Children threatened at playground Sara Hollyman Reporter

CCTV cameras will be installed at Nelson’s brand-new pop-up playground after police were called to various incidents at the city centre amenity over the weekend. The Riverside Youth Pop-up Park on Halifax St, which opened

on Saturday, features a pump track, basketball half-court and imagination playground for younger children. Hundreds of families made use of the new central city spot throughout the weekend. But the immense popularity came with problems as reports of intimidation, bullying and assault soon began to surface. Naomi Smith was at the

playground with her partner and three children on Sunday and says about 50 kids were all trying to use the pump track. Naomi says a teenager threatened to hit her seven-year-old daughter with his scooter if she didn’t get off the pump track. “The kids felt really threatened, there was a group of teenagers who were taking control and telling the others to f**k off and

get off the track. Why should we just up and leave? It’s not our fault these kids are the way they are. “We felt pretty frustrated to be honest, teenagers being teenagers are not going to listen to someone else’s parents,” she says. Naomi says the police turned up in response to another incident and ended up speaking with all the older children after complaints from the younger

kids about the bullying. “The police ended up talking with all of them and told them ‘if you’re not happy, go play at the skate parks or other places where you can go really fast’ and just reminded them to be mindful that it’s for everyone. Once police spoke to them, they bucked their ideas up.”

Good dog Cadbury, good dog Meet NZ’s oldest lab Charles Anderson Hamish Kennedy has no doubt that Cadbury the chocolate Labrador is the oldest dog of his kind in the country, maybe even the world. He also has no doubt that neither of them should be alive – but they have a relationship that meant they needed each other to pull through. Now, at age 19, Cadbury might have lost the best of his vision, as well as suffering from dementia, but he still has the loving personality that shines through.

A police spokesperson says they were called to a separate incident on Saturday where a group of people, including both adults and youths, were arguing, with one person reportedly being assaulted. “When police hear about incidents such as these all staff are made aware so they can actively patrol the area.” They say there are no CCTV cameras that monitor the playground currently. The spokesperson says, on the same day, they were also called to a report of a fight on Rutherford St but the group had left before police arrived. “While these incidents will be concerning for the Nelson community, we want to reassure locals that police are responding to incidents as they arise and

The pop-up park opened over the weekend to rave reviews. Photo: Nelson City Council. that there has been no trend that indicates youth crime is increasing in Nelson,” says the spokesperson. Naomi says, hopefully, once the

initial novelty of the playground dies down it will quieten down and there will be room for all ages to enjoy it. “It is an amazing place, it’s well

thought out, well made, and great for all ages. “The kids definitely want to go back there; they just don’t want to go when the big kids are around.” Nelson City Council’s group manager environmental management, Clare Barton, says council is aware that police were called to an incident that involved both children and adults but would not comment further as it was a police matter. She says that prior to the park opening council officers approved the installation of two cameras with a module that would link the CCTV for the space with police. “The cameras will be installed as soon as possible, and there will be signage in place to make park users aware that they are operating. This is a park for everyone in Nelson and we ask that people respect the park and other users.”

Flu rates plummet amid Covid response Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

An increased vigilance in personal hygiene in the age of Covid-19 has led to a dramatic reduction in influenza rates this season. With increased immunisations and improved practices such as wearing masks, the region has been much healthier as a result. Chief Medical Officer at Nelson Marlborough Health, Dr Nick Baker, says there have been far fewer confirmed cases of influenza in 2020 than in 2019. “The last two hospital admissions we had for flu were in January.” In 2019 there were 217 cases of hospital-related flu cases in the Top of the South, compared to only 7 this year. Nick say there have also been less instances of flu and flu-like illnesses in the community. “GP-based influenza like illness surveillance and testing methods changed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 response. From the more limited amount of testing done, however, there have been no positive influenza results recorded by GPs.” Nick says the main reasons for this are increased immunisation and public health measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Influenza rates in the region have decreased this year thanks in part to mass immunisation. Photo: File. Immunisation started much earlier this year as part of the Government’s response to protect people from contracting both influenza and Covid-19. “It was also a tactical measure to take the pressure off health services, less flu cases mean we could be better prepared for Covid-19.” Associate Health Minister Julie Anne Genter reported that, by August 1, there were 1.76 million vaccines distributed nationwide - 800,000 more compared to 2019. “In the Nelson Marlborough region we also worked hard to increase immunisation uptake – especially for Māori and Pasifika, refugees, people

aged 65 and older, people with existing health conditions and children with health conditions and their whānau members.” Nick says they achieved the highest-ever level of immunisation across these priority groups. “We also had successful immunisation equity this year, Māori, Pasifika and refugees participated in higher than usual numbers.” By July 3, more than 60,400 vaccines had been distributed for use in the Nelson Marlborough region. This compares to 50,108 by the same time in 2019 and 46,699 by the same time in 2018. The flu virus is similar to the Covid-19 virus in that it spreads on water droplets when people cough or sneeze. “People’s willingness to do simple things that protect them from catching and spreading Covid-19 has protected them from the flu, colds and other viruses such as gastro bugs.” Nick says all the thorough hand washing, cleaning of surfaces, covering sneezes and coughs, physical distancing and staying at home when unwell has really paid off. “Wearing a face mask or face covering also makes a big difference.”

