of the ground. It was only at this point that Natureland staff realised they had the new additions – Toni saying it was an “interesting surprise”. “I was feeding the locusts to the adults and one jumped out of my hand, in the corner of my eye I saw movement and assumed it was the locust but when I looked closer it was a baby tuatara.” “I counted three that day and thought ‘wow, that’s great’, but by
the end of the week we had found the seven.” She says they searched everywhere in the enclosure for signs of where they had hatched but could not find the site. The females have since been separated from the male, and the new-borns have their own enclosure, which is on display to the public. The gender of the hatchlings is determined by the heat at incubation. Cooler soil temperatures will produce females and warmer temperatures produce males. It is for this reason that tuatara are increasingly threatened by human-induced factors, such as global warming. The tuatara at Natureland are cared for in partnership with Ngāti Koata for education and

Work progresses at Kohatu Motorsport and Adventure Park Kate Russell Work at the much-anticipated Kohatu Park is progressing, while membership to its incorporated society has been made free of charge. The motorsport and adventure park development is located just east of Motueka Valley Highway with plans including a 3.5km car
racing track, a rally circuit, drag racing strip and karting track. The Olivers Rd junction upgrade was completed in December 2019 and work on widening and upgrading the access road into the park commenced in July. The Kohatu Park board have also made associate membership totally free, so that as many people as possible can keep up
with the progress. The Nelson Offroad Racing Club has been holding club-only practice sessions for over a year at the park, and last year the Nelson Car Club carved out an autocross track of over 1.4 km on which club members are now competing each month. Talks are ongoing with the Nelson Motorcycle Club with
the aim of achieving similar results for their members, and discussions with other local motorsport clubs are also taking place. Nearly half of the 500-acre site has been allocated to nonmotorised activities. “We want to provide space and facilities to appeal to all sectors of the Nelson Tasman
population,” says Kohatu Park chairman Garry Adcock. “Cyclo-cross, mountainbikes, orienteering, clay pigeon shooting, remote-control vehicles and drones are among the possibilities that we are looking at.” An open day may be held later this year. To find out more, visit www.kohatupark.nz

A woman who helped create a Lord of the Rings-inspired hut, has been forced to move the structure out of public view. The hut was made during the national lockdown to lift spirits and was displayed at the Montebello subdivision in Stoke. “Everyone who saw it loved it, families would get out of their cars and people would photograph it,” Gay Hodgetts says. However, following “a couple of complaints,” Gay was ordered to remove the Bilbo Hut by the subdivision's developer. “It doesn’t do any harm except delight.” Upset at the thought of it
being demolished, the woman had the hut moved into her courtyard. “I was told it can’t be seen from the road, but what good is it there?” The hut, which cost $2000 to build and hours of labour, was extremely popular among residents and visitors.
“It was joy to the world, bring back Bilbo.” “There was a group of people standing there looking around and wondering where it’s gone, cars came by and drivers stopped to ask what happened.”
Gay says she was told by the subdivision owner that the hut was in breach of the residential covenant. “I asked to meet face to face and discuss what I could change to make it acceptable, but I didn’t get a reply.” Due to its placement, Gay says the hut did not obscure views or impede access to anyone. “Some have made the suggestion to put it in the paddock across the road, but that wasn’t allowed either.” Following a traumatic experience in her home late last year, Gay says she was feeling excited about being back outside in the garden and having people come up and enjoy the hut. “It was joy to the world, bring back Bilbo.” Requests for comment from the Montebello owner were not answered.
Our vegetation team surveys the network regularly, checking for trees and other vegetation that is a risk to the power lines. Before you plant anything near power lines, consider how big it will grow. We send ‘cut and trim’ (CT) notices to property owners where we find any trees growing too close to our power lines. We are required to do this by law under the Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. If you receive a CT notice you can choose to have the trees trimmed or felled. The Regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim. We keep a database of each surveyed site so if you are eligible for a free trim, our tree contractor will cut the tree back to a safe distance from the lines. You are then responsible for keeping the tree trimmed in the future so that it doesn’t grow too close again. Trees notified to you in a CT notice must only be cut by a network certified arborist. They have specific training and the necessary insulated tools to safely cut trees close to power lines. Our vegetation surveyors also look for trees that are a high risk to the power lines – these include trees that are diseased, or have damaged trunks/broken branches that could fall onto the power lines. Owners of these trees will be contacted by our surveyors to discuss their options. Surveying our power lines and working with tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages caused by trees. We appreciate the effort that tree owners are making to keep their trees clear of the power lines, your neighbours will too! If you have any questions please contact our vegetation team on 0800 508 098 or email trees@networktasman.co.nz

