Welcome The theme of this year’s Foyle Film Festival is ‘Against the Odds’ as the programme highlights the incredible true stories of ordinary people who have overcome the odds to achieve extraordinary things. The festival launches with the Northern Ireland premiere of A United Kingdom. Set in 1947, it is the inspirational true story of Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), a brilliant African law student in London, and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white English clerical worker from Eltham in south London. The couple meet at a Missionary Society Dance and they fall in love. What he didn’t tell her until later, however, was that he was a Prince and the future King of Bechuanaland. Their relationship coincides with South Africa introducing its apartheid laws to separate blacks and whites. Driving With Selvi is a compelling documentary that tells the story of South India’s first female taxi driver. At 14 years old, Selvi Gowda was a child bride, forcibly married to an abusive husband. Selvi finds the courage to escape and, over a ten-year period, transforms her life by learning to drive and starting her own taxi company. The Innocents is the true story of Mathilde a young French doctor working for the Red Cross taking care of survivors in Poland in late 1945. When a nun appears at the clinic one night looking for help, Mathilde is brought to a convent where she discovers several Benedictine nuns who are about to give birth, after being assaulted by Soviet soldiers.
From Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams, Life, Animated is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. Kate Plays Christine is the unbelievable story of Christine Chubbuck, a real-life news reporter who attempted suicide on live television in 1974, later dying of her wounds in hospital. Foyle Film Festival’s family premiere is the new Disney animated feature Moana in 3D. Other family events include Rock Dog 3D and Paddington and Teddy Bears’ picnic. We close proceedings with the Northern Ireland premiere of The Eagle Huntress – a spellbinding documentary that follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic girl in Mongolia who is fighting to become the first female eagle hunter in 12 generations of her Kazakh family. The film captures her personal journey while also addressing universal themes like female empowerment, the natural world, coming of age and the onset of modernity. Cast member Jessica Oyelowo (Lady Lilly Canning) will introduce this screening. Jessica is an actress and producer, known for Sleepy Hollow (1999), Alice In Wonderland (2010) and Madame Bovary (2000). She has been married to David Oyelowo (A United Kingdom, Queen Of Katwe, Selma, Interstellar) since 1998. UK.2016. Director: Amma Asante. Cast: David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Tom Felton, Laura Carmichael, Jack Davenport, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Charlotte Hope, Jessica Oyelowo, Jack Lowden. Duration: 1hr.51mins. Cert: 12A. Distributor: Pathe A United Kingdom begins in 1947, when Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), a brilliant African law student in London, met Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white English clerical worker from Eltham in south London, at a Missionary Society Dance and they fall in love. What he didn’t tell her until later was that he was a prince and the future king of Bechuanaland modern day Botswana. When he is recalled home to take up his responsibilities and lead his people, he and Ruth plan to marry and return together, despite hostility from both their families to the union. However, the British government intervenes.
6 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2016
The problem for Britain is that South Africa is about to introduce apartheid. Its government sees an interracial relationship in its tiny neighbour as damaging and it threatens to withdraw the gold and uranium it supplies to poverty-stricken postwar Britain. As a result, out of self-interest the British government forbids the marriage and, when that fails to deter the couple, it sanctions Seretse and Ruth Khama in every way it can. But the British establishment has underestimated the strength of their love, and their determination to be together against all the odds.
“Unmissable… a love story for the ages… one of the best films of the year.” Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail “Sensational, uplifting… the most romantic film of the year.” Metro ★★★★★ The Times ★★★★ The Guardian
After party reception will follow the screening in Martha’s Vineyard, Brunswick Moviebowl.

