SITE ANALYSIS

Land Use Communities without Channel

Separated by Qianshan River, Wan Zai (Zhuhai) and Inner Harbor (Macau) have many similar characteristics in land use: they are both mainly residential land with a large population concen tration . There are also some significant differences: the Inner Harbor is 60 times denser than Wan Zai. Since the closure of Wan Zai Port in 2016, there has been not a single channel between the two communities. The previous 10-minute cross-border time was extended to 6090 minutes, passing through the much further Gongbei Port. Communications between residents of two places have dropped significantly.

Weather

● Wind is one of the most important factors;

● Humidity, the amount of water vapor in the air, affects the moisture level of a fuel;

● Temperature of fuels is determined by the ambient temperature

Fuels

Fuels are all living and dead plant material that can be ignited by a fire. Fuel characteristics strongly influence fire behavior and the resulting fire effects on ecosystems.

Topography

● Elevation with the height above sea level;

● Slope, the steepness of the land;

● Aspect, the direction a slope faces;

● Features, such as canyons, valleys, rivers

Topography: Elevation

Errors & Limitations

● Lack of collection time of Fuel datas: We don’t know if the data was collected before or after some big wildfires. (After fire, vegetations were burned, the site will have lower fire risk.)

● Lack of weather information: wind, humidity datas, etc.

● Single-source demography datas: The census tract is relatively larger more detailed data to build community vulnerability model

waitability

Questions & hypotheses

1. What determines the design of different bus stops?

Bus stop with more riders may get more amenities. (Ex: Commercial areas often have better facilities)

Preliminary interview &Observation Manager interview

The

Different rider groups may have different preferences on the factors that affect waitability; their preferences can be revealed through survey and interview.

2. How do the condition of bus stops affect the user waiting experience? 3. Will people value different factors contributing to an ideal bus stop? 4. How can we measure the waitability of each bus stop?

By giving weighting coefficients to each factor, we can create a rating system to measure the waitability of each bus stop and picture the portrait of ideal bus stop for different groups.

The booming taobao industry in this urban village has led villagers to convert self-built dwellings into warehouses, factories and offices with bedrooms. By 2018, the percentage of pure residential houses in the village was less than 10%.

The design concentrates all the industrial functions of a unit into 20 buildings in four areas, taking away the living space and wrapping it around the factory, while inserting public and transportation spaces.

The word 'SYMBIOSIS' has two meanings: First, it refers to the naturally symbiosis adapted between urban villages and Taobao industry. Second, it refers to the symbiosis between the industrial space and the living and public space, improving the living environment of Taobao village.

CLIMATE CHALLENGES

There are four mainclimate problems that the Hague is facing: extreme precipitation, sea level rise, storm surge, and the most common, global warming. These climate problems pose serious challenges for the Hague in terms of water storage and drainage, dike system construction, planning for harbors and so on.

I proposed four different-scale strategies for dealing with the challenges. The green & blue system, which contains two scales of street and canal, is designed to alleviate urban drainage problems. The harbor elevation system deals with sea level rise, and the beach resistance strategy is for storm surge and beach conservation.

Located in the Hague, Scheveningen is a living and industrial harbor, with residential, industrial and tourist activities of equal importance. Scientific studies suggest that sea level in Scheveningen could rise by 3 metres by 2100 and 8 metres by 2200. Left it alone, in the not-too-distant future scheveningen will be forced to abandon its port functions because of rising water levels, and industrial, tourist, and residential demand will have to retreat inland, fenced in by high dikes.

Harbor-elevation plan is to build two dikes in the harbor area, one to create base conditions for the elevated ground and the other to protect inland urban area. In this way, the function of the harbor is maintained and people do not have to give up the opportunity for hydrophilic activities.

SITE ANALYSIS

Da'Ao village is an ancient village with a history of more than 800 years. The villagers here have been fishing for generations. However, with the development of the society, young people leave the old village to work in the city one by one, and fewer and fewer people stay in the fishing villages would take fishing as a career.Even so, today's Da'Ao village can also be seen everywhere the traditional fishing culture left a deep imprint.

Topographically, Da'Ao village is long and narrow, against the mountain and facing the sea.There is only one main road and three public open space in the village, one of which is our range of design.

SHIP WOOD RECYCLING

Ship wood, a kind of wood from old fishing boats abandoned after decades at sea. Wooden fishing boats in South China are usually made of hard wood such as sandalwood, teak and Qiou wood. The service at sea made them waterproof, fireproof and non-perishable.

Ship wood is a good material for furniture, but no one has tried to use it as a building material before. After careful research, I found it not only to be an excellent building material, but also to be extremely resistant to typhoons, which can be very violent in the south Pacific.

In this design, I chose four kinds of ship wood in different parts of the fishing boat. Combined with glass, steel, concrete and other materials, I built some small wooden cabins for villagers' activities.