Airport head No job losses expected as Honda leaves Bowater group steps down Jacqui Rawson There’ll be no loss of jobs once the current Honda facility on Elm Street has gone through its reconstruction to bring all of Honda’s existing operations together in the one location in Stoke. “Making sure all of the Bowater Motor’s employees still had jobs was of paramount importance,” says Bowater Motors chief executive, Chris Bowater. With the local Honda dealership having been part of the Bowater Motor Group for over 47 years, the decision by Honda New Zealand to consolidate their operations has a direct impact on the Group including the closing of Bowater Honda’s dealership doors in October. “While I’m personally sad to see Honda leave the Bowater Group after more than 40 years, it has been a privilege to work so closely with the senior Honda NZ team,” says Chris. He adds that ensuring his award-winning team of Honda salesman still had jobs ‘was a bit of a mission’ to bring to fruition but was a priority and has been achieved. “All of the Bowater Motors employees will remain in Nelson, with jobs either being offered with Honda or with the Bowater Motors Group,” says Chris. The reconstruction and consolidation to take place at the Elm Street facility in Stoke mean all of Honda’s assembly and fit-out operations in the region will remain but
will be consolidated so that all service and sales are in one place. A part of which is to be a new retail concept store. “This week we have written to each of our customers to let them know that by November this year all Honda NZ services will move to our Stoke site,” says Honda New Zealand’s managing director, Nobuya Sonoda. Sonoda said staff numbers remained stable at the Nelson site and none of its staff are being made redundant nor working reduced hours due to this move. “This move is about strengthening our Nelson operation and reflects our commitment to the New Zealand market says,” Nobuya. The New Zealand Motor Corporation acquired the franchise for Honda back in the mid-1970s. And most of the output of cars from the former Nelson Motor Vehicle Assembly Plant on Quarantine Rd in the 1980s was Honda. “Regretfully, after 47 years our partnership with Honda New Zealand will come to an amicable and mutually agreed, end,” says Chris. But adds that even though they will be a leaner organisation going forward, they will actually come through the changes in good shape, more focused and determined than ever to continue to successfully serve the Nelson / Tasman communities for many more years to come.

The CEO of Nelson Airport, Rob Evans, has announced his resignation after five years in the job. Airport chairman Paul Steere says Rob achieved great success with the management of passenger growth, the strong leadership shown in the building of the new terminal, and his dealing with the Covid-19 challenge. He says that that challenge has made Rob assess his future career path and is now looking for new challenges. "We wish him well and thank him for the significant commercial contribution made under his stewardship.” Paul says Nelson Airport has achieved substantial success over the last five and a half years, culminating in the completion of the award-winning terminal development. "Along the way many new relationships have been developed and the airport reached 1 million passengers in 2019." Rob says it's been an privilege and an honour to have led Nelson Airport through an "extraordinary period of growth”. "I came to this beautiful part of the world at the start of 2015 and so much has been achieved. It is now time to move on and pass the baton over. Whilst the industry is experiencing challenging times, it will rebound and there are exciting times ahead for Nelson.” Paul Steere says that a trans-Tasman search has begun for his replacement.