CLOSING NIGHT GALA: THE EAGLE HUNTRESS SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 8.30PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL UK/Mongolia/USA.2016. Director: Otto Bell. Cast: Daisy Ridley, Aisholpan Duration: 1hr.27mins. Cert: TBC. Language: Kazakh with English subtitles. Distributor: Altitude Film Distribution This spellbinding documentary follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic Mongolian girl who is fighting to become the first female eagle hunter in 12 generations of her Kazakh family. Through breathtaking aerial cinematography and intimate verite footage, the film captures her personal journey while also addressing universal themes like female empowerment, the natural world, coming of age and the onset of modernity. At the heart of this story, and what truly resonates with the audience, is a little girl who is standing tall in a man’s world. Her story is one of strength and courage. It is so relevant, sensitively dealing with issues that transcend the cultural differences, and is truly mesmerising on the big screen. Breathtakingly beautiful. “One of the most beautifully shot movies I have ever seen.” Indiewire “An enchanting tale of girl power.” Lost Angeles Times “What Director Otto Bell captures on the screen is unprecedented.” Deadline
“Aisholpan is an inspiration for kids everywhere, happily mixing her eagle ambitions with more familiar concerns, such as nail polish and school work – she plans to be a doctor and, after seeing this, you’re unlikely to bet against it… Educational and entertaining in equal measure, by the end, you’ll be cheering Aisholpan on as her passionate resilience also begins to win over those doubters around her.” Amber Wilkinson, EyeForFilm “The underlying bravery and determination running through every scene of The Eagle Huntress makes it one of the year’s essential documentaries… Aisholpan offers a real-life, profoundly inspiring testament to disregard ageold societal constraints and forge ahead with your passion.” Jordan Raup, The Film Stage “The Eagle Huntress is the rare documentary that makes you interested in a subject you never thought you’d care about. The documentary sends an inspirational message of never giving up for what you believe in, along with not being afraid to change the status quo. With the help of big name executive producers (Morgan Spurlock and Daisy Ridley) backing The Eagle Huntress, hopefully this beautifully shot and uplifting documentary will reach the audience it deserves.” Dustin Jansick, Way Too Indie The Foyle Film Festival Light In Motion (LIM) Awards, sponsored by City Of Derry Crystal, will be announced and presented before the closing night screening of The Eagle Huntress.

THURSDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 6PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
Director: Roger Ross Williams. Cast: Jonathan Freeman, Gilbert Gottfried, Owen Suskind, Ron Suskind. Duration: 1hr.29mins. Cert: PG. Distributor: Dogwoof His imagination unlocked an amazing new world. From Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams, Life, Animated is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This emotional coming-of-age story follows Owen as he graduates to adulthood and takes his first steps toward independence. The subject of his father Ron Suskind’s 10 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2016
New York Times bestseller, Owen was a thriving three year old who, suddenly and inexplicably, went silent – and for years after remained unable to connect with other people or to convey his thoughts, feelings or desires. Over time, through repeated viewings of Disney classics like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, Owen found useful tools to help him to understand complex social cues and to re-connect with the world around him. Life, Animated evocatively interweaves classic Disney sequences with verite scenes from
Owen’s life in order to explore how his identification and empathy for characters like Simba, Jafar and Ariel gave him a means to understand his feelings and allowed him to interpret reality. Owen’s story is a moving testament to the many ways in which stories can serve as a means of persevering through the dark times, leading us all toward the light. “A radiant, uplifting story.” Duane Byrge, The Hollywood Reporter “Deeply moving.” Justin Chang, Variety

France/Poland.2016. Director: Anne Fontaine. Cast: Lou de Laâge, Agata Buzek, Agata Kulesza. Duration: 1hr.55mins. Cert: 12A. Language: French/Polish/Russian with English subtitles. Distributor: Picturehouse Entertainment Mathilde is a young French doctor with the Red Cross on a mission to treat Second World War survivors in Poland in late 1945. When a nun appears at the clinic one night seeking her help, she is brought to a convent where 30 Benedictine nuns live cut off from the world. She discovers that several are due to give birth, having been assaulted by Soviet soldiers. Unable to reconcile their faith with their pregnancy, the nuns turn to Mathilde, who becomes their only hope. Outstandingly directed by Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel, Gemma Bovery), The Innocents is based on a remarkable true story about the crises of faith that emerge when a house of God is ravaged by war.
“With a timely release in a year when Poland is considering outlawing abortion even in cases of rape, The Innocents may well be a historical film but it still has plenty of relevance today… The whole is a poignant yet powerful film made with sensitivity and poise.” Jennie Kermode, EyeForFilm “There’s a constant dramatic tightrope being walked throughout The Innocents, and that constantly ratcheting tension makes for a memorably moving experience.” Andrew Parker, Toronto Film Scene