Changing face of Nelson’s drug use Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The scale of Nelson’s drug problem is slowly becoming clearer after more than 12 months of wastewater testing for illicit drugs. The National Wastewater Testing Programme, which began in November 2018, tests wastewater for byproducts of illicit drugs found in urine. These include methamphetamine, MDMA, cocaine and fentanyl. In the first three months of testing, from November 2018 – January 2019, Nelson City’s meth usage represented 72 per cent of drugs detected. A year later methamphetamine represented 60 per cent, while

Nelson Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Like us on

MDMA had climbed to 38 per cent from 27. The recently-released results show Kiwis used more than $8 million of illicit drugs each week between Nov 2019 and January 2020, with meth use alone generating an estimated $16 million in social harm. The Tasman Police District was estimated to be consuming almost half a kilogram of the tested drugs per week. A police spokesperson says the increase in MDMA is in line with what police have seen in several regions across the country. The spokesperson says they were “unable to speculate” on what had caused the amount of methamphetamine detected across the region to drop. However, they say

organised crime staff as well as tactical crime teams continue to address crime and methamphetamine production and use across the region. “As the Tasman data is fairly consistent, with few fluctuations, at this stage there has been no significant change that would require additional staffing or an immediate change in how we respond,” says the spokesperson. Nelson Marlborough Health GM mental health & addictions services, Jane Kinsey, says Addiction Services sees around 150 referrals a month across the Nelson, Tasman Marlborough region - a number that remains “relatively constant”. “As an indication, in the month of August 2020

approximately one quarter of the referrals received indicated that people identified some current or previous use of methamphetamine.” Jane says there has been an increase in the number of people who feel comfortable about disclosing their use of methamphetamine when seeking support from the Addictions Service. “We appreciate when people do this, and this disclosure is encouraged so we can provide the right support and treatment.” If anyone has concerns about their use of addictive substances such as methamphetamine, alcohol, and other drugs then contact the Addiction Service in Nelson on (03) 546 1994.

FLIPPING CAR STILL REMAINS: A crashed car has featured on a busy Nelson roundabout for almost a week after the occupants left the scene before police arrival. Police were called to the crash at the Annesbrook Drive roundabout around 9pm last Thursday. On Monday the car was upside down. Police say there is no update on the occupants of the car, but the removal typically falls to either the owner of the vehicle or the council.

Good dog Cadbury, good dog FROM PAGE 1 Cadbury came into Hamish’s life 10 years ago when someone dropped him off saying she could no longer look after the dog. “In those days I drank a lot and I didn’t look after him but our relationship became a codependency that worked. Because I shouldn’t be alive either.” It was only recently that Hamish started looking after himself better. For much of the last decade he was overweight and in a wheelchair, suffering from a disorder that affected his mobility. Cadbury was in a similar situation. They both

needed to get healthier and lose weight. “I decided that we were going to do it together.” Now, thanks to a rigid work out regimen and improved diet, they have both lost a third of their body weight. Hamish doesn’t need a wheelchair anymore and Cadbury is spritely for a 19-year-old chocolate Labrador. The dog has had the same vet for his whole life, who vouches for his age. Some studies have shown median lifespan for chocolate Labradors is just 10.7 years, 1.4 years shorter than black or yellow Labradors. But Cadbury’s age means that his mind is failing him.

It is only in the past week that Hamish has ever been away from him as Cadbury would get anxious and bark whenever he was out of sight. Last week, Hamish took him to Sunday Hole up the Maitai and watched as Cadbury barked into the air. “It was almost like he was lamenting his lost youth.” But he has never had any aggression from other dogs. Hamish thinks its because they can sense his age and respect it. He says Cadbury is a loving dog. He is one that takes up most of the bed, snores something terrible, and will always know how to wake up

his owner – by putting his wet nose into Hamish’s ear. He isn’t sure how much longer Cadbury will live for. The oldest labradors that ever have lived carried on until they were 23. Hamish doesn’t think his old friend will last that long but doesn’t mind if he does. “For me it’s a duty of care. It’s something I signed up to. I really feel like he was a gift to me so it’s my duty now.” This weekend, Hamish will take Cadbury up the Maitai Valley and celebrate a life well lived with some close friends. They will have a barbeque. “And Cadbury can eat whatever he bloody well likes.”

