Industry predicts steady property prices Kate Russell Nelson’s property market is busy playing catch-up after four weeks of “pent-up” listings that were hindered by the Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown. In just the first two days of Level
3, TradeMe Property reported 35 new rental listings and 25 houses for sale in Nelson. General manager for Summit Property Management, Stewart Henry, says they’ve had to adapt to strict new criteria for rentals. “We are now allowed to show
rental properties, but there are rules. We’re can only have two parties through each property and only two people in their bubble can look.” Because of this, he says people shouldn’t be “browsing” and only enquiring if they are serious on a
certain rental. “The demand for rentals is there, but you’ve got to remember we’ve got a four-weeks pent-up on people not being able to get through. “We’ve also had a whole month of not being able to take on any new
stock, and people haven’t been able to move out. We’re basically just on catch up at the moment.” Stewart says he hasn’t seen Covid-19 have any influence on rental prices.

Classrooms are set up so children are two metres apart, and instead of desks they each have their own table. “We let them bring a cuddly toy to school, as we can’t give them cuddles,” says principal Barbara Bowen. This is what Level 3 school looks like. “The children that are here are

“It hasn’t had an impact yet, the cost of median rent has not changed.” Rental property inspections can’t happen until we reach Level 2, but he says property managers have made a point of checking in with tenants and owners. Meanwhile, Nelson real estate agents got the go-ahead to show potential buyers through homes last week - but they have had to adapt to how they do this. Kate Bradley, owner of RE/MAX EliteNelson says they are allowed to bring up to two groups of up to two people through a property each day. “The vendor will go out, and we go in and open up all the doors and cupboards. The potential buyers have to wait in their car and will then go in with gloves and sanitiser.”
The viewings are “reasonably fast” and contact tracing is a must. “It’s really not as laid back as it used to be - there’s no more stopping in the lounge to have a chat.” Kate says they have had to embrace technology to help them create connections with both buyers and vendors. “We are an industry of ‘hello and shake my hand’ so we are having to create that relationship in different ways.” This includes doing virtual viewings and appraisals, creating videos of properties and Face Timing vendors to answer any questions. “It’s teaching us new skills and those than can adapt will succeed.” She says the demand for property is still there from serious buyers, but the low level of stock coming through is no change from pre-

Close Covid contacts come back negative Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Testing results of close contacts of Nelson’s most recent Covid-19 case, including her Stoke supermarket co-workers, have come back negative. Nelson Marlborough Health clinical director of public health says investigations into the source of the case, confirmed on 29 April, are ongoing. However, he said that while the case may be travel-related, this does not necessarily mean that the case originated in the country of travel. He says that travel-related cases can also be caused by contact with an infected passenger on a flight or at an airport in transit. He says that current evidence suggests there is no community transmission in the Nelson region, and that the risks to the public from this case are very low. This is because the case was not working in a predominantly customer-facing role before the positive test results came in. The Stoke New World worker also went into isolation at home, wore a facemask in the workplace, no close contacts of the case have tested positive, the case did not have a cough or sneeze and the case maintained

Meanwhile, the number of people lining up to get assessed for Covid-19 tripled over the weekend as news of the confirmed case in the city filtered through. According to Nelson Marlborough Health, the number of people assessed over the weekend was 301, with 271 getting tests. This was up on previous several weekend of 98 people getting assessed and 90 people getting tested. On Friday, the Ministry of Health confirmed the new case in the region. The woman

This is the first case confirmed in the Nelson Marlborough region since 9 April. However on Monday, it was the first time since monitoring began that no new cases in New Zealand were reported. In Nelson, there are still 23 confirmed cases and five probable cases. Almost all these cases have recovered, and have not had any symptoms for 10 days. All cases are thought to be travel-related and there is no strong evidence of a community outbreak in the region.

