Gay conversion therapist to flout ban Erin Bradnock A Nelson counsellor says he is prepared to go prison to keep delivering a controversial and discredited therapy aimed at converting homosexuals to heterosexuality. Labour announced their Rainbow policies last week, including a ban on so-called “conversion therapy”, if re-elected. The therapy is described by US-based

charity The Trevor Project as "dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity”. However, David Riddell from Stoke’s ‘Living Wisdom School of Counselling’ labels homosexuality as a “maladjustment” and says the ban is a “vital issue to every counsellor of integrity and every counsellor who claims Christianity. It will

make criminals of us all”. He says, going to prison for continuing the therapy would be worth it. David says he has helped many young people live “heterosexual lives” in his 30 years of practice. He says his opinion on someone living as a homosexual is “no different to someone who eats too much sugar or drinks too much alcohol or is a workaholic”.

Zen Smith at Q-Youth says David’s views on homosexuality were “privileged” and they believe Riddell to be “out of his depth,” when it comes to understanding LGBTI issues. Q-Youth, provides support, information, advocacy and education for LGBTI young people and their whanau. Nelson’s Labour candidate Rachel Boyack says she is aware that conversion therapy is practised

by counsellors in Nelson and that she fully supports Labour’s promise to ban it. “I know there is a high price for that service, and we need to put the needs of young people’s mental health over someone’s profit. “I’m a practising Christian and it’s important we put our young people first, that’s something that is fundamental to me,” says Rachel.

Book bonanza hits Founders Kate Russell A spring-time book fair is coming to Founders Park this weekend in lieu of the traditional annual winter event. The Founders Book Fair, which is usually

held on Queen's Birthday weekend, kicks off this Saturday and will run for 10 days. Organiser Karen Clark says, due to Covid-19, there were doubts that it would go ahead at all this year. “We had to cancel in June and then

cancel again in August when we went back into Level 2. It's only since Level 1 we made the decision to go ahead - so we kicked into full gear.”

Four people were injured when two cars ended up on Tāhunanui Beach after crashing through the barrier on Monday. A police spokesperson says they were called shortly after midday when two vehicles crashed on Rocks Rd. St John Ambulance spokesperson Gerard Campbell says four people were assessed by St John at the scene. Three had moderate injuries and one had minor injuries. Two of those patients were taken to Nelson Hospital by ambulance. Fire and Emergency NZ shift supervisor John Ditmer says two units were sent to the crash. He says nobody was trapped but crews assisted police and ambulance for about half an hour. FENZ says it serves as a reminder to our communities to take care on our roads, and the importance of wearing seatbelts. Photo: Sara Hollyman.

And it’s a decision that was easy to make, due to around half a million items having been donated this year. Many of these consist of what Karen calls “lockdown clear-outs.” “We have far more books than normal. We stopped collecting donations during lockdown but when it finished it was like people had done nothing but clean out their bookshelves. “We haven’t scaled back at all - in fact, it’s bigger.” This year there is a new room dedicated to mixed media, including DVDs, CDs and vinyl, due to its

increasing popularity at the fair. “We also had around 200 posters donated, so we’re going to sell them this year, too.” Karen says the new area will make room for more books and “puzzles for Africa” in The Granary. “It’s definitely been the year for puzzles.” The fair began in 1988 and is a major fundraiser for Founders Heritage Park. The Founders Book Fair runs from 17 - 26 October from 10am - 4:30pm. Entry is $2 per adult or $5 for a ten-day pass. Children under 12 are free. Remember to bring a reusable bag for your books.

Arts Festival shakeup on cards Locally Owned and Operated

3

Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The trust that runs the Nelson Arts Festival is amid a shakeup after the director resigned after only a year in the job and three of its seven board members have also signalled their intention to leave. The normal festival was cancelled this year due to uncertainty in Covid alert levels. It was meant to be running properly now but the board made the decision in early September to cancel all normal events before Labour Weekend. Nelson Festivals Trust chair Brent Thawley confirmed to the Nelson Weekly that festival director Padma Naidu had resigned, along with board members Sarah Sharp, Caroline Marshall and Debbie Hannan. “We have all been unsettled for the past months and certainly we haven’t been delivering the sort of festival we all expected.” The arts festival has instead been running smaller events in the city. Brent says that with all the uncertainty people are feeling, some are questioning what the future looks like.

The Mask Parade was one of the events cut from this year’s Arts Festival. Photo: Sara Hollyman. “People are reassessing what’s important.” Brent says that the finances of the trust are looking OK and the decision to postpone early put it in good stead. Earlier this year the trust requested a reduction in its funding from $565,000 down to $305,000. It was also granted an extra $100,000 to run the Mask Parade but then the trust made the call to cancel that. The funds will be returned to Nelson City Council, minus the costs already spent, says Brent. He says the decision to cancel the majority of the festival was made on the information they had at the time. The factors were reducing the trust’s financial

exposure and protecting ratepayers, Brent says. Outgoing director Padma Naidu, who came to Nelson from Auckland last year to run the festival, says it has been a challenging year. “It’s been an interesting time… it’s certainly not what I expected in the first year of the festival.” She says she will see out the festival but is reassessing her priorities and is not sure what the future holds or where she might base herself. Debbie Hannan was also resigning from the board saying it was time for new energy. “It is time to get some young faces, some mana whenua. It would be great to give some of those people a chance.”