It was great to host Hon Kris Faafoi MP in Nelson on Wednesday and visit some of our new state houses being built in Richmond. The new homes are warm, dry and affordable and will be a welcome addition to our state housing stock here in Nelson. It was also good to meet with community housing providers and the regions two Mayors to talk about the social housing needs in the region. Labour is the Party that builds state houses. We’ve delivered over 4,000 new public houses since we became Government in 2017 and we’re funding 8,000 new public and transitional homes, which will take the number of new public and transitional houses we’ve provided to around 17,000. We know there is more do to, and as your MP I’ll keep working hard to make sure that warm, dry, affordable homes are a reality for everyone in our community.

City centre upgrade 'not halted' Kate Russell

Nelson Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Almost $1m of Waka Kotahi NZTA funding thought lost through Nelson City Council’s decision to slow down its work transforming Trafalgar St may not be wasted after all. At a council meeting on Thursday, the majority of councillors voted to not bring forward the City Streets for People project to align with receiving the $900,000 it was awarded through the NZTA Innovative Streets fund. The timeframes were considered too short and councillors were not willing to put the limited staff members working on the project under the pump. However, mayor Rachel Reese says the money may now be allocated to other Innovative Streets projects in the city. “They’re [NZTA] looking for opportunities in Nelson to reallocate that funding and there’s been some very positive discussions. I’m not in a position to say any more than that, but we’re very hopeful we’re going to see that investment still made in our region." Council sought feedback on

four different options for the city centre through their 'Streets for People' survey in June. They included closing Trafalgar St to vehicles, two footpath widening options with reduced parking on Trafalgar, Hardy and Bridge Sts, or doing nothing. The results were split. Forty-three per cent of respondents were in favour of retaining the current configuration of footpaths and car parks and 39 per cent in favour of closing Trafalgar St entirely to vehicles. “The city development team recommended that it paused because of their workloads and they wanted to get the strategic context,” says Rachel. But she says they have found a way, by putting in some additional resources, to keep the momentum going and bring the timeframe forward. This means engagement and design will commence this year and delivery and implementation will begin next year, with work to be completed by the end of 2022. “So, the project has by no means halted, in fact it’s been advanced.” Council allocated $3.1 million for this work as part

An artist’s impression of what part of the new Trafalgar St could have looked like. Photo: Supplied. of the 2020/21 Annual Plan and an additional $400,000 of operational funding has been provided to advance the Spatial Plan. A bolder “hybrid” plan trial for Trafalgar St was also denied by council last week, which contained elements of the original options. NZTA lead advisor for urban mobility Claire Pascoe attended last week’s meeting via Zoom, and said they would “prefer to see something scaled down implemented, rather than it dying altogether.” Cr Matt Lawrey was the only one to back the hybrid option and took to social media saying the decision echoed last term's decision not to progress the revitalisation of Church St. “Making the Trafalgar St

concept a reality this financial year would have required some shuffling of workloads, but it was possible.” Other councillors backed their decisions on social media, too. Cr Rohan O'Neill-Stevens stated he voted to delay the work because staff “simply don’t have capacity to deliver this work along with everything else they’re doing”. An email that was allegedly sent to councillors and staff from a retailer about the hybrid model, threatening legal action against the council, was also thrown around social media. However, Rachel says this didn’t impact decision-making. “I certainly didn’t feel there were any legal threats from parties and if people felt that was the case, I don’t believe it had any influence in council’s decision-making.”

The students in Room 6 are all using their taringa to listen to their Kaiako. They are using their ears to listen to their teacher. In a few moments they will all take part in Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori/ Māori Language Moment as part of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week. They will join nearly one million Kiwis who signed on to speak, sing or listen to te reo Māori at midday on Monday. “We use te reo phrases which build your confidence,” says teacher/Kaiako Amy Johnson. “The more you use it the better you become. You hear it more often and you see it more often and then it becomes more of what you do.” The tauira all sit attentively while Amy shows them a waiata about the days of the week. When the clock turns 12pm, they begin to sing. Then they turn their attention to tititōrea which is played while also singing waiata.

The students all sit facing each other while singing and beating the sticks in different directions. Olly Richards and Logan Steedman, both 6, slowly get the hang of it – singing at the top of their lungs while the music plays. Amy says she came down to Nelson from Auckland, just over a year ago where the use of te reo Māori in schools seemed to be more widespread. “So here we are trying to build it.”