Hospitality in the time of corona Jonty Dine
From burgers and butter chicken to coffee and kebabs, Nelsonians were sure to get their fast food fix once Level Four lockdown lifted. Eateries around the city are adapting to the new normal with contactless deliveries, limited menus and no in store dining. Burger Culture owner Chris Williams says it’s a strange feeling being busy with no customers inside. “Cooking people food but not seeing them is very odd. It doesn’t quite feel like hospitality at the moment.” Despite the setback, Chris is confident they will recover from the crisis.
“Nelson have got our back, we are super blessed to have people support us, I couldn’t thank them enough.” Chris says the love for their burgers was evident with pre orders flying in before the country reverted to Level Three. “People have been ready and rearing, 12pm Tuesday was crazy, that night was absolutely mad.” The Trafalgar St restaurant have been selling up to 200 burgers a day. “They have been wanting to get that fix.” With the added pressure in the kitchen, Chris says customers have been very understanding about delays. It’s not just takeaway food locals have been itching to get their hands on.
Front of House at the Red Art Gallery Café, Angelie Cartagema, says there has been a steady rush of customers wanting a barista-made caffeine hit. She says she is very happy to be back at work but anticipates some busy days ahead. Manager Iona McLean says it’s been great to see regulars back after five weeks out. “There is still a lot of uncertainty, but we will get through it as a team and we have got a really good local customer base. We have seen already that they are supporting us.” With restrictions still in place, they have had to change their operations in order to open. “We have adapted the menu and doing everything through

the window, we are also doing online orders.” The Taaj Indian Restaurant and Cafe also reopened its doors last week. Manager Arun Kumar says last Tuesday night was “crazy” with scores of customers craving curries. However, after the initial influx, business has slowed.
“We are a bit concerned about how the next few weeks will be, it’s a bit of a tough time.” Open for takeaway only, Arun says they are trying to keep as few people working as possible and minimizing distance between them. “It’s totally different, we just need to be safe and look after one another.”

Tourism industry calls on local support Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson is planning its economic recovery in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the tourism industry is calling on locals to help. Visitor destination manager at the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Gisela Purcell, says while people are itching to leave their houses, they don’t have to leave their home to have extraordinary experiences. once lockdown is lifted and supporting local businesses. Though it is in hibernation at the moment, Gisela says the tourism industry will be revived. Her and her team at the NRDA are writing a destination management plan for the restart and recovery of the visitor sector. She says the purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the community and find out what activities people want to do in the region. She says visitors have loved coming to the Nelson Tasman region but right now the whole
tourism industry has come to a sudden stop. The hope is that Nelsonians will help stimulate the local economy. “We would love to see people just have a weekend away in Golden Bay, Mapua or Murchison, there are so many places you can visit or a weekend but stay in the region.” All who complete the survey will go into the draw to win a hamper of local goods. “We want the industry to be something locals are proud of.” To fill out the survey go to https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/visitnelsontasman

“It’s been a lot easier that we thought, the first day we were all a bit nervous. The children are very restricted with their movement, but teachers have been able to think of games they can play with physical distancing.” Student Brooklyn Clark says she is happy to be back at school as it “got a bit boring” being locked up at home. Barbara says there are still a lot of “what ifs” for what school under Level 2 will look like but says the Ministry of Education have been good at giving them the time and information to adapt. The Ministry reported that 660 students from the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast region attended school on Monday, which is three percent of total roll numbers. Just six children are attending Victory Primary School in Level 3, according to deputy principal Glenda Rapley. “We have one bubble with two teachers. The health and safety of our students and staff has a very high
priority and during this time we have had as few people, physically at school as possible.” Nelson Central School has 18 children attending, while Clifton Terrace School has an average of 10 per week. “Our attendees are very happy and seem to be enjoying life in their new bubbles,” says Principal Rob Wemyss. While most secondary school students continue to learn from home, a small number are on site. Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson says they have only had between four and six students each day, who have been supervised within a bubble working on their home learning programmes. “We are breaking up the day by ensuring they have some physical activity as well.” Early childhood centres across the region are also continuing to operate. On Monday, 224 children from the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast region attended an ECE service - four percent of the total roll number, and 37 per cent had children onsite.

