Hebburn Town FC 1912-2012 100 YEARS IN BRIEF
H
ebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide. The company also started a football team, and, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League. There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North
Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

The Platinum Lounge T oday we extend a warm welcome to the chairman, officials, players and the spectators from Darlington and sincerely hope that they have an enjoyable afternoon on Tyneside. Darlington has a long and varied history and are enjoying their first season back in the Northern League after administration and financial problems resulted in them being relegated from the Conference. The club, currently top of the league and with eyes on promotion, has had a significant impact on the Northern League - primarily because of the large crowds that it has attracted both home and away. We are anticipating a big attendance at today’s game and certainly expect our official record of 515 against Darwin, set in 1991, to be broken. Because of previous fixture postponements we unusually face Darlington immediately after playing them at Heritage Park,
which they ground share with Bishop Auckland, on Wednesday night.
Darlington were 1-0 victors in that game; after being under great pressure in the first half the Hebburn lads showed great tenacity and defended extremely well.
Although we were down to ten men after Dan Kirkup’s sending off, we were unlucky not to secure a point in the final ten minutes when we put the home team under pressure. If we continue at that level in today’s game it should be an exciting spectacle. We also welcome our three match officials and hope that they have an incident free afternoon. More and more the decisions made by the officials are having a significant impact on results. We would also like to welcome Wayne Gredziak who joined the club from Northallerton Town earlier this week and made an impressive debut against Darlington. Wayne, a striker, has extensive experience in the top division of the Northern League.

The Dugout A s I write this I am sitting in an office in Bristol and reports back home say it’s lashing down with snow. My first concern isn’t “will I get home,” it is...”will the game against Darlington be on tomorrow?” Any player or manager or coach wants to pit their wits against the best in their league and this season Darlington are proving to be just that. It is hard to normally live up to hype and expectation but Darlington are delivering both on and on the pitch. Their team is flying at the top of the league; their manager has been professional and a pleasure to deal with in my transfer dealings with him; and then there are the fans - every player and manager would give their right arm to have a fan base of such magnitude and loyalty to roar them on every week. Now we have to confront that roar and loyalty twice within three days. Are my players up for it? Well, if they aren’t then they shouldn’t be playing football, never mind pulling on a Hebburn shirt. We have stuttered over the last few games but to be honest, we are way ahead of schedule in our first season in this division and we wouldn’t change any-
thing that we have done. We are a bit like Darlington, learning about this division as we go, players learning and giving their all, the manager learning and giving their all, and the committees are learning and giving their all - I just wish we could swap budgets with Martin and I’d be a happier man. My players have been brilliant for me this season and the next two games aren’t going to define their season but it’ll help them prepare for the rest of the campaign by the way they will have to raise their game and set their standards. And of course I would expect nothing else from such a hard working, honest, bunch of lads. So between now and Saturday I will fly home for the game at Darlington, then fly to Belfast for work and then return for the re-match on Saturday afternoon when I hope it is Darlington that are feeling like a wounded animal and not Hebburn Town. Either way…win, lose or draw.....enjoy the game and buy me a pint afterwards!

