Crowds have lift off
For the first time in weeks, crowds formed en masse to celebrate the Tasman Mako. Since August 12 and Nelson returning to Level 2, crowds have not been permitted to gather. However, come Saturday thousands came to Trafalgar Park to watch the Mako take on Waikato – and they weren’t disappointed with the performance. The Mako came away with the win 34-17. Views Lifestyle Village is almost complete - however, it is not yet known when the associated new traffic lights will be operational. The work, which began in late 2018,
is happening near Station Reserve, 350m north of Beatson Rd. The project has been the bane of commuters of the busy network with road cones and single lanes
being seemingly ever present. Those road cones have now been removed from Waimea Rd and contractor Kevin Blair says the project is on track for a late October completion.
“It’s been pretty good really - it’s been a big job but it’s all falling into place.”

His Christchurch-based company, KB Contracting, are building the new road which will connect Waimea Rd with the village and the Tasman Heights subdivision. Because the new road will cross the Railway Reserve, Nelson City Council are funding and constructing an underpass to allow cyclists and pedestrians to safely use the pathway. The roof of the 4m wide underpass has been installed, and work is now well underway to fill in around the structure. “It [the underpass and road] should be finished around the same time, around the end of next month. While they are finishing off the underpass, we can complete the road,” says Kevin. He adds that the road will need to be accepted by council before

Hunters to get better access of reserves Sara Hollyman Reporter
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson City Council has bowed to public pressure to let hunters have better access of a large swathe of public reserves. A pest-culling operation which had planned to close a large part of Nelson’s public reserves over the school holidays will now been staggered to allow for improved access. The annual pest control is now in its third and final year of a contract between Nelson City Council and an out-of-town professional hunting company. The operation has been conducted in the Maitai and Roding River catchments, with the aim to restore forest health in an area that is home to one of Nelson’s largest intact forest ecosystems. In 2018, the hunters culled 177 goats and deer from around 4700ha of public land at a cost of $26,066. In 2019, another 160 ungulates were removed costing another $22,871. This year council has been warned to prepare for increased helicopter time which is likely to mean a higher cost. Nelson City Council group manager environmental management, Clare Barton,
says the professional hunters are “time and cost-effective, and very efficient”. The 2019, post-operation report from the contractor, Trap and Trigger, says they had hoped reserve access for recreational hunters might improve and they would observe fewer animals in areas that can be easily accessed by hunters. “However, what was observed this year turned out to be the opposite. There were more deer and pigs in these areas, almost as if recreational hunting was non-existent. “We would encourage any means for generating more recreational hunting within the operational area in the hope that it will help with control efforts while seeing the wild game resources utilised.” Council group manager community services Roger Ball says recreational hunting in the Maitai and Roding reserves is allowed by a permit system. “There are trade-offs between the cost of the oversight of recreational hunting to keep risks down, and the number of hunters which gives more chance of removing animals,” he says. But members of New Zealand Deerstalkers Association’s
Nelson branch says they have made multiple attempts to gain access for their members to no avail. “We were told to contact the caretakers and we did that; one never returned our messages, the other basically told us ‘no thanks, we have enough’,” says a member who asked not to be named. Clare Barton says, while recreational hunters do assist with controlling the pest animal populations, a more systematic annual control is still needed to achieve a significant reduction in pest numbers and support the long-term survival of our forests. Access to the area was originally planned to be closed for everyone, including recreational hunters, between 28 September and 9 October because of health and safety requirements while the professional hunters work. However, council is now working on a staged approach to the hunting programme to minimise impacts on recreational activities in the area, especially during the school holidays. “We appreciate there could be added demand for access during the holidays in light of Covid-19 restrictions,” says Roger.

Immigration to deport 10-year-old NEWS with special needs Air NZ pilot lets
female passenger travel in cockpit: An Air New Zealand pilot has been “reminded of the correct procedure” after inviting an “intoxicated” female passenger to travel in the cockpit of a Wellington to Nelson flight. The woman travelled in the “jump seat” of the Q300 plane in February. An Air New Zealand spokesperson said the complaint was investigated earlier in the year and the Civil Aviation Authority have stated that they are satisfied with the investigation carried out.

A ten-year-old Filipino girl will have to wait until after the election to find out whether she will be deported, because of her special needs. An appeal has been made after the girl, who the Nelson Weekly has agreed not to name, was ordered to leave the country last week. However, according to the appeals process, a decision will not be reached until after October 17 at the earliest. The girl’s parents both have valid work permits but the girl’s student visa was denied due to a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD, requiring an hour a day of learning support. Despite a desperate plea and an offer to pay for their daughter's treatment of $120 per week, the parents appeal was rejected, meaning as of September 24, the young girl has been here unlawfully. The girl's mother says it has been an incredibly stressful situation, causing her sleepless nights and an overwhelming sense of guilt. "We want to stay together as a family, it has been like emotional torture." While her daughter faces deportation, the woman's son has been permitted to stay. "It will split our family." The mother says she cannot afford to move back to the Philippines while she also can't send her daughter alone.
A 10-year-old Filipino girl with special needs has been ordered to leave the country. Photo: Jonty Dine. The girl says she wants to stay in New Zealand and doesn't understand why she has to leave. "It's cool, I love my school and my friends." The New Zealand Immigration service wrote on September 1 to the girl saying they were declining her application for the reconsideration of her student visa because the girl was receiving Ongoing Resourcing Scheme support. The family has lived in Nelson for the past two years, the father working for a specialist aviation company and her mother as an aged carer. Nelson MP Nick Smith says he
was appalled by the order and says the decision needs to be urgently reviewed. “She cannot return alone and effectively this is telling this family to go because their daughter has additional educational needs.” He says this child should not be put in the position of being in New Zealand illegally and given threeweeks’ notice to leave. The girl's principal says she is a beloved student. The principal is hopeful for a compassionate result considering the family is prepared to pay the extra costs for their daughter. Immigration NZ were unable to comment on the case.