Whanake Youth gets new space Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
New friends, improved selfconfidence and plenty of cheese toasties has made Whanake Youth a popular hangout spot for young people in Nelson. Sisters Scarlett and Kiana Shutkowski have become regulars at the youth centre Kiana first started coming to the after school programme two years ago and is now a youth leader for Whanake Youth. “I felt like I needed some time with people other than my family, thought it was a great environment to be in.” She says she loves watching the kids grow and become part of the family. Scarlett says she was dragged along to the centre six months ago by her big sister and has kept coming ever since. “It’s just a really fun place to be and make lots of new friends, I’m not really good at making friends and since I’ve come here, I’ve made lots.” Scarlett says she used to suffer from low self-esteem before she found Whanake Youth.
The charity has become such an integral part of the Nelson community it required a bigger space to cater for its growth. Youth worker Nathan Hughes recently joined the team and helped in the refurbishment of the new drop-in centre, located at the back of the Stoke Memorial Hall. “It was a bit rough, took a couple weeks to paint, but we have way more space, which is great.” Nathan says the former site across Marsden Rec raised issues with neighbours in close proximity. “Now we can get a bit raucous.” Whanake Youth has leased the building, formerly a senior’s hall, from Nelson City Council. Nathan says the centre serves a real need in the community. “People come when they want to come as it meets an appropriate need, whether people need some positive role models or a sense of purpose.” Scarlett and Kiana both strongly encourage youth, particularly those struggling with social issues, to visit the centre. “Be part of the family, we are all friendly.”

Your Voice Council vote to progress $16.5m Civic House refurbishment: To put that in perspective, $16m would build from scratch - 32 four-bedroom homes at $500k each. Or renovate 80 homes with a budget of $200k each. Andy Williams How does a refurbishment cost $16m? Is this the cost before the standard blowout or prior to? Can they ensure putting a brown paper bag over the ugly clock tower? Paul Muollo Hey NCC, my mate 'Dave' says he'll do the whole job for $2m cash, no questions asked? Izzy Rose Are they papering the walls with $50 notes? Christine O'Connell They're just ‘developing a business case for the refurbishment' - not committing to spending it. It's a fraction of what it would cost for a new building, which, if the rumours of crumbling in there are true, then that is a serious option if it's left. Timing for this discussion isn't great financially, but it will be in the long-term plan if it goes ahead, not done right now. There will be government subsidies and green 'pots' they might get funding from, not just ratepayers’ money. Disappointed that this article makes no mention of the tower
being part of the refurbishment hopefully that is in the plan. Thrilled to read that “...will aid council in attracting and retaining high quality staff ” - this gives hope that council staff - who are the bane of Nelson lives with the ridiculous things they implement and spend our money on - from the top down - could be replaced. Dee Edge
Surely a paint job would suffice for the current times. Jodie Simpson We are heading into the largest economic crisis of our lifetime and NCC are looking at refurbishing their offices. Steve Day Council pushes for changes to voting and terms: A referendum on the topic would have been nice. I also think all councillors should have performance reviews done annually by non-council members. Chamber of Commerce? Gary Scott Just wanting to change things to their benefit. As for saying more women need to be in office is the typical load off crap. People should vote for who is best not based on sex or race or religion. That's just my opinion. Paul Jones Cat club paws it forward: Thanks for donating to the cats at the SPCA. Sorry to see the club finish up. Penny Toft

