From the Editor’s Desk

WHAT an exciting time of the year!

All our hopes and dreams for the year haven’t had time to lose their shine and are still very much alive! Haha. In all seriousness, we hope everything you strive for and wish for comes true.

If you’re wishing for more family time, what better way to start than to take advantage of the fabulous Blacktown Show. It’s a great event that sees more and more people attracted to it every year, and for good reason, as you’ll see inside this edition there is something for absolutely everyone. A perfect venue to share quality time and make great memories.

If you’re a political nerd like me, you’ll love that there’s a Federal Election about to be called any day.

Those focussed on what is important to them locally and nationally will be interested in what candidates offer, and deciding who is the best fit to steer us into the next few years. Those uninterested can look forward to a sausage sanga when they go to cast their vote.

We’ve got so many events coming up! Celebrating Seniors, International Women’s Day, Easter and Anzac Day are all just around the corner. And who could forget it’s just a few more sleeps until the footy is back on!!

Nepean & Western News will be reporting on the Mighty Penrith Panther’s first game of the season in Vegas baby! Keep an eye on our Facebook pages and in print to follow all the fanfare.

Can Panthers make it 5 in ‘25?

I’m pretty confident we can. Bring it on!

Dynamic K9 duo keep prison safe

JUST before Christmas, Parklea Correctional Centre officer Shannon achieved his dream of becoming a K9 handler and he loves working with his new teammate – a five-year-old Kelpie named Buddy.

K9 Officer Buddy has been working at Parklea for four years, alongside his canine colleague Tassie the Labrador. Shannon has been wanting to join the canine team since he graduated as an officer in 2020.

“This is the best job in the gaol, as you get to work with dogs. Buddy is my best mate and I get to be around him 24/7 and he’s good company,” Shannon said.

“You build a good relationship with your best mate, which doesn’t stop when you leave work. It’s a unique thing.

“They become invested in you as well and they want to work to keep you happy.”

Shannon and Buddy play an important role at Parklea, searching for drugs to improve prison safety.

Buddy is a Passive Alert Drug Dog, which means he sits or lays down when he finds what he is looking for. His training involved learning to recognise several odours in different environments, so he can find drugs in cells, on people, in vehicles, as well as contraband buried underground.

Shannon and Buddy joined forces a few weeks before they undertook the intensive three-month K9 training course at Francis Greenway Correctional Complex to build rapport. Their bond grew whilst they were put through their paces, and they have

learned to read each other’s actions and moods.

“As part of the training, you learn how to read the dog when he finds drugs – a certain stare, sit or position.

“I let him know he did what I wanted by giving him a verbal marker, which lets the dog know he did the desired behaviour, and a reward is coming, which can be either food or play.

SHOWTIMES

“But if Buddy isn’t feeling 100 per cent or it’s hot, he can fatigue quickly, so I know he needs to rest.”

Shannon became an officer after a career in the fitness industry, as he was looking for something new and exciting and he was attracted to the K9 handler role as he likes to keep learning.

“That’s what makes the job interesting. No two days are the same and Buddy and I are learning on the job.

“Buddy has a good energy and he’s a bit quirky. He’s a dog who wants to work hard and he has a good work ethic. We complement each other and work well together.”

To be a good K9 handler, Shannon said you have to be invested in the role and work as a team.

“Everything you do, you’re doing it to benefit the dog. Work doesn’t stop once you leave work, as it comes home with you.

“You have to keep up your fitness and training and be flexible and have integrity.”

Shannon said having Buddy on site was a deterrent to inmates and visitors thinking of bringing drugs into the prison, but it was a team effort.

“We work closely with Intel and we use their information for searches. We also work with the Incident Response Team when we do searches. I like work working within the unit and offering my experience and qualifications.”

Blacktown City Council unveils exciting new design for Seven Hills Community Hub

BLACKTOWN City Council has unveiled draft designs of the highly anticipated Seven Hills Community Hub, a $35.8 million project that will transform the town centre.

The project, funded by the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants (WSIG) program, will create a vibrant, multi-purpose space that will bring a growing community together.