Rainbow’s ski season shortest on record Tracy Neal of RNZ The ski season in NelsonMarlborough has ended as the shortest on record. A lack of snow in the subalpine Rainbow Range above St Arnaud cut the number of days it was open from an average 72 each year, to 23 days this winter. Rainbow Ski Area committee chair Mark Unwin said it had been a disappointingly short season, especially with this week's snow to coincide with the start of the school holidays. "We have closed, unfortunately. The staff have gone - we've shut up and put things away for the summer. "Unfortunately for us, we had to make a call and this weekend's storm is about a week late." Rainbow Ski Area is a club field, run by an incorporated society. A volunteer committee employs a manager to run the field above Rainbow Station, near the Nelson Lakes National Park. "It's run as a commercial operation but the club owns the assets on the field, and we have a licence to operate from the Department of Conservation."
Rainbow Ski Field has struggled with snow this season. Photo: Supplied. Unwin said, it was financed by commercial partners and revenue from skiers, including season passes from members. He said they would dip into reserve funds to cover this year's costs, and management was confident the field would open next winter, with the support of its members. "We hope this is just a one-off bad season. We do have them from time-to-time which is why we put away a reserve fund, and we'll be starting next season full of hope." Unwin said like southern ski
fields, Rainbow was already planning for future mountain activities but with less snow. "We opened last summer for general activities and we are looking at different walks and accommodation up in the mountains, whether for education or family groups being able to utilise our facilities, to experience the alpine environment. "It's absolutely something we need to look at - that, and our investment in snow-making are the two key things for Rainbow, long-term."

Bowaters driving into future after 75 years Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When Raymond Bowater came back from WW2, he was a qualified mechanic looking for a way to provide for his family. It was 1945 and he had four boys and a girl. What he and his friend Bill Clifford decided on was creating a motor garage. That one garage grew into 16 franchises of car dealerships in its heyday. Now, 75 years on from that first garage, the family and the Bowater Motor Group are reflecting on how far they have come. “He started from scratch,” says Raymond’s son, Rodney, who took over the business. “He started from nothing to servicing cars. That’s where it all started. You can imagine a guy coming back from the war and thinking
‘what am I going to do?’” Raymond says he and his siblings were raised with a competitive spirit that saw them play sports all across the region and cemented the importance of being involved with the community into the company. He says that, while he was the son that was tasked with the running of the business after his father, all decisions were made with the family involved. “We made decisions that we all agreed on and if we didn’t all agree, we didn’t do it. We have always had a close relationship as a family and valued that extremely over the years.” Those family values led to Raymond’s sons Tony and Chris taking over respective parts of the company. Raymond says that was a huge priority – for unity of the family.

Rodney Bowater is the patriarch of the Bowater Motor Group having taken it over from his father who started it in 1945. Photo: Charles Anderson. “There is so much divide and destroy out there, these days. Unity is a value of ours.” But at its core, Raymond says that the company has always been about service. “Very simply, we supply all your motoring needs – that includes being there to serve you. Not just, ‘now we have sold you a car and you are history’. We intentionally go out of our way to provide that service. We don’t take it for granted and never have.” Now the company has the Toyota
franchises in Nelson, Richmond and Motueka, the Hyundai, Isuzu and Renault franchises, a Mag and Turbo in Nelson and a Caltex in Motueka. Raymond says the company wants to continue to be innovative and adaptable, that includes moving with what customers want. It might not have been on Raymond’s mind when he started the business 75 years ago, but the group is now thinking that autonomous and environmentally-friendly vehicles
will increasingly be the future. That will inform the sorts of cars they sell and how they sell them – whether its in person or virtually. “The world has changed, and the speed of change is significant, you can only imagine what the next 10, 15 or 50-years’ time is going to be like.” Regardless, Rodney says the company has a mantra that will take them through that period: “A history we are proud of, a present we are committed to and a future we are certain.”

Stoke students travel through time for 175th Locally Owned and Operated

Past pupils and staff have reminisced on their time at Stoke School during the 175th celebration of the school’s opening. Edith Mills attended Stoke School from 1947-50 along with four siblings and says there have been “huge changes”, but fondly recalled memories from 70 years previous. “We didn’t have a uniform and there were only four or five classrooms, all our tech work was off-site, the bus would come and pick us up on a Friday and take us into Nelson. It was the highlight of the week, really. Back then women did cooking, and men did woodwork, of course. “There was a rule you weren’t supposed to give the boys your cooking on the bus when you were coming home because they would make a mess, but sometimes that rule sort of got forgotten.” As part of the birthday celebrations a time capsule, which was buried in 1999, was dug up and opened on Thursday. Lesa Te Maari was there to retrieve her contents from
Former Stoke School student Lesa Te Maari with a letter she wrote for the time capsule in 1999. Photo: Sara Hollyman. the capsule along with those of her younger sister and her cousin, who passed away 11 years ago. “I had to make sure I got here because it’s pretty special.” Lesa says she doesn’t remember much about what she wrote about on Tuesday, 16 November 1999, just that it was about her day at school and what kind of things they did after school. Her letter was easy to spot
with a photo of her 10-yearold self-attached to the top corner. “I’m not sure what I’ll do with it now, but I’ll keep it somewhere safe.” Stoke School principal Sarah Davies says it was great to be able to celebrate the milestone, despite Covid-19 downscaling the planned events. “It’s exciting for us because we are about to undergo
some renovations, so understanding the whole journey and process and history of the school has been really special.” Sarah says, next term pupils will put down another time capsule to mark the quartoseptcentennial anniversary and continue to preserve the history of New Zealand’s second oldest, continually-running public school.
Jacinda Ardern and Labour have led a decisive health response to COVID-19 that saved lives and positioned us for a strong economic recovery. Labour has a plan to create jobs and upskill workers to get the economy moving again. We have invested in training and education for people to provide the skills we need for the recovery. Our $1.6 billion Trades and Apprenticeships Training Package will provide opportunities for New Zealanders of all ages to receive trades training. It’s been great to meet Nelson people taking advantage of these opportunities. Like the young dad in Stoke who has signed up for a free apprenticeship to improve his family’s circumstances while adding to the skills we need in Nelson to help our economy bounce back. Let’s keep Nelson moving by voting for a Labour Government that has a clear plan to rebuild our economy and create jobs.