Emergency funds NMIT boss resigns available for locals Staff Reporter
Staff Reporter The Fifeshire Foundation has distributed more than $16,000 in emergency aid to residents in Nelson and Tasman who have been financially affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The foundation has helped local residents in crisis or hardship for more than 25 years with financial support for living expenses. In March, following the swift movement of New Zealand from Level 2 to full lockdown in Level 4, the foundation’s trustees created an emergency programme to provide relief to families that have been affected specifically by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. Support includes money for immediate essential needs: food, firewood, and power. Chair Don Everitt says the trustees were prepared to step in quickly, given how difficult the complete lockdown was expected to be for people struggling to cope with financial concerns due to the crisis. Within days, some of the organisation’s long-time donors also raised their hands to help,
and donations from first-time donors have also been coming through the door as well. “We are familiar with helping in a crisis and so the Covid-19 pandemic was something we wanted to gear up for quickly. Not only did staff prepare an application and a process within days, some of its most dedicated contributors raise their hands to help out. “We’re so grateful to be able to help our community right now at such a critical time.” Applicants for the emergency programme are required to demonstrate they have been put into hardship or domestic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A streamlined application is available online or on paper. Trustees review the applications at least weekly, if not more frequently, and procedures are in place to quickly provide the assistance in way that meets the Government’s safety restrictions for Levels 4, 3 and so on. Throughout April, the foundation set up the programme, reviewed the first applications, and distributed aid to 37 approved applicants. New
applications arrive daily and if an application doesn’t meet the Covid-19-specific criteria, it will be considered through the foundation’s normal application process, which is still running on a monthly schedule. Manager Leanne Churchill initially spread word of the programme through existing relationships and channels, such as social workers, social support, and community agencies across the region as well as MSD, Work and Income, and the DHB. Don says: “We’ve been a bit busy getting the Emergency Programme underway and in the meantime, new donors to our organisation have found us and have made contributions in addition to our regular supporters, which is really rewarding. We haven’t had to ask people to help out, they’ve done it all on their own, which is really rewarding. We have a tremendously caring community.” The Emergency Programme application and criteria can be found on the Foundation’s website, www. fifeshirefoundation.co.nz.

Nelson trio up for children’s song award Locally Owned and Operated
Kate Russell A Nelson trio have been nominated for an award in this year’s New Zealand Children’s Music Awards. Kath Bee, Doug Stenhouse and 12-year-old Joelle Noar’s ‘I Love Life’ has been named as a finalist for the APRA Best Children’s Song. The song was written by Kath and Doug and sung by Joelle - who inspired the song after writing a letter five years ago to her older teenage self, reminding her not get angry - because she loved life. Kath saw the letter on Facebook and asked if she could write a song about it, and the final result was released in December last year. “We’re all pretty excited it’s in the finals. Doug and I wrote this song together so it really was a team effort,” says Kath. “The people who are listening to it really love it, and at this time, it sends a really positive message.” Joelle, who attends Broadgreen Intermediate School, has been a

Book fair postponed Kate Russell
Nelson book lovers will have to wait a bit longer for this year’s Founders Book Fair, with the event being postponed due to Covid-19. With the high volume of people predicted to attend the nine-day event, which was scheduled to start on 30 May, Nelson City Council say it is not possible to run it in a contactless way. Run by The Friends of Founders Trust, the fair attracted over 12,000 visitors last year. Books are donated all year round and dedicated volunteers will start collecting again as soon as we are in Alert Level 2. It is hoped that the event can proceed later in the year if restrictions are lifted. Chair of the community services committee Matt Lawrey says that while the delay is disappointing, postponement is infinitely better than cancellation, which has been the fate of many events across the country. “Not only is Founders Book Fair loved by Nelsonians young and old, it’s also a major fundraiser for the park, so we really want to make sure it still takes place. “It would be great if Nelsonians with books to donate can just hold onto them until we get to Level 2. Hopefully, if we continue to unite against Covid-19, the wait won’t be long.” The event started back in 1988 and is now a Queen’s Birthday weekend tradition for many Nelsonians as well as visitors to the region.