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the Seven Hills Community Hub is the first of 7 major projects planned for Blacktown City under the WSIG program.

“This Hub is more than just a building, it’s more than just a library, it’s a long-term investment in our community, providing much-needed facilities for learning, creativity, and connection,” Mayor Bunting said. “I know local residents will love it and make it a true community centre.”

Blacktown City Council is excited about a bright future for Seven Hills, with a new masterplan to guide growth

and renewal. The plan will boost local jobs, increase housing choices, and improve public spaces and transport. By investing in better infrastructure and community facilities, Council is making sure Seven Hills thrives as a great place to live, work, and do business.

The state-of-the-art two-storey Hub at Boomerang Place, next to Seven Hills Station, will feature:

• A permanent library for children and adults , replacing the current mobile library service

• Study spaces for students

• Meeting and event rooms for community groups

• A recording studio for creative projects

• A multi-use function room for up to 250 people

• Modern amenities, including a kitchen and accessible bathrooms

The library will be named after former Chief Librarian of Blacktown City Betty Malthus. This follows a suggestion by former Blacktown City Councillor Kathie Collins OAM.

Dr Hugh McDermott, Member for Prospect and Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General said, “The Seven Hills Community Hub is a great win for residents in our local community. This will create a new space for our community to learn, work and play, all right next to Seven Hills Station and local businesses along Boomerang Place.”

The Hub is being designed by award-winning architects Welsh and Major, who are committed to delivering an inviting and sustainable facility.

Principal Architect Chris Major said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Blacktown City Council on this project. Our design will ensure the Hub is not just functional but a joyful and welcoming place, fostering learning, creativity, and community spirit.”

Local residents and business owners have also welcomed the

project. Sue Walker, a regular user of Blacktown City Council’s Mobile Library, said: “Having a permanent library with longer operating hours will make books and other resources far more accessible for everyone.”

Meanwhile, Director of Seven Hills Laundry Service Meena Mani believes the Hub will be a catalyst for renewal. “This project will reinvigorate the town centre and create new opportunities for our community,” she said.

Blacktown City Council encourages residents to attend the upcoming information sessions to learn more about the design and share their feedback.

Community members are invited to preview the new architectural design at upcoming information sessions:

• Saturday, 15 February, 11 am – 1 pm at Seven Hills Station

• Thursday, 20 February, 5 pm – 7 pm at Seven Hills Station

The gorgeous Mounty from Mt Druitt Police Station

FOLLOWERS of local area commands of facebook will have noticed there’s a new ‘pet detective’ on the block, appearing in many posts from Mt Druitt Police Area Command.

Last week all was revealed about how this little ball of cuteness won the hearts of our local cops and earned a place on the Force.

“The gentleman in the photo below is Detective Chief Inspector Tickner

and the gorgeous little man on his shoulder is our Mounty. Mounty was found in a very, very bad way by Mr Tickner in bushes not too far from the Mt Druitt Police Station on 11 December 2024,” a spokesperson wrote on the station’s Facebook page.

“Mr Tickner brought him to the station and put him in the care of someone to make sure he survived.

“Shortly after being found, Mounty attended the vet and was estimated to be born on 7 November 2024. He is a real baby. Mounty knows who saved him and sits on Mr Tickner’s shoulder and regularly gets petted.

“Detective Superintendent Batchelor is the Commander of Mt Druitt Police Area Command (PAC). Mr Batchelor is the man who gave Mounty a home. After Mounty recovered, Mr Batchelor welcomed him into Mt Druitt PAC so he would have a forever home and staff could benefit from time with a pet.

“Mounty is always happy to cuddle Mr Batchelor.

“These are the gentlemen who saved Mounty and gave him a home.”

Well done gentlemen, and what a great addition, Mt Druitt Police! Anyone wishing to follow Mounty’s

career in the Force can do so by following their Facebook page: Mt Druitt Police Area Command.

Antique Machinery

Sydney Antique Machinery Club is back again this year. They will be easy to find by the sound of old engines running like they did when Grandpa was a boy.