MP debate kicks off this weekend Staff Reporter
Nelson mayor Rachel Reese cuts the ribbon to open the new WW1 memorial with Peter Millward. Photo: Jonty Dine.
The much-anticipated Great Nelson Weekly MP Debate takes place this Sunday after being delayed due to Covid-19. The event marks the final chance that candidates of the four major political parties will get to spar ahead of the election on October 19. Editor Charles Anderson says the debate is unique in that it is not just a podium for candidates to stand on and deliver their platform. “Instead, we structure it so each candidate can challenge and be challenged on the points they make. This can put them on the spot rather than on the tried and true campaign slogans we are all familiar with.” The debate, which is hosted by The Workshop on New St, also gives a different atmosphere to all other candidate events. “Politics and pubs is a tried and true combination that we think gives voters in Nelson a much better idea of who they might be picking on election day.” While The Workshop has limited space and is first in first served, the event will also be livestreamed to the Nelson Weekly’s Facebook audience – allowing anyone around the region, country or world, to tune in. The Great Nelson Weekly MP Debate will be held at The Workshop on October 4 at 7.30pm. Entry is first come, first served.
The WW1 Wall of Remembrance featuring 3700 names. Photo: Jonty Dine.
New names honoured on remembrance wall Jonty Dine A small team of dedicated members has ensured the sacrifices made by all Nelson WW1 veterans will be remembered. Years of research has resulted in a further 1200 names added to the WW1 Wall of Remembrance at Founders Heritage Park. The new tribute to our fallen was unveiled in a ceremony attended by members of the RSA, Nelson City Council and families of lost veterans. The wall, originally a project by the Nelson Provincial Museum to commemorate the WWI centenary in 2014, spent three years at the museum before it was moved to
Founders Heritage Park in 2017. Peter Millward, who was director of the museum when the wall went up, said people were encouraged to mark the names of their relatives who served, and note any names missing from the wall. This led to hundreds of new names being added and a project for Peter, who retired from the museum in 2015. Peter and historian Mike Carnahan spent the past five years checking all the additional names and after a final full cross check during the Covid-19 lockdown, another 1200 were confirmed for the wall, bringing the total number to 3700 names. The addition of the missing names
reunited six sets of brothers who were not commemorated together because they had enlisted from different towns. “Imagine how that would have been for their families, to have one son remembered and not the other,” says Peter. Councillor and community services committee chair Matt Lawrey says Peter, Mike and the other historians who worked on the project have done something special for the city. “It’s vital that we remember our war dead but it’s also important we honour all those who served alongside them and supported them. They all made huge sacrifices and it’s certain that they all suffered in one way or another.”

Students looking after Te Wairepo Kate Russell Reporter

Students at Victory Primary School are passionate about cleaning up the stream that flows through their school. So, they decided to write a book about it - as well as a letter to Nelson’s mayor and city councillors. Te Wairepo awa (York stream) is a major tributary of the Maitai River and the school’s Mahi Tahi class has been learning about freshwater and stormwater through the ‘Drains to Harbour’ programme. This is run by Tasman Bay Guardians and funded by council. However, teacher Victoria Richardson and her class felt that more could be done to raise awareness of the stream to keep it and its inhabitants healthy, so they have worked together to publish ‘Our Te Wairepo Number Poem’. “The children were really motivated to start spreading messages to their wider whanau and community,” she
says. The book has been illustrated by a group of junior students and will soon be available to borrow from the public library. Victoria says they have also been learning about the history of the school land and the stream. “We discovered there was a lot of rubbish in the stream which made us all feel quite sad.” Student Lung Ning Ching said she would “like to see no rubbish” in the stream. “There were a lot of chip and noodle packets.” The students have also been “challenged” to not bring any plastic in their lunchboxes. As another action, several students also helped to type up a letter to send to council, asking if more could be done to protect the stream. Students said they were concerned about fish spawning habitat and worried that the concrete in the stream could reduce their ability to breed, and they also asked if the banks of the stream could be enhanced.
Filco’s carpark was the start of the Top of the South Harley Riders rescue helicopter ride last Saturday. Over 200 riders turned up and over $3500 was raised by the event. The money will be donated to the rescue helicopter to meet ongoing costs in providing the necessary service. Although organised by the Harley club, bikes of all brands attended and the large turnout reflected the good weather on the day. Photo: Steve Page.

Opinion
Your Voice Election: The ‘bold’ and ‘farmer friendly’ economic promises Judy and Gerry are touting to get votes are surely as old and tired as they appear. Some of us remember what happened the last time National was given charge of navigating New Zealand through a serious global recession. Judy and Gerry were both senior members of the cabinet that agreed a plan of guess what? Reducing taxes, mainly on the TOP personal tax rate. While this presumably suited National Party sponsors, the ‘policy’ was quickly found to have failed. There wasn’t enough cash coming in to run the country. To meet the loss, and despite the plentiful promises to the contrary, the rate of GST was raised from 12.5 per cent to 15 per cent, so it seemed that everybody else ended up paying for the tax cuts for the wealthy. In contrast, the present and recent past Labour led MMP Governments have given a helping hand to all of us. Who can dispute the legacy and benefits of Kiwibank and Kiwisaver and all the other social reforms? And who cannot support the careful and caring path being navigated for all of us through the worldwide Covid calamity by this present Labour led MMP Government? supportive of making it more people friendly. I wonder if they might actually represent the silent majority. Dennis Goodman Just keep as is so people can park outside the place they want to go to. No to multi storey car parks - you can go to Auckland for those. Fionna Heiton There needs to be a proper parking situation before the city centre can be adapted to a more walking friendly zone. Elderly can't park five minutes away and then walk back in to town like most people usually have to do if they aren't lucky. Sarah W I've visited Nelson a few times and absolutely hate the city area. It's nearly impossible to find a park, making it difficult to do shopping or visit cafes. I use Blenheim now if I have shopping to do and Picton is perfect for cafes. Might have to drive a bit to get there but beats driving round the block two or three times to find a park in Nelson. Jo Mason The parking problem is why people don’t shop in town because there is never enough. The green benches etc are a good idea in the fantasy world but in the real world it will kill town even more. Annette Mckenzie Why doesn't NCC work out a long-term solution
On Saturday, the annual Daylight Savings Ride took place which is run by the Top of the South Motorcycle Group to raise money for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. It was the biggest turnout that the event has had and the eighth ride that has taken place. This year the group of dozens of riders left from Filco Farm & Sport as it allowed more parking space. The helicopter crew were on hand but had to be called out to an emergency. However, intensive care paramedic Prue Young Still managed to get aboard a bike in support of a good cause. Photo: Supplied for Nelson's parking issue for starters? That's what I believe is creating the hesitance in many people to support a walking friendly town centre. I live in the Brook and because of health problems I have to drive and find parking when I go into town. There are many people in my situation. To prematurely bring up trials like this is asking for unnecessary friction. It's time to create a parking garage and turn at least one of the carparks into a multiuse green area. People en masse aren't going to hop on their bikes, electric or not, or walk to do
shopping. You would want us to spend time and stroll around town instead. Helen Black I work in the centre of town and I have lived in Nelson for most of my life. Limits to parking has been an ongoing issue for many years but many options and ideas have never been raised or looked at properly. A ‘park and ride’ spot between Richmond and Nelson, another level built above existing carpark areas. Having community spaces to enjoy is great but look at your demographic properly on a day
Nelson Matters I announced on Monday with Leader Judith Collins National’s commitment and timetable to build a new, larger and safer hospital for Nelson. The current hospital is deficient in three ways. Our population is growing and aging and the current 149 beds is insufficient. The main buildings are over 50 years old and not of the standard we need for patients and our dedicated doctors and nurses. The hospital is also earthquake prone. It is unacceptable that we would not have a functional hospital in the event of a major quake. I rewrote the earthquake prone building laws as Minister of Building in 2017 in response
to the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes. The required seismic assessments done in 2018 on Nelson Hospital show the Percy Burnett tower block is 33% of standard, the George Manson tower block and operating theatres are only 22% and the chimney tower just 20%. The law requires replacement or upgrading by 2028. This time frame will not be met if we do not get started soon. The current government has just announced millions to relocate MPs and Ministers offices in response to seismic issues with Bowen House at Parliament. This is a much newer building and has a much higher rating than Nelson Hospital. Our hos-
pital should have been given priority. Constructing a new Nelson Hospital is a massive task. It will be Nelson’s biggest ever building project. It is complicated by having to maintain health services throughout the rebuild. We need to get the detail right. National in the last Government built new hospitals in Rotorua, Waikato, North Shore, Golden Bay, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Burwood. We started construction in 2016 of Greymouth and Christchurch’s main hospital and in 2017 approved a new hospital for Dunedin. These three have all fallen behind schedule. The lessons from these projects is that they take years to plan
to day basis. Maybe closed off streets and beautiful areas to sit would work on sunny weekends and holidays, but day to day most just want to come into town to get what they want and leave. If shopping with small children, it’s get in get out as quick as possible. If you manage to have some town time without them, it’s shops and cafes, but not sitting around in the street. Our older/elder population (which is a growth industry in our region) already struggle with the parking setup in town and don’t want to be sitting around in the middle of the streets either. But between 3 - 5 pm weekdays, yeah the teenagers who hang around would probably love some new seating (but they probably won’t support local shops, just some international chain food stores). Rachael Bastion-Holmes
I didn't know of these ideas, but when I first came to Nelson I discovered that going into the CBD during the summer peak was an absolute nightmare because of those damned courtesy crossings where people just amble out in front of you, regardless of how close to the crossing the car is and cause traffic gridlock. So my thoughts have always been that Trafalgar St, especially between Bridge St and the Cathedral steps, should be turned into a pedestrian mall, especially during the summer. Lynley Boyd