She says it’s important to speak the language as a reflection of country. “We are all part of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are all in this waka together.” September 14 marked 48 years since a small group of language champions presented a petition to Parliament from 30,000 New Zealanders asking the government to teach Māori language in schools. The 1972 petition sparked a turnaround for generations of Māori who were beaten

in schools for speaking their language, and was the catalyst for that date becoming Māori Language Day – extended to Māori Language Week in 1975, an increase in Māori tuition across the country, and Māori becoming an official language in 1987. The one million number coincides with the Government strategy to have one million te reo Māori speakers in the country by 2040. - With NZ Herald

“I’m so pleased I did it. It can make such a difference. There are so many kidneys walking around.” Rochelle says the Ministry of Health are paying 100 per cent of her salary while she is off from her catering work at Greenacres Golf Club. They also paid for her flights and accommodation in Wellington. “This is something you can do to help just by taking some time. It needs to be put out there so people know. You might not be able to help someone in your family, but you might be able to help someone down the road.” Rochelle says she doesn’t mind that she doesn’t know who has her kidney. “I’m happy knowing there is someone out there who doesn’t have to have dialysis this week.” There are hundreds of people waiting for a healthy organ in New Zealand and anybody in good health with two normal kidneys may be able to give one of their own kidneys to another person. The Ministry of Health says a potential donor should have a genuine interest in donating and a compatible blood group with the person needing the transplant, and does not have to be a relative.

About 18 months ago local woman Rochelle Pont was on social media when a story popped up about someone needing a kidney transplant. The story told of how difficult life could be for people living on dialysis. “It struck a chord,” says Rochelle. So, she started investigating how to help. She did tests and research and then started seeing messaging about kidney transplants everywhere. “I thought ‘I’ve got two, I don’t need two, so let’s help someone”. She looked into doing a ‘kidney exchange’ programme for people who donated altruistically. It meant that someone in the recipient’s family would have to donate a kidney at some point in the future. But then she got a call. They had found someone who was a match. “A week out you think ‘oh my god’ it’s all getting real.” Rochelle was flown to Wellington and shown around the ward where she met people who were on dialysis. It confirmed to her that she was making the right decision.

Your Voice

Transport: I have been receiving enquiries in recent days about my position concerning the Nelson Future Access Study and have become increasingly concerned about misleading information circulating in the community about it. In particular, a flyer distributed to residents by the National Candidate for Nelson, Hon Nick Smith. To clarify, there is no plan by government to acquire property outright from Tahunanui residents or businesses. In a very few cases, a metre or so of peoples’ frontages might be impacted under the Priority Lanes option, which is one of three proposals put forward as part of the Nelson Future Access Study. The Nelson Future Access Study, which was started by the National government, has recently sought feedback from Nelson residents on possible long-term options for improving Nelson’s transport network. The study is led by Waka Kotahi / NZTA. This study is an independent one, where neither me nor the MP for Nelson have influence over the outcome. There is still significant work to be done including Waka Kotahi / NZTA evaluating the different options with support from a Project Reference Group. No final long-term decisions have been made. One of the three long-term options put forward was the use of priority lanes on State Highway 6

and Waimea Road. This proposal is not the same as the proposal to four-lane the coastal route. The proposal to four-lane the coastal route and Waimea Road was rejected by most people during the recent round of public feedback. The brochure provided to the public by Waka Kotahi / NZTA as part of the feedback stated that under the Priority Lanes project “there would be some impact on some properties, where a metre or so of frontage might be needed”. For the National candidate to suggest that up to 641 properties would be affected is very misleading. I am committed to ensuring that our transport network meets the needs of all Nelsonians, so that Nelsonians have transport choice and are safe when using the network. This includes my support for a shared walkway / cycleway on the seaward side of Rocks Road to unlock the potential of this world-class waterfront. Yours faithfully Rachel Boyack, Labour candidate for Nelson More transport I read with disappointment your full page ads from the Waterfront Association regarding the possibility of clearways around Rocks Rd. Nelsust has submitted against these too one of the lead traffic engineers in the current study has agreed that although peak hour priority lanes could be useful elsewhere, they are not needed around Rocks Rd. Perhaps more importantly, the most recent modelling done for the Transport Agency and shared

think that was an election year, funny that. Stop wasting money on more roads and focus on improving public transportation. Chellz Carter

