The Mako were crowned kings of provincial rugby on Saturday, 13 years after the franchise was born. In what could be considered one of New Zealand rugby’s greatest rags to riches story, the Mako have risen to the pinnacle of our provincial game after fears it may fold just a few years ago. Trafalgar Park was transformed into a sea of red and blue on Saturday, the biggest crowd it had seen since the inaugural All Blacks’ test in 2018. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the win is the culmination of years of hard work behind the scenes. “It’s an amazing result, they really were a credit to themselves and the region tonight.” He says the city threw its support
behind the side with thousands pouring into Trafalgar Park to witness history. “This is the best provincial competition in the world and this is the biggest weekend the Tasman Union has had,” Tony says. He says the win means everything to the region. “It puts Nelson club and secondary school rugby as well as our academy on a plain where we can look at it and be proud of what we have produced.” However, the win may well have been the last hurrah for All Blacks’ veteran Wyatt Crockett. “It’s unreal for a province like this. It’s been bubbling away for a few years now and to get to the top of New Zealand provincial rugby is something very, very special.” Wyatt says the result is a credit to

The 71-test All Black says celebrations were set to go long into the night.
“It’s going to be a good party I think.” Skipper David Havili was elated following the final whistle. “It’s a lot of emotion, to finally get one, the feeling I have right now for the region and the boys is something I can’t explain.”

Preparing for the big quake Locally Owned and Operated
Tracy Neal of RNZ No amount of planning could prepare the country for the reality of a large-scale earthquake, disaster officials have warned. The South Island Alpine Fault Earthquake Response Forum was in Nelson last week as part of its awareness-raising road-show. The region was vulnerable to large quakes in both the South Island and the North Island, which was at risk from the Hikurangi subduction zone. The Alpine Fault, which runs almost the length of the South Island, has ruptured about every 300 years for the last 24,000 years. The last time was in 1717. Scientist Caroline Orchiston, who was leading the response planning for a possible Magnitude 8 quake on the Alpine Fault, said Nelson and Tasman might experience the equivalent of a magnitude 6 or 7 quake, with shaking lasting up to two minutes. But the effects will be felt far and wide. “There will be widespread damage to our lifelines

Photo: RNZ / Tracy Neal. infrastructure, in other words our roads, our electricity and water supplies, so it’s not just about what’s happening in your region. “In an Alpine Fault case it’s across the whole South Island, and in fact the lower North Island might feel the indirect impacts as well,” Caroline says. The head of Marlborough’s Emergency Management group, Brian Paton - who left his badly damaged Blenheim home to help steer the emergency response to the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake - said as bad as that was it was only a rehearsal for what could happen when the
Alpine Fault ruptured. He said despite efforts to bolster response efforts, the region was still not ready for the “Big One”. “An event like this would be so enormous that you could be as prepared as possible ... but when you have 30,000 people that need somewhere to stay, and one solution is to buy enough accommodation to put those people in, but that’s not the reality.” Engagement adviser Mike Heyward said the modelling showed up to 20,000 homes in the South Island could be damaged or destroyed in an Alpine Fault quake. He said there was no money to buy spare homes in readiness for an emergency of this nature, as the priority now was social housing needs. He said temporary accommodation in the aftermath of an emergency was likely to be basic. “Tents and campervans are realistically an option because they’re easy to get to places. “We’re trying to find all sorts of options and there are more out there - we’ve got to look at what other countries are doing and be better prepared for this.”