MP loses bet to Bishop Staff Reporter
Nelson MP Nick Smith was never going to keep his $100. On Monday, Nelson’s Bishop Steve Maina and Nick successfully completed the Red Cross “Stick to your Bubble – but not your ouch” fundraising challenge by running 71 kilometres over the last week. “The runs have pushed me to my limit and the Bishop left me in his dust, averaging 45 minutes per 10 per km to my 60 minutes,” says Nick. “I asked the Bishop for a piggyback for the last 11 kilometres so I could stay closer to his pace, but he rightly declined saying it would breach Level 3 two metre social distancing rules. He kindly let me win the last 11 kilometre run by the required two metre social distance.” The ‘loser’ of the bet was required to donate an extra $100 to the Red Cross. Bishop Steve says it has been wonderful to combine his love of running with this good cause. “Nelson has so many good tracks and the Autumn sunsets have been beautiful. I have appreciated the friendly rivalry with Nick and as a
consolation, I note he burnt up more than a thousand calories more than I on our smart phone run trackers. I’ve also enjoyed praying for our city while running and I’m hopeful of the future as we recover from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic.” Bishop Steve and Nick are very grateful for the $1000 sponsorship from New Zealand King Salmon who have long been strong supporters of Red Cross. “They are a great local company that generously support so many causes, most recently donating salmon to Nelson’s essential workers,” Nick says. New Zealand Red Cross Nelson based Community Fundraising Coordinator Rachel Lake congratulated two for completing the challenge. “I am encouraging others to take up their challenge for their own health and to support a good cause. These funds will help our programmes delivering medication, food and clothing parcels throughout New Zealand. Our work in New Zealand and overseas supporting people in times of crisis or disaster is currently more relevant than ever.”

Lived in Nelson for 10 years. Now in the UK. You guys are lucky that your government did the right thing at the beginning. They didn’t here and now there's over 26000 dead and accelerating. Mark Wileman
Your Voice Journey back from the brink in bubble: Tears from reading this. I don’t know you but well done and chin up! We live in an amazing place - walk along Rocks Rd and to Tahuna Beach with your daughter. That will make you realise how lucky we are take deep breaths of clean air and smell the sea salt. Try to look up when you are down. Things will get better - keep smiling. We live in an amazing place so don’t be too hard on yourself. Count the positives each day, never the negatives. John Smith Thank you for sharing, I know what depression can do and all the ways it can drag you down. It’s especially hard to talk about, but what you have shared will help people. Keep strong mate, step by step, day by day, I pray you find peace. God bless you. Jude Caldwell An honest, real life, and quite frankly, touching read. Keep doing what you are doing. You sound like an amazing dad, business partner and man. Lauren Underdown Your article really moved me. on 7 February, aged 33. Nothing in New Zealand has been as bad. It is heathy and positive that different medical experts have been publicly debating management of the virus. The pity is the lack of transparency from Government. It was revealed last week that the Health Ministry advised the Government to close the border on 14 March. Cabinet rejected the advice. It would have been better to have first closed down the border rather than the country. The border was eventually closed but many Covid-19 cases including Nelson’s most recent, came into New Zealand during those crucial weeks in March. The Prime Minister has repeat-
edly justified difficult decisions on the basis that the Government was following health official’s advice. We now know that is not true. The Government is entitled to overrule official’s advice but should do so openly. The advice from health, treasury and other officials on the Government’s decisions to raise or lower Alert Levels determine whether people can leave their home, go to work, attend school or open their business. This advice must be disclosed and not weeks or months later. There have been similar problems with information about contact tracing and testing of Covid-19. I have had Nelson complaints over inadequate

Nelson Matters There needs to be greater openness from Government for New Zealand to get through this Covid-19 emergency united and able to recover from its global and economic impacts. It is good that New Zealand is doing better than most countries. People are making enormous sacrifices to contain the virus. This community spirit will be lost if people feel they are being misled or only given selective information. We know such secrecy compromised the response in Wuhan, China where Dr Li Wen Liang was admonished and jailed in January for disclosing early information on this deadly virus. Tragically, Dr Li died of the virus
New World Stoke employee test positive for Covid-19: Hopefully this has been contained … if it gets out there, we will all be in trouble due to the way people are behaving. The rat race is picking up momentum… tui and fantail song has already been replaced with traffic and sirens. Stay safe people, stay home if you can if not social distancing, and please wash your hands. Kia kaha! Chellz Carter

tracing. The media have reported the Ministry of Health taking 4 ½ weeks to follow up on people who had direct contact with others infected. These reports were rubbished by Government. We now know the Government had received a very critical report of its contact tracing system from experts that they chose to keep secret. The third problem area over disclosure has been over flu vaccinations. Dozens of Nelson doctors and patients have reported to me problems over access. The Medical Association has described it as a “debacle”. The Government refused to release timely information until it became blindingly obvious that the
doctors were correct. The other area where the public has been denied relevant information is the daily brief provided to Government by the Ministry of Health on Covid-19 since January. The public has a right to this information to know what the Government knew and when. Nobody is expecting perfect decisions in such trying circumstances. People are prepared to continue to make sacrifices for the community good and for the Government to wield enormous powers over their lives. But openness and transparency is crucial. Advert.