and build. National’s timetable for a new Nelson Hospital is to consult with the community and hospital staff in 2021, do detailed design in 2022, complete consenting and contractor selection in 2023 and to complete the new hospital by 2027. It is tight but doable. It is a good time to be investing in infrastructure. National’s commitment is to rebuild on the current site. This is because it is well located close to the central city and other important services. There are no other large suitable sites available. There are also some assets on the existing site that can be retained. A key issue to resolve in the design stage will be improve park-
ing and may include a parking building. I was disappointed in the Nelson Labour candidate’s negative response to National’s hospital announcement. These huge projects often span different governments. I would welcome a similar commitment to Nelson from Labour. I will work with our Health Board and across all political parties to get the right result for Nelson. My objective is a new hospital that will meet our region’s health needs for the next half century and I will work with whomever to achieve it. Advert.

A vibrant multi-use studio in central Nelson could be facing closure if it can’t drum up more members and support. Studio One on Rutherford Mews is home to a collective of performers who offer classes ranging from belly dance, burlesque, pole, theatre, flow arts, yoga and improv. But despite “going really well” after opening mid last year, it could have to close its doors due to the effects of Covid-19. “We had a really nice membership, we were getting lots of hires - but then lockdown hit and a lot of our income stream just dried right up,” says member Elena Lowry. “Obviously, we’re still paying
to have a place to create, play and teach. We love it here and we don’t want to lose it.” To raise some funds, the studio has created a Givealittle page at givealittle.co.nz/cause/studioone-fundraiser and they are also holding a fundraising show on Saturday, 3 October at 8pm. “There will be pole, belly dance, flow arts and burlesque - a bit of everything. It’s a pretty stacked show in terms of performers,” says member Jasmine Turner. Tickets for the show are available from Eventfinda. Jasmine says, now we are at Alert Level 1, they are hoping people will feel like it’s safe enough to come out and try a class. “We want other people to know it exists - it’s here and we’re ready for you.” To find out more email studioonenelson@gmail.com

Spring weather can be unpredictable. Now is a great time to consider whether you are appropriately prepared should the weather cause an unexpected power outage. Things that will help you manage an unexpected outage include: z
A torch for each member of your household and extra batteries.
z
Either a fully charged cell phone, a landline phone that doesn’t require electricity, or battery backup if your landline phone is supplied by fibre.
z
A supply of water that isn’t dependent on an electric pump.
z
A means of cooking that doesn’t rely on electricity eg a BBQ or gas cooker.
z
A supply of matches or a lighter.
z
Instructions on how to manually operate your electrically operated garage door.
If a member of your household is medically dependent on electricity, you should also have: z
An established network of people you can call on for help and their contact details.
z
Knowledge of your medical equipment: » Does it have an audible “no power” alarm that will alert you to a power failure? » Does it have battery back-up or a standby source of power and for how long? » Do you know how to use the backup or standby equipment and are you confident that you could operate the equipment in an emergency?
If your power goes off, turn off any machines or appliances that you don’t want to unexpectedly start-up when the power is restored. This is especially important to remember if you leave your house during the power outage. Learn how to programme electronic devices such a freeview recorders and coffee machines with timers. If the power goes off while these are running, they may need to be reset after the power comes back on. Remember that the power can be restored at any time after any unexpected outage, so treat all lines, electrical installations and wiring as live. Lockdowns and Covid-19 has meant that the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust is down nearly $150,000. But while fundraising opportunities may have dried up this year, rescue missions have not. To the end of August this year, the trust has flown 327 missions. On average, the trust flies over 500 missions every year. This year, the helicopter has averaged 10 missions per week, with an average cost of $3,500 per mission. As of September, the crew has played a critical role in saving 326 lives. The charitable trust receives government funding, but only enough to cover around 40 per cent of their annual operational costs. NMRHT general manager Paula Muddle says that Covid-19 has meant that a lot of their fundraising opportunities disappeared this year. “We just couldn’t do events.” Now, local banking institution NBS are kicking off the Rescue Helicopter Appeal this October. The month-long appeal aims to
give a significant boost to the the Trust’s funding and shine a light on the lifesaving work that the Rescue Helicopter Trust does. NMRHT chief crewman Paul (Ernie) Bryant says ensuring the crew is safe is extremely important. “It’s not a job for everyone, hanging out with a winch 150 feet above ground,” he says. “We can be called to help anywhere, ending up in all sorts of environments, day and night. Safety gear for pilots and crew, including fire retardant clothing, all-terrain boots, flight suits, personal locator beacons, life vests and night vision goggles adds up to around $35,000 for each team member.” Ensuring that the crew are trained and meet regulatory requirements costs approximately $120,000 a year, according to the trust. Intensive care paramedic Prue Young says the while the service needs a lot of funding, but it is essential. “We always need more equipment and ongoing training if we are to do the best job we can for people. Funding allows us to be at peak condition, highly trained, with the
Matt McCrorie A string of significant donations over the last few weeks has got the Snowden’s Bush Trust feeling ‘extremely positive’ about reaching their fundraising goal. The group, which is aiming to buy the frontage of the Snowden’s Bush Reserve from the Anglican Diocese to save the land from being converted into housing, and preserve it for public use, has until February 2021 to raise $350,000 to buy the land. And thanks to some highprofile donations and grants in
the last month, they have just over $100,00 left to go. Trust member Annette Moorhead applied to Pub Charity, and just received a $30,000 grant. “It’s a big boost,” Annette says. Fellow trust member, Janice Gibbs, says that with the recent donations, the future of the land is looking promising. The Brightwater Horticultural Society has also donated $15,000, along with $5000 from Tasman Pine Forrest Ltd, and Ellis St Auto has donated a further $5000. “It’s looking promising,” says Janice.
Janice says it’s all about being positive. “I’m feeling positive that we will do it, one way or another, we will do it.” The trust has already recieved an extension of their original deadline by six months, due to the lockdown and the inability to raise funds. Work began on the Snowden’s Bush Trust in 2018, when Janice Gibbs approached Nelson MP Nick Smith about her concerns that the green space would be lost, and a group of residents came together to try and preserve the land.