Nayland College students Ronan Gridley, Hayden Rose, Mackenzie Dyer, Case Cant, Ryan Brash, Jared Clarke, Zac Puklowski, Shaun Campagnolo, Ethan Musika, Luca Varricchio and Chantel Vincent-Smith donated their business enterprise profits of $1,264 to the Nelson SPCA. The students sold a variety of food at school including cookies, sushi, sliders, wraps and waffles. The group says it wanted to pay the profits forward to a local charity with the SPCA the popular choice for the teenagers. Manager Donna Walzl says the donation means a lot and goes a long way to helping them raise and find the best possible homes for their animals. Photo: Jonty Dine to the Waterfront Association and other project reference group members is that if the Southern Link was ever built it would actually make congestion worse. So, if building the Southern Link would make congestion worse, what actually is the answer for Nelson’s congestion? Firstly, allowing more people to live closer to town so they don’t need to car commute. Secondly, making it safe for kids to get to school under their own steam. And thirdly, by other commuting options that are more attractive for more people. Of course, you make biking and e-biking more attractive for more people more of the time,

but also by making bus commuting cheaper, faster and just as convenient for many car trips. We want our city to be vibrant with people, not choked by cars. Peter Olorenshaw National promises Southern Link if elected: So how does this help or even work with Nelson City Council’s environmental/climate change policies? That money would be better spent providing free school buses - that alone would reduce traffic congestion. The 'Link' plan was halted by an environmental court ruling when it first raised its ugly head - I

Nelson Matters There has been a strong negative reaction in Tahunanui to the Labour candidate’s support for adding two lanes along Tahnunanui Drive and Rocks Road for clearways/priority lanes. This is not just an issue for this beachside community. Tahunanui Beach and Rocks Road are iconic Nelson assets that we must protect for future generations. Few cities are blessed with such a beautiful beach in close proximity to the city centre. The soft sand and sheltered Tasman Bay make it one of New Zealand’s best swimming beaches. I confess an emotional connection in that it is here I proposed to my wife Linley. There are evening sunsets where 100’s of Nelso-

nians walk this expansive beach. Other recreation enjoyed on Tahunanui Beach includes kayaking, paddle boarding, wind surfing and kite surfing. The rocky coastline along Rocks Road is as beautiful as the beach. During the April lockdown it was magical to walk, run or bike without hundreds of trucks rumbling past. It is also popular for swimming, fishing and sailing. The rock pools are favourite spots for children discovering marine life. I have been involved in many projects to enhance this coast with the Connolly’s Quay fishing platform, Nelson Yachting Club, Seafarer’s Memorial and Early Settlers Memorial. This coast is

also home for iconic facilities and businesses like Harbour Light Bistro, the Boat House, Styx, the Boat Shed and Guyton’s Fish Shop. These will all be put at risk under this four laning plan. The strongest reaction has come from the many homes and businesses who would have frontage taken under the Public Works Act to accommodate the additional lanes through Tahunanui and also on Waimea Road. There is also a real concern about the loss of on-street parking and the increased difficulty getting in and out of their property with four lanes of traffic. I also have major concerns over safety. Clearways are where during peak hours like 6.30am-

As Richmond grows at its current rate with the additional supermarkets, cinema, petrol stations and schools it will become more self-contained. Fewer people will need to travel between Nelson and Richmond. Problem solved, no changes to the roads required. Darren Meer

With Richmond and the Waimea Plains growing as they are, this road isn't going to do anything but clog Annesbrook roundabout, Richmond deviation, and the Lower Queen St intersection even more. Reduce vehicles and increase public transport. Arnie Raddock How many elections has National ‘promised’ roads or ‘bridges’ and not delivered? Rebecca Glen About time. Get on with it already. William Patterson

Over 40 years of the Southern Link promises. Not needed as it’s not New York. Pollution can drift away in the open sea air of Tahuna, interrupting only the rich latte brigade rather than asphyxiating poor school children in the Victory valley. Niels Zindel

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

9.30am and 3.00pm-6.00pm parking is prohibited. The problem is that often cars are mistakenly parked, creating chaos. The Clearway outside the Tahunanui shops a decade ago failed for this reason. NZTA also experimented with priority lanes and clearways on State Highway 1 north of Wellington but they failed. They are now building their inland route, the $1 billion Transmission Gully due for completion next year. There is no question that Nelson and Richmond has growing problems of traffic congestion but sacrificing Tahunanui and Rocks Road is the wrong answer. NZTA says it is the least resilient option to climate change and it

costs $80 million more than the inland route. The Tahunanui Business and Citizens Association have out of concern, organised a public meeting to update residents this Thursday at 7.30pm at the Community Centre. I hope all Nelsonians will oppose this damaging plan for our beach and coast. Tahunanui Beach and Rocks Road are jewels in Nelson’s crown. Four lanes of traffic including thousands of trucks each day will ruin it. The right vision for this area is a boulevard with restrictions on heavy traffic and this space maximised for walking, cycling and coastal recreation. Advert.

