Port and Airport proposed to merge

EXCLUSIVE Charles Anderson Port Nelson and Nelson Airport are proposing to join forces and operate under a new company after looking for ways to prepare

for an uncertain future. The proposal is currently before Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council, which own both the port and the airport, 50 per cent each. The proposal, which is being led by the board of Port Nelson, began at the end of last year. The port started

to look at several options to help “realise synergies” across the two organisations, according to a joint statement by Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council. The proposal would see a new company formed and the councils’ 50/50 ownership transferred into it. It would be run as a council-

controlled organisation, or CCO. The operational structure of both companies would continue. However, the statement acknowledges that there would be “financial benefits” to the proposal and “increased resilience” across both the port and the airport. “In the early part of 2020, the

operations of both companies were impacted by Covid-19,” the joint statement says. “Whilst they are performing well, there is still considerable uncertainty about the long-term impacts on the global economy.”

Volunteering to keep bellies full Over the next few weeks Kate Russell is putting the spotlight on locals who work tirelessly to make our community a better place. Nelson mum Anita Watson knows what it's like to feel alone in a new city with a young baby. That’s why, when local charity Bellyful delivered nourishing meals to her during this difficult time two years ago, she vowed she would one day give back to them. And she did. Anita is now the Nelson branch coordinator for Bellyful - a volunteer role that she fits in between her son, Remi, and a 30-hour per week job.

FROM PAGE 1 “When Remi born, we had just moved to Nelson, my partner was away for work for weeks at a time and we had no family here. I was on my own and I was really struggling.” Bellyful cooks and delivers meals to families with babies or young children who need support, and Anita was the perfect candidate. “A friend who I had just met referred me to them. I’d not heard of the organisation before, and they delivered to me twice. It was amazing having that feeling of someone caring for me and being able to eat good food as well,” she says. “I said to the volunteer who dropped the food over, ‘I really want to give back’. I’ve never been the recipient of charity before, so I promised myself that

one day I would.” Her opportunity to do so came about in July last year when she took over from founder Sarah Kirby as branch coordinator. “For me, it’s all pretty much computer-based stuff that I can fit around my work. I try to keep up with the social media and make sure all the different departments of our branch are working well.” She helps to navigate a team of around 30 volunteers, six or seven of which are regular helpers. Each month they meet at a commercial kitchen for a ‘cookathon’ to prepare nutritious meals, such as lasagne, macaroni cheese and tomato and red lentil soup. The meals are then frozen and delivered when needed. Anita says they are always looking for new volunteers and

hopes they will be able to attract some fresh faces at the Nelson Connects Volunteer Expo next month. “We’ve got a lot out in Stoke and Richmond, but it would be great to get some people in central Nelson as well, just to take the load off. The beauty of Bellyful is you can do as much or as little as you can.” The expo is on March 6, from 10am - 2pm, at the Annesbrook Community Church. Organiser Jo Nicholls says it’s the perfect opportunity for anyone thinking about volunteering, with around 30 community organisations involved. Anita says for her, volunteering is all about connection and being part of something. “Giving back is obviously a really good feeling, but that connectedness is what motivates me to do it.”

Port and Airport proposed to merge FROM PAGE 1

Neither Port Nelson or Nelson Airport management or governance would comment on the proposal. Tasman Mayor Tim King says, should the proposal be agreed to by councillors, it will be consulted on as part of each council’s Long Term Plan. “Both councils will need to be assured that it is in the best longterm interests of our region.” Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says there are various options that will be put to the public to seek their views if elected members decide to proceed with a proposal. “It’s important that all options are considered against a wide range of criteria – not just financial benefits, to determine whether this change is in the best interest of the shareholders.”

Nelson at Alert Level 2: What you need to know Charles Anderson After a carefree summer, the placing of Nelson into Covid-19 Alert Level 2, until at least midnight tonight, will come as an unpleasant reminder of the dangers of the virus, says Mayor Rachel Reese. However, she urged Nelsonians to once again show the care, patience, and community spirit that was such a feature of 2020. “We've proven through all our hard work last year that we know how to work effectively as a region to keep each other safe. Follow Ministry of Health advice, use the Covid-19 Tracer app and remember how important it is to take the risks seriously." For those that are in the business of putting on performances, however, the Alert Level 2 news has struck harder. Gang Show technical director Robbie Burns says that this is the third attempt to put on the performance, which is a variety show by Nelson Scouts. It opens next Thursday. “We should have been onstage in July last year, again in September and next week. When the news came out last night it was very gutting,” Robbie says. “We are crossing our fingers that the lockdown

