Essential Winter Car Checks

Don’t get caught out; make sure your family cars are fit for the winter

Tyre grip is extremely important in winter conditions. While the legal requirement is 1.6mm, even this might not be enough to stop on ice or snow. If they are near 2mm, you should look to replace them for winter. If you are still having problems with stopping, it could be your brakes. If you own any SEAT model, SEAT can replace them starting from â‚Ź100.00.

The cold air can wreck havoc on your car’s engine. Anti freeze will help protect it and keep performance levels up. Find out which anti-freeze your manufacturer recommends (check the handbook). And simply top up using a 50/50 mixture together with water.

As daylight becomes increasingly limited, it’s important to have working headlights. Having only one working headlight will reduce visibility dramatically. Brakes lights are also important in poor visibility to warn drivers behind you.

Your windscreen is also important for visibility too. Check for chips as hot air can turn them into cracks. Also, top up your washer reservoir with water and anti-freeze to clean a dirty windscreen easily.