Mental health under pressure from meth Paula Hulburt The pressure is piling on mental health services as methamphetamine addicts seek crisis help. Mental health services are coming under extra pressure as the number of people becoming addicted to the dangerous drug increases. Health bosses hope to unroll a new, intensive outpatient treatment initiative before Christmas to help tackle the growing issue. A report to members of Nelson Marlborough Health Board revealed use of the drug is a “significant cause or concern” for a service already feeling the squeeze. Nelson Marlborough Health chief executive Peter Bramley revealed mental health services have experienced a high demand. General manager of mental health addiction and disability support services Jane Kinsey says she has noticed more people needing their help. Meth is a highly addictive stimulant drug available in pill, powder, crystal or liquid forms and has serious social, economic and even environmental consequences. “We are certainly noticing more people seeking help and that’s good but there is a definite upward trend. “As meth becomes become more embedded in the community it’s become more chronic - and it’s harmful effects. “Our referrals are increasing because of the demand. We want to be able to respond as quickly as we can,” she says. A new drug treatment initiative based on a successful American outpatient initiative, the Matrix Model, will hopefully be rolled out in Nelson later this year. Plans to expand the service to Marlborough next are in the pipeline. Jane says the impact of the drug is making mental health issues worse in some cases.
Charles Anderson The case of a Nelson woman, who was sentenced to prison for low-level methamphetamine supply, has formed part of a landmark court judgement which could see dealers have their sentence cut by 30 percent. Until the Court of Appeal released its decision last week, the quantity of methamphetamine was the most significant factor in setting a starting point for sentences. Sentencing ranged in five “bands” starting at between two years and four years six months jail for offences involving 5 to 250 grams, to life imprisonment for the most serious offending, involving more than 2kg. However, now judges have more discretion in their decisions depending on whether the individual is a kingpin making millions of dollars, or simply a street dealer. They can also take into account a dealer’s personal circumstances and whether they were addicted to the drug themselves. For Leanne Crighton, however, it has come too late. She was sentenced in

Tony Bamford is pleased that the courts will now consider the personal circumstances of low-level meth dealers. Photo: Charles Anderson. Nelson to 22 months in prison for offering to supply and supplying 3.75 grams of methamphetamine. However, her lawyer Tony Bamford says that Crighton should have never gone to prison. “She was your classic example of a low-level dealer that had personal issues. She was dealing to fuel her and her partner’s addiction.” Tony says a communitybased sentence would have been much more suitable for her. “She is a category of offender where you need a different approach not just send them to jail for 2-3 years.” Her case formed part of
the larger Court of Appeal judgement. Crighton started using methamphetamine in 2017 when she was 44-years-old. She became addicted and started to sell the drug at a small scale to subsidise her own use and that of her partner, to whom she supplied methamphetamine to ward off his violence. The judgement said that her relationships through her life had been marred by abuse and were characterized “largely by violence”. It said Crighton was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD after assaults she suffered as teenager. Methamphetamine was used
as a coping mechanism. Tony says the result is positive and he has about seven or eight cases that are similar to Crighton’s across Nelson and Blenheim, which have been awaiting the appeal decision. They will now have a much higher likelihood of receiving community-based sentences. He says people don’t realise how powerfully addictive the drug can be and the judgement makes this clear. “The drivers are the same instinct as survival. The need for the drug is prioritised over all other needs.” However, Tony says Crighton has now kicked the habit, is out of prison and has got herself set up. “She is doing well. She is not using and has got herself out of that nasty relationship.” However, the “elephant in the room” was whether there was the community rehab support for those people who now qualified for a reduced sentence. He hoped now that the money that would be saved by not incarcerating so many people would be put back into the rehab system where it should be. “The more political traction around that the better.”

Disappearance of Jessica now ‘homicide’ Staff reporter The family of missing woman Jessica Boyce say they have been bracing themselves for news that her death may had sinister overtones. Police have confirmed they were treating Boyce’s death as a homicide after she was last seen in Renwick on Tuesday, March 19, driving a red Holden Rodeo ute. The vehicle, which belonged to her mother, was located at the Lake Chalice car park in the Richmond Ranges on Friday,

March 22. However, police said they now believed the vehicle was used to put investigators off the track in the hunt to find her. “Police now believe that vehicle, which has been seized for forensic examination, was deliberately left in the car park in an effort to mislead the investigation. “As a result of their inquiries investigators have identified a number of other locations of interest in Marlborough.” In a Boyce family statement, they said they met with officers on last
Monday when they were given the update. “This has come as a shock to us, but we have been bracing ourselves for the possibility of such news over the last few months. “We still hoped that perhaps Jess may have had an accident or mishap; and even dared to dream that she may yet walk back through the door. Unfortunately, those hopes and dreams have now been dashed. “As yet, no details of what has actually happened to Jess are available to us. We understand
that the investigation is ongoing, and that the police continue to extensively gather information and evidence.” They remained united and strong as a family and hoped to find out what happened to her. “[We] would so dearly love to have her home. In the meantime, we will wait for the police to complete their investigation. We will face this waiting with the dignity and respect that Jess would have loved. They also thanked police and the community for their efforts.