Come and have a look and a yarn with the Club members who have brought a few samples of their hobby for you to enjoy in a good restoration they run as badly as they did when they were new. Tell them about your own favourite memory of old machinery from when you were growing up in the (so called) good old days. The Club was formed to bring together people with an interest in old machinery, particularly old engines and tractors and the equipment driven by them.

The Club promotes the preservation and restoration of this equipment and its members provide advice and assistance to each other. The Club meets monthly at Hawkesbury Showground, between Windsor & Richmond and organises one major rally each year on the third weekend in September.

They also attend many events run by other organisations, and conduct displays of their machinery.

Year of the Snake welcomed in Blacktown City

FIREWORKS, lion dancing and drumming were all part of the fun as thousands of people enjoyed Blacktown City Council’s Lunar New Year celebrations at Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside.

Performers from a variety of cultures provided cultural workshops and entertained crowds in the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens on 7 February.

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting wished everyone a prosperous year ahead.

“The snake symbolises wisdom and transformation in Asian culture,

and we are all wiser for embracing cultural events like this and learning about our neighbours,” he said.

“An increasing part of our community hails from Asia, so it’s only fitting Council provides opportunities for them to celebrate their identity and heritage.”

Census figures show a considerable increase in Blacktown City residents who were born in Asian countries in recent years.

Children and adults enjoyed the occasion with free craft activities such as origami, dough sculptures, fan decorating and face painting.

SEPTEMBER 1916. It is freely admitted that the people of St Marys through their civic and social leaders possess the facility of organization in a large degree and are likewise gifted in a remarkable manner with the genius of co-operation, especially in regard to patriotic and charitable undertakings. Those laudable predispositions were never more worthily applied than on the occasion of the recent social in aid of augmenting the funds of the Nepean District Cottage Hospital, a function so to speak that comprised “two editions,’’ the adults’ dance and the juvenile social. The splendid success achieved by the dual event attests conclusively to the assiduous, tactful and business-like methods and the endeavours of the ladies’ committee aided by Mayor Alderman Frank Brell President and Treasurer and Mr Harry Dollin Honorary Secretary and others of the sterner sex and to the social instincts and benevolent feeling of the good citizens of St Marys and district who always respond to the cry of need, either national or local and loyal to their greater or smaller obligations. At Friday night’s social, around 80 couples attended, some of whom had come from long distances and the ballroom (the Protestant Hall), was filled by the gay and merry assemblage whirling around to the waltz or in the somewhat different evolutions of the quadrille etc presented truly a most animated and inspiriting spectacle. The music supplied by that very efficient and popular body the Penrith Orchestra under the baton of Doctor F C Higgins was of the brightest and most glee inspiring character. The orchestra was relieved after ten o’clock by willing accessories of Misses May Thompson, J Brell, G White, B Carpenter and Mr Joe Brell. Messrs G Adams and James Brell were M.C’s. The hospital staff was represented by Nurses Greentree, Bassetti and Scahill. An excellent supper up to best metropolitan standard was provided, the ladies being most assiduous in providing for the gastronomical requirements of patrons and as there were three sittings at suppertime, it will be readily understood the indomitable ladies’ committee had a heroic task supervising the culinary etc. The ladies’ costumes were invariably of the latest fashion, but as the social was more in the way of an enjoyable benevolent function than a regular orthodox ball a list of the dresses was not taken. The personnel of the ladies’ committee was as follows: (husband’s names), Mesdames F Brell (Mayoress), G Turner senior, W Hackett senior, C Adams, W Sims, J J Walsh, Mrs Fehrenbach, J Barrett, P Barrett, P Woodland, Mrs Viney and F Elgood, (Maiden Names) Misses M Hope, E Brell and J Guild. Others who rendered appreciable assistance included Mrs Mummery, Misses G Lamming, M Schmidt and Hildred (Burwood), E Moore and J Bridgefoot. Under the genial and tactful leadership of the Mayoress everything conspired to achieve the sought-for success. The gentlemen assisting were the Mayor Ald Brell, Ald H Dollin, Ald R Beacroft, (doorkeepers) Messrs W Sims, G Dollin and H Pye and Mr C Hales who attended to the “hot-water boiling department,’’ etc. The children’s social was held on the Saturday night and was, in point of attendance and brilliancy, as great a success as that of the previous evening. There was a delightful throng of fully 250 children present and about the same number of adult spectators and beyond doubt the largest assemblage ever known at a social dancing carnival at St Marys. Many of the juveniles wore fancy costumes, amongst the number being representatives of all the gala dresses of the Allied