Nelson Matters National announced tough new border policies last week. https://www.national.org.nz/securing-our-border. This is what is needed to stop further incursions of Covid and prevent the huge consequential disruption and economic damage. New Zealand has a huge natural advantage in this pandemic as the most geographically isolated country in the world. The problem is we keep squandering this with sloppy border management. We were slow to close our borders in February. It was a mistake to allow tourists to continue to enter New Zealand in March on the basis they would self-isolate. I had numerous Nelson reports
of these requirements being blatantly ignored. I also had reports from dozens of Nelsonians returning to New Zealand earlier this year appalled at the lax controls on re- entry compared to other countries. These failings contributed to our first wave of Covid requiring the six week lockdown but were forgivable given this novel virus and unprecedented challenge. I was proud as to how Nelson and New Zealand responded. We limited the death toll from Covid to 22 and by May had us free of the virus. It was plain by April that extensive testing was pivotal to containing this disease. The World Health Organisation refrain was
Test, Test, and Test. Ministers assured New Zealand in June everybody crossing the border would be tested on day 3 and day 12 of their isolation. It is scandalous that 70% were not, triggering the resignation of Health Minister David Clark. The new Health Minister Chris Hipkins assured us all border and isolation staff would be regularly tested. We found out last week that 63% were never tested. Many requested it but were refused. Experts say this is the most likely cause of NZ’s second wave of Covid. The consequence has cost billions with our largest city having to be closed down. Many businesses have failed and thousands of jobs lost. The Gov-

ernment got complacent. Testing dropped to just six one day nationwide prior to the second wave of infection. National proposes six changes to fix our border controls. We will Covid test every traveler before entering New Zealand. The Government says this breaches returning New Zealanders human rights. Tough times require tough measures. It is more reasonable to infringe these travelers’ rights by testing them, than the rights and jobs of millions affected by re-incursions and lockdowns. Nor is it in these people or other passenger’s interests to be flying while they have Covid. National will create a single border control agency to address
the muddled approach from multiple Ministers and agencies. We will regularly test all border and isolation facility staff. We will also make contact tracing technology compulsory for anyone who treats or tests Covid patients. We will also widen the availability of Covid testing and establish a maximum waiting time of 60 minutes. We will also invest in Bluetooth technology of the sort developed by Nelson entrepreneur Sam Morgan. National’s policy is about multiple lines of defence. Yo – yoing in and out of lockdown is not sustainable. Tough times call for tough border measures. Advert.

Get your radiator checked before you head away Before you hit the road for a short break or family holiday, it’s important to make sure your vehicle’s radiator is in top-top condition for the journey. Seeka Panels and Parts on Vanguard Street specialises in three main areas: automotive parts, mechanical repairs and radiator repairs. “Stu Brown, our radiator specialist, has been doing this since he left school, and was trained by one of the better guys around,” says Seeka Panels and Parts co-owner Robert Jefcoate. With 25 years’ experience working with radiators behind him, Stu can repair all types of radiators, supply and fit new radiators and he also does cooling system analysis and can custom-build radiators for special projects. “When it comes to radiators, preventative maintenance is key,” says Stu. “I also recommend people keep some anti-freeze handy, and if there is a leak, get it sorted as soon as possible. Or if there is an overheating issue; it could be the radiator or thermostat.” Stu says the radiator is a major part in an engine’s cooling system and needs preventative