Mayor Rachel Reese says that Nelsonians need to show patience and community spirit. Photo: File. levels shift back on Wednesday night and we can finally get the production on stage. I don’t know how many more times these kids can have the show postponed.” But already, some shows have been cancelled. Theatre Royal manager Eliane Polack says that the performance of 'Howard Morrison Quartet Take Two' that was due to perform on Tuesday had to be postponed again. “We are talking to the promoters to find out if they have to cancel, or perhaps they can postpone again as the show was already postponed from last year. “We are all awaiting more news about what is to happen after Thursday. Fingers crossed.” Estère, who was due to play at East St this weekend as part of a nationwide tour, has also

postponed until May. Meanwhile, council’s customer service centre has reintroduced physical distancing. The Nelson Waste Recovery Centre at Pascoe St remains open, but all payments must now be contactless. Contact tracing will be required. The reuse shop will be open for customers to drop off items, and with physical distancing and sanitisation measures, will also be open for shopping. At Alert Level 2, people are required to wear face coverings on public transport or on a plane. Everyone should wear a face covering while on public bus services, unless they are under 12-years-old, or have a health reason for not wearing one. For full details of Alert Level 2 operations in Nelson, check the Nelson App.

Mayor defends rates increase Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson City Council will increase its rates about five per cent each year for the next ten years as part of its Long Term Plan, Mayor Rachel Reese says. Rachel says the plan was an interesting one to put together. “There is no doubt that Covid-19 has had an impact.” She says council saw many of its revenue streams reduced,

such as commercial rentals and parking. Rachel says Covid was never going to be a one-off. “I think we can now all see the impact is going to go for an extended period of time. For many of our businesses in the visitor and export sector, they can now see that borders will not be suddenly reopened.” The 2020 rates freeze was a direct result of the financial hardships people were facing. “We were conscious of the stress

levels for people dealing with Level 4 lockdown, so made a decision to hold our rates.” There will also be no increase in council staff salaries this year. “This is a really different financial environment.” Rachel says the rates increase reflects the reality all councils are dealing with. She says managing debt levels while still investing in some substantial projects over the next ten years will be a priority. Despite the financial challenges

of Covid, Rachel says there are a number of exciting projects in the plan. A recent audit of Nelson’s assets valued them at $1.8 billion. “They belong to people of Nelson. We are the custodians of Nelson’s assets and the money we generate goes back into the community.” Also featured in the plan is a proposal for a new library precinct by the riverside and an information and technology campus in collaboration with

Port Nelson. “I am optimistic about the future of the region and we need to play to our strengths. Many have returned from overseas wanting to invest and we have to do all we can to support private investment and development.” Rachel says the plan also incorporates the council’s responsibilities towards climate change. “This reflects what our community tells us is important.”

The 67-year-old, who has been invited to judge this Saturday’s Nelson Garden Show, says she can’t remember a time where she wasn’t gardening, having grown up on a farm in Canterbury. “Gardening is all I’ve known. My parents had an extremely good garden growing up. I was mowing the lawns by eight years old,” she says. With over two decades working at Nelson’s Mitre 10 stores, she’s yet to tire of the work and the people. “I just love my job, it's not even a job for me. I also love the people. New early learning food rules cause confusion Erin Bradnock New Government food regulations for young children at early learning services has caused some confusion for both Nelson parents and staff. The rules, set ahead of the 2021 school year, has highlighted highrisk foods that will no longer be served by early learning services. This includes popcorn, rice crackers, whole fruits and seeds. The Ministry of Education suggests that a range of food be taken off the menu by early learning services or is to be prepared in a safe manner to ensure children don’t choke. For instance, raw carrot, apple or celery should be grated, spiralised or thinly sliced using a mandolin. These new regulations require early learning centres to to reduce food-related choking for babies and young children. One incident in 2016 left a 22-month-old severely disabled after he choked on a piece of apple given to him by his daycare. He was starved of oxygen for 30 minutes, leaving him unable to walk or talk. Chief executive of Nelson Tasman Kindergartens, Craig Vercoe, says while the new food regulations have placed an “increased demand on whānau and teachers”, it’s important to

Stoke Kindergarten pupils Mileah Lotz, Dexter Ferguson-Tasker, Christopher Reh, Lianke Kritzinger and Jesse Knox enjoying their healthy lunches. Photo: Erin Bradnock. note that the requirements do not apply to food that parents provide. “Services are required to promote the guidelines and may choose to restrict the sorts of foods that parents can provide for their child to eat at the service. This is in the same way that some

services manage food allergies,” he says. At Stoke Kindergarten, it’s the parents that supply food for their children. Teachers Sue Knox and Kay Herniman admit there was confusion regarding the new changes. “A week ago, we were confused

at what the legislation meant for us. We’re having a healthy options workshop with families here tomorrow to further develop understandings of the guidelines,” says Sue. Kay says healthy eating has always been a priority for Stoke Kindergarten and children have

always been closely supervised while eating. Mother Emma Hill, whose three-year-old son is enrolled in a childcare facility that provides food, describes the new legislation as “ridiculous”. “The legislation should be changed back. The schools were already limiting so much to try to create healthy menus and eating patterns. This is undoing a lot of that which to me is much more important,” she says. Nelson Tasman Kindergartens services manager, Kathryn Sclater, says that the Ministry of Education has embedded the Ministry of Health’s advice into regulations. “So, kindergartens have no choice but to follow official government research.” Maxine Dunn, clinical leader for Plunket Nelson - Marlborough says Whānau Āwhina Plunket supports the guidelines. “The guidelines are designed to keep our tamariki safe wherever they are, including early learning services. Food-related choking incidents can kill young children, so it’s important to reduce this risk wherever we can. “While these changes apply to early childhood services and playgroups, we also encourage parents and caregivers to follow the guidelines at home as well.”