With winter almost here, annoying pests such as rodents, cockroaches and ants can start to infest homes and businesses. But don’t worry, you can call on the experienced, fully trained pest control technicians at Debug Nelson. “We are your allin-one solution – we can fix your pest problem!” says Debug Nelson owner, Shane Warland. “Although we can use different sprays and poisons to eradicate pests, we also find that educating
people is important.” Shane says they will go to someone’s house and may notice there is a lot of fruit on the ground under the fruit trees, so they will advise the homeowner that these will bring in the rodents. “It’s also important to trim trees back from their roofs because that’s how pests can make their way in.” The trusted team at Debug Nelson always strive for great service and aim for 100% customer satisfaction.

Keeping warm in winter is about more than just turning the heater up. If you’ve got a wood burner, you’ll know how important it is to get dry wood in early and store it well. There’s lots of info on Council’s website at nelson. govt.nz/burn-bright. Make sure you make the most of your valuable woodpile by operating your wood burner efficiently- get your flue cleaned before winter; use plenty of newspaper and kindling to get the fire going; don’t fill the firebox up too much – add less wood more frequently and keep a good blaze going. And do pop outside to check for smoke after the fire’s been going for 15 minutes – if it’s still smoking you are wasting valuable fuel. If you’re looking at alternatives, then heat pumps are the most efficient option if used correctly. Is your home insulated? If not, then look at the options for insulation – there are grants available from Warm Up New Zealand - visit energywise. govt.nz for more information. Burning damp or wet wood with a moisture content greater than 25% is illegal and usually results in smoky chimneys, clogged up flues, complaints from neighbours and risks the attention of compliance officers. The best time to buy firewood was yesterday, but if you need more now is a good time to get it delivered.
It’s best not to wait until later in winter to get your firewood as often there is very little or no dry firewood available, and what is there is expensive.

“When your passion becomes your job, it is evident in the service that you deliver to clients.” That’s what one very happy client recently said about Tracy Beer from Mike Pero Real Estate. And she’s not the only client who feels that way. Everyone knows that the best form of marketing is word of mouth - a recommendation from a happy customer. And the testimonial section of Tracy’s website is full of those happy stories. They talk about her excellent communication, her honest and open manner, how she delivers on her undertakings; about how energetic she is and how hard she works. One person mentions how Tracy is determined and effective, but also extremely kind and easy to deal with, offering advice, suggestions and five-star service. Getting the ‘service and results you deserve’ is Tracy’s promise to all of her clients, and that is what they get every time. If you are thinking of buying, selling, upsizing, investing, or downsizing, then give Tracy a call. She’s happy to provide a current market appraisal and offer honest advice and guidance. It came in like a wrecking ball and its damage to our local economy will be felt for a long time to come. The effects of the Covid 19 pandemic has hit local businesses hard and now more than ever we need to support each other in whichever way we can. ‘Buy Local’ is the answer. That way what is spent in town, stays in town. Nothing will invigorate the Nelson economy more than shopping locally and using local services. It will circulate the money throughout the region so everyone will benefit. After a month long hibernation, there was an almost audible sigh of relief in Nelson city when businesses could start operating again under Alert Level 3, although customers can’t enter any premises. Those of us who missed having our regular barista-made coffees or favourite takeaways are thrilled we can now arrange a
contactless pick-up. Same goes for local retail. Simply hop online and search for the name of a Nelson business, and if it’s something like winter woollies you require, browse on their website or Facebook page, place your order, and have it delivered to your door or choose the ‘click and collect’ option. In fact, any items you need, whether it’s a toaster, a blanket, a laptop or a phone charger, you can buy locally knowing that you are supporting locals and in turn, boosting the Nelson economy. After all, it’s local businesses which employ our friends, neighbours and family members. They will spend their money here, will give to local charities, support local schools, sports clubs and community groups. ‘We are living history’: Nelson locals record life in a pandemic Tracy Neal of RNZ Some of Nelson-Tasman will recall the Covid-19 lockdown as a month of basking in the golden Autumn sun. Others will recall being ill in hospital with the virus, the discomfort of the twizzle-stick test up each nostril, the agony of being forced apart from family members, or the abject fear of losing a job or a business. The effects of the global pandemic on the region are to be documented for future generations in a collaboration between the Nelson Provincial Museum and Nelson Public Libraries. The Nelson Provincial Museum was founded in 1841 as the Literary and Scientific Institution of Nelson. Chief executive Lucinda BlackleyJimson said the global reach of Covid-19 was likely to be a defining moment in the history of the 21st century. “We are living history. This is one of the moments that the people who come after us will look back and see how we did, and how we experienced life. “We want to create a record that will tell our descendants about this time, which is a really extraordinary experience and one I’m sure we hope won’t be repeated quickly.” Blackley-Jimson said while Nelson had so far not been badly affected by the virus, it would remain a watershed moment of life before and after for the region. “There will be life before and there will be life afterwards: travel before this lockdown happened and travel afterwards.” The museum had already identified and contacted a cross-section of people for inclusion in the record, including frontline workers such as medical personnel, supermarket workers, truck drivers, first responders and rest home carers along with small business owners, iwi
representatives, diarists, historians, photographers and artists. Blackley-Jimson said they also wanted to hear from people observing lockdown at home with their families or alone, to the homeless and what their experiences had been like. “We’re inviting people to comment from their own particular perspectives.” To this end, the library has introduced a ‘Life in the Bubble’ campaign to connect with members of the general public. The library’s community programmes coordinator, Rosamund Feeney, said one of its hidden strengths was how it incited the telling of oral histories. Sectors of the community have been approached for forms of poetry, art, journals, oral histories, video, photographs, objects and crafts which were some of the ways to capture personal experiences of the country’s united efforts against the virus. Blackley-Jimson said some people were already recording their thoughts and feelings. “This can be helpful in processing what is happening to them personally, with their whānau and with the wider world. “But these personal stories may also become fascinating insights for people to look back on, and can, in a museum context, be simply invaluable for future generations.” To submit your story go to http:// www.nelsonpubliclibraries.co.nz/ library/life-in-the-bubble/