nations, historical and topical characters and a couple of “poster’’ costumes having reference to local advertising matter. The children came from all parts of the district and a very large contingent of course hailing from St Marys town exhibiting wonderful aplomb and facility in the dances hugely enjoying the occasion. Adult representatives of the Nepean Cottage Hospital were also present. A dainty supper was provided for the juveniles who no doubt will recall the 1916 social at St Marys as one of the most memorable of the social achievements of childhood. The music was supplied in first-class style by Miss M Thompson (piano) and Mr J Brell (violin), extras being contributed by several other willing and capable instrumentalists. At the conclusion of the children’s session the adult devotees of the light fantastic “religion’’ invaded the arena and “kept the ball’’ rolling in merriest until midnight’s mystic hour encroached upon the joyous scene. We believe over £30 was taken at the doors and it is expected that the receipts including tickets sold, collections etc including a sum of £1/15s for bouquets sold by Miss Mitchell will eventually reach close to £50, a relatively magnificent result and St Marys deserves the warmest congratulations of all friends of the hospital. We feel the event will be a social beacon light to others and a standard of achievement that will be no doubt emulated as closely as possible by those loyal-hearted supporters of the hospital, the people of St Marys and district. The unprecedented success of the dual social (adults and juveniles) has made it plain that St Marys has a full mortgage on the admirable faculty of “rising to the occasion,’’ and has shown that despite the insistent calls of the war and the general disruption of affairs it has a practical and praiseworthy manner of extending and applying the saving principles of that Charity which begins at home and which is the real genesis of religion and human fraternity. It is said that it’s a way they have at St Marys, the way of doing things unitedly for the best advantage of the local or general interest. We are informed that probably the returns of the social will aggregate between £50 and £60.

DOptions for homebuyers who don’t have a 20% deposit

ESPITE new research revealing borrowers need six-figure savings for a 20% home deposit, experts say there’s still plenty of ways for them to take their first steps up the property ladder.

Despite rising interest rates historically leading to a drop in housing prices, the cost of buying a home in Australia is becoming increasingly unaffordable when you consider that a small flat in Sydney could set you back $900,000 at the moment, saving a 20% deposit to buy that flat is $180,000 which can seem an insurmountable task.

Having little or no deposit doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get a home loan to buy a home.

There are currently a few government schemes available to help with deposit requirements – first home buyers, single parents and shared equity schemes have helped people get into the market with a smaller deposit and avoid paying lenders mortgage insurance (LMI).

For those that don’t qualify for the schemes, there is still the option to borrow a larger amount of the property value with LMI in place.

There are low deposit home loan options where you can buy a house with as little as 5% of the purchase price.

You can get a low deposit home loan with just 5% down on the purchase price. For an $900,000 home, that’s a minimum of $45,000. You’ll also need to cover stamp duty, upfront costs, and possibly lenders mortgage insurance (LMI) for loans over 80% of the property’s value. If you lack the 5% saved, there are other options to explore.

What is lenders mortgage insurance (LMI)?

Lenders mortgage insurance (LMI) is an extra cost, but it lets buyers enter the property market with a smaller deposit, rather than the usual 20%. LMI protects the lender if the loan defaults, ensuring they

recoup their money if the property is sold at a loss. This can provide the same security as a 20% deposit.

For borrowers, LMI might appear as an added expense, but it allows them to buy property with, say, just a 5% deposit. For an $900,000 property, this reduces the deposit from $180,000 to $45,000. The insurance premium is typically a one-off payment, but you can sometimes include in your loan amount so that you are paying for it month-by-month along with your mortgage.