SALISBURY / CHAMPION ROAD ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE

From the week starting 22 February, we’ll be moving traffic onto the other side of the roundabout as work starts on Section Three, the corner in front of the supermarket construction site. Check the diagram for the layout of Section Three.

WHAT WE ARE DOING • Putting extra lanes on the roundabout to cater for increased traffic as our region grows.

• A new road to Champion Road West – left turn only from Richmond Deviation (SH6) – to access the businesses in this area (Active Explorers, Caltex, Crossbow Coffee Roasters, Eddyline, Hubbers Flooring, Jennian Homes, Moxini, Premier Services, Raeward Fresh, Richmond Aquatic Centre, Zink) who are all open as usual. See our website, tasman.govt.nz/ projects for diagrams showing the easiest way to access the businesses from each direction.

Chinese community ushers in new year Erin Bradnock Nelson celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year 2021 with shared kai, dance, song and community. The New Zealand Chinese Association, Nelson and Marlborough branch, hosted the Lunar New Year festivities on Sunday at Maitai School. The celebrations saw about 60 association and community members come together to welcome the New Year. The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many East Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore and South Korea. Association member Fiona Shi travelled from Blenheim to not only be a part of the festivities but to perform in a traditional dance that she choreographed. "We call ourselves the ‘Spicy Girls’. Our clothing is traditional Qipao which shows off a woman's beauty and confidence," she says. Following the performance, lunch was served with a variety of Chinese food, homemade by association members. Master of ceremonies Dui Dui Zhu has been a part of the association for four months. "When I moved here from Queenstown I was happy to see more Chinese people and culture. It's like a family here and we all try to do our part," she says. Organiser and association member Bic Hueng says the Lunar New Year is one of the most significant celebrations in Chinese culture. She says the association hopes 2021 will be one of the associations busiest years yet. "We haven't had many events in the past three to four years and since November we decided to pick things back up again," she says. Bic describes the association and cultural events, such as this one, as crucial for Nelson's Chinese community. "It's not easy for anyone to live overseas. I know when I came here, I missed home as well, and it helps for people to see their culture and to talk to people with similar experiences." The celebrations also mark the start of new Chinese language lessons to be held weekly by the association at beginner and advanced levels. “We want to promote Chinese language here and in schools. Some second-generation kids can’t speak Chinese, which is a shame and we want to change that,” says Bic.

Yusuf Corten is mourning the loss of his wife while adjusting to life as a single father of three. Photo: Jonty Dine.

The Wakefield Country Players are bringing Florian Zeller’s acclaimed play ‘The Father’ to life next month. The non-profit dramatic group have been putting on shows for over 40 years, with this one promising to be ‘bold, chilling and hugely entertaining’. 'The Father' centres on the character of André, played by Hugh Neill. Elderly, elegant, flirtatious and domineering, André is losing his mind to dementia and as his interactions with his family, caregiver and the world become increasingly confused the audience will witness the toll of his illness upon himself and those closest to him. “Country Players has been eyeing up this play for a couple of years. It’s a bit different from our usual offerings to the community but it’s not just all grim and dark, there’s plenty of humour and a lot to think about,” says director Peter Verstappen. ‘The Father’ is supported by the Nelson Alzheimer’s Society and proceeds from one performance will be donated to the society. 'The Father' is on at the Wakefield Village Hall from March 19 - 27. Bookings can be made by phoning 5418869 or emailing bookcountryplayers@gmail.com. Community rallies for Yusuf Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Yusuf Corten has been blown away by the generosity of the community after sharing his story of heartache. The kebab chef, who owns Kebab Kitchen on Bridge St, has been giving away free meals to Nelsonians in need for more than three years. At a cost of at least $1000 a week, Yusuf has long sacrificed profit in the name of kindness. But last month tragedy struck when Yusuf 's wife Rose died after a battle with cancer. Now he is trying to juggle managing his business alone while also raising his children, aged 17, 14 and 2. After reporting on the story, the Nelson Weekly decided to start a Givealittle page to allow the community to give back to someone who has given so much. With so much goodwill, locals did not hesitate to step up and help the Kebab Kitchen owner in his time of need. In just over three days, more than $4500 has already been donated to

the cause. Yusuf says he is incredibly grateful for the support and love shown for his family. One donator commented: “Aroha atu, aroha mai. When you give love, you receive love. You have shown much aroha to people in the community. Now it is time to be shown aroha in return.” Another says: “Dear Yusuf, you are a true treasure and light in our Nelson community. You give so much of yourself and it’s time for us to pay it forward, now you are in your own time of need.” Weekly editor Charles Anderson says it’s not often that the newspaper would get so involved in a story we report on, but thought this was an easy way to help a member of our community. “We hope that the generosity of Nelson might at least allow Yusuf some time to be with his children without the stresses of running his business.” To help Yusuf and his family at this time, please visit givealittle.co.nz/ cause/grieving-father-faces-loss-ofbusiness