Two people have been sentenced to life in prison for the ‘cold blooded’ murder of a Stoke woman. Tyler Baillie, 28, and Rose Morgan, 32, were sentenced at the High Court in Nelson last week for the murder of TraceyAnne Harris in February 2016. Justice Susan Thomas sentenced both Baillie and Morgan to a life sentence, with a minimum period of imprisonment of 17 years. The Crown argued that the murder
had been a contract killing in exchange for methamphetamine and cash. Harris was found dead in her home in Stoke on February 11, 2016, sparking a two-year police investigation into the cause of her death. With DNA evidence, cellphone records and witness testimony, police alleged that Harris had been suffocated to death with pillow after a failed drug overdose. Bailie and Morgan were found guilty of Harris’s murder in August after a month-long trial.

Tasman’s first Tasman’s journey to titans captain reflects Jonty Dine
Original Tasman captain Ti’i Paulo has experienced firsthand the unprecedented rise of the Mako. Ti’i led the Mako during its inaugural season in 2006 where it finished twelfth. After an 11-year stint in France, the powerful frontrower then returned to the region and the Mako were now provincial powerhouses. “To come back in 2017 was a real buzz for me and to see how far they had come was awesome.” Ti’i says the side has come an incredibly long way from those early days. “Thinking back when we first started, I wouldn’t have dreamed about them winning the whole thing, it’s a pretty proud moment.” He says the most significant change he noticed was selfbelief. “That season, will stay in memory for a while, the whole club and union had shifted to have confidence in their ability, I felt that when I came back.” Ti’i says the fact that just a
few years ago the competition was looking to cut the Mako, illustrates just how much grit the franchise had. “Having that resilience to stay there and become a respected side was a massive positive.” Ti’i says the fans played an integral part in helping the Mako survive. “Everyone just fell in love with the team and their relationship with supporters was always strong. “In those years, fans were massive, from Blenheim and Nelson in keeping them there. As players we were always mindful of the support, them turning up to the games and that buzz about the town.” He says a premiership title will be fantastic reward for the region. “It will be massive for the both sides of the hill, everyone’s been waiting for them to lift that trophy.” Ti’i says while the side has had championship titles and been ‘there or thereabouts in the premiership,’ this year was the time. “It makes me very proud to be a Mako.”

Local cops are trading their cuffs for cakes in the name of community safety next weekend. Cops with Cakes is a unique road safety expo and community event, combining road and community safety information with family friendly activities and lots of fun thrown in for the kids. The region’s emergency services will combine to showcase what they are about, with a few tricks up their sleeves to entertain the whole family. Tasman District road policing manager Grant Andrews says the day is all about bringing the community together in an informal environment to get to know emergency services staff and ask any burning questions. “We want them to walk around, feel comfortable and have fun, it’s a bonus that the kids get fed for free.” Giveaways on the day include
a 2000 ‘Copcakes’, an Avanti mountain bike from My Ride Richmond and a car seat from Baby on the Move Nelson, as well as a free sausage sizzle and ice blocks for kids. Baby on the Move will be on hand to check child restraints are correctly fitted which Grant says is something police don’t often encounter. “A lot of those vehicles we look at, most of them are incorrectly fitted in some way. It’s about keeping your loved ones safe in the car.” Grant says police will have plenty on hand to keep the whole family busy. “We are bringing along our impairment goggles which lets people know what degree of intoxication they are and how it affects their driving.” Police will also have an obstacle course, recruiting stand, and a child-friendly Physical Competency Test, which will be monitored by a police speed laser to try and find the fastest runner of the day. New Coastguard boat on horizon Staff reporter
Performers at last year’s Day of the Dead festival in Nelson. Photo: File.
Day of the Dead to spice up Nelson Staff reporter Founders Heritage Park is set to be transformed into a Mexican fiesta this Sunday. Nelson’s Día de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead festival is back for its eighth year, promising plenty of food, fun and entertainment. The traditional Mexican event is a day when people celebrate the lives of loved ones passed. The day is not macabre or morbid, but rather a creative fiesta and a celebration of life.
The festival started out as a familyrun event, organised by Mexican Nelsonian Jesus Ruiz Lopez. With the help of family and volunteers he recreated the Día de los Muertos of his childhood hometown in the south of Mexico. There will be an array of local food stalls and The Granary will house the bar where tequilas, local craft beer, frozen margaritas, as well as typical Mexican alcohol-free drinks like Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus flower iced tea).
There will be face painting, piñatas, a chili sauce contest and dance performances including Danza mi tierra - an independent project supported by the embassy of Mexico, and Auckland based Mariachi New Zealand. An ofrenda (“offering”) will be erected and visitors are invited to add photographs, food, drinks or a small memento of their loved ones. Día de los Muertos is on Sunday 3 November from 12 - 5pm. Tickets are available from eventfinda.co.nz
A $350,000 grant has come at the perfect time for Nelson Coastguard, which can now place an order for a brand-new safety vessel. Coastguard president Peter Kara says the funding from Pub Charity is a huge step forward in the organisation’s campaign to raise the funding needed for its much-needed new vessel, however, support is still needed to reach the final fundraising target. “We have one of the largest geographical areas to cover in New Zealand with potentially some of the most challenging sea conditions to operate in, but our current boat just isn’t what’s needed to cope with the increasing demands for our help,” says Peter. Volunteer-staffed Nelson Coastguard had to raise just under one million dollars by the end of this year to enable it to place an order for - and formally commission - the $1.3 million vessel it needs to continue its mission of saving lives at sea. The remainder of the money will be required in 2020 with the hope that
staff can then be trained to operate the new vessel and it can be in the water by the summer of 2020. Peter says most people assume that Coastguard receives the bulk of its funding from central government but apart from covering fuel costs for the rescue vessel “that’s just not the case”. The Pub Charity grant comes just a week after a $100,000 grant from the Lion Foundation. Peter says the response from funding organisations is recognition of the importance of having a vessel that is fit for purpose. Nelson Coastguard brought 88 people home safely in the past year, rescued from a wide range of circumstances, most of them getting into trouble while using craft such as inflatable toys, kayaks, and small vessels. Replacement vessels are funded from community grants and fundraising. “We are almost 75 percent there now and there is a huge sense of purpose amongst our team of Coastguard volunteers to have our new boat serving the community next year.”

