Students, Fans, Alumni, On behalf of the Northeast Mississippi Community College Athletics Department, welcome to Northeast and a new phase in your life as you pursue a college education. We are proud you have chosen Northeast to further your education and athletic career. Welcome to our parents, fans, and alumni that have elected to attend this athletic event. We strive to provide opportunities of personal growth through academic work, team experiences, and development of a sense of ethical responsibility. Northeast recognizes that its primary commitment is to the education of our student-athletes. We extend academic support, tutoring, and priority class scheduling as a few of the tools offered as each of our athletes progress toward their degree. In January of 2017, Northeast kicked off the GROW Northeast campaign. The intention of this endeavor was not only to increase student enrollment, but to establish, as is the case with any organization, company, or educational institution, a foundation for excellence. As you will see from the list of “goals to grow shown here, student success is our first priority. We must constantly be searching and exploring new ways and means to embrace learning and classroom instruction. The success of our students is at the forefront of our desire to grow. I hope you will have time prior to or after this athletic event to walk or drive around our campus and experience what we have to offer. We are happy to have you become a part of the Northeast family. Please feel free to contact me should the need ever arise. As you leave campus after this event, we wish you the very best and safe travels!! Sincerely,

Ricky G. Ford PRESIDENT

Tight End High: Hernando Natives Make Up Entire Offensive Position

T

here is no denying where a majority of the talent on the Northeast Mississippi Community College football team originates from. Twelve of the 55 student-athletes on the Tigers’ active roster are from DeSoto County in the northwestern portion of the Magnolia State. That is by and far the most players from any one location for the Tigers. The area with the second highest amount of athletes is Northeast’s traditional five-county district with five total players from schools including Baldwyn, Corinth, Falkner, Kossuth and New Albany. However, if you examine the group of players from DeSoto County a bit closer, you will find an even greater common denominator. Ten of the 12 are graduates of Hernando High School. That represents nearly 20-percent of the entire roster for the Tigers. It also encompasses an entire position on the team with all three tight ends hailing from Hernando. Bo Canton and Ross Painter are both sophomores that starred on Northeast’s 2016 edition that finished ranked inside the top 10 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Caleb Napper joined the squad as a freshman this season. Some of the trio did not actually play the position in high school. In fact, the two eldest of the threesome rarely saw time at tight end at all while at Hernando. Canton was primarily stationed at defensive end while Painter’s 6-4 frame was utilized as a wide receiver at the prep level. Napper was also a defensive end, but on offense was used as a tight end. Northeast head coach Greg Davis and offensive coordinator Doug Saylor have successfully found ways to utilize each of the three through the first one-third of the campaign. Each of the three have caught at least one pass so far. Canton has also lined up at fullback and Painter goes out as a wide receiver several times per game. Davis recognizes the positive attitudes that the Canton, Napper and Painter all have on a daily basis whether it’s in the film room, on the practice field or on game day. “Our three tight ends are unique kids,” said Davis. “They’re great kids to be around and it’s a pleasure to coach all three of them because they make days really, really fun.” The three are around each other constantly. Canton and Napper are roommates while Painter lives just across the hallway on the first floor in the White Hall dormitory on the Booneville campus.

SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE 6

Thursday, September 21 6:30 p.m Tiger Stadium

(From Left) Caleb Napper, Ross Painter, Bo Canton The tandem echo each other when talking about their relationship and how their friendship has grown even more since arriving in the City of Hospitality. “I would describe it as brotherhood,” Canton said. “We see each other all the time. We’re always in the same drills with the same position coach. We’re always together. It’s brought us a lot closer than we were in high school.” “We all help each other out with the plays,” said Napper. “We’re always hanging out and going to do stuff and when we go back to Hernando we’re always together. All around it’s just a brotherhood.” “We were pretty close (at Hernando) and just being here, living around each other and hanging around all the time has brought us closer,” Painter said. Canton and Painter both saw plenty of action as freshmen one year ago when the Tigers went 6-3 overall and rose to as high as No. 7 in the NJCAA rankings. They combined to catch 11 passes, but perhaps more importantly provided an extra blocker on an offense that averaged 366.1 yards per game. Canton’s touchdown was a six-yard reception during a 34-10 victory at Mississippi Delta Community College. Painter’s was a 13-yard snag to help the Tigers defeat East Central Community College by a score of 24-21 on the road during week two of the 2016 campaign.

Painter is known for his ability to stretch the field and become another option for Northeast quarterbacks Caleb Kitchens and Desmond Hunter to throw to. He currently has the third most catches for the Tigers this year with five behind only wideouts O.D. Wooten, who also happens to be a Hernando product, and Toreano Miner. Canton is an outstanding bruising blocker and Napper is described as the best of both worlds with a mixture of stellar blocking and catching ability. Both these young men have one catch apiece as well for Northeast through three contests. Painter will certainly continue his gridiron career at the next level and is already garnering interest from NCAA Division I institutions such as Southeast Missouri State University. Canton’s future might not be on the football field, but that’s fine by him. He hopes to enroll in nursing school after completing his Associate’s degree this academic year. He should have no problem with that after earning multiple scholastic awards last season. Canton was a NJCAA All-Academic Third Team selection and was one of a school-record 40 student-athletes to secure Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Academic All-State recognition. “I keep good grades because that is what I was always raised to do,” Canton said. “You’ve got to keep a good GPA to get in (to nursing school) so I have goals set that I want to eventually reach.” Napper has one more year of eligibility remaining at Northeast that he can use during the 2018 campaign. Even though the Tigers have not had the start to this year that they hoped for after gaining a No. 9 preseason national ranking, the group of tight ends firmly believe that brighter days are quickly on the horizon. “We can turn this season around,” said Canton. “As a unit, I like how we’re family orientated. We all love each other and would do anything for each other. Our offense is very physical and I feel like we can win a lot of our one-on-one battles and come out with some wins.” “We’re as good as we can let ourselves be and I think if we all do what we need to do and come together as a team then we can make it a long way,” Napper said. “I think we’ve got a lot ahead of us,” said Painter. “We can turn this season around and make good of it.”
