I am an artist, spatial / furniture designer with a background of MA in Interior and Spatial Design from the University of the Arts London and BA in Wood Products Processing from the University of British Columbia and Beijing Foresty University.

Design, to me, is to create a story that people, arts, and nature can come together and share a life and a journey. My design experiences bring me possibilities to design from diverse perspectives including materials, cultures, nature, people and design language. All the creative things are connected, it is not about cultures or languages, it is about ideas and people.

ALYA.

Resort Design. 2018

Alya is a residence and resort design project located in Kelowna, BC Canada. During this project, I worked as one of the interior designers with architects, structural engineers, lighting designer, local departments, construction team and other professionals to create this resort on a cliff. I participated and worked on space planning, concept creating, 3D modeling, rendering, material selections, furniture selections and finishes elections.

Office Design. 2018

As a growing young event planning studio, the client would like to communicate with their clients as much as possible, so the office space is designed in a bright and welcome way. The interior space has movable furniture, products gallery, movie space, photo corner, meeting space and photo walls. All the special thoughts will encourage this young company to grow on their own pace and always allow them to look back, to see the unique memories.

The office was designed in 2018, located in Vancouver Canada. Currently in use for 4 years.

Because of the flexibility of the space, the office can be arranged to meet different types of events. Gathering people together is main goal of its founders. The space is open for future endeavors.

Architecture Design and Material Study.

The recent years can be a sad period for the international wood market. Insect infestation affects log production from the forests. Affected wood is downgraded for sale. I found the beauty and possibilities of using the deteriorated wood to generate new material, improving the physical performance of wood, also breaking the traditional sense of wood. Wood can be both powerful and colourful.

Decayed wood is usually caused by fungi. The wood is fragile, the inner structure of wood is damaged by the fungi when it's growing on the wood surface. By replacing the lignin with epoxy resin, the wood fibre is still held in place. With the hot-pressing process, the wood can be formed into various shapes, thicknesses and lengths.

The minimum height of the installation is 1.5m, along with the 1m width restriction. People go through the narrow tunnel oneby-one, acting like the fungi deteriorating the wood cell walls.

The global pandemic has changed people’s life. There are chances that this change will be permanent. Many people lost their jobs or incomes during Covid, especially the industries like artists and designer. The Post Covid Community is designed for artists, designers and art related students to live and work together, helping each other to get through the hard period of time. The iconic community can also helps to attract people to come and enjoy the power of arts together.

"My name is Robert, I am a painting instructor of the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Community Collage. Classes now became online because of Covid, but not painting classes. I still need to go to school on a daily basis for small groups of students to give them face-to-face instructions. The gaps between classes are usually short, so I am always in a rush on the way to the schools."

The community is splited into 2-levels for privacy issue.

Lower level including residential and individual studios.

Public essential rooms are located on each sides of upper level for easy entry.

Individual call rooms are at the edges of the upper floor, to control the noise level.

Meeting rooms including different sizes, for multiple uses.

Rest rooms are easy to find all around the second level.

The functional areas of the community are designed base on the habit of its residence.

The main open display area is at the centre of the public area, to attract more people and visitors.

Workshop areas are providing enough spaces for holding any events, lectures or activities.

Private and public areas are spread into the community but with clear boundaries in between.

The main functions of each community can be overlap, so people are free to translate between different communities for better development.

Just like the oringinal site of this Post Covid Community - the old Vancouver Sugar Factory, we came from the period of time that people are mostly working as labours, now we are facing the new era of internet and cultural services. Art is where the spirit of human exists, and people are tend to make their life better.

While people spending more time on their laptops and phones, less communication occurs in the real life. Thus, the open space is designed to encourage people to look at each other’s eyes again, giving and receiving at the same time.

The Upside Down.

Social Issue Solution Study.

2019 - 2020

The Upside Down project is aiming to solve the gathering of homeless people in Railtown and Chinatown District of Vancouver. From the face-to-face research, the main reason of homeless who do not work is that they do not have the open mind to go back to the society. This project is trying to help them to accept the new changes that they might have to face step-by-step.

The research of the Canada BC government shows the total number of homeless in Metro Vancouver area is increasing in the past 15 years. Most homeless people do not have a shelter to live in, many of them are having mental illness. Based on all of the information, it can be very difficult for the homeless to go back to the society.

The privacy level of the unit is going down in a reasonable way. To help the homeless people to open their minds, the public area is added slowly.

This design provides users enough time to recover from their psychological trauma.

Isolation Pods.

Temporary Prefabricated Hospital Design. 2020

This project aims to react to the Covid-19 situation that the whole world is facing right now. A large number of high risk people need to self-isolate and be observed, I came up with a temporary self-isolation and multi-level public medicine community to deal with the lack of the hospital space.