A local maritime tutor has helped piece together an epic journey of one of Nelson’s early families. Captain Phil Pinniger, a nautical tutor at International Maritime Institute of New Zealand, has managed to plot the exact journey the Buxton family took on their 245-day journey from England to Nelson, using research provided by Broadgreen House. The Buxton family, of Buxton Square fame, arrived in Nelson in 1851 and set up their business where Farmers sits now. That family’s, along with other early Nelsonian immigrants’ experiences, are explored in the new exhibition, “A Passage to Nelson: Unpacking the Past” at Broadgreen Historic House. “The journey was epic,” says Phil. “By digging into the research a little deeper I was able to link up, say a child’s birth, with a position because the entry would say they’re off the Azores or something like that.” Four people died on the journey, another four were born and four couples got married on board the Castle Eden during the voyage. After almost six months, the ship reached New Zealand, but Captain Thornhill could not find a safe passage through the Cook Strait due
to a raging storm. He made the decision to make for Port Jackson in Sydney, causing Edmund Buxton to complain, as Sydney was “no fit place” for his daughter. After arriving in Sydney, the Buxtons chartered the brigantine William Alfred to get to Nelson, finally arriving on May 29, 1851 245 days after leaving London. The new display, delves into what early immigrants brought with them and their arrival in Nelson, with a special focus on the costumes and textiles. Phil says he “loved” the task of plotting the journey. “If the truth be known all seafarers are romantics at heart. We’re all caught up in the passion and the love of the sea otherwise we wouldn’t go there. “I love history and I think I’m just in awe almost, this day in age you can get on a plane and be nearly anywhere in the world within 36 hours. He says the journey was “huge undertaking”. “To leave a country to an unknown place and the conditions and the actual living on board was heinous in some cases.” He says it’s amazing what the Buxtons then had to go through once they arrived in New Zealand and the current display at Broadgreen House is a good look at what early life in Nelson would’ve been like.