Options for homebuyers who don’t have a 20% deposit.

• How A Guarantor Can Help.

If you lack a substantial home loan deposit, you can explore family pledge options to obtain credit, specifically service guarantees and security guarantees.

Service guarantees are rarer and involve a family member guaranteeing repayments and being named on the property title, but this may disqualify firsttime buyers from government grants.

Security guarantees are more common, where a relative or friend (often a parent) uses their home equity to guarantee the borrower’s deposit.

For example, with an $900,000 loan in a security guarantor setup, the borrower/s take on 80% of the loan, which is $720,000, in their own name/s. The remaining $180,000 is guaranteed jointly by the guarantor/s and borrower/s, reducing the guarantor’s liability and eliminating the need for lender’s mortgage insurance. This arrangement is suitable when borrowers lack a significant deposit but their parents own a home. It’s a great option as long as the parents are comfortable with their child’s ability to pay back the loan.”

• A financial gift.

The high cost of property today means many parents and other close relatives are happy to help

CROSSWORD

their children enter the property market through a one-off financial gift. Many first home buyers now have help from their parents when it comes to saving for a deposit with more than 30% getting help this way.

Many lenders will count the cost of this gift towards your deposit amount, although they may also want to see that you also have a history of regular savings.

• Using the equity in your own home.

Not all buyers looking to buy with no deposit are first home buyers. You may already own your own home and now you’re looking to buy an investment property. In this instance, a lender may give you the option of using the equity in your home to cover the deposit of the place you’re purchasing.

To take advantage of this, you’ll usually need to have enough equity in your home to cover a 20% deposit on both places, unless you also take out lenders mortgage insurance.

Applying for a home loan.

When applying for a home loan, remember that your deposit is just one factor lenders assess. Lenders will also consider your ability to service the loan, taking into account your credit history, income, expenses, and employment details. Some low deposit home loan providers may impose higher interest rates and fees.

The application process can be complex, requiring additional financial and credit information.

Blacktown City slow off the blocks

BLACKTOWN City has had a sluggish start to their 2025 campaign, salvaging a 1-1 draw in the opening round against defending Champions Marconi and disappointing Blacktown supporters with a 4-0 loss at home to NWS Spirit in round 2. Round 3’s game will be away to the Central Coast Mariners and a win is a must to gain confidence in the early stages of the new season.

Head Coach, Mark Crittenden, will be calling on all his experience to have his side ready to play. The game against Central Coast will be Coach Critto’s 415th first grade game at the helm of Blacktown City, a feat unparalleled in professional sports coaching. Coach Crittenden’s passion for Blacktown City goes way back to his start at the Under 11’s and he has progressed to not only his 400+ games at the Senior level but has built a winning culture of ‘Team’ football.

“Obviously, we have not had the start we were looking for but with several new players it is going to take some time before we play Blacktown City football. Our opening game against Marconi was a true test giving up a goal in the third minute and going down to ten men in the second half with a red card. We dug deep to salvage a 1-1 draw and weathered a determined Marconi team desperate for a win”, said Coach Crittenden. “Round 2 was a disappointing effort as we played what has become a bogey team for us. Trailing 1-0 at the half we came out determined but another red card limiting us to ten men was a significant factor”, Coach Critto added.

Young Goalkeeper Cayden Henderson has been put to the test early as he has had to defend 35

shots on goal in the opening two rounds. Replacing veteran Blacktown City Goalie Tristen Prendergast who moved to Sydney United, Henderson has been steadily building his credentials despite his young age. Coach Crittenden has put his faith in the Blacktown City Junior product and in a tense opening game against Marconi he withstood the pressure to hold the defending Champions to a single goal from 17 attempts.

Veteran defender, Grant Lynch, has also started strong winning honours in the opening game. Game 2 was not as positive for Lynch as he received a red card in the second half against Spirit to put Blacktown once again in a tough situation to play with only ten men.