NELSON BUDGET SERVICE Free confidential support for everyone

Last week in Parliament I delivered my maiden statement, where I talked about my journey to Parliament, and what I hope to achieve while I am privileged to represent the people of Nelson. While Nelson is the best place in New Zealand to live, we have some complex issues that we need to tackle. Nelson is one of the most unaffordable places in the country to rent or buy a home. This is what I want to change. A warm, stable, affordable home is the basic building block needed for families and communities to thrive. I am firmly of the view that if we can improve people’s housing, we can improve other outcomes for them; in health, mental health, employment, education and household income. We also need to solve some of our transport issues using modern transport solutions that promote active transport like walking and cycling, and lifting wages and conditions for workers across our region. These are the issues I will focus on while I am privileged to represent the people of Nelson in Parliament.

‘Eclectic’ Nelson band to rock The Boathouse, Wednesday, September 30: Nelson band Sonoraw had a successful launch gig at The Boathouse last October, according to band member David Turnhout. “We sold the venue out and the night went really well. The Boathouse took over $4,700 across the bar which they were extremely pleased with.”

Frustration over Delaware Bay delay: Why don't they just put a concrete strip down to the channel? Yes, it's a big disturbance to the estuary for a start, but it will keep vehicles and boats off the majority of estuary in the long run, so this is a solution to benefit all parties. Damien Jones

Come on people, common sense applies. Follow the wheel marks across the estuary, don’t leave a mess, be respectful and use Delaware to launch like we always have. Shane Brownlie Just use Cable Bay. Rowan Kerr

There is more than one iwi who have a historical connection to this area, so no do not allow. Kahurangi Hippolite

"Assessing options" which means doing nothing but still charging out. Rayon Mackenzie

It's called scaremongering, i.e - we will ticket vehicles. Who got ticketed? Scaremonger people into not using it, then they turn it around and say we monitored it for five minutes, no one used it, so you lose it. What would happen if we all said ‘sorry council, we use that bare land, you can't subdivide it and build homes’. They would do what we do, just do it and take no notice. Use Delaware or lose it. Merrick Allan

Labour began the year last week rushing a law change through Parliament under urgency that removes communities having a vote on whether their council has separate Maori seats. The NZ Herald described it as law making at its worst and reeking of arrogance. I want our councils to be representative and diverse, but I do not support separate Maori seats. I welcome that more Mao-

Big bike rack riles property owner: Is there a reason why it can't be put in Miller's Acre somewhere? That would be much more appropriate. Caroline Mew Ugly? Compared to the disused missile silo slapped on the side of the city council building, the bike rack is a work of art. Andrea Warn Please, bikes are much more attractive than cars and this is the way of the future. Read the news and move with the times please. Justine Whitfield I can’t see many of the general public getting the opportunity to use it. I’d bet money that it’ll be full of bikes belonging to NCC employees. Linda Hansen Losing parks at the cinema is a bit of a bummer, it’s usually full already without losing seven parks. Amanda Jay Thanks Nelson City Council, it is great to see that other modes of transport are being taken seriously now too and given some of the same considerations vehicle users are. I cycle on MTB, road bike and cargo bike approx 90 per cent of my travel time and am constantly being made to feel that I’m an inferior road user. In fact, I am not, I am one less car on the road causing congestion. I am two less kids in cars commuting to and from school every day. I am one healthier person less likely to become an unnecessary burden on our health system in the future. I am

ri, woman and young people are being elected to councils. Maori now make up 14% of Councillors nationwide, in line with their 14% of population. Exclusive seats for Maori or anyone else is inconsistent with the basic democratic principle of all voters being treated equally. All Councillors should serve all in their community. Separate seats encourages division. The Treaty of Waitangi does not require

one less person likely to struggle with poor mental health due to regular exercising. I am one less vehicle creating emissions which contribute to sea level rise. I am one less vehicle causing damage to roading infrastructure that will require rate payer or government money to repair. I am one less car taking up the car parks of those who need to drive. I am a ratepayer. I am a cyclist. It’s not too much to be offered some facilities just as those who use vehicles are. Every single one of us has a part to play. If we can make a change even just for one day a week, one day using public transportation, one day walking the kids to school, one day catching a lift with a colleague - this will start a flow on effect of change that will benefit us all. And all because of the loss of seven car parks. Rebecca Glen Trafalgar St is not the place for that size bike shelter. The one in the Montgomery carpark is good and in the right place. Dawn Thorn Sigh. It's a bike stand, it's functional. It essentially looks like a large bus stop shelter. Want to rip those out too? Halcione Hoare Sorry guys, but I have seen the one is Montgomery Square and I think it looks great. The more the merrier. I have no issue with it replacing a couple of parking spaces either. David Munro Fantastic news, Nelson City Council are moving ahead with the construction of the second dedicated, weather proof cycle park in the CBD. 53 New Bike parks is awesome.