Community champions against family violence Bruno Saia Do you know anyone who ever suffered from any family violence? Have you experienced it yourself? Do you know what to do in any situation like that if it comes across you? The first step is to be able to talk about it. And that’s what Nelson’s Community Champions are there for. Working with Safe Families Nelson Richmond, the champions are a group of people in our community trained to have the skills and information to successfully manage conversations around family violence or managing anger.
“We hope that this will contribute to reducing family violence in our community and also promoting ‘it is ok to ask for help’,” says coordinator Haidee Channings. “If someone comes and speaks to you, which is a very brave step to be talking to someone, because a lot of family violence is hidden.” Social worker and a community champion Sarah Lim started with the rest of the group in July and is available to talk to anyone who contacts her. “You have to be nonjudgemental, patient and open,” she says. “Allowing them to tell you their story and what they’ve been through. Listening to what
they have to say and from that gauging from your experience.” Sarah says it’s about opening lines of communication and building up a relationship first. “And if they have any further questions, then opening myself up to be that person that they can trust and talk to if they need to.” Posters showing photos of all community champions will put up in Richmond and Nelson in November so that you the community can identify each of them. You can also get more information from Haidee at Te Korowai Trust, 398 Main Road Stoke or by the phone: The community champion Sarah Lim and Coordinator Haidee Channings. Your Voice Nelson-Blenheim speed limit reduction: This should apply to all of New Zealand as happened in the 1980s. A drop of 100kph to 80kphm for two years in the 1980s in all of New Zealand saw the road deaths halved. The current cost of road carnage is $6 billion a year therefore we would save $3 billion. Fuel usage was also halved. We are in a climate crisis and this is what we can all do to reduce carbon pollution plus it's better on the wallet, it will let you save money for your next electric car! Plus, the difference that 20kph adds terrible impact. Plus, the number of tourists, buses, trucks, cars, campervans on our roads is growing! Slow down and practise gratitude for all the people (ambulance, medics, doctors, police, firemen, helicopter team, later on physiotherapists etc) who have to work on these horrific scenes of carnage, screams, blood, with
endless unforgettable trauma to the people left alive and to the rescue teams. Please inform yourselves and listen to the podcast ‘Written off: The true cost of road deaths’ on RNZ and start enjoying a comfortable relaxed speed which respects all life, people and the planet. William
Housing: Dear Sir, New Zealand is becoming a “housing disaster area”. A tax on disposable assets acquired for that purpose financially – but limited to real estate – needs to be made law. Nelson Matters This Government has just passed its second birthday. It was an unusual birth for a new government in 2017. Jacinda Ardern had been Labour leader for a few weeks. The party with the most votes and the most MPs did not get into Government for the first time in New Zealand history. It is a good time to compare promise with performance, particularly with the PM calling 2019 the year of delivery. Jacinda Ardern’s first big promise announced days after becoming leader was Labour’s plan for light rail in Auckland. The commitment was made with great fanfare alongside Mayor Phil Goff and Transport Spokesper-
son Phil Twyford. They promised that the first section to Mt Roskill would cost $1.4 billion and be completed by 2021. Labour has completely dropped the ball on this flagship infrastructure project. The timeline now has construction not beginning until 2021 with possible completion in 2025. No design has been completed. No route has been determined. No contractor has been selected. Minister Jones says the price tag has blown out four-fold to $6 billion. The business case is not due until next February. NZ First is now questioning whether it will ever proceed. The incompetence is making Jacinda
Ardern’s promise look foolish. Everybody knows New Zealand has to get more infrastructure built. That’s why National put $1 billion into electrifying Auckland trains, $1.6 billion into the Waterview tunnel, $1.2 billion into Transmission Gully in Wellington, $1.3 billion into the rebuild of Kaikoura’s SH1 and locally the $40 million Ruby Bypass. The difference is that National got stuff done. The fiasco over Auckland’s Light Rail is Kiwibuild 2.0. Jacinda Ardern promised 100,000 affordable homes over a decade - a 1,000 in the first year - 5,000 in the second -10,000 in the third year and 12,000 every year thereafter. The

And do you really think that people will obey them? I've never seen such an overkill of lines painted on the roads in all manner of colours that many just ignore. To save money, council, on main roads, paint traffic islands and people just drive over the top of them. Do people actually know what all the different lines are for? They probably don't, so just drive over them until they may get caught and or fined. Clearways are a quick fix at certain times of the day but if your main arteries are busy most of the time during daylight working hours it's a case of lack of forward planning with roads while still trying to agree to a road around Wakatu for heavy vehicles to the port etc! You will probably have a gondola before that happens? How long has it been now? Just get the thing done. Michael Watson

idea that the Government could build homes much faster than building companies and much more cheaply has become a joke. 6,000 Kiwibuild houses should have been completed by now but there are only 217. Most are not new but have been bought off developers. 100 are unsold because they are too expensive, poorly designed or in the wrong place. Labour promised Nelson would get “at least 1,000” Kiwibuild homes. We have got none and none are planned. In contrast hundreds of homes have been built locally in National’s Special Housing Areas. The Homestart grants scheme I launched in April 2015 has since helped 1800

Nelsonians buy their first home. Labour has also broken a long list of other promises like increasing police numbers by 1800, planting a billion trees, converting the Govt car fleet to electric and removing parental donations in all schools. Last week they also dropped their commitment on climate change over agricultural emissions. Helen Clark and John Key went to great lengths to ensure they only promised what could be done. They were both very firm on ensuring Ministers delivered. The Government is terminal if it keeps up this incompetence and failure to deliver on what was promised. Advert.