General personal residence space including single room, triple room and quintuple room.

The space is divided into 2 levels to save room.

Generate single living space into multi-space unit.

Combining multi-space units into larger units, to facilitate the management of medical staff.

Multi-dimensional openings for ventilation and lighting according to isolated rooms.

After the A/B unit is connected with the algorithm, the entire structure is connected to the ground by adding various forms of C unit for the supply of materials.

Unit B is a multi-purpose unit, which can be used as a separate isolation unit or a connecting unit to connect each A units together.

The cylindrical unit is easy to manage the ventilation and pipe arrangement. The appearance is designed to be full of fluidity.

The basic units cotains five different shapes. The are supporting the entire building to undernearth.

The function units are used for transportation of foods, supplies, water and all the essentials that people in the building would need during treatment or quarantine.

High End Furniture Design.

2018 - 2022

From 2018 - 2022, I have been working as a professional furniture designer for four years in North America. My design includes customize furniture, hospitality furniture and high end residential and office furniture. All designs are including the whole life cycle of the product - from research, to concept design, sketch ideas, material selection, model building until sample prototype and communicate with mass production process in our parterner factories.

Height adjustable outdoor day bed design. Corporated with waterproof outdoor fabric supplier and outdoor metal suppliers.

Backrest and pillow are adjustable, offers customizable finish options.

Prototype tested in Asia factories.

In the current world, people are more concern with their health while working. Standing desk has become a trend for offices and home office users. The intention of this design was to have various sizes for different groups of people, keep the function of automatic standing desks but hide the wires and power hubs to keep the clean look of the furniture itself.

Configurations testing.

Sectional sofa design is a prototype that I tried to use various trending materials, testing the combinations, and finally tried to challenge myself to create a sofa set that could fit in any spaces.

Furniture, to me, should be flexible and icon. Users should be able to select the correct size and have the option to switch into different shapes and sizes in the future. As the visual focus of a living room, sofa should be both iconic, comfy, and alive - so it can grow with the space, and the family.

Home use standing desk - finishes can be customized. All available finishes are environmental friendly, considering both the sustainability side of manufacturing and the aesthetics of the furniture.

Customized hospitality furniture design. Including overall concept design, detailed drawing packages, 3D model instructions for factory, material sourcing.

Hotels are among North America, 4 star hotels and above, including luxury designer hotels and worldwise hotel brands.

Lighting designs includes floor lamp, pedants, table lamps, outdoor lamps. lateens and wall lights.

Echo.

Echo is the space to find back our own voices. In the process of confiding, what needed is not the respond, but to listen. Just knowing there is someone listening.

The sound in the first nine months of life is the sound of the mother’s heartbeat, which is the first and only sound we hear before we come into the world. In a space with only the sound of heartbeats, it is easier for us to let go of our defences and confide with the sense of safety. These heartbeats are not only a signal to listen, but also a kind of encouragement without any judgements.

Chamber Design + Sound Installation. 2021 - 2022

As we are currently living in a world that allows all the voices to speak loudly, our voices have all been drowned out by the voices of others. We tend to give up our own voice to become part of the majority.

Walking through the speakers, the chamber is for the individuals to focus on their own voice, providing the space that the process of selfexploration could happen.

Echo experiment.

Heart beats are transfered to the people on the other side of the confessional chamber by bluetooth electronic stethoscope. With the RAM material to provide the extra level of slience, the room will be full filled by the only voice of the person and the heartbeats as the background to encourage this person to dig deeper into his/her own “wants“.

The people sitting in front is the “listener“, yet also the confidant.

Concept Theatre Design. 2022

While the whole environment is in almost silent, base on the feedback from people who has been into a anechoic chamber, they should be able to hear the air flows in the interior, their blood moving in their body, the sound of people moving and cloths rubbing. After a while, people should be able to hear the hearbeats, then moving into the mental slience.

The Chamber is considered as an immersive environments, using architectural volume, light, and sound.

In the semi-anechoic chamber, sounds are absorbed with no reflection happening. With the standing platform pushed back, this theatre is the extension of the Echo project.

Trace.

Installation Experiment.

2022

In the Trace experiment, I tracked traces that created by different individuals then noticed the various result after – the motions of each individual are connected to their emotions and personalities. When there are no restrictions, people are feeling more comfortable to explore around following their inner desires, hiding behind a piece of curtain, jumping around or crossing a piece of curtain by lifting it up etc., these actions are converted into paths, analyzed by groups listed here.

By record the actions from each participates, I connect action of every 5 seconds to create the boundary of a person’s exploration routine. Since there are no limits, all the actions and routes are different and I found the shape of the boundary is somehow reflecting a person’s personalities.