Darlington Players CRAIG TURNS Position: Goalkeeper DOB: 04/11/1982 Former Sunderland goalkeeper who has turned out for Durham City and Blyth Spartans. Turns arrived at Darlington from Spennymoor where he had spent four seasons and won three Northern League titles. Unfortuantly Craig found himself frozen out at Spennymoor at the start of the 2012/13 season and moved to Quakers.
MARK BELL Position: Goalkeeper DOB: 09/10/1982 Highly experienced shot stopper Mark Bell signed for Darlington in December 2012 from West Auckland. Prior to his arrival at Darlington he made 128 starts for West Auckland who he was with since the 2006/07 season. Bell however had two seasons with Blyth Spartans between 2008 and 2010 where he played in the Conference North. He was also part of the Blyth’s side that enjoyed a great FA Cup run during the 2008/09 season which saw them reach the 4th round. After his release from Blyth in June 2010 he returned to West Auckland.
SEAN GREGAN Position: Defender/Coach DOB: 29/03/1974 A player that needs little introduction to the Darlington faithful having risen through the
youth ranks to become arguably the clubs finest export. After 134 appearances for the Quakers, Gregan made a £350K move to Preston North End where he became a fans favourite earning the nickname “God” appearing in over 200 games, primarily as a midfielder. A £2m switch to Premiership West Brom followed before spells at Leeds and Oldham where in the twilight of his career he was switched back to the defensive position at which he started his career. Brief stints at Fleetwood and Kendal preceded his return to Darlington where he will act as coach and provide cover in the centre of defence.
STEPHEN HARRISON Position: Defender DOB: 03/02/1982 Right-sided defender Harrison joins the Quakers from Northern League rivals Bedlington Terriers where he spent one season joining from Blue Square North Blyth Spartans. A well travelled non-league schemer “Harra” counts Gateshead, Durham City and Spennymoor amongst his former clubs after his release from Sunderland.
TERRY GALBRAITH Position: Defender DOB: 03/02/1990 Terry joined Darlington in late November 2012 from Dunston UTS where he part of their 2012 FA Vase winning side. Capable
of playing left-back, left wing and central midfielder the former Blyth Spartans player brings options to the Darlington team team. Quick and with good technique he is capable of chipping in with a goal or two as well.
GARY BROWN Position: Defender DOB: 19/07/1987 Gary Brown is another summer 2012 recruit. The no-nonsense defender can also play at fullback and in midfield if needed. He joined Darlington after playing for Durham City who he joined towards the end of the 2010/11 season from Shildon. Before that he had a spell at Jarrow Roofing and Blyth Spartans where he was involved in their memorable FA Cup run during the 2008/09 season which saw them reach the third round.
JOE TAIT Position: Defender DOB: 04/02/1990 Darlington signed defender Joe Tait in September 2012. Joe started his career with Hartlepool United and made numerous appearances in their youth an reserve team setups. In 2009 he moved to the United States after accepting a scholarship. He went on to play for Baton Rouge Capitals, Dayton Dutch Lions and Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

CHRIS EMMS Position: Midfielder DOB: 22/07/1984 Former Middlesbrough academy player Chris joined Darlington during the summer of 2012. The right winger, who has also played for Billingham Town and Spennymoor Town, joined Quakers after turning out for Blyth Spartans the previous season. Chris made 22 appearances scoring 3 goals before moving in January to Billingham Synthonia before becoming one of Martin Gray’s early signings for Darlington.
ADAM NICHOLLS Position: Midfielder DOB: 11/11/1988 Adam, a quick winger who loves to run at the defence and cause problems and can chip in with plenty of goals, signed for Darlington ahead of the 2012/13 season having previously spent three seasons with West Auckland Town scoring a total 19 goals. He was also part of the West Auckland team who made it to the 2012 FA Vase final at Wembley.
LEON SCOTT Position: Midfielder DOB: 05/06/1986 Leon is a product of the Middlesbrough Academy. He has
played for Peterlee, Dunston Federation, Newcastle Blue Star, Whitby Town, Harrogate Town, Whitby Town (again), Norton & Stockton Ancients. He is a strong powerful player who plays in central midfield. He can also play at full-back.
CRAIG GOTT Position: Midfielder DOB: 15/12/1989 Craig Gott arrived from Billingham Synthonia in late September 2012. Having previously had spells with Spennymoor Town, Tow Law and Norton & Stockton Ancients he moved to Billingham Synthonia in the summer of 2012 but has quickly caught the eye of the Darlington management team. A good passer of the ball Gott can create goals as well as chipping in with them and has plenty of Northern League experience despite his young age.
AMAR PUREWAL Position: Striker DOB: 28/10/1989 Amar, like his brother, joined Darlington during the summer of 2012 from Durham City. Amar has good pace and enjoys taking on defenders. Equally at home down the left flank or through the middle. Started his career in Newcastle United’s youth team and joined Durham City from Northern League side Bishop Auckland in 2010 and finished his first season as leading scorer for the Citizens.
DAVID DOWSON Position: Striker DOB: 12/09/1988 David Dowson’s move to Dar-
lington in the summer of 2012 represents his second spell at the club having first joined Quakers on loan in 2009 from Sunderland. David was released by the Black Cats in 210 and after short spells with spells with Gateshead and York City joined Durham City in October 2010. David made only a handful of appearances for York before moving to Durham City where he became a regular goalscorer.
STEVE JOHNSON Position: Striker DOB: 03/06/1981 Darlington born Steve Johnson signed for Darlington in August 2012 after impressing during a spell on trial at the club which included a hat-trick in a pre-season game game at Glasshoughton Welfare. Johnson, who is a Darlington supporter, played for Shildon before switching to West Auckland briefly in March 2012. There he scored twice in four games before moving to Quakers during the summer.
STEPHEN THOMPSON Position: Striker DOB: 15/04/1989 Thompson signed for Darlington in September 2012. Quakers had been chasing the Durham City forward for some weeks. Thompson arrived at Durham in the summer of 2010 from AFC Telford after previously having been with Middlesbrough and Port Vale. A quick thinking classic playmaker who has pace, good feet and excellent passing ability. He is equally at home both scoring and making goals for others.

