HIDDEN ROOTS Type of project: Final Project, Community Architecture Year: 2 Semester: 1 This is a project which involve designing a school with cheap, local materials for Roots Cambodia Organization. The concept was to create a place that students can fully immerse in nature at the same time inspiring them to be more productive. The idea of using nature to improve students productivity comes from research showing that studying in nature helps to improve memory functions and memory span. My design focus not only on providing greeneries but to also allow students to study and interact, with influence of the natural environment.

Users

The students genereally wants to have a new canteen and kitchen as they usually cook their own food and eat together. They also enjoy gardening and reading. The teachers prefers to have better quality classroom and wishes to have a community hall.

Design process

The site is situated in the middle of acres of empty land, close to the river with frequent flash floods during heavy rain. Using an elevated platform prevents formal activities like classroom and staffroom activities from being affected by the water. To provide a conducive natural environment for the users, Japanese inspired central garden and walkways around site is used to further optimise the interaction with nature.

Classroom configuration

The louvre panels allow flexible adjustment to the classroom if nessesary. The louvres can be shut off against the direction of strong winds, half open to provide natural light and ventilation, or fully open to expand the classroom for different classroom setting. With the wide pathway, it is possible for the classroom to expand to outside the class nearer to the garden. The classroom arrangement can be adjusted to a normal class setting or after class setting. Normal class settings include the typical row arrangement or group work arrangement. Easy arrangement for tests and other settings can also be achieved. After class settings can be funitures to be adjusted to even outside of class to engage in after school activities like consultations, self study or even leisure activities like board games and discussions

Passive and active strategies

Cross-ventilation is obtained by rotating wall panels which allows air of certain directions to pass through the class rooms. Natural lighting can be achieved as the wall panels can open and adjust to the path of the sun. Passive cooling can be achieved due to the presence of eaves and trees. Solar panels are installed on the roof to power the school. The school is orientated in a way where the roof is exposed to maximum sunlight. Solar water heating panels are installed on the roof to provide hot water in the shower.

Material used

Timber and wood can be attained locally. Khmer traditional houses in the village consist mainly of wood. Therefore, the school’s majority structure material are made up of wood. The floors consist of wooden planks and tiles. The rafts and trussses are made of timber from local trees. The roof can be made of wooden planks Bamboo is also a common local materials, mainly used in forms of walls, doors and windows. Each wall panels in the rooms are mainly thin bamboo sticks supported by timber. This way slight ventilation is allowed while strong winds from the north and south are blocked off. Concrete material is mainly used to support the building. It is used to form load bearing columns, walls and foundation. The structure is supported by load-bearing concrete columns. The steps and ramps are made of smooth concrete. The elevated floor slab is also supported by concrete raft foundation.

Interior deisgn intent

It is two minimalist aesthetics, infusing the Japanese principle of wabi sabi with Scandinavian décor’s penchant for sleek-yet-comfy furnishings. From Scandi interiors, the style adopted the desire for orderliness and convenience of life, a craving for natural materials, and from Japanese – simplicity, restraint, functionalism. This creates a bright tranquil and earthy environment which is a peaceful and calm space that the elderly definitely need

Landscape intent

The landscape design focus mainly on providing a tranquil and suitable environment for the elderly instead of functionality. With the Japanese Zen Gardens aesthetic beauty to gaze upon it promotes relaxation and stress relieve for the elderly to enjoy a stress-free environment for the elderly to live their post retirement life. It also provide therapeutic environment for seniors to maintain their emotional stability through illnesses.

Deisgn intent

The buildings are wrapped up by layers of walls depicting elements of polaroid film tapes Polaroids are taken to depict a scene in a split second which holds unforgettable memories even over a long time. This emphasises that the limited bird viewing time that only happens during moments every year should be cherished. For some it can be a once in a lifetime experience that will be treasured even across a very long time and with climate change and human’s damage to the environment, some species of bird might also be one of the last time people stand a chance to marvel at.