separate seats. Article 3 specifies that Maori have the full rights of British subjects, not additional rights. The electoral system belongs to electors, not the elected. That is why referendums decide whether Parliament is elected by FPP or MMP. A referendum is provided for if Councils want to change to STV. The Clark Labour Government wrote the law providing for referendum on

Thanks for beginning to recognise cycling as a legitimate form of transport and offering some infrastructure for those residents and ratepayers who use it. Bicycle Nelson Bays Great discussion, though the placement of the Trafalgar St stand is about the NCC management team needing to provide a place for their staff to park 60 plus bikes. These staff bikes are presently housed in the old building on Achilles Ave (look through the building window) which now need to go somewhere else. NCC senior staff have allocated $100,000 plus of rate payers money to solve their problem, did not involve councillors until they got outed. Over the last three years bike parks have already been increased for the public. NCC regularly comment they are the most transparent council ever so why are they not fronting up to the rate spend? Bill Dahlberg I don't have a problem with bike racks and I don't care what size either, it is money well spent. Unless people are taking public transport, walking or biking the options for traveling into the CBD one day soon will be very limited for the Nelson vehicle driver. You have read the future plans from NCC and we are to become more environmentally friendly and less traffic congested and if you have read the latest announcement from our government, electric cars are on the way in and petrol fuelled vehicles are on the out. Kahurangi Hippolite Why waste more of our ratepayer money when the first one is not even half full most days? Council needs to get

separate Maori seats in 2002 but Labour now says its “racist”. The truth is that Labour does not like voters decisions. 21 communities have voted against separate Maori seats including Nelson in 2012, when we voted 12,387 against, to 3,192 for. Government officials have criticized the process saying electoral changes require thorough public consultation. Submissions opened last Wednesday

it together a bit better than this. Tania Johnstone

This was obviously not very well consulted. Put them in car parks? C’mon NCC, think a little harder, outside the box. Don’t clutter the CBD. Nelson needs to look nice - you said you were doing city beautification? This is not a good look at all. Darryn Gray

Gee, I'm still waiting to see some decent recycling bins around the town and at the beach. Frances Minogue

Yet another decision by the council backed by a minority that is going ahead after backlash from the public. It’s almost like someone has given them an open cheque book and said “it’s not my money, go for gold.” Liam Ryan

I believe one or two disability parks have been removed. I don’t object to cyclists but all those in one spot? Cat Lamb

So I’m guessing all the councillors will be biking to work now, best they set the example. Rachel Brownlie

Grieving father faces loss of business: If anybody deserves a helping hand, it's this man. I used to call it my local for lunch most days when I lived in Nelson a couple of years back. And at least once a week he would not let me pay for my meal even though I was able. And it was delicious. Get in there team. Nicholas Collins

but closed the next day. Usually it is 20 days. Select committees normally get six months to consider a bill whereas Labour reduced it to six days. Committee members like me cannot read the 12,500 submissions (78% were against) in this time. It is disappointing that Nelson’s Mayor and MP have endorsed the Bill and process. Nelson deserves better on decisions about how we are governed. Advert.

Nelson’s Myanmar community condemns coup Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

William Lum knows firsthand the devastating effect a military coup can have on the personal freedoms of citizens. The 58-year-old was one of hundreds of Nelson's Myanmar community members that marched through the central city streets on Saturday in the name of democracy. On February 1, Myanmar's

democratically elected leaders were deposed by the military. The coup has conjured dark memories for William, who was taken from his family and forced into servitude in the late 90s. The former police officer said through an interpreter, that he was made to carry heavy military equipment and would be beaten if he did not comply. "It was the worse time of my life. I was a newly-wed and had a young family when I was taken." William eventually escaped;

however, he would not be reunited with his family for a number of years as he had to constantly move around villages to evade capture. After moving to Nelson a year ago, William fears a similar fate for his two children back home. "I want them to stop making us suffer." William's children are desperately trying to join their father in New Zealand and calls on the Government to "please do everything you can to help them”.

The passion was palpable as protesters chanted, sang and even stomped on placards bearing images of military leaders. Nelson has one of the largest populations of refugees who escaped a military regime in Myanmar. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack announced to the cheering crowd that the New Zealand government has ended all political and military contact with Myanmar. A travel ban on Myanmar's

military leaders has also been enforced. "We know there are some New Zealand citizens in Myanmar, and we are working to ensure their safety." Rachel says she is incredibly saddened at the massive step back Myanmar has taken. "I stand here calling for the return of democracy in Myanmar." Rachel invites anyone with concerns for the safety of family and friends in Myanmar to reach out to her office.