y favourite memory from my time at Hebburn has to be the pre-season trip to Stranraer. I didn’t know many of the lads when I first arrived at the club but after that trip I really had the feeling that I was welcome at Hebburn. You could write a book with some of the things that happened that weekend. I’ve been back to the Hebburn Sports Ground since I left the club and the reception I received when I came back was great. All the committee men and the lads wished me all the best and I try and get there and watch when I can as I made some good friends at the club. I’m hoping the reception I get on Saturday isn’t too bad as my mam will be there! But to be honest I don’t know what to expect - i hope the fans all understand the decision I made. The decision was very tough to leave Hebburn as I have some great friends at the club. However, I want to play at the highest level I can and once I spoke to Darlington and had seen that they wanted to go the same way as I did then my mind was made up. Hebburn were, and still are, exceeding expectations from what everyone thought they could do before the season started. It is a great club and I always said the

only other club that would turn my head was one with a history and a pedigree that Darlington has. I can’t wait for the games. I’ve already had a few phone calls from Callum Charlton and Lee Harrison, both telling me what they are going to do to me! But I’m not too worried as I’m still praying for Harra after the training sessions at the JJB! I love it at Darlington. I’ve settled in quite well, and I knew a few of the lads from last season when I was at Durham. We have only played a few games due to the weather, but so far so good. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season. I’d like to thank everyone associated with Hebburn Town Football Club. It is a great club with great people and is heading in the right direction. I wish them all the best for the future.

ebburn Town gifted Newton Aycliffe a two goal half-time lead before seeing a second half fightback halted by the a poor refereeing decision and superb goalkeeping as Northern League football returned to South Tyneside for the first time in four weeks.
Aycliffe’s first attack on goal started with a long ball forward from Tom Hinchley and finished with a lobbed finish from Danny Earl after three minutes. Hebburn captain Jeff Forsyth played for offside and halted, yet the alert Earl, from an onside position, ran through and finished over the head of Dan Regan from the edge of the box. The visitors scored again after 37 minutes when Paul Broom swept home from inside the box after a Kris Hughes shot had initially been well saved by Regan. Though again it was Aycliffe who were the more alert with the Hebburn defence initially stopping after Earl had went down in the box. After an end-to-end first half, Hebburn had greater attacking impetus after the break, led by Stuart Nicholson who was a constant danger to the away defence. Az Croft’s floated free-kick after 65 minutes was headed in by Stephenson as Hebburn’s pressure eventually bore fruit and manager Paul Bennett made an immediate change to try and force a point

The Hornets almost made a perfect start when Tony Stephenson’s left wing cross in the first minute was first nudged towards goal by Stephen Forster with Aycliffe ‘keeper Scott Pocklington pulling off a great reaction save and then blocking subsequent followup efforts from first Paul Gardiner and Forster again before the ball was cleared.
with Alex Benjamin and Dean Nicholson both appearing from the bench. Benjamin and Stuart Nicholson continued to test Pocklington, yet the ‘keeper remained on top of each exchange. With eight minutes remaining, Gardiner ran through centrally on goal only to find Pocklington in his way just outside of the box. As he glanced the ball around the ‘keeper, he was hauled down with the open goal at his mercy. Remarkably, the referee thought the Hebburn midfielder had played the ball too much towards the corner flag, despite the ball remaining central and within Gardiner’s reach, and issued a yellow card and a free-kick to the Hornets. The inspired Pocklington and his full complement of outfield players then held firm to win all of the points and move ten points away from the relegation zone.

