‘Youth Panel: Leading Change’ Internalizing Liberty, Equality, Fraternity- French National Motto
The panel discussion on ‘Youth Panel: Leading Change’ that convened on 26 May, 2019 was catered to the age group of 18-25
years. It highlighted discussions on change and also focused on the contemporary issues faced by the Nepali Youth, what they are doing to address change and what needs to be done for a progressive society.
Youth Panel—Leading Change OPENING REMARKS To mark the 70th anniversary of Nepal- France diplomatic relationship,
the French Embassy in Nepal organized the event, ”Youth Panel: Leading Change”. It is imperative to know about the culture, values and its influence, which both the nations inherit on their respective part. The event, ”Youth Panel: Leading Change", inculcated young panelist in between the age of 18-25. With the motto of, "Internalizing Liberty, Equality, Fraternity", it is aimed that this discourse will aid in bringing meaningful insights and motivate the youths of this nation. Youth Panel—Leading Change PANEL DISCUSSION Ranju Darshana emphasized that for today’s youth, paying attention to global affairs and fostering an inclination towards contemporary issues is imperative. It helps to draw substantial conclusions and supports the channelization of the learnings to propel positive changes towards socio-economic issues. Simple behavioral changes like placing bins in female restrooms are some of the issues to be brought up front. Likewise, while digital technologies have helped to stimulate this engagement, it is crucial for youth to be aware of the adverse effects of digital technologies. Such technologies serve more purposes than just entertainment. They are excellent tools for youths to access information on crucial aspects like understanding the rights prescribed in the constitution, institutionalizing right to information and focusing on mental
health that can support youth in bringing change and be the change.

Youth Panel—Leading Change PANEL DISCUSSION Shishir Kisi views the approach and attitude that today’s youth adopt towards handling problems as a setback to bringing change. Being influenced by the larger issues is not a solution, however, it is also essential to be proactive and aware of the surroundings. Bringing change from within and starting small can also bring ripple effects, in the overall development of the country. For this, there is a need for educational reform by revising decades-old subjects and syllabus. Shishir also noted that changing the perspective on the term freedom is also essential to bring change. Freedom is a unique and varied concept as it encompasses different types of independence, having different meanings associated with it, for different generations of people.

Youth Panel—Leading Change PANEL DISCUSSION Shefali Upreti, having studied literature, believes arts education is important for youth to incorporate values and develop critical analysis. Youth can achieve their dreams if they can attain the freedom to dwell upon their ideas and passion. Involvement of youth in developmental activities requires more inclination towards modern education, arts, and technology. Accordingly, youth empowerment can only be attained if these crucial factors are utilized. Reading, sharing information and supporting each other are the pertinent ways for youths to gain liberty and be the change. Similarly, developing a research culture, building regular reading habits and being resilient to changes are the important traits to be inculcated in youth. SHEFALI UPRETI
Youth Panel—Leading Change PANEL DISCUSSION Shraddha Gautam emphasized the indispensability of equal treatment of an individual and a group to bring change. Addressing the issues of gender inequality, she reiterated upon the significant role of youths in recognizing their ground realities and bringing positive changes. To transform the lives of women, the right values and knowledge should be garnered from home. It is essential that leadership demands accountability and transparency for better nation-building. Youth leaders acquiring these qualities can influence society and bring about constructive transformation. Moreover, innovation and vision in youth are among the significant factors that can aid in this transformation. Youth should be capable of building meaningful strategies, utilizing provided platforms and creating opportunities to be in the forefront seat of development of the nation.

Youth Panel—Leading Change MODERATOR Shrinkhala Khatiwada reiterated upon acquiring the right attitude to change the stereotypical mindset of society, for which societal taboos should be broken with knowledgeable discussions and openness. Likewise, in the quest of independence and change, youth often miss the crucial aspects of accountability and credibility towards development. Thus, it is imperative for youths to bring positive changes and collective efforts by instilling it in their behavior. The session, thus, concluded on a note that change requires youth to be self –initiative and proactive. SHRINKHALA KHATIWADA