Victory ‘needs vision’ for Southern Link opportunity Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Jeremy Matthews knows how it sounds – a real estate agent who lives on Moana Ave high over Tasman Bay telling Victory residents that they need to start thinking creatively about what the Southern Link could mean for their community. For the last 19 years he has been wanting the Government to build the new highway that would very likely follow the old Railway Reserve and down in St Vincent street. He says it needs to happen. Victory residents have long said the move would severe their suburb, create a community divided by a road. NZTA is currently in the process of deciding the future options for Nelson’s transport issues. They include building an ‘Inland Route’, known as the Southern Link, establishing clearways on Waimea Rd and Rocks Rd or widening Rocks Rd and having it remain as SH6. Jeremy and his cohort of pro Southern Link enthusiasts say that the oppositional narrative over a new inland highway needs

to move on. “It’s unproductive. If you want to call it an olive branch … let’s have a look and see what we can do.” He says Victory needs to think about what it might be able to get out of a new highway that he says is “as inevitable as sunrise”. “There is no other community in the Nelson region that is facing such a dramatic challenge with such an amazing opportunity.” Jeremy has a vision. He thinks that a new highway should come down into St Vincent street and then sink down below the sight line. Then he says all the shops should be demolished with the new Victory created around Victory Square. “The park is the sizzle. Right now, it’s got some seagulls and a couple of cricket teams on the weekend. It’s nice but it’s just sitting there.” He says the community should turn its back on the road and so the new square, complete with shops and maybe apartments, becomes more a village green that still has room for cricket. Then he says that the intersection with Toi Toi St should be split into levels with a flyover that itself becomes a park, in the form of New York City’s Highline. It

Photo: Charles Anderson. would have separate pedestrian and cycle paths so both parties are happy, he says. “That is the piece de resistance.” Currently the Southern Link is the cheapest of the long-term options, at $190m to $260m, but something of Jeremy’s vision would cost considerably more. “We don’t want the cheapest, we want the best.” On the topic of Victory’s pollution levels under a new highway, he says that electric cars and trucks

would eventually mean there would be no issue. “These are just ideas. To some people I’m the devil incarnate and I’m kind of cool with that.” He and a consortium of pro Inland Route groups are currently in battle with the NZTA over what they say was a flawed consultation process. They say that the agency released their plan with incorrect assumptions about what clearways might do to Waimea Rd and Rutherford St.

“It’s a shot across the bow.” Jeremy says his skin in the game is that he hates seeing “potential not being released”. He says he would like the Victory community to think about what could be in it for them and then demand it of council and Government. “It sounds like I am trying to buy them off, and I am. “I look at the waterfront and I see how much pleasure it could bring for everybody.”

Nelson’s cheapest petrol revealed Kate Russell Two self-service outlets owned by one company have taken out the city’s lowest fuel prices in a recent Nelson Weekly survey. Price boards, before loyalty discounts, were analysed from 11 petrol stations in Nelson and Stoke, on Monday, 12 October. Results found that NPD St Vincent St and NPD Parkers Rd equally offered the cheapest 91 fuel prices, at $1.80 per litre. The most expensive in Nelson was the independentlyowned NPD Port Nelson Fuel at $1.89, followed closely by BP Haven Rd at $1.88. The other prices ranged from between $1.84 and $1.86. In terms of diesel prices, NPD St Vincent St and Parkers Rd were the winners again at $1.09, while the most expensive was a tie between NPD Port Nelson Fuel and BP Haven Rd at $1.16. NPD CEO Barry Sheridan says because their St Vincent St and Parkers Rd outlets are self-serve, they are able to operate with lower overheads and operational costs which

allows them to pass on those savings to motorists. “As a Nelson-based, familyowned business, NPD understands the importance of bringing lower fuel prices to our community - making a positive difference to the weekly budget for Nelson families.” He could not comment on the price of fuel at NPD Port Nelson, as it is independently owned and operated, but stated they accept supermarket discounts as well as the 15c Gold Card discount. In Richmond, the cheapest 91 fuel out of the stations surveyed was Caltex Richmond, at $1.84 per litre, with the most expensive fuel in the region coming in at a whopping $2.12 at Caltex in Hope. Readers should keep in mind the prices on the boards don’t always reflect what you will pay for fuel, especially when you take into account loyalty programmes - such as Z’s Pumped or AA Smartfuel. A petrol pricing app called Gaspy can also show users the best prices on fuel from petrol stations in the area.

Nelson’s first timers cast their vote With many young locals voting for the first time in this election, reporter Erin Bradnock asked them what they were wanting out of their respective ballots.

Nelson College’s Josh Sheridan and Allize Mangar have already voted early. “I voted yesterday with my Mum. I was surprised by how easy it was,” says Josh Allize agrees: “I went with some friends over the weekend. It was cool. It was so quick and easy.” Both say they’ve been impressed

with Jacinda Ardern’s leadership and her performance in the leaders’ debates. Each have gotten their policy information from Facebook and the leaders’ debates. Josh and Allize say their friends who can are all voting this year. “I think everyone’s pretty aware of this election. It was also super easy to enrol,” says Josh.

Nelson College for Girl student Esther Walters just made the cut for this year’s election due to the date being pushed back to the October 17. “I’m super excited that I can vote now,” says Esther. “Voting is not just for the white old people, it needs to be everyone voting because this is how things will change. Vote for people who will positively impact your community.” Esther says she would be considering many issues

when casting her vote this year including mental health, homelessness and poverty. Esther wishes there was more education around politics to address the consistently low youth voter turnout. “We need some good education that isn’t confusing. That tells us how it is so we are set up for the rest of our lives to make meaningful decisions about who and how to vote.”

Nayland College’s Ruby Vidgen has also cast her vote early, after walking past by a polling booth last week with a friend. Ruby considers herself a political person and has been keeping up with party policies through the televised debates. Ruby considered policy regarding conservation, housing and mental health while deciding who to vote for. “Mental health is a big one for me, I feel like I haven’t

seen any improvement over the past decade as the issue just worsens,” she says. When it comes to conservation policy, Ruby says she has not been particularly impressed with any of the parties’ policies. “I’m more concerned with conservation over carbon limits and things. I think New Zealand and our government should be focussing a lot more on conservation.”