Intent of the screen layers

Different layers of screens are used to achieve different effect in perspective of the wildlife and the observers. The inner most layer made up of thick 3D printed walls that are of great sound insulation. It is used to wrap the inner most room for for families with children as they might make loud noises that will scare the wildlife away. The outer layer walls consist of louvres and one-way glass walls that focus on concealing the observers. It is used to provide cross ventilation and natural lighting, while the one way glass walls provide a clear view of the birds without them noticing. The layering of walls also ensures that photographers can get clear recordings of the birds without being affected by the glaring of the glass.

Users

Families, couples, nature lovers and photographers are potential users

Building Material

3D print material,Timber and Glass

Passive sustainable feature

Modern sustainable construction and manufacturing technology like 3D printing is used to construct all the buildings. 3D printing facilitates more efficient designs and creates less waste. The parts are also lightweight which can be used as floating platforms. Most importantly, these walls are thick for sound proofing and support purposes. Cross ventilation and natural sunlight are introduced in the building for less energy consumption

Design style and inspiration

The design style is the fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian or also known as “Japandi” a relatively new trend during 2020. Japandi design is the combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese rustic minimalism to create a feeling of art, nature, and simplicity. Both style is common in the use of simple furniture and focus on the comfort of the users. This fusion creates the perfect blend of function and form, focusing on clean and crisp lines, brightly-lit spaces, and light colors. Some elements of design that were used were the use of earthy colour and natural material. Calming, tranquil, and peaceful palettes are usually chosen, and when brighter colors are incorporated, they are done so meaningfully and subtly. Japanese style evoke a feeling of Zen and tranquility in a space which works hand in hand with Scandinavian’s “Hygge” which is to create cozy and comfortable living spaces. These two style work together rooted in minimalism and comfort. Lastly, with the Japanese concept of “wabi-sabi” to embrace the beauty in imperfection, the aesthetics of the two will be easygoing yet sophisticated with the quality handmade furniture. Japanese style emphasizes on sustainability of material and minimalism, therefore natural material and usually used like wood, rattan, concrete and linen a re used. Following Danshari as well, items that weighs the user down with no meaning will be gotten rid off.

Reason for choosing japandi

As COVID-19 become a part of our lives, it is important to have a functional yet comfortable home that is conducive for the users. The aesthetics and functionality are fundamentally relied on the elements of Japandi, while simple technology are incorporated to further enhance the functionality of the space. Most the doors are replaced with sliding doors together with technology like motion sensor. Electrical appliances can be remotely controlled from even phone in addition to automation. This creates an easygoing and comfortable feeling for the users the moment they enter the residence. As for a wheelchair bound person like the grandmother, it is very easy to move around with the space provided together with the automatic sliding doors. Family members can also tend to them easier if they face difficulty. The house uses large open windows and glass sliding doors to allow daylight penetration and good natural ventilation. Bay windows provided with the original unit is improved with addition of elevated platforms functioning as a well-lit area that can hold activities and a storage solution to hide certain items keeping the minimalist look. The natural daylighting penetrate further into the house through the use of louvres, high ceiling spaces and reflection of light colours in the house. The openable windows also encourage natural ventilation, reducing humidity in the house. This is essential for the son as dust mite usually thrives in humid conditions aiding the requirement of his dust mite allergy. The balcony is joined together with the living and dining room with the addition of sliding doors. The wooden deck area at the balcony is multifunctional as family bonding activities can easily move to the balcony with a great view. Grass patch with a mini golf course can be laid down for the husband to practice some swings. Some aesthetic feature of the house is that most the elements with muted tones in the house is either low profile or flushed to the ceiling. This creates a balance in the muted tones in the house with focalization on items with pop colours like plants, wall decoration and wabi-sabi elements like cracked pots and bowls and cups. This showcases the exquisite pieces of handcrafted works creating a tranquil environment for the users to enjoy.