maintenance. If any part of the cooling system is broken, blocked or damaged, it won’t work properly. Don’t wait until it’s too late – when your vehicle is overheating and blowing smoke everywhere or has suffered major damage. Get your issues fixed early – let Stu quickly diagnose what the problem is and get your car safely back on the road. “We have the right equipment to be able to fix any kind of radiator, from small cars to logging trucks,” says Stu. “If it’s ‘water-cooled’ we can sort it out. Come and see us and we will provide you with a free quote.” Seeka Panels and Parts was first established in 1998, then in 2009, Robert and his wife Sheryl bought into the radiator side of things. If your car needs a part, Seeka can supply it from their own stock or source it through their nationwide network of dismantlers. Seeka Parts and Panels is located at 134A Vanguard Street, Nelson. Daffodil Day turns 30 locals urged to donate
Since the first Daffodil Day in 1990, the yearly rate of cancer incidence has doubled. And it’s expected to climb further. “With the demand for our services increasing, the Cancer Society’s support is more vital than ever, and as an organisation we have adapted to meet the increasing demand for our cancer support services,” says Michelle Hunt, Centre Manager, Cancer Society Nelson-Tasman.
‘Testing time’ for Cancer Society
2020 has been a particularly ‘testing’ year for the local branch.
“Our services haven’t stopped – our priority during the Covid-19 pandemic has been to continue supporting people with cancer. We have spent more time on our phone lines, providing counselling and helping vulnerable people with cancer and their whanau, and we have supported families financially in a greater way, especially during the lockdown because, without the airlines flying, people were having to drive down to Christchurch for their treatment so we were providing petrol vouchers. “Unfortunately, cancer doesn’t stop just because Covid turns up.” In recent weeks, Cancer Society Nelson-Tasman has been getting a large number of referrals, because during the lockdown the screening programmes weren’t running, and at Alert Level 2 and above, they have had to suspend all of their support programmes because of the vulnerability of people’s immunity. Young ones step up for street appeal
This week the front room at Cancer Society Nelson-Tasman will be filled with beautiful daffodils to bunch ready for Daffodil Day (Centre Manager Michelle Hunt, Cyndy Smith and Bronwyn Yelverton). charities throughout New Zealand, Covid-19 has also impacted their ability to hold important fundraising events. “Relay for Life was supposed to take place
on March 21st, so that got shut down. The Heritage Homes tour had to be cancelled as did the ball in June, so Daffodil Day is really important for us,” says Michelle.
“Not only is it a 30-year anniversary nationally but it’s the only fundraiser we are able to hold this year due to Covid.” With a lot of their volunteers being of retirement age, some are understandably feeling apprehensive about getting involved this Daffodil Day. “But we have a lot of younger people who have stepped up this year, which is fantastic.” Michelle says this week all of the volunteers are going out picking daffodils, but things will be slightly different when it comes to bunching them up. “Our room will be filled with beautiful daffodils as usual, but everyone will be wearing safety gear and hand sanitiser!”

Volunteers in Wakefield happily picked daffodils for a previously held Daffodil Day, which is an annual event to raise funds for cancer. Tapawera, Golden Bay and Motueka. The groups are there for anyone who has had cancer and they also run groups for caregivers. “People always learn something, whether it’s learning how to cope
or learning about the system or the subsidies you can get.” Cancer Society Nelson also hold free yoga classses for anyone who has had cancer and they offer a free gym programme for 8 weeks with a personal trainer to help them
In the lead up to Daffodil Day on August 28th, the Cancer Society is celebrating 30 years of Daffodil Day with the launch of their 30 stories of Daffodil Day on social media. “The people we’ve worked with, and those we’ve helped, are telling their stories about the impact cancer has had on their lives. You can donate online at www. cancernelson.org.nz/donate or via QR codes on their posters. “We want to make it easier for those of you who won’t be out and about or who aren’t carrying cash,” says Michelle. “This will help our street appeal.” ANZ has been a major sponsor of the Cancer Society since 1990 and the principal sponsor of Daffodil Day. With their annual charity auction cancelled due to Covid-19, Big Brothers Big Sisters have decided to take it online. The not-for-profit organisation, which matches kids with adult mentors, was due to hold their sold-out charity event this Friday at the Trafalgar Centre. “We had 230 people due to attend, but unfortunately with the uncertainties around Alert Level 2 we had to make the call to cancel the event,” says programme director Chelsea Routhan. In order to still raise some much-needed funds for the organisation, the auction has moved online via a platform called GalaBid, with 40 donated items up for grabs. Benjamin Black Earrings, a Maruia River retreat, an insulation package, Lego, wing lights from the old Nelson Airport terminal, wine, a Deadly Ponies handbag and a $4000 orthodontic voucher are