Isel Twilight Market returns Erin Bradnock Isel Park’s Twilight Market is returning tomorrow after a winter hiatus. The free-entry market will begin this Thursday at 4.30pm and will continue every Thursday through the summer, weather permitting. Market founder and organiser Jo McCrostie says community support has been instrumental in continuing the markets amidst event cancellations in Nelson. Covid-19 alert levels meant that its reopening was delayed a week. “People have been so supportive, the community has really been

keen to see it go ahead,” says Jo. Up to 70 food and craft stalls will surround Isel House during the market’s busier periods, with live music and seating areas set up. Jo says the lawn space will be great for those wanting to social distance and says people often bring their own chairs and blankets, sometimes with a bottle of wine. Jo founded the market five years ago and it remains as the city’s only regular night market. “It’s a great space. There’s something there for everybody, for all ages.”

When he was still at Nelson College, Jack Everett decided he wanted his work office to be in a Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) helicopter. He has now realised that office goal as he and three others graduated as Helicopter Loadmasters at RNZAF Base Ohakea last Friday. Corporal Everett was encouraged to apply for the role by a New Zealand Defence Force recruiter. “After looking into it I thought that it looked like a pretty cool job,” he says.

“After looking into it I thought that it looked like a pretty cool job.”

He filled in time between leaving Nelson College and the Air Force by working in hospitality and in an aluminium joinery factory while waiting for his place on the loadmaster course. Now, at 21, he has progressed from struggling to direct a helicopter around a practice square to the exacting job of directing the pilot with pinpoint accuracy. A cool head, quick reactions and critical thinking skills are essential for a helicopter loadmaster, who is responsible for any passengers, underslung loads and rescue hoists. Corporal Everett needs to be able to assess fastchanging situations, determine the right course of action and then communicate that effectively to achieve a successful mission. “I’m now able to winch someone to a specific point with night vision goggles, in amongst a whole lot of trees,” he says. It’s a handy skill to have when you are part of a search and rescue team. Corporal Everett will now join No.3 Squadron, which is called on to carry out aid delivery and search and rescue missions in New Zealand and around the South Pacific. It also supports the New Zealand Army by delivering troops and equipment into combat and supports the police and other government agencies. Recently, the squadron’s NH90 helicopters and crew supported the Australian Defence Force-led response to the bushfires and also the response to the Whakaari/White Island eruption. Corporal Everett, who is also a firefighter with the Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade, says the RNZAF has been a great career choice for him. “I would tell anyone who's thinking of joining to just do it. You won’t regret it, the opportunities are amazing.”

Ending sunshine wages

Rachel Boyack for Nelson

Ross Lampert, FIRST Union organiser with Jenny Wells, FIRST Union delegate and Rachel.

We’re committed to helping working New Zealanders by raising wages and protecting them while they’re at work. Labour has increased the minimum wage to $18.90 this year, increasing the pay of 242,000 full time workers by an extra $48 per week. And we’ll raise it again to $20 by 2021, as well as extending the Living Wage to workers contracted to the public sector, and doubling sick days from 5 to 10 days a year. As a former FIRST Union organiser, Rachel has spent years fighting for workers across the top of the South to get a fair deal, and she negotiated collective agreements with employers like Nelson Pine to lift wages and conditions for workers.

Rachel says that Nelson still has a reputation for ‘Sunshine Wages’, but she believes that anyone who does a fair day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Rachel has spent years advocating for better working conditions for people like Pak’nSave Richmond employee Jenny Wells. “I met Rachel when she was the organiser for FIRST Union,” Jenny says. “When Rachel put her mind to something, it got done. She was extremely effective at advocating for us, and that’s why I’m supporting her in the election.”

Improved health services As a Nelson MP inside a Labour Government, Rachel Boyack says she will be a strong advocate for a new hospital for Nelson and improved mental health services.

“It’s important to me that clients and their whānau are fully involved in the design of services at Nikau House so that they meet the needs of the community.”

Labour has made record investment in health infrastructure after nine years of neglect. “As your Member of Parliament inside a Labour Government, I will push hard for a new Nelson Hospital to be at the top of the list,” Rachel says. Rachel’s work with the clients and whānau of Nikau House is an example of how she made people’s voice heard and made a positive change for mental health services in our community. “I supported the clients in their battle to protect Nikau House all the way to Wellington to present their petition,” Rachel says. “I continue to work with the clients and families to ensure they have input into what the services look like going forward.”

Rachel with Nikau House campaigner, Daniel Timms.

Vote now and give two ticks to Labour With Election Day this Saturday we are urging people to vote early and avoid the queues on Saturday. The polling booths have COVID-19 precautionary processes in place which means voting may take a little longer. A big thank you to the friendly Electoral Commission teams across the Nelson electorate who have made it so easy to vote early. Jacinda and the team have a plan to rebuild New Zealand and it’s already underway, now’s not the time to put on the brakes. Outside of Parliament I have a proven track record of getting things done for Nelson. I advocated for a new school for Richmond West and was delighted with last week’s announcement that a site has been purchased making us one step closer to a new school in the area. This is just one of the many initiatives I have backed to make Nelson a better place to live. This election is Nelson’s opportunity to have a seat at the table in a Jacinda Ardern- led Labour Government. If I’m privileged to be elected as your MP, I will be a strong and positive voice for Nelson.

Please give your two ticks to Labour so we can keep Nelson moving!

Every New Zealander deserves a warm, dry, safe place to call home We turned around the state housing decline by putting an end to National’s state house sell-off and ramping up our state house building programme, with Kāinga Ora now building more than 25 new houses a week.

Outside there’s room for a raised vegetable garden and the secure fence and gate has made Maree feel safe.

Here in Nelson, the first state houses built under this Government’s watch welcomed in new tenants last October. The first tenants to move into the Kawai Street block, Maree and Mark Phillips, say their sunny, warm, dry home has “meant everything” to them.

“She goes down the streets pointing out Labour election hoardings shouting, ‘we need Rachel and Aunty Jacinda’.”