Awards recognise outstanding cricket Jonty Dine and Peter Grigg
The club cricket season was cut short by corona restrictions but saw plenty of impressive performances on the pitch in 2019/20. Stoke/Nayland once again claimed the Kirkpatrick Cup for Overall Team of the Year having won the 110 Over competition, the Ruby Rainey memorial Cup and the Bush Tavern Trophy. Charismatic leader Brendon Hodgson says it was incredibly satisfying to put another consistent season together. “To win team of the year is always a priority as it shows success across all competitions, so we are very pleased with that.” The season featured an aborted T/20, a Nelson-only 50-over competition which also had its final cancelled and the Tasman Premier League (TPL). Stoke/Nayland would lose the TPL title off the last delivery of the final to fall agonisingly short of another clean sweep of the competitions.
“That was obviously a huge disappointment, but it was a memorable game of cricket against a quality team full of representative players.” Brendon says finals are a funny beast, and sometimes individual brilliance can turn them around. “Thomas Zohrab heaped the pressure on us and ensured that they won a few key moments late in the game and they deserved the spoils.” The veteran says the club has a competitive environment and are well coached by Aaron Mallinson. “A lot of us have played a fair bit of cricket together now. We’ve had success putting scores on the board and backing ourselves to defend whatever we can muster, we are getting older as a group though, so we will certainly be looking to give opportunities to younger players around town.” Stoke Nayland have been the big dogs on the block for a couple of years and while they were by no means disgraced,
they certainly showed a little vulnerability. Generally, one of their top three batsmen, Darius Skeaping, Chris Dittmer or Kurt Pahl would produce a solid performance to get them to competitive totals. Then Hodgson, Ben Homan, Dylan Eginton or Paddy Howes would capitalise on the start. While Howes fell away slightly after his lightening beginning to the season, he scored a couple of centuries and is a class act. They also had a more than handy keeper/ batsman in Ricky Edwards and Stoke Nayland were the best fielding team in the grade. They had plenty of seamers to call on, with young Englishman Thomas Chambers further enhancing their all-ready abundant stocks. Timothy O’Connor, Ben Stark, Billy Guyton, Skeaping and Eginton ensured plenty of pressure on opposing batsmen. Their nearest rivals were of course the TPL champions ACOB.
ACOB all-rounder Thomas Zhorab had a sensational season. Photo: Shuttersport/File. Their three encounters with Stoke Nayland were all epic affairs with the overall run tallies from their three matches, ACOB 651 Stoke Nayland 650, amazingly tight. While ACOB had a core base of local players they also had Jake Milton who returned from England and they relied heavily on the talents of the itinerant student group of Thomas and David Zohrab, Josh Simpson and Nic Clark. BJ Barnett proved to be an astute
coach and he also produced some match winning performances with both bat and ball when required. Thomas Zohrab though was ACOB’s key performer however and he played just seven matches in picking up his 25 wickets and the measly average of 6.04 runs per wicket. He also backed this up with 255 runs at 42.5 including a century and was rewarded with the Don Salton Trophy and Rep Player of the Year at the NCA Awards.