'Remove Māori Ward laws that have embedded discrimination' Discriminatory laws placing unreasonable hurdles to Māori participation in local government must be urgently reformed, says Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese. In a meeting held on 22 September, Nelson City Council gave Mayor Reese their full support to write to central government urging amendments to the Local Electoral Act 2001 ensuring requirements for a Māori Ward are identical to a general Ward. The resolution came alongside a decision to follow Iwi Council Partnership advice to not set up a Māori Ward now and pursue alternative mechanisms for increased Māori involvement in decision-making. Currently, creating a Māori Ward can trigger a public ballot if demanded by five percent of electors. “This system makes it hard for Māori to gain representation at Council. We must fix legislation that has embedded discrimination at local government for too long,” says Mayor Reese. “No other ward faces the same challenge. If North Nelson petitioned for a ward, Council would decide and that would be it. Yet Māori effectively have to ask permission for representation, and then face a public vote that amplifies racist, uninformed viewpoints.” Council is advocating for the removal of sections 19ZA to 19ZG from the Local Electoral Act and for Māori Ward decisions to align with decisions about other wards.

The art on display was designed to teach the community how to pronounce the local street names and explain their meaning.
Tohu Whenua video – Waimarama and Aratuna Inspired by last year’s Tohu Whenua (sites and landmarks of significance) video series, we created a new video to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week on the Nelson City Council Facebook page. Check out the video to learn more about Waimarama and Kaituna, also known as Aratuna or Queens Gardens. Our region and our Tohu Whenua are rich in history. Learn more about their stories, the meaning behind their names and how to pronounce them.
Franklyn Street pedestrian refuge makes school walk safer A new pedestrian refuge on the busy Franklyn Street by Nelson College is the latest addition in a suite of road safety measures introduced by Nelson City Council. The refuge is part of Council’s wider plans to improve road safety across the City which has included: • Van Diemen Street kea crossing • Footpath improvements including kerb build outs at crossing points • Motueka Street pedestrian refuge • Variable speed limits outside most schools • Hampden Street West trial closure • Tahunanui Pathway project Transport safety advocate Clare Scott

approached Council about the Franklyn Street refuge after seeing too many near misses on the street. Council agreed on the importance of reducing risk to public safety at this high traffic area on Franklyn Street. Nelson City Councillor and Chair of Infrastructure Brian McGurk was pleased with the outcome and thanked the Nelson City Council’s transport team for their efforts. “Children should be able to ride or walk to school safely and this will make their journey a lot safer."

Intensification Action Plan aims to assist growth As more people seek to live in our Smart Little City, a new plan from Nelson City Council aims to help meet the demand for accommodation by supporting housing intensification in existing urban areas. Nelson’s Intensification Action Plan (IAP) was approved for inclusion in the draft Long Term Plan by Council on Thursday, 22 September. The IAP was borne out of the Nelson Tasman Future Development Strategy (FDS), a 30-year framework for urban growth, adopted by both Nelson City and Tasman District Councils last year. Mayor Rachel Reese said both documents were key to helping address Nelson’s current housing shortfall, using existing urban areas and greenfield (growth) areas. “House prices in Nelson and Tasman are some of the highest in the country, and we want to support those who already live here, as well as continue to attract and retain young people in our region. To do that, we need to plan how best to manage our housing needs, both now and into the future, and housing intensification has been identified as one of the ways to meet those needs.” The FDS anticipates at least 60% of Nelson’s future housing growth will be accommodated by housing intensification in the Nelson Urban Area, which covers Nelson, Richmond and Hope. The IAP looks at ways Council can encourage housing intensification of existing areas (brownfield) by ensuring processes and plans are streamlined. This is in recognition that intensification developments have a lower uptake than greenfield developments, although both play a role in meeting the city’s future growth needs. In addition to the IAP, Council has also approved a recommendation for a fund of $50,000 to be considered as part of the draft Long Term Plan to subsidise regulatory charges faced by developers converting commercial property in the city centre to residential. Road resurfacing season starts in October October signals the start of the summer roadworks programme in the Nelson/Tasman region. This work is vital to ensure our roads stay in good condition, their surface is protected and they are as safe as possible for all road users. Over the 2020/21 resurfacing season, which runs through to April, Council plans to resurface approximately 20 kilometres or 8% of local roads in our region. Council increases its road resurfacing activity at this time of year as the warmer temperatures combined with longer daylight hours and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface. Whilst we do our best to minimise disruption to road users, it is inevitable that some delays will occur and motorists are urged to take this into account when planning journey times. Most work will avoid the busy holiday travel periods but where traffic controls are in place, motorists are asked to always follow the speed limits and any instructions from road workers. If resurfacing work is planned near your property, you will be notified by letter drop closer to the time of sealing. Where work is planned to occur on our busier roads, traffic management and advanced warning will accompany the work.