Event is Nelson’s icing on the cake Locally Owned and Operated
Kate Russell All things cake related will be on show in Nelson this weekend. Hundreds of cake decorators are coming to town for ‘Cake and Sugar’ - the annual New Zealand Cake Decorators Guild conference at Club Waimea. President of the Nelson guild Linda Bunt says it’s a privilege to host the event. There will be overseas demonstrators, an exhibition of competition cakes, sprays of flowers, sugar art and more. There will also be trading stalls where those interested in cake decorating can purchase materials. Linda, who’s been a member of the guild for 20 years, says cake decorating is making a comeback in Nelson and they have doubled their membership in the last two years. “We have 39 members including five 14 and 15-year-olds - and they are incredibly good. It’s an artform that was beginning to die off, so we’d like to get these young ones to carry the craft through.” She attributes the surge of

They had night classes at Waimea College and Nayland College, so I joined one of those. From there I joined the guild and I’ve never looked back.” She does everything from sculpting, to birthdays, to weddings and gets requests for the formal, to the semi-formal to the “very strange”.
“One cake I did for a wedding was a piece of steak. You do get challenged. Last week I had to do a buttocks cake.” Linda says the conference is great way to learn new techniques but it’s something the public will enjoy too. “The conference is a wonderful exhibition for someone who just wants to see a different art form and its varying styles.” ‘Cake and Sugar’ is on this Saturday 2 November from 8am - 5pm, and Sunday 3 November from 8am – 3.30pm at Club Waimea. Entry is $3, or $5 for a family. Children under 12 are free.

Nile Street trees being removed
NMIT was transformed into a Hell’s Kitchen-style competition last week as budding chefs tested their culinary skills against both the clock and their classmates. Students were tasked with preparing a restaurant quality dish from a mystery box of ingredients in just one hour. The judging panel consisted of executive chef at New Zealand Venison Graham Brown, Jeff Scott Foster of the Rutherford Hotel, tutors Steve McIntyre and Quinton Gately and 2018 winner Alicia Sixtus. Steph Taylor was crowned champion for her daring venison dish with a paired with panko crusted broccoli. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Four large cut leaved plane trees on Nile Street East are being removed after being assessed by arborists as a risk to people and property. The assessment looked at all the cut leaved plane trees on Nile Street to identify any tree health, and public health safety issues. The report identified the four trees as having structural defects and they were recommended for removal. Brad Cadwallader, a highly experienced independent tree consultant and board member on the New Zealand Notable Trees Trust, was asked by Nelson City Council to provide a second opinion on the management of the trees and the advice received to remove some of them. “It’s always unfortunate when large trees need to be removed, especially ones that provide as much urban greening as these trees do,” says Brad. “However, with the safety of people living in, and moving through the area being key considerations we must be pragmatic in the way we manage them,” He says due to the poor structural form of the trees, multiple defects present and a history of them failing, there are limited management options to be taken. Council says that while it never

Consultation with residents was undertaken so that any concerns could be addressed in detail and the decision-making process explained. The removal operation began yesterday. Council plans to replant the road berms, where appropriate, with non-fruiting Ginkgo biloba trees, which are a good fit with the other trees in the street. The removal of these trees will involve traffic management on Nile Street, and there will be some disruption to normal traffic movement.