“It’s dry, it’s warm, it’s double glazed and insulated and has a walk- in shower which has been great for us as we both suffer from arthritis,” Maree says.

Her small granddaughter, Ruby-Lee is very impressed with Labour.

Paying it forward for homeless on birthday Erin Bradnock Instead of asking for presents for her 15th birthday, Sophie Weenink Smith instead asked for donations to help the city’s homeless. Now she has raised nearly $2000 to help that growing community. Sophie handed out 65 meal cards last Sunday at Anzac Park as part of Giving Aroha’s evening meal service. The community group serves over 60 homeless people meals each week. “When I volunteered to cook and serve food last time at Giving Aroha, it broke my heart when a man said it was the first meal he had eaten in days, she says. Sophie started fundraising as part of her 15th birthday at the start of the month, asking friends and family to donate to her Givealittle page for meal cards instead of buying anything for herself. “I hope to inspire the community to do the same on their birthdays. Even if one person in Nelson did this each week it would really make a difference, Sophie says. Alongside the meal cards,

Covid cancels Santa Parade Staff Reporter To avoid a potential Covid cancellation, the Santa Parade will not go ahead this year. The Nelson City Council has opted for an ‘alert level proof ’ Christmas celebration, taking the decision to hold a number

of smaller events over the entire month of December rather than a Santa Parade. There will be Santa photo ops, carol singing, games and performances of The Nutcracker ballet. People shopping or dining at participating outlets will also be in with a chance to win $5000.

Photo: Erin Bradnock. Sophie has been handing out personalised notes with supportive messages inside such as ‘you are loved’ and ‘keep your head held high, you are amazing and strong’. Sophie says $1810 has been raised this week for food vouchers provided by Loaves and Fishes at Nelson’s All Saints Church. The Loaves and Fishes meal cards are exchanged at the church on Vanguard Street, which has been running its service for 25 years. Sophie says she started volunteering with Giving Aroha once she began to notice how

big an issue homelessness is in Nelson. She says she has noticed more and more homeless camps on her river clean up trips. Sophie says she will continue to advocate and fundraise for the homeless community by handing out meal cards each week until the funds run out. She says anyone looking to help with kai or donations can visit the ‘Giving Aroha in Anzac Park’ Facebook page. “I think it makes people realise how lucky we are. I’ve had really positive messages from strangers who want to help, and it makes me so happy, Sophie says.

Your Voice Dear Sir, Yes, “we’ll build the link’ say Nats, led by our MP Nick Smith. But two environment courts have said “no” and the NZTA has found that 49 per cent of Nelson is against the Southern Link and now just 39 per cent are for it. So, MP Nick Smith should “stop flogging a dead horse” and “throw in the towel!” Anton Hyman No slowing down for mechanics of VTNZ’s over 70s club: Good on you guys. I've had many good years of service from the team at VTNZ Pascoe St, they're all a good bunch. Gavin Palfreman Yes and no to this sort of thing. Have they ever thought that they are keeping young people out of a job? Steve Lawson Good on you guys. I think that if you're still fit and healthy, why not, especially if you still enjoy what you do. Helen Hills All that experience – awesome. We should be hooking into these people for all their knowledge. The young ones would learn so much - 70+ is not ‘old’. have devoted so much of their time to this restoration. WF 403 was one of the engines I had to keep the steam up on the nightshift when I worked at Greymouth Loco at age 17. I have been looking forward to her being fired up but I guess it will never happen now, just like the inland route - it’s only been on the go since the 1960s. Shame on you NCC for waiting till now to stop it. Alan N Barb Cochrane

Is this so they can fund the Santa Parade? Oh no sorry, they have cancelled this too. Lloyd Elliott If there was one car it would need a resource consent, but a dozen locomotives would not. To run these old machines a few times a year would surely not impact on the air quality or pollution to the extent that 36 cars a minute do on Waimea Rd. Allan Mulligan I think the recourse consent relates to it exceeding the inner-city smoke bylaw. Just nuts. They should be helping the park to get people through the gate. It’s great for kids to see these old trains working. Bevan Macdonald Ridiculous. What an asset to our community this would be. Daniel Daly Come on NCC just give them consent, they operate by the sea and main highway, are you going to make all trucks

with what’s been sold, don’t bid. Jessie Jones

A group of motorcyclists with real concerns for the numbers of teen suicide cases happening each year are using their wheels and hearts to assist those suffering. Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club (TNMC) ambassador Richard Tatana says they use the noise of their machines to raise awareness. Any funds raised are passed on to organisations that work directly with suicide prevention. At their event, starting at Filco Harley Davidson, Annesbrook, on the November 7, TNMC will hand over funds raised to a representative from Youthline. Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club Christine Warren and Anton Bugler are pictured here. Photo: Jacqui Rawson get resource consents. Colin Appleton Jobs at risk as international students dry up: If we can have overseas people here for sport, films etc then why not overseas students.? As long as they get tested, isolate, and once here they stay for the year. No going back and forth. Also, they would be happy to pay for their isolation stay. It’s a billion-dollar industry that NZ needs. Stu Marsland If international students are willing to stay the whole year and quarantine on ar-

rival, then they should be allowed to do so. They bring so much extra money into schools that government funding will never replace. Nikole Berkett Nazi memorabilia auction ‘offensive’: It’s history, good or bad. I would love some off that stuff. Makes you think how good we’ve got it. Steve Cobb To deface someone’s property is not okay. I’m sure the auctioneer did not hold a gun to the bidders and force them to buy the items. It’s simple - if you are not happy and disagree