Exciting new wholefoods, café and retail experience In the heart of Stoke, newly-opened business everyday goodness provides a fabulous wholefoods, café and retail experience all under one roof. Owners Wendy and Ian were on holiday in the South Island and they fell in love with Nelson. “We knew it would be the place we would move to,” says Ian. “We saw the Pantry Door and were pleased to find out it was for sale. It had offered traditional-style food, but we felt there was an opportunity to support the community, especially around plantbased food products.” The previous layout was a small café which was separated from the store, but the couple wanted to bring a new emphasis which was community-ori-
entated and provided for the growth in the vegetarian, plant-based market. So, they explored the idea some more, then covid hit. “Nevertheless, we kept planning and as soon as it went down to level 2 we got on a plane and came straight down here and took over the Pantry Door.” The couple didn’t try to change anything straight away, but instead listened to what the customers wanted. “The existing customer base wanted to keep the status quo, but a wider group of people could see the potential, said ‘yes the store needs to change and grow.’” Subsequently, the couple did a ‘massive’ store refit and new layout. “We made it a lot more open and visible, more welcoming and more community-based. We have a big centralised table, discreet tables for people to sit and talk, and a comfy ‘cosy corner’ for our customers who want a quiet moment.” The community table has been bringing groups into the café. “Recently we

The café and retail store backs on Strawbridge Square so there’s plenty of parking and easy access for disabled customers who frequent the premises. “Going into a wholefood store can be quite daunting, but we try to keep it simple. If you don’t have a container, we will supply one.” Ian and Wendy have a fantastic team onboard, who they encourage to come up with ideas and initiatives. “Marie loves photography so she’s

Arts Festival to light up the night Staff Reporter The Nelson Arts Festival kicks off tomorrow night at 5pm with Night Vision, when galleries will open late and performing artists will roam the streets. Night Vision is a free whānaufriendly event that is new to Nelson Arts Festival in 2020. It is inspired by the international phenomenon White Night (Nuit Blanc), where the city comes to life with art exhibitions, performances, interactive events, installations, and artists-in-residence - all happening in one energetic and transformative night. Look out for the Night Vision logo in the windows of participating venues and chalked on to the sidewalks, grab a map, and explore. InsideOut’s cast of colourful, dynamic characters will accompany crowds between Night Vision venues. Larger than life and full of funky
moves, this quirky cast will be brightening up Nelson’s streets. Many more Festival events are scheduled for the month of October, including the literarythemed Pukapuka Talks, which take place from 20-28 October. The varied and topical programme includes Our Grandfathers, a discussion about the fascinating novel written by Ian Trafford based on his grandfather's WWI diaries. During his childhood on a farm near Te Karaka, west of Gisborne, Ian Trafford’s father came home one day with his grandfather Alick’s secret First World War diaries. In August, that story made its way into the world as the novel, Into the Unknown, in which the war unfolds through Alick’s eyes. After the drama and tragedy of war comes the return home, and the efforts required to make a living while remaining steadfastly silent
about the traumas of those terrible years – an unseen fight that continued and affected generations to come. The story from the diaries was written on the couch, with lots of emotion, as if his old grandad, Alick, was sitting there as well. Ian, who lives in Marahau, will discuss Into the Unknown on stage at the Suter Theatre on Sunday 25 October at 3.30pm with fellow Nelson-based author William Moloney, whose 2015 novel The Battle of Messines Road was also based on his grandfather’s WWI diary. Pukapuka Talks have one double pass to Our Grandfathers to give away to the first person to email info@nelsonartsfestival.nz. Tickets are $16 (plus booking fee) and are available through EventFinda and on the Nelson Arts Festival website, www. nelsonartsfestival.nz, where you can find the full Festival programme.

5 simple rules to help you stay safe on the water: Before you go boating on our seas, lakes and rivers, get familiar with New Zealand’s Boating Safety Code. Five simple rules will help you to stay safe, no matter what kind of boat you use. 1. Life Jackets - Take them – Wear them. Boats, especially ones under 6m in length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in the water. 2. Skipper Responsibility - The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat. Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience.

October is Motorcycle Awareness Month and always signals the start of the warmer weather when the motorcycles emerge from winter hibernation and hit the roads. Statistically, over half of all motorcyclists will be getting their bikes out of the garage from this month on, after a winter break. Drivers, please bear this in mind and be aware that more motorcycles will be out and about. Now is the time to remember the saying ‘Look twice for motorbikes ‘. If you’re a rider, you need to check your gear and your bike before getting back out on the road to make sure that everything is ride ready. We want our local riders to be some of the best in the country, and that starts with taking advantage of some of the excellent training opportunities. The councils in Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough will subsidise any rider who attends a motorbike training, scooter training or refresher course taken by one of our experienced local providers. That means the course is FREE! There are a range of courses suited to all levels of expertise so go to www.ridetolive.co.nz to register for the subsidy and then enrol for your free course. We’ve had great feedback from those who’ve completed the courses locally. These comments are from riders who have had training in the last few months: “The practical aspects were well-
chosen and helped us to develop balanced control of the bike at low speeds. The following excursion up the Moutere Hill gave us practical experience to choose the right cornering lines….(the course) helped me appreciate the need to always acquire optimal vision, by adopting the right riding lines. I’m now much more confident about positioning the bike on the road.” “Thanks for the opportunity to attend Ride to Live course. I found it very worthwhile as I have improved my positioning on the road during cornering, am more in control when riding at slow speed and picked up some useful tips about braking. All of these are essential and the personal input of Kevin and Jason regarding skills was pitched at a level which made understanding and practicing improvements possible. I have recommended the course to riders I know and will attend others in the future.”
Save a Mate’s life! Right now if you get a mate to sign up for a Ride Forever Course, their course will be free and you’ll get a $20 fuel voucher! Terms and conditions apply so get all the details at ridetolive.co.nz. Mako skipper puts on a show at Trafalgar Peter Jones From the outset, the Tasman Mako have been blessed with outstanding leaders. In recent times, current coaches Andrew Goodman and Shane Christie led various campaigns with calm authority and the ability to inspire those around them with both deeds and words. Now David Havili has the captain’s role, and what a fine leader he has become. In Saturday’s Mitre 10 Cup tabletopping premiership clash with Waikato his astounding variety of skills were on display in the 34-17 win. Losing the toss was probably his only mistake of the afternoon, but it meant his side had to play the first 40 into a strong northwesterly wind. With the home team under the pump early as the Mooloo men strove to take advantage of the conditions and boss the game it was the skipper who turned the tables, snatching a timely interception and sprinting 80m to score against the run of play. His second try stretched the Mako lead to 27-5 early in the second spell then, when Waikato scored twice in quick succession to narrow the gap to 10, he popped up once more with more individual brilliance to bag his third and put the issue beyond doubt. But wasn’t just his tries that caught the eye. His defence was, as always, first class, along with his ability to read play from the back as well as timing passes designed to put others into gaps. The versatile skipper relished a return to the 15 jersey after
slotting into the midfield last week. “I definitely love playing 15 but it’s good to have that extra string to your bow, playing at 12.” David said that despite his side holding some handy advantages during the 80 minutes, he never felt they had the game won until the final whistle. “You never feel that you have cracked them, it was tough playing into that breeze in the first half and we were glad to have that buffer at halftime but then they came back, like Waikato always do.” Although Tasman lost four key players to the All Blacks camp this week their replacements stepped up in fine fashion, David quick to point out that they were by no means “new” players - Isaac Salmon, Alex Ainley, Sione Havili and Alex Nankivell bringing a wealth of experience to the mix. “These guys have been round for a while. Obviously now is their opportunity … it is awesome for us to have guys in the All Blacks, but we treated it as a challenge this week for those guys to step into their shoes and I thought they did that today.” They certainly did, all four bringing defensive steel to the party and executing their core roles professionally. Another top performer was young lock Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta who followed up a man-of-the-match effort against Counties with another big shift today. Jacob Norris, the Mako go-toguy at lineout time, is becoming increasingly influential, while Andrew Makalio is relishing