All men over 50 and those over 40 with prostate cancer in the immediate family absolutely should get simple, painless annual checks from their GP’s. If the GP doesn’t offer, men should definitely ask! Nelson/Tasman has a very active Prostate Cancer Support Group and welcomes men newly diagnosed (pre treatment), or with longstanding disease (post treatment), to learn how to best survive/manage their conditions. current and new members and their support personnel. It’s people also help at any time required outside of the normal meeting times. The foundation’s support networks are mostly made up of men who have had prostate cancer and Bill Fergie is the contact for Prostate Cancer Foundation Nelson. He has terminal prostate cancer (because of late diagnosis) and many adverse side effects from treatments, which he would

not have had with an early, and probably curative, diagnosis. His group gives men support, questions to ask specialists so they can make the best treatment decisions, or if treatment has already been successful, or unsuccessful, how to minimise side effects and help extend their lives - often for a very long time. Any concerns, ring Bill anytime 03 544 8635 or 021 062 0427 or nelson@prostate.org.nz

After nearly two years of delivering the Nelson Weekly, Zane van Ham has almost reached his saving goals. “I started delivering the paper because I wanted to buy a full suspension mountainbike. I have to put half of what I earn into a school account, but the other half goes into savings for the bike. The 13-year-old Broadgreen Intermediate student is the paper’s Deliverer of the Month. He was nominated by delivery manager Karl Hadfield. He delivers 300 papers around the Quarantine Rd and Annesbrook Dr area every Wednesday, with help from his mum, Karina. “It takes about an hour and a half, then there’s a quick stop at the Black Cat for a pie. After he’s done, he then heads off to rugby training. Zane says the papers are dropped off to his house at 6:15am on Wednesday mornings, so they can get a head start on folding them before school. He says it’s been a good first introduction to the workforce.

BLUE SEPTEMBER

3500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually in New Zealand and over 600 die from it. It is not widely known that Prostate Cancer kills as many men as does breast cancer women and it is the 3rd equal cancer killer in NZ . Sadly every year more men than ever are getting prostate cancer, so men and their supportive wives and partners definitely need to make themselves aware of signs of potential disease and the checking and screening tests available from their doctor. Early detections usually lead to cures and late detections very often do not.

From humble beginnings 11 years ago, Nelson-based business Switch Lighting has evolved to become New Zealand’s leading manufacturer of LED lighting solutions. Jon Maunsell, who comes from an electronics background, and mechanical engineer Gerard Woods began working together in 2008. “We met together over a beer, then started our business in a garage,” says Gerard. “Jon had an idea for LED lights, but he needed help with the design and sales, so our two skill sets came together. We then started going to home and garden shows around the country, educating people about LED lighting technology and from there the business grew. Here we are, 11 years later, in an amazing building with 30 employees, designing and manufacturing our own high-tech lighting products for local, national and international suppliers.”

It’s been two weeks since Switch Lighting moved into their new building at 107 Bolt Road. “It’s our 3rd premises; we’ve gone from renting some space which was 60 square metres, then we had an old building down the road which was 600 square metres with 8 shipping containers for our componentry, and now we’re in an 1800 square metre building which is spacious and modern with lots of workshop and designer space, great offices, a boardroom and reception area, plus a showroom for customers to view our products.” Gerard says Justin Candace and the team from Scott Construction have done an outstanding job. “They went over and above, having recladded and rewalled it, so we basically have a new building. We really appreciate what’s been accomplished. The building fits the purpose – it matches the qual-

It’s also a nice environment for our team to work in and for international guests and suppliers to come to.” Gerard says, although it has its challenges, employing people

is extremely rewarding. “We are proud to employ an awesome team of locals who are enjoying themselves and who want to come to work. The new building is a great place to be – our old smoko room

was pretty ‘pokey’ but now we have this beautiful space with a nice outdoor area.” Gerard says looking after their ‘own village’ is part of the company’s philosophy. “We like to give back to the community, so we do a

lot of small sponsorship for organisations such as The Cancer Society and many other local charities.” Over the years, the team at Switch Lighting have worked hard to develop the ‘right light.’ Today the company produces a wide variety of efficient, energy-saving LED products which contain no mercury (like CFL bulbs), turn on instantly and provide bright warm light. “Our LED lights are robust, they have a long life span, they’re ‘dimmable’ and don’t need to be changed.” They are also simple to install and can easily be retrofitted to replace your existing lighting. “LED provides 80 percent energy savings over traditional light sources, plus you’ve got long life if you buy a good quality product, which comes down to good electronics. “So, here in Nelson, we design circuit boards and the optics that go into the products. We buy in the LED chip; we use Japanese LED’s – Citizen electronics. “ Switch Lighting has come a long way in the last decade, having established a strong presence in New Zealand and a solid reputation overseas. “We distribute our products throughout New Zealand and around the globe in countries