The auction is now live and bidding closes on Monday, 31 August at 8pm. Chelsea says that past events have raised $50,000 for the organisation and she hopes they can still pull in a decent amount this year. “Obviously, having a live auction would have been great,
but hopefully we can get more people involved this way.” Chelsea says the auction would not be possible without the generous help of the community and their sponsor, Nelson Airport. “We are completely reliant on the community for donations. All the money absolutely goes back into Big Brothers Big
Sisters.” Proceeds from the auction will go directly towards matching young people in Nelson and Tasman on their waiting list, as well recruiting, training, supervising and supporting their 200 active matches from Hira to Golden Bay. You can check out the auction at app.galabid.com/bbbs/items
The Nelson Weekly Great MP debate has been delayed due to a shift in the election date. It was scheduled for this weekend but a change in the election date to October 17 means that organisers and participants thought it made better sense to move it closer to the actual voting day. Weekly editor Charles Anderson says that they decided to move the debate to Sunday, October 4. The debate will be held at The Workshop Bar and Brewery on New St. Last year, the Nelson Weekly ran a livestreamed debate with local mayoral candidates in a pub and resulted in a packed-out venue and thousands of views online. Charles says some questions for the debate will be made up from those submitted by Weekly readers. “We want you to email us with questions you’d like us to ask the candidates. We have the opportunity to put questions to them on your behalf.” Email your questions to editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz The Nelson Weekly MP Debate will be held at The Workshop on October 4 at 7.30pm. Entry is first come first served.

Garin student impresses with his country style Matt McCrorie A Garin College student has wowed national judges with his unique entry into this year’s Smokefreerockquest. Zac Griffith, 15, who placed in the top three for the regional competition, was placed highly commended in the national competition this year for his unique country music style and original songs.
This year, due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the usual weekend of high-school bands rocking out on stage was replaced by video entries, with students recording themselves performing and sending videos to judges to be placed. Zac, who sings and plays guitar, placed in the Nelson regional competition with his original song ‘When tracks had trains’ which he wrote about the old railway lines in the Top of the South. His first time entering Smokefreerockquest, Zac was nervous that his country style might not fly. “I had to write two more songs for the national competition, it took me by surprise,” Zac says. “Zac is one of these amazing young people who is a song writing machine. It wasn’t like starting from scratch,” says music teacher Kathryn Hunt.
“He was very reluctant to enter as a country boy, he didn’t feel it was the genre,” she says. While this year is Zac’s first foray into Smokefreerockquest, performing country music isn’t new to him. He travelled to a country music academy in Australia in 2018 on a scholarship. “That’s when I started song writing.” An experienced performer, Zac first got into country music when he was 7-years-old. “I watched the Johnny Cash movie ‘Walk the Line’ when I was seven,
and then we went to the pub in Tapawera with my family one night, and I got up and sung ‘Ring of Fire,’ and I’ve been hooked ever since.” “I didn’t think Rockquest would be the right fit for my country music, but obviously it was,” Zac says of his win. “Zac’s style wasn’t like anything I’d seen at rockquest, and I thought that would be a good thing,” says Kathryn, who encouraged Zac to enter. “He’s going to win next year, no doubt,” says Kathryn.