Nelson’s pro gamer relishing lockdown
Cricket legend no more Iconic former Nelson cricketer Jock Edwards died last month, aged 64. Jock, father of Nelson Cricket coaching director Ryan, played eight tests and six one-dayers, and was famous for his big-hitting ability in the 1970s and 80s. An absolute legend of Nelson Cricket, Jock represented the Central Stags in 67 first-class matches and 31 one-dayers. Jock was also a mainstay of one of Nelson’s great Hawke Cup eras, the 14-match tenure that spanned 1979 to 1983 - among many other fine achievements in his career. There’s a story they still tell in Nelson about Jock Edwards. Legend has it he once hit a cricket ball out of Trafalgar Park and onto the back of a truck which eventually ended up in Blenheim.

While most sports have come to a grinding halt around the globe, video games have been largely unaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Nelson gamer Bailey Murdoch says a perk of the lockdown has been able to play without guilt. “Still being able to play the game while everything is going on is a plus, it gives us a reason to actually play since we can’t do a lot else so we don’t feel as guilty playing on a sunny day.” Unlike most athletes, who are limited with resources and equipment, Bailey has actually been able to improve his game during isolation. “I have not been able to work which has allowed myself to spend more time on playing my game which is quite nice since I’m not bored and isolated in my house.” He says this has allowed him to put in more hours individually and with his team, as they are

Despite the extra hours spent with a controller in hand, Bailey says the global crisis has not made life easy for him and his team. They recently parted ways with their organisation Mindfreak and the pandemic will make signing with a new one difficult. “We’ve been talking to a few North American organisations, but they have fallen through with the
economy not being as stable and not knowing how the virus will effect investments in the future.” Bailey and his team recently finished its Pro League season in third place and were preparing for a tournament against Asia/Pacific before a potential showdown with the best from North America, Europe and Brazil. “Once the information was out that the virus was spreading, we knew that the chances of these events
weren’t likely.” New Zealand’s national Esports body says the industry is “about to explode”, as Covid-19 restrictions flatten its competitors in the sporting world. Esports has been nationally recognised and the TAB has opened bets across several virtual titles for the first time. President of the New Zealand Esports Federation says Covid-19 is showing just how resilient esports is as it can be operated from anywhere. Following the sporting closures, the TAB said Covid-19 had created a “giant-sized hole” in its business. To tackle this, it opened esports bets across five different games for the first time last month. TAB customer general manager Gary Woodham says Esports are now contributing about $60,000 worth of turnover a day, up from $0. However, he says this paled when compared with the $1 million or more rugby and basketball turned over each day.