The Tasman Mako celebrate their NPC premiership victory after the final whistle Fetuli Paea slips through a Wellington tackle. Photo: Barry Whitnall/ Shuttersport. blows. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.
Tasman Mako crowned champions Jonty Dine and Peter Jones The Mako held off a ferocious challenge from the Wellington Lions 31-14 to claim its maiden title in an enthralling final in front to a packed house at Trafalgar Park. Tasman’s ascendance to the top rung of the New Zealand provincial ladder should come as no surprise to those who have followed the team’s fortunes in recent years. Their star has been steadily rising, with the prospect of a breakthrough NPC premiership title seemingly only a matter of time. Fifteen years ago, the Tasman Mako were merely an idea, a concept that had merit but posed more questions than answers. Within 14 seasons, during which the nation’s newest union twice teetered on the edge of oblivion, they have established themselves as one of the powerhouses of our national game. And there has been no magic wand, no special stairway to NPC heaven. It has taken determination, resilience and some astute management to get there. Mako co-head coach Andrew
Goodman has been a big part of the union’s success story, both as a player, then assistant coach to Leon MacDonald and co-head coach with Clarke Dermody this season. Goodman said it had taken three or four seasons of hard work to get the team over the line. “I want to say big thank you to all those guys outside the team who have had a big impact … one who comes immediately to mind is Leon for the influence he has had on Shane [Christie] and myself as young coaches.” Tasman’s 12-from-12 charge to the title has been based around a fairly simple blueprint for success, a recipe that was repeated in the final. “Wellington were never out of it, if one of those passes had stuck in the last 15 minutes it would have been a real tight finish,” said Goodman. “But there was some great grit from our boys and the ‘Sparkies’ once again did a really good job. Tuli Paea came on at halftime and changed the game, Jacob Norris played awesome, Hugh Roach again, Uchi [Keisuke Uchida] for the last 15, Wyatt Crockett was

Jordan Taufua and Crockett, may have played their last game in the jersey. Perry described the post-match feeling on Saturday as “unreal”. “This is where it all started … it means a lot to me personally, [the coaches] gave me a crack and we won the second year I was here … we wanted to go to the top and we’ve finally done it, so it’s awesome to be a part of it. “There have been a few ups and downs along the way … it hasn’t really sunk in yet. I couldn’t have done it with better bunch of men.” Squire’s mind went back to another night, the 2014 premiership final loss to Taranaki in New Plymouth. “It’s good to redeem ourselves and get the job done this year, this feels awesome. “The culture here is really something different, it’s a great tight-knit group and I can only see it growing with the talented young guys that are here.” Asked if he will be back for another campaign, Squire was unsure. “The body’s feeling a bit beaten up at the moment … that’s the
dream, to come back, but there is also that feeling that this could have been my last game here in New Zealand. “If that’s the case I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out.” Mako skipper David Havili was still trying to come to grips with his side’s achievements 15 minutes after the final whistle. “I still can’t quite believe it … it’s quite raw at the moment. “We have been building for this moment for a very long time, so to get over the line is just so good man, so good. “There was both relief and excitement at the end, to put this little union on the map is bloody special.” Havili boldly declared his loyalty for the province where he grew up and where he intends to remain. “I’m definitely a Mako for life … I’m from the little town of Motueka and I won’t be leaving … but for now I think I’ll enjoy this for the next few days.” Scorers: Tasman 31 (Jordan 2, Havili tries Hunt 4 pens, 2 cons) Wellington 14 (Fidow tries, Garden-Bachop 3 pens)

Nelson’s wonder woman runs 300km in 48 hours Jonty Dine
Imagine running over 300km in 48 hours. Nelson’s own endurance wonder woman Katie Wright has just done that – testing the limits of her ability. The 32-year-old’s extraordinary effort at the Big’s Backyard Ultra in Tennessee saw her complete fifty laps of the 7km continuous course, sleeping as little as seven minutes between laps. “The body is pretty beaten up now to be honest, everything hurts,” Katie says. However, despite the pain Katie managed to run further than she ever had before. The 32-year-old doctor tapped
out just ten laps shy of the winner as a niggling injury in her hip was causing extreme discomfort. “I couldn’t do much more than hobble at that point.” Even more impressive is the fact Katie only took up the sport two years ago. Katie says it’s as much of a psychological battle as a physical one when taking on these seemingly impossible challenges. “I did a lot of preparation and used some techniques I’d learned; the key is not to compare yourself to others who may be looking stronger.” She says the continuous course wasn’t as monotonous as she expected.
“I always thought it would be horrifically boring, but it was nice to go around and get to know the course better.” A natural competitor, Katie says she was disappointed not to conquer the beast. “There’s always an element of being gutted when thinking winning is a possibility but looking at how far I’ve come is a great feeling.” In the lead up to the race, Katie was covering average about 80km a week. “I eat sleep, work and run. I don’t socialize a lot, and when I do it’s exclusively with runners outside of work.” She says her employer had been very supportive of her racing.

“The hospital has been great, but I’ll be coming back to a lot of night shifts and weekends to make up for it,” she jokes. Following the race, Katie says she completely collapsed on a bed.