Nelson Matters I seek your vote in Election 2020 so I can continue to champion this wonderful Nelson Tasman region we share. I do this job because I love helping people. I have the experience to know how Government works. Recent cases include getting NZ residency for volunteer firefighter and florist Steve and Gail Webster, resolving the Ministry of Education bill of $15,000 for teacher and new parent Jasmine Jenke and helping access cataract surgery for Angela Wilson. I sort hundreds of cases like these each year. This work also helps me identify where Government is not working and drive change. I am also motivated by the opportunity to advance projects

with others that will make Nelson an even better place. They have included establishing the Kahurangi National Park, getting Garin College, building Whakatu Drive, upgrading our arts facilities and projects like Saxton Stadium for our sports and the Early Settlers Memorial recognising our history. Projects started but not completed include the Waimea Community Dam, the Great Taste Cycleway and the extension of Snowdens Bush. My top priority in this next Parliament if re-elected will be getting progress on a new hospital for Nelson. It will involve investment of over $500 million. The current buildings are outdated,

too small and New Zealand’s most earthquake prone hospital. The Building Act changes I made as Minister require it be replaced by 2028. We need to get on with it. Nelson’s growing traffic congestion cannot be ignored. National has announced a fully funded $210 million plan to get on with building the Inland Route and converting Rocks Road into a boulevard for walking and cycling. These major infrastructure projects are part of National’s economic plan. A recession is a smart time to be investing in community assets. It is far better to create jobs building these facilities than on paying thousands of people the dole.

Freedoms of our democracy are so much more important than outraged people. History is more important to remember than obscure or hide. I have no problem with people owning these items. Their reasons for owning them are theirs. People need to pull their heads in and allow us our own beliefs. I hate what Nazis did - I have visited a concentration camp and learnt a lot about this period in history. People don’t be outraged to live in a free society. Shane Goodhue

How about kiwis get disturbed about the child sexual abuse and family violence that plagues this country instead of someone selling a flag. We live in the age of hypocrisy. Emma Marshall

The Nazi flag can realistically only have one meaning and that’s the support of white supremacy and racism, not to mention the horrific torture that the Jews and other people were put through. Leeanne Hay-was Jacka

I like auctions, having said that, not the only dodgy items on sale. Never talked to them about it but was also unimpressed by the furniture made out of elephant’s feet in another recent auction. Diana Margaret Watt

My Election 2020 campaign has focussed on jobs. Nelson has already lost hundreds of jobs and dozens of businesses. Unemployment is tipped to top 220,000 nationally and 4,000 locally. Labour is compounding this problem by imposing extra costs and regulations on businesses. National’s policies like Jobstart and Skillstart do the opposite and will help keep people in work. The other major campaign issue has been Labour’s centralisation of our most important public services like our polytechnic, NMIT and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Nelson has everything to lose and nothing to gain from them being run

from afar. National will ensure we retain local control of NMIT and our District Health Board. Nelson is the best little city in the best little country in the world. These are challenging times. I offer the experience of having helped get Nelson through two previous recessions. Working together we will recover and make Nelson even better. My final plea regardless of who you may be supporting is to ensure you vote. Nelson proudly has one of the highest polling rates. It shows respect for those who have fought for our freedoms and that we care about Nelson’s and New Zealand’s future. Advert.

I’m proud to be your Labour candidate for Nelson, a beautiful place with a heart that cares for its environment and its people. I’ve worked hard in our community as a union organiser and as health and safety co-ordinator for the Anglican Diocese. Community service is in my DNA. I’ve given my time to serve on the boards of the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and the Nelson Environment Centre. I’m a former President and council member of the NMIT student association. You can learn more about my record of service and achievements in this issue of the Nelson Weekly. I know I have support at the highest levels inside Labour to achieve my vision for Nelson. If I’m privileged to be elected as Nelson’s Labour Member of Parliament, I will work hard to: • support local businesses to rebuild post COVID-19 • get fairer pay for our workforce and end “sunshine wages” • eliminate homelessness • advocate for a new hospital and improved mental health services • get better public transport • address climate change. Let’s keep Nelson moving with a local Labour voice inside Government.

Nick needs your electorate vote so he can keep helping people and fighting for Nelson. He is one of the most experienced MPs in Parliament and has the skills we need to help get us through these tough economic times. Nick has helped achieve a long list of major projects for Nelson including the Kahurangi National Park, Garin College, Whakatu Dr and Saxton Stadium. Recent projects started but which he wants to see through to completion are the Waimea Community Dam, Great Taste Cycleway and extension of Snowden’s Bush Reserve. His next key projects are the replacement of the earthquake prone Nelson Hospital, a new Berryfields School in Richmond West, building the Inland Route and converting Rock’s Rd into a boulevard for walking and cycling. Nick and wife Linley have four children, he is a civil engineer and has a doctorate in landslides from the University of Canterbury. His recreational interests include kayaking, running, biking, recreational fishing and rugby.

“I’ve never had ambitions of being a politician, I’ve always been more concerned with people on a community level. For the last 10 years I’ve been working in community one way or another, whether it be Supported Employment or Ministry Leading. However, it was when I witnessed the absolute over-reach by this government during the COVID-19 outbreak, that I realized I couldn’t sit idly by while the Government ignores science and common sense, while crippling our economy, robbing our people of their well-being and showing absolute disregard for our individual sovereignty as free-thinking human beings. Regardless of a virus’s lethality, infection rate or its novelty, when we as a people surrender our human rights and GOD-given freedoms, we put our Nation’s future at immense risk – a risk much higher than 24 deaths. We have been told that by decimating our economy, we have put health before money. This is a disingenuous slight of hand that fails to address the fact that without a stable economy, there is no healthcare for the people. It is this lack of foresight to the future of our country, along with many other irrational assumptions, that have made so many people like myself question the integrity of the government. With absolute blind determination they continue down the same outdated and unscientific response to this health issue. At best, we are seeing a government not able to adjust its trajectory during a crisis. At worst, we are seeing a wilful decimation of our people based on some sort of ulterior motive. Which ever it may be, the entire government lacks the transparency and accountability to be trusted by New Zealanders. With the rushing through of many laws during lockdown, Draconian bills that allow for unwarranted home entry, continual regulations and restrictions on Farming and Agriculture, proposed restrictions on free speech and a government-controlled internet censorship, we are sailing dangerously close to the Socialist/Communist regimes that has caused the collapse of some many countries and sadly the deaths of millions worldwide. I am not just fighting for Nelson, I am fighting for my children’s future and my children’s children’s future here in New Zealand.”