Bringing hope to local students

Housing and transport top of agenda Charles Anderson

Jacqui Rawson Tai Tupou wants to let local students know that it’s okay to be dealing with mental health issues. After all, he knows firsthand what that is like. Tai, who is the youth programme development manager for I Am Hope, is speaking at events organised with schools to share his story and let them know that there is always support. “By having these events in schools our mission is to create the conversation to normalise issues,” says Tai. I Am Hope, a youth and community focused support group, is run by The Key to Life Charitable Trust, founded by Mike King. “We talk to the kids about their inner critic, the way we all talk to ourselves in horrible ways,” says Tai. He says kids often look up to adults thinking they are perfect, but the reality is nobody has all their stuff together. “Me doing what I do, coming and

Photo: Supplied. talking with the students, lets them know that adults are not perfect, and that they, the kids, don’t need to be either.” Since 2013, Tai and Mike have been to schools all over New Zealand and spoken to around 250,000 students. “We focus on the young as they are the country’s future and the future audience,” says Tai. After group sessions with students, about 30 or 40 of them will approach Tai and youth ambassadors that travel with him. Tai says the students will grab the opportunity of having someone

to listen to them and to share the issues they are facing. Both Mike and Tai give out their personal phone numbers at every school so the students can still reach out after the event. They listen and then Mike and Tai put them on the path to someone who can help them. “It took me 10 years to finally take education seriously after I left school and now, I have a Bachelor of Social Services majoring in mental health. “After I got therapy, the world was my oyster and my life had a complete turnaround.”

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack has used her maiden speech in Parliament to draw attention to Nelson’s housing unaffordability and its “gnarly” transport issues. “Nelson is one of the most unaffordable places for people to buy, or rent a home. This is what I want to change,” she said. “A warm, stable, affordable home is the basic building block needed for families and communities to thrive.” Rachel said she believed that if we improve people’s housing, we can improve other outcomes for people; health, mental health, employment, education and economic outcomes. “These are the issues I will focus on for Nelson for as long as I am privileged to hold this seat in this place.” She also said that Nelson had some “gnarly transport issues” which had led to deeply divided communities. “My view is that we need modern transport solutions that promote active transport like walking and cycling, better public transport and less

reliance on cars.” She pointed to former Nelson councillor and Labour MP Sonja Davies, who protested the closing down of the Nelson railway in the 1950s. ‘Sonja’s Railway Lines’, is now known as the Railway Reserve, should be protected as a walking and cycling route. Rachel also said that she was passionate about fighting for fair wages for workers, highlighted by the workers at Pak’n’Save Richmond who "have been struggling for a collective employment agreement and fair wages and conditions for over six years”. “During the lockdown, New Zealand’s retail workers were finally recognised for the skilled and essential workers they are. “I am now bringing the fight for supermarket workers to Parliament. Before I leave this place I wish to see a Fair Pay Agreement for all retail workers in New Zealand.” Rachel also thanked former Nelson MP Nick Smith for his “passionate and dedicated service” in the local community for more than two decades.

Local VCC club members, people who belong to other clubs, and members of the public are encouraged to bring their cars (old or new) to the Swap Meet and ‘show off.’

people like to sell other stuff too; things you would typically see at a flea market,” says VCC committee member/editor of Crankcase, Ray Robertson. The annual VCC Swapmeet and Bazaar draws a steady crowd from all over New Zealand each year, with similar numbers expected this weekend. “The event will go ahead rain or shine. People come with their trailer or ute full of parts and simply get

their raincoats out if the weather isn’t great.” Do come along because the swapmeet might hold some treasure for you, and there’s a range of food and drink stalls onsite, to keep you ‘fuelled up’ throughout the day. “It’s very much the same format as previous years – siteholders can move onto their site from 7am and the public are welcome from 8am.” The club’s new online booking

system for site registrations has been working really well. “Lloyd Ewing of Ewing Poultry came up with the idea – it’s similar to the kind used by accommodation providers and is saving our committee a lot of time because people are doing their own bookings online.”

Throughout the year, they do lots of fundraising for other organisations, but the swap meet is to help keep their own premises going. “The club is in really good shape. We have over 300 members which is awesome and we get new members monthly. We’re seeing a few younger members joining which is great, but we always welcome more.” Ray owns a 1978 Mercedes and a 1923 Gray an American car which is 98 years old. “I will be bringing them to the swapmeet. We encourage as many people as possible to come along, park their car on the bank and show them off too.” Ray says its always great to gather people from other car clubs or members of the public. “It adds flavour and colour to the event.” The Vintage Car Club would like to thank its sponsors – Speedy Print, Ewing Poultry, Nelson Building Society and Ian McCully Builders. New manager for car dealership Jacqui Rawson Ben Brownie started selling cars when he was just 18-years-old but now he has moved his career into top gear. Ben is now the new general manager for The Car Company across Nelson and Richmond. This comes as the two businesses behind the separate car yards have merged into one. “Ben has earned the right from his performance and commitment,” says managing director of The Car Company, Shane Drummond. Car sales runs in Ben’s family, with his dad being a car salesman too. Ben started when he was 18, but says being a car salesman isn’t something people think about doing because it's taught. Rather, he believes that you fall into it because it’s in the family or someone suggests that you should give it a try. The job has his full commitment after all this time.