Photo Shuttersport. regular game time and the chance to run in the wide channels, while scoring regular tries on the back of unstoppable lineout drives. Halfback Dwayne Polataivao kicked well into the breeze while centre Fetuli Paea continues to prove a handful, on both sides of the ball. The Sparkies, as the Mako bench is known, are providing impact and continuity, with halfback Louie Chapman, flanker Braden Stewart and hooker Quentin MacDonald, who was extremely unlucky not to bag a “welcome back” try, to the fore. This Sunday it is off to Albany and a meeting with former Mako coach Kieran Keane’s North Harbour team. Kick-off 2.05pm.

Harriers: Nelson and Tasman runners and walkers finally got the chance to take part in the very popular Belgrove to Kohatu Race on Saturday after it was postponed due to Covid 19 lockdown. The 15km race followed the scenic Great Taste Trail from Belgrove, with a relentless 7km uphill climb to Spooners Tunnel. Matt Bowen and Curtis Moore led the field throughout the race and brought the best out in each other. The younger legs of Matt got him across the line in 1.02.08hrs, just four seconds ahead of Curtis.

Rangers claim football crown Jonty Dine Rangers AFC are once again the Nelson division one football champions. Rangers wrapped up the title two weeks ago after beating Nelson College 3-0 before putting an exclamation on its season with a 2-0 win over Richmond on Saturday. The side has dominated the competition since the outset, dropping just one game all year to defend its title. Elsewhere, second placed FC Nelson finished with a close fought 2-1 win over Tahuna, Biak Tha Thang and Thawn Pi netting the goals for FC. In the round’s final fixture, Jaewoo Park scored a double as Nelson College edged
Nelson Suburbs Development Suburbs 2-1 at Saxton Field. After 15 rounds, Rangers sit atop the table with 11 wins and two draws for 35 points with FC in second with 29. The two sides will square off this weekend in the Price Charity Cup final at Guppy Park. Biak Tha Thang Vanuk says after three losses to the Rangers this season, they are out for revenge. “We are in good shape and will do our best.” He says the air of invincibility surrounding the Blenheim team is gone after they were stunned by Tahuna two weeks ago. “They are beatable.” Thang has been in scintillating scoring form this year, setting a new season record of 26
goals. The Myanmar-born striker says he set himself a target of 30 goals this season but says setting a new league record is a pretty good consolation. He says while it was disappointing not to win the league, FC still has a chance to prove its worth. However, Thang acknowledges the Rangers provide a stern challenge. “We will have to play as a team, move the ball quickly and finish off our chances.” Scorers Rangers 2 def Richmond 0 FC Nelson 2 def Tahuna 1 Nelson College 2 def Suburbs 1
Football: Nelson Suburbs were held to a 2-2 draw in its latest Mainland Premier League Fixture against Selwyn United on Saturday. Dorian Grault opened the scoring for Selwyn to take a 1-0 half-time lead. Suburbs equalized shortly after the breakthrough Ed Sillars before Calum Murdoch put Selwyn back in front. Just as it looked as though Suburbs would leave Foster Park empty handed, its top goal scorer Jordan Yong netted another and ensured his side would share the points. This Sunday Nelson hosts Christchurch United at Saxton Field. Kick off 1pm.
Rugby: The Tasman Mako women’s side has endured a tough start to its 2020 Farah Palmer Cup campaign. Tasman lost its opening game against Wellington in Blenheim 62-0 before going down 88-0 to Manawatu in Palmerston North. Saturday saw the Mako play its first match at Trafalgar Park and they put up a brave fight but were again on the losing side, beaten 67-24 by Otago. This weekend the women head to Motueka to take on the Hawke’s Bay Tuis.

Boxing champ passes on his knowledge to Nelsonians Local boxing enthusiasts got tips from the master over the weekend as Shane Cameron visited town. The former heavyweight champion hosted his Counter Punch programme at Victory Boxing over the weekend with the aim of upskilling volunteers at the popular gym. Victory Boxing programme director Paul Hampton says the weekend was an opportunity for 22 locals, most of them volunteers, at the Victory gym, to rub shoulders with a Kiwi sporting great and sharpen
up their boxing skills. “We’re always trying to upskill our people and offer new experiences and we’ve forged a really strong relationship with Shane over the past couple of years. He’s a good friend of the gym and it’s fantastic to be able to bring him down here and learn from him.” Shane’s Counter Punch programme aims to teach proper technique for boxing coaches and personal trainers. He says more people are using boxing training as a way to stay fit and upskilling the coaches
backbone of Victory Boxing and we’re always striving to upskill and be as professional as possible. Also we’re keen to keep learning and growing so getting someone of the calibre of Shane and his courses is great for us. Our volunteers are so committed so it’s a way for us to say thank you.” He says the gym is as busy as its ever been. “The thing about Victory is that it’s constantly growing and changing and we need to keep making sure that we keep our standards high and offer new challenges.”
and trainers is a way for him to pass on his boxing knowledge. “I’ve been coached by a lot of coaches and I’ve picked up some of their good traits and some bad traits that I’ve ignored. I just see it as an opportunity for me in the fitness industry and using my sport as well. I designed this course four years ago and its an accredited course so I enjoy teaching it.” Paul says keeping the volunteers at the gym fresh is a key reason why he invited Shane to visit. “The volunteers are the