I stand for Justice, Righteousness, Truth and Freedom. I stand for the unborn, for the youth, for the homeless and the fatherless. I value life to the very end. I stand with Tangata Whenua to help promote, protect and preserve their customs, traditions, wairua and values. If ever there was a time to have a strong Christian voice championing Godly values and principles as a political and social reality in Aotearoa New Zealand, it’s now! Bruce Dyer has managed the Nelson Enterprise Loan Trust since 1997. It’s made 300 loans totalling $2.5m with a 98% repayment rate. His Master’s degree, completed in 2017, studied the Nelson region becoming more selfreliant. Jim Bolger recently called for a new economic model. The current profit-driven, market model is failing to meet our housing needs, to lift our families and children out of poverty, to address our high youth suicide rates and to stop 4000 plants and animals becoming extinct. The Progressive Party is offering that new model – a holistic model that recognises our physical, mental and spiritual dimensions. Such a model would see: • the state building houses • income tax replaced by taxes on production. • a full employment policy and just minimum wage that covered basic needs - food, clothing, housing, medical care and education • inequality reined in by linking low and high wages together • large businesses like supermarkets and rest homes incentivised to run as cooperatives, thereby making the economy more democratic.

I’m a father-of-three, a geologist, and the founder of a Nelson-based scientific editing business that employs 35 people and serves clients worldwide. I’m the Green Party candidate for Nelson because I care about social and environmental justice, and because I want a better world for all of our children. This election should be a contest of ideas and of vision. During this campaign the Greens have released bold policies to address child poverty, tax reform, inequality, housing, transport, clean energy, protection of our oceans, the future of farming, and the climate crisis, because we believe that success should be measured in terms of community well-being and healthy nature. For too long, previous governments have limited their focus to economic growth at the expense of affordable housing, public services, equality, and nature. Today, in the midst of the Covid and climate crises, we find ourselves at a crossroads, with the opportunity to reimagine our future. Unlike the other parties, the Greens have a plan and policies to ensure we don’t slide back into the old systems that have delivered such poor outcomes for people and the environment. In Nelson, these policies would deliver affordable home ownership, and fair and secure tenancies for people who rent, in homes that are safe, warm, and dry. They would deliver greater investment in schools and healthcare, and protect our natural areas such as the Maitai Valley and Railway Reserve, ensure safe cycling and walking routes to schools, and high-density living in a pedestrianized central city that would be good for business and be built for people and creativity rather than cars and pollution. They would deliver regenerative agriculture that is kind to our rivers and lakes, and that puts healthy local produce on the table. They would ensure that Nelson genuinely lives up to its aspiration of being a smart little city. Only the Greens have the courage and vision to deliver a fairer, cleaner future for all of us, so please Party Vote Green, for people and planet.

“I enjoy my road rides with my mates, we go a lot. On one ride I was feeling crook - I thought I might have indigestion. What was actually happening was a heart attack! A call to 111 saw the arrival of the rescue helicopter. I knew the crew because I was a long-time sponsor- boy was I glad to see them! They saved my life. I am lucky to be alive.”

“When I knew the helicopter was coming there was a sense of relief because we didn’t know what was happening to Brydie and we live rurally without any emergency services close by. Things calmed down in our house once we knew they were sending the helicopter, we knew help wasn’t far away. That relief was amazing.”

“It was blowing a 70 knots south easterly in Port Ligar, a gust of wind blew the hatch down and it hit my head. There was a lot of blood. It would have taken us eight hours steaming in the boat to get back, without the helicopter and the crew I wouldn’t be alive today.”

Calls for Stoke youth park gets louder Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Stoke skaters have been longing for a proper park to spin their wheels. It’s been almost a decade since requests for a skate park were first made but, despite numerous calls, the park remains a pipe dream. The largely unused carpark adjacent to Marsden Rec has been touted as an ideal location.

In 2019, Nelson City Council installed a quarter pipe which local skaters have described as “sad”. In a bid to draw attention to the demand for this to be expanded upon, local Blue Light members are teaming up with Stoke youth to host a community event featuring a pop-up skate park at Broadgreen Intermediate this Saturday. The event will take place from 2pm to 5.30pm. Committee members Cushla Vaas and Tiffany Venz says this

will be done with the ultimate goal of a permanent facility for the young people of Stoke. Tiffany says the current quarter pipe is extremely well used, and with schools in the area as well as Whanake Youth adjacent to the site, a skate park is a no-brainer. “They have just installed a pop-up park in town, but town is already well-catered for skaters.” Saturday’s event, sponsored by Cheapskates, will include giveaways, drift trikes, food stalls,

Mr Whippy and free sausage sizzle thanks to Mitre 10. Council’s group manager community services, Roger Ball, says council is working in conjunction with the community to investigate options for a youth park in Stoke, which may include a skate park. He says details such as changes to the existing quarter pipe will be dependent on what the youth of Stoke tell council they would like as part of this process.

“A number of sites have been considered, but the carpark adjacent to Stoke Memorial Hall, next to Marsden Recreational Ground, is the current preferred site.” Roger says when this process is complete, council officers will present a business case to the Sports and Recreation Committee in December for approval. If approved, the park will be designed and, ideally, work would begin in the current financial year.