Colour palette and execution

I was inspired by the Japanese style of earthy, warm, and uncluttered. The elegant simplicity and warmth form this style makes everything look natural yet exquisite. Scandinavian features clean lines and minimalism. The informal and inviting setting of this style is perfect for family bonding in a three-generation household. Fusing two together forms an interior design style that celebrates the harmony between minimalism and organic modernism, with a good dose of comfort mixed in. With the use of muted tones and simple elements, it create a focus on the “wabi-sabi” elements, which is all about embracing transience and imperfection. The material palatte consists of muted tones and neutral colours. Pop colours are limited to the wabi-sabi furniture and items. The material used are mostly natural like timber, rattan, natural fabric like cotton. Greens are limited to potted plants. Timber is also limited to 3 types across the house.

Co-design jounney Stage 1: Idea Board An idea board is hand made and brought around the neighborhood in Jurong East to know more about the elderly likes and dislikes. This will give us insights on the general elderly for interim Stage 2: Kopi Talk Part of stage 1 where we sit down and talk with the elderly in Jurong East about their feelings towards young adults. This will help us deeper understand the situation between the younger and the older generation. Stage 3: Untie the gap and fill with love A board with notes to gather precious stories and some words that the elderly would want to say. This activity is extremely insightful as we targetted elderly that are specifically around the site and gathered gallery content. Stage 4: Mural pen-down Live session workshop launched on Mural to gather stories from young adults, meanwhile inviting them to share their feelings towards elderly via Zoom Stage 5: Crit feedbacks Present our initial design proposal and gather feedback/inputs from community partner and young adults via online interview.

Flow of the gallery

The start of the gallery is more towards understanding the elderly. In the middle it starts to tell more about what we should be doing and not do. Finally it ends with heart warming story to end the gallery on a good notes

Accompany

Ageism

This exhibitions shows the importance of accompanying the elderly

This corner has sheets of calander dangling on the wall, showing that the elderly is getting older as the days pass by, and they are having lesser time to spend with their friends and families.

The empty chair shows that the teddy bear is sown by the elderly. The teddy bear can also be the only memory left from their grandparents etc. This also attracts young adults to visit the gallery due to its Instagram worthy photobooth

Hope to trigger young adults’ emotion so that they can show more appreciation towards the eldery and spend more time to accompany them.

Loneliness The phone booth is small and has nothing on the outside. In the inside however shows the gloominess and loneliness of the area This represents the feelings of the elderly as they do not show it on the outside but internally they crave attention and accompany

Feelings This section is the interactive section with hands-on activity to physically understand the elderly situation. 1st activity is charades with headphones on so the person will have a hard time understanding what the other person is saying, allowing the young adults to know how it feels to have hearing problems due to old age 2nd activity is using utensils while wearing thick gloves. This allow young adults to know how it feels like to have a hard time holding utensil and things due to illnesses like Parkinsons or slow reaction.

Word Wall This wall shows all the “overlapping sounds” (O.S.) in the elderly which they will never dare to speak in front of the young adults. These untold words can be their hopes, concerns or their hidden thoughts and feelings. By walking pass this corridor, young adults are given the chance to know the real thoughts of the elderly and to understand their situation better so that they will be more considerate to the elderly.

Criticism Wall The wall shows the common words young adults used to criticise the elderly about. By looking back at this wall, the young adults will think back about the words they used By walking through this curtain they will think twice before using them next time

Heartwarming Stories The heart-warming story is a conclusive ending to the content of the gallery as they read up more about the items that reminds them of their childhood with their beloved grandparents using the QR code The heart warming story comes right after the criticism wall to give a sense of guilt in the young adults for treating the elderly that way

Reflection section The reflection comes right after the heart-warming story to let them think back about their stand towards their grandparents and reflect on it.

