Editing can be intimidating because you are looking at the story that you are telling from a detached perspective. 1) Keep an eye on grammar and spelling errors. 2) Cut all unnecessary words, sentences, and paragraphs. 3) Replace passive language with active language. 4) Check for formatting mistakes such as incorrect line spacing and missing spaces between words, punctuation, and periods at the end of sentences. 5) Read your work out loud to catch any errors that you might not notice by just reading it on the screen or in your head. 6) Make sure your tone is consistent throughout the piece 7) Check for any contradictions or fundamental misunderstandings in the logic of your 8) Be critical with yourself - avoid being defensive or prideful and look at the work objectively.