In 2019, Switch Lighting successfully secured a deal to supply 15,000 units throughout all the cabins of The Iona, P&O largest-ever cruise ship. Last year, Switch Lighting’s achievements were rewarded by NZ Trade Group which named it ‘Supplier of the Year 2019’ (2nd most preferred supplier), and in 2014, the local company won the Product Award at the IES ANZ Lighting Design Awards. Switch took out the Innovation Award at the Nelson Tasman Chamber Business Awards in 2013, it was named the 27th fastest-growing company in 2015 and the

fastest-growing manufacturer in Canterbury and Upper SI in 2016 and 2017. Adding to its successes, Switch Lighting can also proudly state that it was the first lighting company to manufacture LED lights in NZ, the first to achieve IC-F classification and Energy Star accreditation, and the first company to manufacture a fully-sealed tilt luminaire. Although co-owner Gerard Wood’s background is in mechanical engineering, he has a ‘business mind,’ so these days his role is more about business management and sales. “We have slowly grown the sales team, and the engineering and production teams, so now we’ve got stores and inventory.” In fact, Switch is currently advertising for a store person and production person, so if you’re interested,

Simple, affordable IT services for small businesses Local IT professional Rick Manson, who has over 30 years’ experience in his field, is passionate about helping small to medium businesses grow. Rick, who co-owns MySales with his wife Asami, previously worked for a couple of large IT companies and lived in Japan for a while before returning to Nelson. “I got involved in internet-based products such as e-commerce sites but I got bored with that, so I went back to doing IT which is what I enjoy,” says Rick. “I started ‘MySales’ to help SMEs with 3-15 employees or very small businesses, which aren’t very well looked after. I provide effective strategies and products which don’t cost the earth. It can be simple things like having an email domain with your name on it which can professionalise your business.” Rick says small businesses often don’t want to deal with a large computer company because they think it’s going to cost them ‘an arm and a leg’, and they’re right – it will!” MySales has a fantastic ‘Domain and Email Starter Pack’ available for only $9.99 per month, with free remote setup on your devices. You will receive a personalised domain, email ac-

counts, 5 GB Mailbox capacity per account, webmail access and more. MySales also provides affordable online backup for small to medium businesses. “Internet security is a real issue and ransomware is particularly bad,” says Rick. “Recently, an ex-customer got hit with ransomware and they couldn’t recover their data because they didn’t have online backup. Another customer who went to see a large IT company said they wanted a ‘ridiculous’ price for backup. So I had a look and found a system which I built up for him, then I realised it would be great for a lot of people.” Rick says many businesses don’t realise what they need to backup, what’s important, what can’t be recovered and what they don’t need to backup. MySales can provide fully automated backups for people – 25 GB, 50 GB, 100 GB with easy data recovery, and it has 1, 3 or 5 daily scheduled plans available. “I provide safe secure local backup from only $13.95 per month. So it’s very affordable.” To find out more, visit www.mysales.co.nz or phone Rick on 027 370 5983.

The Mums and Bubs Circuit Class kicks off at the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre at the end of the month. The idea was sparked by local mum Jenny Hunter, who has a three-monthold daughter, Nellie. “I live in this community and want to see our young families becoming more connected,” she says. “With Covid-19 there has been no antenatal classes and not many opportunities for new mums to meet each other.” She took the idea to the centre, with manager Gareth Cashin eager to support it. Māori rugby has resurgence in region

“It is looking more promising; we have a strong contingent of kaumātua supporting the teams as well as families.” Barney hopes to carry this momentum down through the junior ranks. “To bring our younger Māori up through the game, kids in sport stay out of court.”

Jonty Dine Local kaumātua are leading a resurgence of Māori rugby in the region. Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Maui Māori Rugby board chairman Barney Thomas is at the forefront of a strategy to strengthen Māori rugby across Top of South. Having grown up and played most of his footy in Marlborough, Barney was seen as the perfect candidate to unite Nelson and Marlborough. “There is a lot of history between Nelson and Marlborough and if we are to move forward as a region there is only one way we can do that, together.” Part of the new strategy will see Māori players from both regions representing the Top of the South. “This won’t just be about who turns up on the day anymore, and we will ensure coaches, managers, and physios are all available.” Not only has there been a shift to a more professional environment for the men, there have also been initiatives implemented to improve the women’s and junior games. “We hold wānanga for younger ones at the marae and talk about cultural issues

from.” The committee will also ensure there are sufficient funds available for trips. “Last year there was a tournament in Invercargill, so I went to the treasurer to find out how much money there was, we had $6.50.” Barney and his committee helped raise the $45,000 for the year and then took three sides down south, with the women making the final. He says the project has continued to develop.