Blacktown City now heads up North for a round 3 clash with the Central Coast. The young side were put to the test last week against powerhouse Apia Leichhardt going down 6-2 and will be up for

the clash with Blacktown who are yet to find their winning formula. Game time is 5pm and you can catch the action ‘Live’ on NPL.TV.

Round 4 will have Blacktown City back at home on Sunday, March 2nd at Landen Stadium. The opponent will be a confident Apia Leichhardt ensuring a great game. Despite the early rounds, Apia will be looking to send a clear message to Blacktown that they will be one of the teams to beat for the 2025 Championship. Blacktown scored a 6-3 win over Apia in the opening round last year, but the current form would be favouring Apia.

Blacktown City Women will open their 2025 season with an away contest against Inter Lions on Sunday, March 2nd. Head of Women’s football, Michael Hawthorne, has virtually a new team in his second year at the helm. “We felt we needed to get a fresh start and assemble a group of young women hungry to play Blacktown City football. The new squad has shown plenty of fighting spirit and I am excited to get the season underway”, said Coach Hawthorne.

Blacktown City FC is a Diamond Member of the Greater Blacktown Business Chamber. On Thursday, February 27th, Blacktown will be hosting the Chamber’s ‘Business After 5’ in the corporate suite at Landen Stadium. 100 corporate members of the Chamber are expected to be on hand to see firsthand the corporate hospitality on offer at all Blacktown City home games. Blacktown’s ‘Premier Partner’, the Hudson Hotel, will be providing all the food on the night.

Blacktown City FC VS Apia Leichhardt, Sunday, March 2nd at Landen Stadium, 5 Quinn Avenue, Seven Hills. Game time is 3PM! Go Blacktown City!

Elijah Andrew signs with Motoschool for ASBK Season

LOCAL junior motorcycle rider

Elijah Andrew (Marayong) has been chosen in a select team of 5 riders in the #Motoschool Racing Team.

Elijah will be making his Supersport 300 debut, in addition to continuing in the R3 Cup, whilst the other 4 team riders will be in multiple classes for the demanding 8-round national series of the 2025 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK).

The first round is being held at the iconic Phillip Island circuit, over February 21-23, in conjunction with the World Superbike Championship.

Speaking following the Motoschool Racing Team announcement, Motoschool CEO Haydan Parker said, “Racing in the Australian Superbike Championship feels like a natural progression for Motoschool. This has been a project I have been shaping for some time, and I wanted to ensure we had not only the right riders, but team sponsors and personnel involved in this campaign. I have made a commitment

to all involved to be in Australian Motorcycle Racing for the long-term and whilst we initially intended to start only in SuperSport 300 and support riders in Oceania Junior Cup, we have however included Superbike with Tom Edwards, who is returning to Australia after many successful years in the World Superbike paddock.”

“I’d really like to thank Haydan and the team at MotoSchool for the opportunity this year, but particularly for the style of tuition I’ve (already) been able to receive,” Elijah said.

“Racing in ASBK is such a huge challenge but I feel well-prepared after competing for two years in the

Oceania Junior Cup. I live twenty minutes from Sydney Motorsport Park and the development I’ve had as a rider with the technology Motoschool use, it makes me really excited to start the season.”

The first round of the 2025 ASBK racing season is 21-23 February on the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit, a classic and purpose-built motorcycle track that is undulating, fast and flowing, suiting the rhythm of motorcycling riding perfectly. First opened in 1956, the Island is a pure riders’ circuit.

Local riders include Jonathan Nahlous (Glenwood) and Jack Favelle

(Cattai) in Superbikes (3 races), Jake Farnsworth (Glenhaven) in Supersport (3 races); Elijah Andrew (Marayong), William Hunt (Mulgoa Rise) and Zachary Russo (Sackville North) in Supersport 300 (3 races).

There will also be a huge international contingent of riders at Phillip Island for two World SBK races and two World Supersport races over the three days of racing.

#Motoschool is Australia’s newest destination for immersive in-person motorcycle coaching and rider training, providing a safe and controlled environment to learn, practice and develop a rider’s skills.