Shane says he has his eggs in quite a few baskets and that he needed to slow down after 36 years in the game. “Ben has a bit more energy,” says Shane. The merger has meant some staff changes and movement between the different dealerships. With a bigger staff base in Nelson, Ben will be based in the Nelson office but will move between both. Part of Ben’s role is the group's buyer, which in the current climate is a more difficult role than it used to be. Ben says they have good supply systems in place in Japan but currently, rather than flying there to meet suppliers, Ben spends much of his day making bids via computer. “We’re no longer buying 40 or 50 vehicles a week based on one trip a month to Japan,” says Ben. Under the merger, Shane retains sole ownership over the The Car Company’s Tāhunanui dealership.

Each of these football clubs had their own proud histories and the decision to merge these was not taken lightly, but it was felt that by amalgamating into what has become FC Nelson, we would be able to offer ongoing opportunities to all our members that may not be possible while continuing to operate as smaller independent units. Today FC Nelson offers football opportunities for everyone boys, girls, men and women of all ages and abilities. We have close to 100 First kicks &

Mikaela's medals Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Mikaela Macdonald wins a lot. In fact, the speed skater’s wall of medals at home became so full, it collapsed. The 13-year-old now keeps her prizes in a box but says she will need to upgrade soon, as that too is beginning to overflow. Mikaela took home another impressive haul of medals at the National Speed Skating Bank Track Championships in Timaru earlier this month. The Nayland College student won five golds across the cadet division, setting a national record in the 1000m while finishing a respectable fifth in the New Zealand open ladies 10km elimination. Her rise to the top has not come without plenty of hard work. Mikaela averages about two hours a day of training, six days a week. “It is pretty full on.” Mikaela began skating at just seven-years-old when she received a pair of skates for Christmas.

Mikaela Macdonald showcasing her skills. Photo: Jonty Dine. She went to the local rink where she saw some other speed skaters and became hooked. However, her first stint into skating was not a successful one. Mikaela fell and broke her arm in what was her first ever outdoor skating session. She remembers little of the incident other than the pain. However, she was not deterred and was soon back in skates. “She did go backwards a little bit, it took a while for her to get her confidence back,” says mother Carissa. While she also dabbles in track cycling and volleyball, her focus

remains on skating. She has set 13 national records with a slew of other accolades to her name. At only 11-years-old, Mikaela travelled to Indonesia with a South Island team where she placed in the top three in a field of 15-year-olds. She says it was incredible to experience the different culture and hopes to return overseas one day with a New Zealand team. Mikaela says while she loves the social aspect of speed skating, her drive is to go as fast as possible and to keep on winning.

Griffins lose Hawke Cup Jonty Dine Nelson's tenure with the Hawke Cup has come to a screeching halt at the hands of North Otago. Just two weeks after bringing the coveted cup home, Nelson lost its first defence by a whopping 250 runs at Saxton Oval. Nelson made the perfect start to the three-day match, taking two wickets in the opening over to put the visitors in serious strife at 17 for four. Tom Dempster led the fightback with 43 and Ben Donkers' knock of 49 from 78 saw North Otago post what appeared a subpar 168. Josh Newport took five for 65 and was ably supported by wrist spinner Harsh Visavadiya, who captured three for 45. Unfortunately, Nelson had an even more disastrous start to its innings, crashing to 81 for seven by stumps on day one. Cameron Grubb got the initial breakthrough of last week's centurion Nick Clark, with Nathan Smith removing the dangerous Greg Hay for 16 and claiming a further four scalps. North Otago's second innings would see them consolidate momentum with half centuries for Tom Dempster and Smith. The challengers would build an imposing lead of 373 runs making the Griffins toil for 117 overs in the field. Number ten batsmen Grubb furthered the hosts frustrations with 46 and a 63run partnership for the tenth wicket. Clark managed 28 at the top of the order but Nelson never looked likely chasing the mammoth target, eventually dismissed for 123 to concede the match and the cup. Meanwhile, The Tasman Premier League champions will

Athletic College Old Boys has enjoyed a perfect run to the play-offs, winning seven from seven to carry the heavy favourites tag into Saturday's clash with Wanderers. Over the hill, the Falcons will host Waimea Toi Toi at Horton Park with the winners to contest the big dance at Saxton Oval the following day. ACOB was again in dominant form in round seven, picking up a bonus point in a crushing eight wicket defeat of Nelson College. Wanderers will head into the semi against ACOB on the back of a loss to Wakatu. A pair of patient knocks by Campbell McLean (87) and Fergus Hughes (47) saw Wakatu post 200/10 off 48 overs. Jackson Harris was superb with the ball, claiming 5/25 off his ten. Despite 62 from Alex Brogan, Wanderers would fall 28 runs short.

Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway drivers were on top of the podium around the country over the weekend. Jack Burson won the junior section of the Ministocks in Paradise event at Rotorua, Eddy Frans defended his South Island Production Saloon title in Greymouth, while Jonti Austin picked up his first TQ feature win in Nelson. It was a busy weekend in Nelson with several classes racing for club

championships. Brett Nicholls won the closed Super Stock club title, Campbell McManaway took out the Super Saloon Trackman Trophy, Jacob Skurr was top on points for Youth Ministocks, while Alicia Hill banked the most points after round 2 of the TQ club champs. Jonti Austin has also continued a dream few weeks in his debut season in the TQ’s, after qualifying for the NZ TQ final in Greymouth. He finished 11th overall, the highest placed Nelson competitor in the final.

Elsewhere, the Marlborough Dolphins ended its season with a victory over the underperforming Stoke/ Nayland. Josh Poole would fall just seven runs shy of a century and was ably supported by Tom Leonard with 73 as the hosts racked up 235. Stoke/Nayland was never in the hunt, collapsing to 135 all out. In Blenheim, the Falcons enjoyed a win in what was a semi final rehearsal against Waimea Toi Toi United. Setting 239/9 Waimea fell forty runs short in the chase, despite a superb 61 from 15-year-old Billy Powick. Veteran WTTU all-rounder Jon Routhan is confident his side can bounce back this weekend. Bronson balances barbering and balling Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Bronson Beri is used to his different worlds colliding. A professional barber and basketballer, Bronson is often recognised by clients and is also the unofficial hair stylist for the Nelson Giants. So, when asked to give an interview about his latest contract signing while simultaneously cutting my hair, the 31-year-old was happy to oblige. Having started his career as a Nelson College student in the 2007 Championship squad, Bronson is now the longest serving player in the current squad. After missing the NBL Showdown in 2020 due to work commitments, Beri will return to the court for his beloved franchise this season. “Not playing during the pandemic was a bit of a shock to the system.” Bronson is now a senior statesman at the franchise, a position that comes with its privileges. “When you become the oldest in the team you get forced into that leadership role. I get called ‘old man’, but also during offensive drills at training I always get to start with the ball.” Bronson says what is particularly exciting about the 2021 season is the abundance of local talent.

Bronson Beri, who is also a barber, has signed on for his 13th season with the Nelson Giants. Photo: Jonty Dine. “It is the most local guys we have had and playing with your mates is the best part.” Having started his storied career with a championship, Bronson says he has always had a fantasy of ending his career with another title. “I didn’t play a lot because I was still a high school kid, but winning it, I definitely felt part of the team. I’d have to force myself to retire if we won a championship again.” During his younger years, Bronson was offered contracts from a number of different franchises but opted to remain

loyal to the Giants. “To me, Nelson is the draw, it’s the best place to play in New Zealand by far.” Bronson has experienced plenty of highs and lows over 13 seasons. His darkest day came on April 4, 2012. During a match in Palmerston North, Bronson had just nailed four three pointers in a row and was the hottest he had ever been during a match. This euphoria would soon make way for agony as he collapsed to the floor. “When a grown man is screaming

like a little child, you know it’s bad.” Bronson damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and patellar tendon in the ‘trifecta’ of knee injuries. Sidelined for over a year, Bronson says he was forced to adapt his game when he returned. “I changed the way I played, I just tried to be a lot smarter and not run and jump as much.” As well as championship glory, Bronson also had the privilege of playing alongside a man he had long looked up to. “Growing up, Phill Jones was a bit of an idol, so playing in his last game was a special moment.” As a player, Bronson says he is able to block out the noise of the crowd, but there was one finish to a match where he could not ignore the noise. He recalls that he brought up the magic 100 points, meaning everyone in attendance erupted in elation as they had all won a free cheeseburger. Bronson’s talents are not resigned to just the basketball court.

He is also an accomplished barber, working at Chop City Barbers on Bridge St. “It started casually; at school I would always cut the hair of the boys at the boarding house.” Following his injury, Bronson started barbering more and discovered it was a passion. He is often recognsied by the kids whose hair he cuts and, if not, they ask they inevitable questions - ‘how tall are you followed by do you play basketball?’” Bronson also acts as a youth mentor, providing pastoral care as a tutor at Nelson College’s Rutherford House. “Watching them grow for five years is hugely rewarding.” Though he is hugely passionate about all three of his jobs, he admits they require a lot of energy. “It has taken a few years to be able to balance everything, but I need to start dropping back on something eventually, I don’t know what, it will all be pretty hard to give up.” Bronson is itching to get back on the court after a disrupted 2020 but admits he may not have many more seasons in him. “This could be my last, I play it year by year now.” As Bronson knows all too well, “you never know what’s going to happen”. But if worst comes to worst, I can now say from personal experience that he is pretty good with the scissors, too.