Santa Cruz helps fund new mountainbike track Staff Reporter Global mountainbike company Santa Cruz has agreed to co-fund a new 3000m Fringed Hill trail, due to start construction in November this year. The PayDirt grant to Nelson Mountain Bike Club (NMTBC) of around $37,000 will offset investment from Nelson City Council in the new trail. Council included over $500,000 of funding for new mountainbike trails in the Long Term Plan 2018-28. Some of the trails are marked for the upcoming Enduro World Series event, initially due to be held in April 2021, but now postponed until April 2022. The combination of new trails and an upcoming international mountainbike event drew the attention of Santa Cruz Bicycles who invited NMTBC to apply to their PayDirt fund. Council’s sports and recreation committee chair Tim Skinner welcomed Santa Cruz’s investment in Nelson’s mountainbiking community. “Securing this funding is a win-win situation for Nelson’s mountainbiking community. The sponsorship recognises that Nelson’s mountainbiking is world class and the investment results in a saving for council’s Long Term Plan that will enable improvements in other areas of the mountain biking network.”

New funding will go towards building a new mountainbike track in Nelson. Photo: Sven Martin. Mel Schroder, chair of NMTBC, says the grant is the fulfilment of one of NMTBC’s goals for holding an Enduro World Series in Nelson, which was to secure further investment in mountainbike infrastructure for its members. “Even before we hold the event, the community will get to see the benefits thanks to the Santa Cruz PayDirt grant."

Santa Cruz will use the new trail for some of their mountainbike marketing during 2021, and their branding will be included on trail signage, as is the practice with other sponsors. Founded by Santa Cruz Bicycles in 2019, PayDirt funds recreational mountainbiketrail opportunities worldwide. Nelson is the only southern hemisphere grant recipient.

Mako kick off season in style

Heading into their first match of the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup, most of the talk centred on the Mako’s supercharged back division and the capers they were expected to cut. However, it was the Tasman forwards who paved the way for their 41-24 victory over Counties Manukau on Saturday evening. Next up for the defending premiership champs is a date with Northland in Blenheim on Friday night.

Waimea front rowers Stacey Davis, Stephani Mitchell, Anna Bradley and Louise Nalder have all been selected for the Mako women. Photo: Jonty Dine.

After dominating the Nelson club rugby season, the Waimea women’s front row is looking to take the fight to the Farah Palmer Cup. Stacey Davis, Stephani Mitchell, Anna Bradley and Louise Nalder are looking to shed their provincial rugby tag of “the cute little sisters”. “We want to bring it to them, we want teams to be worried to play us, we want them scared,” Stephani says. The women say they plan to combat the size of the

North Island teams with ‘mongrelism’. “It takes a bit of attitude, we aren’t as big, so we will make up for it that way,” says skipper Anna. Tasman managed just two wins from nine last season, but with former Black Fern Mel Bosman now at the helm there is an air of confidence around the team. “It has been the best build-up we have had,” says Stacey. The women were part of a rampant Waimea side which defended its Tasman Trophy title, scoring 334 points in just six games and conceding only 25.

They say more structure and direction has enabled the players to prosper. They have also benefitted from the women’s game gaining more recognition within the club, as Anna and Stacey were recently presented with centurion blazers. “The girls are taking it more seriously and there is a really positive culture around bettering yourself as a rugby player,” says Stephani. The players were rewarded for their dominance this season with no less than 12 Waimea players making the Mako squad.

After 11 years of playing together in various combinations, this season marks the first time the four will all feature in the same Mako side. “We have been together for a long time and know how each other plays which I think helps,” says Anna. She says the trust they have allows them to be honest and push each other. The women are also close friends outside of rugby and, like all good front rowers, most of their off-field activities together involve food. “We don’t party, we just eat.”

Seasons start! Dominik Berghamer Spring is here and the water is finally getting warmer. 14 degrees is still not a lot and the snapper are probably another month away from coming into the bay. The fishing reports from around D’Urville Island indicate that less fish are being caught which could mean that some snapper are on the move already. The fishing in the bay (I tried from the shallows out to 45 metres) is still the same: vast amounts of spiny dogs and some gurnard in between. Large schools of baitfish of all sizes attract dolphins, seals and birds alike – just no other fish. Off the lighthouse huge schools of yellow eyed mullets turn the water brown since several weeks, they are either feasting on the larvae of another species or spawning themselves. Mullets make great bait and – if you can’t catch any other decent fish – you can even eat them, they are quite tasty!