s w e N g n i h s Fi Abundance in the bay Dominik Berghamer Weather and work kept me from fishing over the last two weeks but the ones who were lucky enough to make use the calmer days caught a few snapper! There are many reports of them being caught in the shallows out of Okiwi Bay, and the Golden Bay snapper appear to have turned up as well. Some were even caught off the Boulder Bank, but small fish only. This is not very surprising, last season saw an abundance of small snapper, they grew steadily over the summer and were about 25cm just before lockdown. In many places they were so thick that they became a nuisance and we had to change spots. Most of these fish should be legal sized by now. This early in the season fishing in the bay is usually hard work, the snapper are few and far between and the spiny dogfish abundant. Patience and perse-
verance (and luck) are needed to find a calm day and the right spot. Delaware Bay is always good for a trophy fish in spring but these large old fish are shy and very clever. Burley works well but, unfortunately, attracts a lot of sharks (and in some years red cod). Using prawns or crabs as bait can help reduce the numbers of unwanted fish caught. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s new season starts on the 1st of October and the members joining before October 16th will go into the draw to win a very special prize: AquaZition Rods and Hunting and Fishing Nelson have sponsored a hand crafted AquaZition Tasman Bay Action rod and a Shimano Trinidad 12a reel. This top end combo is valued at $1200 and the winner will be drawn at our next social day on the 18th of October. Find more info on www.dawn breakers.co.nz or on facebook. Tight lines!
Players young and old, novice and experienced, are being encouraged to take a swing at tennis this summer. Nelson Bays Tennis Association Regional Coordinator Ali Telford says that the initiative is an opportunity for all ages and abilities. “It’s about socialising with a local community, being active with friends and family and having fun.” The free weekend, sponsored by Nelson KIA, will be run at Wakefield Club, Hope & Nelson Vets Club, Richmond Club, Tāhunanui Club, Nelson Lawn Club, Māpua Club and Golden Bay Club. The weekend also doubles as the Kelly Bowater Rally Against Breast Cancer, an annual event to raise funds for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. There is a free Hells snack pizza for every person who attends, as well as music, BBQ, spot prizes and giveaways. Love Tennis open weekend is from 1-4pm, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 of October. Are you thinking of building? Visit us to see why Milestone Homes is the smarter choice for your new home New premises in the heart of Richmond West It’s hard to miss the brand-new Milestone Homes office space that has been built on Lower Queen Street. The impressive building, complimented by the illuminated signage, has certainly put a stamp on the landscape in the rapidly growing Richmond West area.
Two years ago, Milestone Homes jumped at the opportunity to secure the anchor tenancy of an office space on Lower Queen Street, enabling them to purpose design their offices to align with their vision and match the needs of their clients, staff and stakeholders. According to General Manager Adam Hills the vision of the building was “we had the opportunity to design and specify the building from scratch and we had three
main focusses: 1. Provide a superior customer experience with a relaxed, comfortable and professional face to the business. 2. Create a great space for our staff to work, giving them somewhere to enjoy coming to every day as well as something to be proud of. 3. Make the most of the public face of the business and make the Milestone Office a destination / 1st port of call for people looking to make a smarter choice for building a new home.” Built by the excellent team from Coman Construction with a selec-
tion of Milestone subcontractors adding the finishing touches, the end result is a very impressive office space! The thought that’s gone into the finishing and furnishing is evident throughout in Adam’s words “has only been achieved thanks to the advice and input from the people involved with the project”. Entering the new purpose-built offices on Lower Queen Street, you feel a sense of relaxed luxury. The welcome area is appointed with a comfy, beautifully upholstered couch, coffee machine and a contemporary print on the feature wall.
Stunning home plans and quality builds
Local trades have played a huge part in putting together the new Milestone Homes offices. Built by Coman and finished by a range of professionals, the result is stunning.
General Manager Adam Hills joined the business in 2007 and together with Richmond-local Simon Collett has overseen the growth of the business with over 300 homes built in that time. “It’s amazing to see where we are now and it’s not something that I could have imagined when I started 13 years ago” says Adam. Always focussed on building quality homes for great value, they have established themselves as a very successful brand and business. Adam has his own take on the reasons for their success. “Firstly, we have a great team who strive to achieve the best outcome for our clients. Secondly, we know what we do, we know who we build for, and we do it well. Or, as we sometimes say - ‘stick to your knitting.’ We aren’t driven by being the biggest home building company, nor do we need to win awards to get satisfaction from what we do. Our aim is that no matter their budget, every client will be given good advice, enjoy the experience and get a great home at the end of it.” Milestone Homes understand from experience that for many new home builders, much of their apprehen-
sion stems from the unknown, and difficulty in appreciating what the home will look and feel like from the plan. “When you go to an open home, you see exactly what you are going to get. You like it, you want to live there. However, building a new house is often perceived as too difficult - there are an overwhelming number of decisions to be made, and it’s hard to visualise how your home will look or feel from a piece of paper,” says Adam. Which is one of the reasons why Milestone Homes have built their showhome to mirror the specifications of their 30 proven, well considered house plans. Ideally located at 58 Berryfield Drive, two-minutes from their new office space, Adam says; “Once they’ve toured the showhome, our clients have a realistic impression of how their own home will look and feel. Regardless of the size home they want to build, the onsite specifications are the same, right down to the doors and taps. We have thought about how the homes look and each plan has three different façades or looks from the outside, as nobody wants to live in an identical
house to their neighbour.” With each house plan, there is the flexibility for change – whether it is adding/removing a bedroom or a walk-in pantry for example, meaning there are approximately 100 potential plans available. Milestone Homes use trusted suppliers, who supply quality products, therefore the client has trust. Adam says; “Rather than our clients having to research every fixture and fitting on the market, if they want to choose a different option, we already have three or four alternatives that have been pre-priced and narrowed down by our sup-
pliers, based on quality and what is on trend. Our suppliers maintain up-to-date samples on site at our showhome, so that our clients can visualise how the alternative will look in their own home.” Milestone Homes take as much of the hassle and apprehension out of the building process as possible. They strive to place building a new home on a par with buying an existing home. Adam says; “Clients know that they are making a really good investment, because they are always going to create equity when they build a house vs buying existing at the market rate.” Adam also
describes their incredible team of tradespeople and builders, who have been with them for many years, as being crucial to their success and good reputation. “We are very proud to be a Registered Master builder. Our tradespeople and builders have been with us for 13 years. Our construction manager is a former Apprentice of the Year and also a shareholder in the business. With the volume of homes we build each year, we are able to consistently achieve a good value, quality product. And if something isn’t right, one phone call puts it right.”