Council's new draft plan open for feedback Erin Bradnock The Nelson City Council has unveiled its Draft Nelson Plan which will shape the city’s future with a focus on housing, residential intensification and climate change. The Draft Whakamahere Whakatū Nelson Plan brings together existing resource management plans for Nelson and has been in development for about seven years. Its first round of public engagement is open from this today until December 6. However, it will not be finalised until 2022. “Housing and affordable housing choice is a top priority for our community,” says Mayor Rachel Reese, acknowledging the council’s need to address rising house prices and availability in the region. The plan addresses an estimated population growth of 40,000 people and the need for 24,000 extra homes over the next 30 years. The plan proposes a ‘medium

density residential zone’ that would be a new zone for Nelson, aimed at providing a range of housing types close to the city centre. “This plan is one of the big tools that helps us with providing opportunities for good housing development,” says Rachel. The medium zone will enable a range of residential units to be developed. These would come in a variety of forms, from second dwellings and division of existing dwellings and two to three-storey apartments and townhouses with a height limit of 11 metres. The medium zone encompasses existing residential zones in areas surrounding the city centre including Fairfield through to the Brook and Hampden Street, Nelson East, Washington Valley, Nelson South, Dodson Valley and Stoke. This supports the Nelson Tasman Future Development Strategy’s findings that 60 per cent of growth should be achieved through intensification of existing urban areas. These findings were

approved by the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils in July 2019. The council's environment planning manager Maxine Day says climate change concerns are integrated throughout the plan. The plan takes a risk-based management approach to mitigate the uncertainties of climate change events. Since declaring a climate emergency in May 2019, the council says it recognises the need to prioritise a consistent approach in addressing the issue. The council are anticipating rising sea levels, heavier rain periods and intense storms, increasing the risk of coastal and river flood hazards. This will impact the council’s development of areas such as The Wood and Tahunanui, where the risk of coastal and flood hazards and liquefaction are currently being

investigated. City councillor Brian McGurk says the plan aims to combine an out of date resource policy statement, alongside an Air Quality Plan and the council’s Nelson Resource Management Plan. “We wanted to bring all the documents together to have a comprehensive view of what our regional council responsibilities and our territorial responsibilities are,” says Brian. This is the first opportunity for public input into the plan which, when finalised, will guide how the city uses its natural resources. “We want to make sure the community sees it as their plan and that it reflects their views and aspirations and how they want to see their city develop,” says Brian. The council will be launching this feedback period with a special consultation document, which

arrived in letterboxes across Nelson this Wednesday and will also be available online at shape. nelson.govt.nz. This initial two-month engagement period is the first phase of a process enabling the community to contribute to the development of the plan, set to be finalised in 2022. The next opportunity for public feedback will be held in early 2021. The council will be hosting community drop-in sessions across the city from the October 15. The calendar for public dropin sessions can be found at shape. nelson.govt.nz “The Nelson Plan is the community’s plan. We’ve built something that we hope reflects the direction that Nelsonians want to take, in terms of looking after their environment and how they want to grow their city,” says Rachel.

The Nelson Bowling Club’s Speights Premier Fours Bowls tournament is now in its third year and see 16 teams from throughout the country compete for a $20,000 prize. Mako bounce back against BOP Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The Tasman Mako responded to its first loss in two years with a statement at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. The Mako ran in five tries in trying conditions for a 33-7 win over Bay of Plenty to well and truly bounce back from last week’s shock North Harbour defeat. Consistently put under immense pressure, Tasman put on a defensive clinic. The team fiercely defending its line to concede only one try, despite Bay of Plenty’s wealth of territory and possession. Hooker Andrew Makalio led the Mako resistance while Jacob Norris put in a tireless performance at blindside and David Havili sent another timely reminder of his quality to All Black selectors. A steady downpour greeted the two teams who were meeting for the first time in five years. There was a late change for the hosts as Tyrel Lomax was called across the Cook Strait for national duty, replaced by Sam Matenga.

Leicester Faingaanuku on his way to score one of his two tries against Bay of Plenty at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Photo: Shuttersport. The Mako would strike a little over five minutes in as Leicester Faingaanuku found himself with acres of space in front and sprinted away for the opening try. After a prolonged period of sustained pressure with no reward, the Steamers finally opted to cash in on dominance by taking a shot at goal but Otere Black hit the uprights. A frustrated Bay of Plenty remained scoreless and its woes

were compounded when Alex Nankivell pounced on a loose pass and found speedster Mark Talea outside for Tasman’s second try. The visitors would finally convert its weight of field position into points as Black floated a superb pass to Chase Tiatia who went in under the bar, right on the stroke of halftime to trail 12-7. Tasman reasserted its authority after the break with a quick tap

by Finlay Christie setting his side on attack. The livewire halfback linked with skipper David Havili who, following a typically jinking run, found Faingaanuku for his double. Things got worse for the Steamers when Tiatia was sent to the bin for taking out a Tasman jumper in the air. The hosts then claimed the bonus point in emphatic fashion,

blowing Bay of Plenty’s scrum off its own ball and Sione Havili capitalising from the back. With the result in the bag, coach Andrew Goodman gave former All Black lock Isaac Ross his debut for the Mako while returning fan gavotte Kieron Fonotia also made his way onto the park. Another replacement in Blair Prinsep picked up his first try in Mako colours as the big prop used the wet surface to slide over from close range. Co-head coach Andrew Goodman was happy with how the team bounced back after their previous performance. “I’m stoked to get a response, it wasn’t always pretty but you could see the attitude was where it needed to be. There was a lot of improvement in our defence which we have been working on during the week. Tasman face a stern challenge next weekend as they head to Eden Park to take on Auckland.

Scorers: Tasman 33 (Faingaanuku 2, Talea, S. Havili, Prinsep tries, Hunt 4 cons) Bay of Plenty 7 (Ware, try, Black 1 cons)

Wet start to cricket season Jonty Dine

Finn Raxworthy and Kaleb McKay are itching for some cricket after several disruptions to the season. Photo: Jonty Dine.