Marist and Waimea into final Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson club rugby's most enthralling recent rivalry will reignite in the division one final this weekend. Marist and Waimea Old Boys both booked spots in the final with close fought victories on Saturday afternoon. Marist survived a stern challenge from a revitalised Nelson side while Waimea held off Kahurangi 24-21 in Motueka. Marist coach Gavin Briggs says he was both pleased and relieved following the final whistle. "It was a good tight tussle out there, we got a good scare, we just didn't execute our plans, but it just shows the character and resolve and belief this side has. We were a bit patchy but finals pressure does that." He says his side welcome the challenge from rivals Waimea. "Over the last few years, we certainly have got to know one another in finals footy and everyone will bring it. From the start we were striving to get to the big dance, so let’s go." After dominating the first half
hour, Nelson conceded three quick tries just before half time. Marist would carry that momentum into the second and quash any hopes of an upset. It was a thrilling start to the clash as a storming run from Isaiah Miller was followed by a brutal hit, a heated push and shove and a warning to both sides. Nelson’s Matt Soper put the first points on the board before centre Apetone Vaka exploded onto a short ball and bulldozed his way over the line for his first try. Nelson appeared a different side than what its 2-7 season record would suggest, dominating Marist across the park. Anton Segner was back from a month out with a head knock and was making his presence felt at ruck time, while Saul Lewis and Nick Foxley were looking dangerous out wide. Vaka went in for his second as he plucked a Marist pass out of the air and went 50 metres untouched as Nelson raced to a 15-0 advantage. Hooker Leo Maupese scored Marist’s first points as he burst off the back of a lineout drive. Marist pulled another one back one minute before the break as
Marist halfback Cleve Barrell dives over during his sides 35-22 semi-final win over Nelson at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. Niko Barton slipped through the line to bring his side within three. The Tasman trophy champions weren’t done yet however, breaking out of their own half from the restart with Rahiri Witihera nudging ahead for Cleve Barrell to steal a 19-15 halftime lead. Sam Briggs scored the first points of the second and extended the lead to ten with 25 minutes to play. Another blow then followed for
Nelson with an injured Miller assisted from the field as Briggs nailed his third penalty of the half. Nelson refused to lie down, however, and Vaka would go in for a hat-trick on the back of another powerful and direct charge at the chalk. Marist would put the result to bed soon after as a precision cross kick from Jamie Spowart found Niko Barton in acres of space and the young fly half stepped his way to the try-line and put his side
into another final.

Sharp shooter Shar back in business Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Shar Lowe has become accustomed to sinking crucial goals under pressure. The Prices-Waimea Ahurei goal shoot has scored the winning points in two premier netball finals in nail-biting, last second finishes. Shar says it’s an unfortunate reality of her position that games are often won or lost on her shoulders. “The downside of being a shooter is that everyone remembers who missed or got the shot.” However, Shar has, more often than not, stepped up when her side needs her the most. “I just try to remember that, while it does matter, it doesn’t really. The reality is there may be one or two points in it but there are so many other things that happen in a game that affect it.” Shar returned to the court this season after sitting 2019 out to give birth to her second child, Fern. She says, while it is good to be back, the stop-start nature of the season has been difficult. “I have struggled as bit this year coming back from baby number
two and the fact we are pretty light on shooters.” Shar came back to plenty of new faces in the squad. “Our whole attacking end is different, but it’s been good having young ones come through.” Also new to the Prices team this year is former Mainland Tactix star Zoe Walker. “We push harder because Zoe does, coming from that highperformance background, she can go that much longer.” Prices are on the hunt for a three-peat this year but of course standing in their way will be rivals Jacks OPD. The sides have been involved in some epic encounters in recent seasons. “You can almost scrap the first three quarters and just play the last to see what happens, it always comes down to the last five minutes and so much can go on.” The last two premier finals saw Prices prevail 43-41 in 2018 and 36-35 last season. Shar is confident her club can go back to back to back. “It will be about consistency no matter what combinations we have on court.” Growing up in Stoke, Shar played netball throughout her years at Nelson College for Girls, making

After four years in the UK, the pair returned to Nelson where Shar would take her talents to
Prices. Success soon followed with the first of three championships coming in 2015. Shar says, after seven years, she will never change clubs. “My family has instilled a sense of loyalty to people who treat you right so I will always be a Prices girl.” She admits it has been an adjustment juggling her netball commitments, two young children and part-time job at Clifton Terrace School.
“It can be a bit tricky but I’m really lucky to have a very supportive husband.” Shar is hopeful they can continue the season after two separate breaks due to Covid-19 restrictions. “Things are a bit frustrating but it’s just the way of the world at the moment.” She says she has no immediate plans to hang up the skirt. “It’s a bit tough on the body these days but I will play as long as I can.”