With sporting events across the world cancelled, reporter Jonty Dine catches up with Nelson’s stars who have been trying to still stay active in lockdown. “It’s a good time to work on that sort of stuff, it’s something I lack in so I’m taking this opportunity to really better myself.” She is also making the most of her limited space with a homemade chipping net.
Nelson boxer Ashley Belk with her home set up. Photo: Supplied. Ashley Belk, Boxing. One of the most promising young boxers in the region, Ashley Belk will not let the lockdown stifle her progress and has planned out her lockdown training schedule. “Consistency and staying in routine are really important to me, mentally and physically, so it was a priority for me to get my training organised immediately.” Ashley says the biggest challenge for her is training without coaches and other boxers. However, the young fighter says it can also be used as an opportunity.
Claudia Green, Cricket. Central Hinds cricketer Claudia Green was gearing up for the indoor world cup in Melbourne before the national lockdown. The tournament was subsequently postponed until next year and though disappointed, the 22-year-old says this provides her the chance to improve her game for 2021. “It’s a shame to have everything on hold, it’s just the way things are at the moment, globally. The flip side of that means there’s an extra year to train and improve.” To stay fit she has been lifting paint tins as weights. “It’s amazing how much can be done when you get creative.”
Lizzie Neale, Golf. Nelson’s most promising young female golfer, Lizzie Neale, is using her time in lockdown to work on the psychological aspect of her game. Golf is one of the most mentally challenging sports to play and Lizzie says the quarantine provides a chance to increase her psychological strength.
Tysxun Aiolupotea, Basketball. Nelson Giant Tysxun Aiolupotea had his biggest season to date cut short by the Covid-19 outbreak. The Nayland College star guard, who led his side to an unlikely spot at nationals in 2019, has hopes of becoming a regular for the Nelson Giants this year. Tysxun says his trainings have obviously changed from what he would usually do because he can’t leave the house. “Before the lockdown, my trainings would consist of more basketball related training. Now, I am doing more fitness training and boxing in order to stay in shape.” Tysxun says the biggest challenge of the quarantine is not having a proper basketball hoop to train with. Noah Malpot, Sailing. Nelson sailor Noah Malpot is longing to get back on the water. The 14-year-old was enjoying a stellar season before the national lockdown, winning the optimist class at the eighth

annual Sir Peter Blake Regatta as well as second at the Auckland Championships in early 2019. His success saw him qualify for both nationals and the world championships at Lake Garda in Italy. However, both regattas have been postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. “You can do a bit of fitness and tactical training.” Noah says he has been compensating with online sessions with coaches as well as a virtual regattas hosted by the yacht club. “It’s a lot of fun but not quite the same.”

The 18-year-old is in lockdown with his family on a lifestyle block near Mapua giving Keegan plenty of room to get out and cycle. “It’s a bit more of a luxury than people in town so I’m pretty lucky.” Keegan was in the midst of training for a four-month stint in Europe before the coronavirus outbreak. “It’s pretty gutting, I will maybe look at going toward end of year.
Jess Drummond, Netball. The timing of the national lockdown couldn’t have been better for Nelson athlete Jess Drummond. The rugby and netball star is 20 weeks pregnant with her first child and was set to miss majority of the season anyway. “It has actually worked out quite nicely because I won’t get FOMO (fear of missing out) not playing anymore.” She says while the resistance side of her training has been a struggle, Jess has improvised by lifting tins of baked beans and even squatting with her nephew on her back. Keegan Hornblow, Cycling. Nelson cyclist Keegan Hornblow is learning to enjoy riding his bike without the pressure of training for a race.

s w e N g n i h s Fi What dreams are made of Gareth Nicholson Paddling out across the backline, the ocean was like glass. It was just light enough to see birds in every direction and calm enough to hear gannets slapping the water’s surface from miles away. Everyone was out to play that morning. Seals were rolling around amongst the rocks, a small pod of dolphins joined my paddle for a while, and I managed a couple of nice kahawai on the troll. All before getting to my first spot! Arriving at my favourite spot, I didn’t think that things could get much better than this. I threw the anchor off the kayak with a juicy burley bomb attached and got a trail of pilchard cutlets going for good measure, before dropping down the first bait. What followed could only be described as ridiculous! I landed a good size snapper, followed by another, and anoth-
er, a big kahawai, small kingfish, another snapper. It was simply chaos. Having a couple 3-4kg snapper in the box already, it was time to go big. I rigged up the biggest circle hook I had with a fillet of kahawai that only a monster could swallow and watched it drift slowly into the depths. About halfway down, the line stopped and headed away from the kayak at speed. Giving it an eternity to swallow, I tightened up and ON DAD! The reel started screaming, this was the fish I’d been waiting for. After 15 minutes or so, she started to tire. I looked over the side to see a massive red-silver flank. My heart began pounding even faster, 20 lb? 30 lb? Then out of nowhere, I felt a nudge in the back and heard a voice – wake up now! Want some coffee, you egg? Back to reality, just another lockdown daydream. Hang in there, we’ll be amongst it soon enough!