The first round of the Nelson Cricket season was washed out on Saturday, further postponing an already agonising wait for players to get back on the field. Nelson College’s Finn Raxworthy and Kaleb McKay are both champing at the bit to get on the pitch after the season was cut short at the start of the year due to Covid-19. Kaleb, 18, will be looking to step out of his brother’s towering shadow this season as star seamer Jarrod McKay moves on from College cricket. “I will need to step up where he has left, improve from last year and also score some runs.” Kaleb says he has learned plenty from his brother, who made his first-class debut for the Central Stags in 2019. “It’s been really good having him, an experienced player who can back you up with the ball.” Though he admits Jarod is slightly quicker than he is, Kaleb says he will also look to carve out his own successful college career. Teammate Finn Raxworthy knows all about brotherly competition after plenty of backyard battles with twin brother Jonty. The two will bat in the top order while offering duel spin options. Both Jonty and Finn are entering

their third seasons with the First XI. “There will be pressure on both of us to score some runs.” Finn says there are downsides to playing with his twin brother, namely running between the wickets. “We don’t really like to communicate with each other, but we do it for the team.” He says there is a healthy rivalry between the pair. “We are always looking to get one up on each other but that’s just what it’s like between two brothers.” Kaleb will also captain the side as they hope to qualify for the coveted Gillette Cup. He says his task will be to keep everyone energised and motivated. “We have an experienced team but also lots of new players coming through with plenty of potential.” Among those newcomers will be year 11 Lucca Hemingway, who recently struck 65 against St Andrews and backed up with 40. With persistent rain ruling out any chance of play at the weekend, attention now turns to round two as teams will be eager to make an early impact. This weekend will see Nelson College meet Wanderers/Motueka, Athletic College Old Boys take on Whakatu and defending champions Stoke Nayland play Waimea Toi Toi.

Amateur boxers ready to rumble Jonty Dine

Rugby: The Mako women had a much-needed bye at the weekend after a dire start to its Farah Cup campaign, however things are not going to get any easier. Tasman will take on an unbeaten Canterbury side in Christchurch on Saturday. Canterbury are riding hot, taking maximum points from its first four encounters to sit at the top of the Southern Pool while boasting a formidable 200-point differential. The Mako on the other hand have yet to register a win and have conceded a whopping 279 points. Kick off at Rugby Park is at 12.05pm.

After a decade between bouts, amateur boxing will return to Nelson this month. The South Island Golden Gloves will be held at Dixon’s Boxing Gym in Richmond with almost sixty fights on the card. Randall Dixon says he hopes the event will be the first of many as he looks to bring amateur boxing back to the region. “Without the amateurs rolling we don’t have a corporate or pro event, we are wanting to run a tournament twice a year, shared between Whakatu and Dixons.” Randall says there is a plethora of young talent just needing the opportunity to compete. “Our gyms are packed with youths wanting to get out there, so we want to give these kids an opportunity in front of a home crowd.” The Golden Gloves will run from October 24-26. Tracey Ann Orlowski says it’s been a lot of hard work

coach says nothing beats fighting in front of your home crowd. Both gyms will boast plenty of firepower with novice Golden Glove champions among the fighters. A number will also be stepping inside the ropes for the first-time including

Tracey’s ten-year-old daughter Sailor Orlowski. “She’s been training hard and deserves a shot, I think she will scare a lot of girls,” says Dion. The weekend will feature fighters form Marlborough, Kaikoura, Waikawa, Dixon’s, Whakatu and Victory Boxing.

Cricket: Central Stags first-class captain Greg Hay is eyeing up a homecoming game as his side is set for back to back games at Saxton Oval this summer. The Stags will kick off its Plunket Shield campaign on the road before taking on Auckland on November 5 and Norther Districts on November 14 in Nelson. Normally a mainstay for Somerset’s Bath Cricket Club in the off seasons, for Hay himself it’s been his longest spell between drinks in a dozen years. The 36-year-old opening batsman has been in the best touch of his career in recent seasons which has seen the Stags lift the Plunket Shield twice in three summers. Hay was once again among the country’s top red-ball batsmen last season on the run charts.

Motocross: The Murray Thorn Motorcycles Nelson MX Championships will take place this weekend at 205 Tadmor-Glenhope Rd in Tapawera. Racing be held on both days with three races on the Saturday and two races plus a feature on the Sunday. Prize giving will be held at the Tapawera Tavern. Race registrations can be made through the Nelson Motocross Facebook page.

creating a dedicated performance officer role and introducing specific development programmes. Perhaps most impressive, however, particularly given the current global financial climate, Fabian managed to turn a profitable year for the first time in four years in 2019. All while overseeing the installation of a new turf and new scoreboards. “To make that turnaround in three years is huge, achieving that is important because we are now in a good position to plan the next years.” Fabian says he feels very humbled and happy to receive such a prestigious award.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House Deer Arrive In Nelson The ship Donna Nita carried the first deer bound for Nelson - a gift from Lord Petrie. Marion Dodds and her husband, William Hastilow, happened to be passengers on the vessel at the time.

Marion fed the deer carrots and hay during the voyage. Upon arrival, the deer were released into the Maitai Valley and for some years lived on the Grampians behind Nelson College.

He has been recognised as the best hockey administrator in the country but Nelson’s Fabian Amor refuses to accept sole credit for the rise of the sport in the region. Fabian was last week named Hockey New Zealand’s 2019 Administrator of the Year after joining Nelson Hockey as operations manager in 2017. While humbled, Fabian says he has not been alone in helping Nelson Hockey reach new heights. “A lot of people who have been doing a lot of work like the clubs, coaches, players, umpires, staff, board, all different areas, have been doing their job. So, this is more of a recognition of the Nelson Hockey community which is the important thing for me.” Among his notable achievements since arriving in Nelson, Fabian helped institute a multi-sport holiday programme. In 2019, Fabian oversaw the establishment of a Super League competition for the associations located at the top of the South Island. Fabian ran the Hatch Cup in Nelson, a junior tournament which saw up to 20 games a day. He has also helped improve the overall quality of junior sides by