FC Nelson’s goal scoring machine Locally Owned and Operated
Growing up in Myanmar, Biak Tha Thang Vanuk longed to play football. However, with his village scarce of resources and organised sports leagues, Vanuk was resigned to living out his football dreams through YouTube videos of Cristiano Ronaldo. So, when his family relocated to Nelson in 2010, Vanuk was ecstatic to join local football club Metro. “I remember going to my first training at Victory Square and, seeing all the balls and cones, I thought ‘this is like what I see on TV’. I was pretty excited.” With no training or proper understanding of the rules, Vanuk says he was a liability for his first side. Not discouraged, Vanuk honed his skills by playing with fellow Chin community members after church at Guppy Park. It was here he got a taste for scoring goals and where he made the switch from defence to attack. The switch proved profitable as Vanuk has gone on to establish himself as one of the top strikers in Nelson club football. Vanuk has netted 14 goals for FC Nelson this season with his side hot on the heels of competition leaders Rangers.
Football: FC Nelson is hot on the heels of competition leaders Rangers after picking up an emphatic victory in division one football action over the weekend. FC netted seven goals, four in the first half against Tahuna with Thang Thang Vanuk and Asher Jefferies each scoring doubles. Meanwhile, Richmond and Rangers played out a thriller in Blenheim. The match also served as the second round of the Price Charity Cup with the sides ending 90 minutes at 2-2. Richmond would end up falling short in extra-time, the hosts prevailing 4-2. In the rounds final fixture, Nelson College picked up just its second win of the season, 2-1 over Nelson Suburbs.

Last season, Vanuk made the call to

Nelson’s marathon man still running strong Over the next few months, sports reporter Jonty Dine is putting the spotlight on our off-field superstars. These people work tirelessly to make sport in our region happen - without trophies or medals to recognise their efforts.
Stuart Hague has been organising runs in the region for over a decade. Photo: Jonty Dine.
Stuart Hague ran his first half marathon in 1986 and hasn’t looked back since. He has gone on to complete more than 200 half marathons, 10 full marathons and an ironman. His passion for running extends off the course as well, as Stuart helps organise up to 70 races a year for the public. Stuart will do everything from taking registrations, to setting out the course and manually inputting results on the computer. Though organising such largescale events is incredibly time consuming, Stuart says it’s always worth the effort. “I like seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces, putting in the effort and finishing the race.” Stuart also recently stepped up to assume the mantle of acting president of Athletics Nelson after the death of Eric Verstappen. “I did it to help keep the club alive.” After losing their parents at
a young age, Stuart and his brother decided to take up running in the 1980s. “One day he said ‘let’s do something crazy and run a half marathon’, we entered the Buller Marathon and I haven’t missed one since then.” He now helps put on everything from summer pub runs to children’s cross-country. Stuart has also been instrumental in growing the Nelson half marathon from 400 runners to 850 last year, but is quick to deflect credit. “An organiser is only as good as the people round them and I have a great bunch of people that make me look good.” He says his proudest moments in running came in 2018 when he completed the Paris Marathon and two weeks later ran the London Marathon. “That was the best race I’ve ever been in, the crowd, organisation, people, and the runners, it was amazing.” Stuart says running is all about
the top two inches. “It’s just you against the course. A lot of people think they aren’t fit enough but people surprise themselves, the body is a wonderful machine. It will do a hell of a lot more than you think it can, it will go through a lot of extremes to get you to the finish.” He says you don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy the sport. “Just come and give it a go. The first step holds a lot of people back.” He says we are blessed to have a running mecca here in Nelson and encourages everyone to experience the quality tracks on offer. “When you run with other people, you run faster, further, and just feel better.” If you would like to nominate a ‘good sort in sport’, email jonty@ nelsonweekly.co.nz

MITCHELL Agnes Patricia (Pat)
“Put on another cup of tea.” Talked about the memories. Talked about what’s flowering and next seasons planning. Talked about the weather and just enjoyed time together. Miss those times. Can’t believe a year’s gone. But that’s the nature of the wind, the rain, and all the seasons Long. With love, Ginny.
