BEAVER COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL Cambridge, MA

Activitas’s relationship with Beaver Country Day School began in 2013 when our firm was hired to lead the design efforts to ambitiously reorganize, renovate, and reinvigorate the campus’s Upper Field. Following a successful construction, the project received a Merit Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects, underscoring Beaver’s commitment to a “futurefocused education” - always aiming to look beyond tradition. Since the Upper Field’s inception, Activitas has naturally transitioned into an oncall Landscape Architect for the campus, conducting a campus-wide accessibility study, overseeing pathway improvements, and working handin-hand with the Beaver Marketing Department in development of new outdoor signage. In 2015 Activitas partnered with Beaver and its Summer Camp Program Director to design and implement a new woodland playground, and in 2017 Activitas lead efforts to renovate the school’s natural grass Lower Field.

“After completing a major addition to the school, the back side of the campus needed some attention. The field had been used as a staging site for the construction project and needed a complete rebuild. Drainage, particularly on the softball field had always been an issue and Activitas worked with the school to address that and a few other concerns. Now the school has a top quality softball

The Main Field project was recognized by the American Sports Builders Association as the 2019 Single Field Facility of the Year.

Interscholastic Athletics and Wellness Experience

Located in the heart of the Dexter Southfield campus, Main Field is the school’s outdoor activity hub for athletics, physical education, recreation, summer camps, and special campus events. Activitas worked closely with Dexter Southfield administration to provide fast-track design, permitting, and construction administration services for a first-class athletic field facility that also fit seamlessly into their existing campus fabric. One feature from the project that serves the entire school community is an elegant amphitheater of tiered masonry walls and stairways. It was built into an existing natural grass slope and provides premium site lines to every point of the field. A detailed analysis of existing and proposed circulation patterns was also performed. A hierarchical system of walkways and drives around the facility provide connectivity between major campus elements, including the newly constructed Kraft Fieldhouse & Arena.

MILTON ACADEMY Milton, MA

Activitas has worked with Milton Academy on various athletic field projects for the past two decades. After performing a feasibility study for the first synthetic turf field on campus, Activitas was retained to provide complete design, permitting, and construction administration services for the renovation of an undersized natural grass field.

The Berylson Field project was recognized by the American Sports Builders Association as a 2020 Distinguished Single Field Facility.

Interscholastic Athletics and Wellness Experience

Through the design of the synthetic turf field, Activitas and Milton Academy re-imagined how the existing facility is used, accessed, and viewed. The infield of adjacent Nash Field, Milton’s varsity baseball field, was reconfigured to reduce an overly expansive “out-of-play” area behind home plate to allow for the expansion of the Berylson Field. A formal walkway, gateway and granite stairway leads student athletes and spectators from parking areas and the campus athletic center to the Berylson Field. Activitas took full advantage of the existing topography at the sidelines of the field to create unique experiences for spectators and student athletes alike. A couple of the design enhancements at the sidelines of the field were a tiered masonry spectator seating area that is elevated above the field for ideal site lines and intimate team areas that are visually obstructed from adjacent residential properties.

PHILLIPS ACADEMY ANDOVER Andover, MA

Patrick Maguire, Owner and Managing Principal of Activitas, has been a campus landscape architect and athletic field consultant for “Andover” since the late 1990’s. Pat began working at Andover during a campus master plan providing design recommendations for the campus as a whole. In the early 2000’s Pat and his team took a deeper, more comprehensive look at the campus for expansion of athletic facilities. This included consideration for reconfiguration of courts and fields, additional outdoor recreational space to support growing programs, and surface types along with lighting to maximize usage of space.

Activitas continues to work with Andover providing review and modifications to the Campus Master Plan as new projects are implemented. Our commitment to our clients is everlasting, as our relation with Andover exhibits.

Interscholastic Athletics and Wellness Experience

Several projects resulted from this master plan with members of Activitas providing the design services. Phelps Field, the existing Varsity Football Stadium, was renovated from grass to synthetic turf with new athletic lighting to improve field quality and support extended usage of the stadium. Smoyer Field was renovated to replace the existing under performing natural grass varsity soccer field with a new under-drained and irrigated high performance natural grass field. Most recently, Activitas assisted Andover with the Sorota Track Renovation - a full renovation of the existing track and throwing/jumping event areas.

THE RIVERS SCHOOL Weston, MA

The Rivers School’s growth over the past decade has resulted in the development of several new buildings on campus. This includes the Revers Center for Science and Visual Arts which was constructed on a portion of the school’s pre-existing turf football field in the middle of the campus. Rivers retained Activitas in 2018 to provide design services for the complete renovation of Davis Field to support a number of their other outdoor athletic programs, including a new home for football. Davis Field was an undersized grass field, but through the acquisition of an adjacent property and utilization of unused campus space, Activitas was able to expand the field to fit two full size playing fields greatly expanding the usability of the space. Located within two different towns (Weston and Natick), along a historic town road, within close proximity to a neighborhood, and within buffer zones to resource areas, Activitas and Rivers worked closely together to gain approvals through Conservation Commission and Planning Boards within the Towns. Through careful planning, design, and project team coordination the project was designed, permitted, and constructed to meet the needs of Rivers and their community on-time and on-budget. ST. SEBASTIAN’S SCHOOL Needham, MA

St. Sebastian’s and Activitas’ relationship began when the principals of Activitas designed the complete renovation of St. Sebastian’s upper athletic fields. The Arrows’ baseball, soccer, football, and lacrosse fields were converted from natural grass to synthetic turf and a new natural grass practice field was created through adjacent property acquisition.

In 2017, St. Sebastian’s and Activitas dusted off the play book and partnered once again for the re-surfacing design of the synthetic turf fields that were originally constructed in 2007. Simultaneously, St. Sebastian’s was undergoing a significant expansion to their main school building and worked with Activitas to completely redesign their existing natural grass, lower athletic field in synthetic turf. The existing field was undersized and used by their JV baseball and soccer programs. Activitas went through several design iterations with the St. Sebastian’s project team to maximize the field size and to establish new connections points between other campus elements. Due to the project’s proximity to the Charles River, Activitas also assisted with an extensive permitting process and the design of subsurface stormwater storage chambers under the proposed field.

EXPANDED PORTFOLIO In addition to our secondary institutional experience, Activitas’s expanded portfolio encompasses projects spanning from residential to municipalities to collegiate and professional athletics. Activitas’s discerning and diverse clientele reaffirms our ability to design awarding projects that weaves the natural environment into the client’s mission. We invite you to contact our clients to understand our process and communication skills which are essential to the planning and design process.

TESTIMONIAL “Since the addition of multiple synthetic turf fields throughout Weymouth, not only have we been able to provide superior playing surfaces for our residents, we have also become a destination for athletic events throughout the year. Various user groups have made use of the fields here in Weymouth to host tournaments on nearly every holiday weekend and many club programs now call Weymouth their “home”. During any tournament weekend, it is not uncommon to meet families from throughout New England and from much of the east coast and beyond. One of the great ancillary benefits is the impact that being the “host” has had for the local community. Bringing new people into the area provides a significant boost to many of the local businesses. Hotels, restaurants, coffee shops have all seen a sizeable spike in business due to the influx of new customers to the area – simply by providing new fields. I cannot say enough great things about the positive impact that our new fields have had for Weymouth and Activitas has been a great partner on this journey.”