Site context

The site is located on a huge empty hardcourt with many potential. It is situated infront of a 24 hour coffeeshop, and close proximity with the market and wet market. Most importantly, it is in the heart of prosporous neighbourhood with many bustops and pedastrian walking across every minute. Coffeeshop is busy during peak hours and many elderly are seen drinking alcohol. The neighbourhood area also lack exercising facilities as the community centre nearby is still under construction. The elderly finds it hard to stay healthy as some of them do not watch what they consume and do not exercise frequently

Project description

Community activities are often held on the court but is empty during normal days. Since the users that spent the most amount of time hanging around that area are the elderly, I proposed a simple garden with enriching activities for them. There will be plant boxes of scattered across the site while maintaining the efficient circulation of the site. Its acts as a viewing and community garden for the community which is maintained by the elderly volunteered to be redistributed to the public. This can promote the physical health of the residents and creating life during this COVID-19 period

HIATUS Type of project: Primer Project, Public Design Architecture Year: 3 Semester: 2 This project involves designing a public space on an area in the neighbourhood that is under ultilised, improving the lives of the residents. “A pause or a break from in continuity in a sequence or activity”

The Hiatus is a space where anyone can take a break from their fast pace life while providing a mental boost to push them forward. The lightweight look of the structure is able to uplift the users mood, with the crips white interior providing a blank canvas for a peace of mind, balanced out by the prescence of greens scattered around. Privacy and openess coexist through the different way of sitting, from sitting face to face to sitting around with the beer crates.

The idea of using nature to improve students productivity comes from research showing that studying in nature helps to improve memory functions and memory span. My design focus not only on providing greeneries but to also allow students to study and interact, with influence of the natural environment.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGIES PASSIVE STRATEGY

ACTIVE STRATEGY

Cross-ventilation is obtained by rotating wall panels which allows air of certain directions to pass through the class rooms.

Solar panels are installed on the roof to power the school. The school is orientated in a way where the roof is exposed to maximum sunlight.

Natural lighting can be achieved as the wall panels can open and adjust to the path of the sun. Passive cooling can be achieved due to the presence of eaves and trees

Solar water heating panels are installed on the roof to provide hot water in the shower

PANORAMA CONCEPT IDEA / DESIGN INTENT

The buildings are wrapped up by layers of walls depicting elements of polaroid film tapes

Polaroids are taken to depict a scene in a split second which holds unforgettable memories even over a long time. This emphasises that the limited bird viewing time that only happens during moments every year should be cherished. For some it can be a once in a lifetime experience that will be treasured even across a very long time and with climate change and human’s damage to the environment, some species of bird might also be one of the last time people stand a chance to marvel at.

SITE A PLAN 1:200

The observation points consist of different layers of walls of different function, to create a comfortable framed view from all angles while keeping the users camouflaged from the sensitive wildlife

USER Families, couples, nature lovers and photographers are potential users

SCREEN LAYERS

OBSERVATION TOWER SECTION 1:100

Different layers of screens are used to achieve different effect in perspective of the wildlife and the observers. The inner most layer made up of thick 3D printed walls that are of great sound insulation. It is used to wrap the inner most room for for families with children as they might make loud noises that will scare the wildlife away. The outer layer walls consist of louvres and one-way glass walls that focus on concealing the observers Louvres are used to provide cross ventilation and natural lighting, while the one way glass walls provide a clear view of the birds without them noticing The layering of walls also ensures that photographers can get clear recordings of the birds without being affected by the glaring of the glass.

BUILDING MATERIAL

OBSERVATION POST SECTION 1:100

3D print material,Timber and Glass

PASSIVE SUSTAINABLE FEATURE Modern sustainable construction and manufacturing technology like 3D printing is used to construct all the buildings 3D printing facilitates more efficient designs and creates less waste. The parts are also lightweight which cna be used as floating platforms. Most importantly, these walls are thick for sound proofing and support purposes. Cross ventilation and natural sunlight are introduced in the building for less energy consumption

OTHER PROJECTS DREAM HAVEN Type of project: Primer Project, Public design Architecture Year: 3 Semester: 1 This project involves designing a public gathering area within square plot with the given theme The theme was dream To create a dream like environment for a temporary escape from reality By blurring the line between fantasy and reality, the mist can create a gateway for escapism. The use of rocks, white aesthetics and simple furnitures evoke a feeling of passivity. The building is shape in a form of purposeful ruins and simple elements to create distortion of time and space