ne year ago Inside Out aired on BBC One featuring Darlington FC and the battle to save the club. There were interviews with some who wanted to save the club, though supporter reaction was lukewarm at best, with fans having watched in horror at the repeated shambles inflicted upon them by the likes of George Reynolds and Raj Singh. Fast forward one year and the Darlo fans now have control of their club. The fans own the club. And with that comes the springboard to truly represent the town, the community, even football, more than any businessman, with designs of lining their own pocket, ever could do. Like the fans of Austria Salzburg, who had their club ripped away from them (albeit under different circumstances) and had to start at the bottom of the pyramid, Darlo are meeting adversity in a winning manner and will surely advance back through the leagues. But regardless of what happens, the fans now have the ability to shape their own future. And that future will be bright.

eferees have a thankless task at times and there’s certainly a case to feel sorry for those with the full exposure of the media upon them in the Premier League….until you remember they take home £85,000 a year.
Decisions are inconsistent and rules aren’t adhered to, especially in games without an assessor present. This past week I have watched a professional foul by a goalkeeper who was the last man and then violent conduct being punished by yellow cards.
That’s not the case in the Northern League, however, where officials split around £150 between them per game. With the amount of money in non-league football, paying that amount is quite an expense. But without the officials there is no game.
For fans, this has an impact and I have more fans are telling me that they are being pushed away from the game by poor refereeing, by a feeling that they have spent cash on a game determined by someone who, at times, couldn’t correctly decide whether to put their sock or their shoe on first.
Yet this is taken to the extreme by many. As in the Premier League, there are some officials who believe they are the game; that they are the stars, some even brag about going to Doncaster Rovers on a Saturday while asking players who have once played at some of the top stadiums in the country where they have ever been, such is their ignorance.
To me, there are more fans becoming disenfranchised by this than are turning their backs due to swearing (and correct refereeing should reduce swearing). Yet despite this, it is easy to forget that there are good officials out there. It’s just a shame that those good ones are let down by some of their colleagues.

he Hornets defeated Darlington in a onesided Durham Challenge Cup Preliminary Round match at the Hebburn Sports & Social Ground to return to their winning habit and secure their first home win of the season. Both teams made a host of changes, with Darlington selecting a small number of youth team players to add to their squad of fringe players and established players from their early league games that have propelled them to the top of the Ebac Northern League Division 1. With a much smaller squad in comparison, and a number of injuries further depleting those available, Hebburn manager Paul Bennett made a number of changes of his own with an eye on Saturday’s South Tyneside league derby against South Shields. Hebburn started the brightest and, following some committed challenges in midfield to show that every game is taken serious on South Tyneside, the home side were soon in their stride and attacking down both flanks using the pace of Stephen Forster and James Luccock. Paul Gardiner almost opened the scoring for the Hornets following good work down the left from Carl Paterson. A low cross was fired over and Tony Stephenson just missed out on a goalbound connection, yet when the ball fell into the path of Gardiner, the midfielder thumped the ball off the crossball before Forster’s follow-up volley was well closed down by the Darlington defence.
Gardiner was to be involved in the turning point of the game when he easily manoeuvred between the Darlo centre-backs to collect a through-ball and round Chris Porter in the Darlo goal, who brought saved the goalscoring opportunity by bringing the Hebburn man down. The referee had no hesitation in sending the goalkeeper off and Jonny Davis scored his first goal for the club when he fired in the penalty high past substitute ‘keeper Dale Connor. Hebburn extended their lead after 42 minutes when Paterson was again involved down the left. Getting forward from his full-back position, Paterson drilled in a low cross that Scott Robson stroked in at the back post. The second-half started and the tenmen of Darlington started to come back into the game with substitute Dave Mitchell going close with his first touch. Yet just when the visitors looked to be enjoying most of the possession, Davis found his superb form of the first-half to collect the ball from his defence and control the game from the centre of midfield. A series of ball to the left and the right flanks characterised the classy midfielder’s game throughout the evening. The South Tynesiders made all three of their allowed substitutions during the second-half and Mark Rasmussen was immediately involved playing a one-two pass with Brad Brooking on the edge of the Darlo box. From a tight angle closing to the goal-line, Brooking collected the return ball and superbly fired past Connor to seal the win and send the Hornets into the next round. Attendance – 209.