On one fateful day, Star comes across Jake (Shia Labeouf) and his band of “lost children”. Jake and his group travel cross-country, going door-to-door selling magazine subscriptions, making money, and partying hard. The group is led by the no-nonsense Krystal (Riley Keough) who treats her employees well, as long as they are making money. Jake and Krystal recruit Star, who is more than happy to leave her hard life behind. What follows is a road trip full of wild times, self-reflection and discovery as Star faces the inevitability of adulthood.
“American Honey sees one of Britain’s most exciting filmmakers muscle her way to the vanguard of global cinema… Come the credits, this exhilarating, exhausting movie will leave you spent but ready to hit repeat. It’s the filmic equivalent of the anthemic tunes its characters listen to – immersive, euphoric and utterly addictive, demanding to be played again and again and again… Go along for the ride and this is wind-in-your-hair thrilling.” Jamie Graham, Total Film
“Magnificently realistic, unquestionably hip, truly authentic and full of exceptional performances from its young cast, American Honey is one of the most unique cinema experiences of the year.” Paul Heath, The Hollywood News “In the spirit of foreign filmmakers such as Michelangelo Antonion) and Wim Wenders who brought a rarely seen part of American life to the screen in their own distinctive style...” Alissa Simon, Sight & Sound

between masculinity, sexuality and socio-economic pressures when fame or notoriety is an issue. “It is likely to enter the pantheon of British LGBT classics alongside Beautiful Thing...and My Beautiful Launderette.” Victor Fruga, DMovies.org

UK.2016. Director: Jonathan Blagrove. Cast: John Hurt. Duration: 1hr.30mins. Cert: U Director Jonathan Blagrove will introduce The Final Reel and take part in a post-screening discussion. This feature length documentary, narrated by celebrated actor Sir John Hurt, tells the fascinating and ever changing story of how cinemas have developed from the travelling showmen to the present day. For many people their local cinema is one of their favourite places in the world, their spiritual home, and their last community space. The Final Reel is a film that celebrates the local cinema
– past and present – and our timeless obsession with the buildings, films, film stars and the people that spend their lives in thrall of them. Featuring a mix of actuality, interviews and archive material, The Final Reel offers an entertaining overview of the history of cinema going in Norfolk and a snapshot of cinema going in England today. We will meet some of the colourful characters that are a key part of this history and hear how they kept the audiences coming back. It also asks the question – is this the final reel for the cinema or just another chapter in its ongoing story?
This is the story of Ruth Donnelly, a detective Garda who had a very bright career ahead of her until she had a one night stand with a colleague at Christmas while she was pregnant with her first child. Her guilt made her admit her indiscretion and as a consequence of the stress, she lost the baby. Her husband never got over the loss of his child and took his own life at their home, where she still lives. Having lost everything she loved, Ruth is still trying to seek out help but is coming to realise that there is only one course of action that may placate her conscience. “Studies of depression and suicidal thoughts may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when they are well-written, and superbly performed they can be a worthwhile experience. DRIVING WITH SELVI
NI PREMIERE
SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 2PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
Canada.2015. Director: Elisa Paloschi. Cast: Selvi Gowda. Duration: 1hr.14mins. Cert: U. Language: Indian with English subtitles Elisa Paloschi’s compelling documentary tells the story of Selvi, South India’s first female taxi driver. At aged 14 she was a child bride, forcibly married to an abusive husband. Luckily she escaped and found her way to the nurturing Odanadi organisation that housed her and supported her ambition to drive. We first meet 18-year-old Selvi at a girls’ shelter in 2004 – timid, soft-spoken, a fresh runaway from a difficult life. Over a ten-year journey, we see a remarkable transformation as Selvi finds her voice and defies all expectations – learning to drive, starting her own taxi company, leading seminars to educate other women, and much more. 18 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2016
This character-driven story highlights the challenges that millions of devalued women and girls in India face. In a society where women are often considered expendable or worthless, Selvi refuses to accept this estimation for herself, moving beyond the pain she’s experienced to create an entirely new life. “Paloschi’s film unsettles and inspires.” Philip Kemp, Total Film “Films should show us the wonder of human life, and Driving With Selvi certainly manages this.” Sian Brett, One Room With A View
“This is a story that can spark change in someone’s life.” Zainab Salbi, Founder, Women for Women International “A powerful story and one of the most inspirational films. At the core of the story is an issue that is all to prevalent in countries around the world, and that’s gender-based violence…ultimately Selvi’s story is about hope and resilience.” John Beed, U.S. Mission Director for India, USAID
KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 4PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL USA.2015. Director: Robert Greene. Cast: Kate Lyn Sheil, Steven C. Bovio, Christine Chubbuck, Stephanie Coatney. Duration: 1hr.15mins. Cert: 15. Distributor: Dogwoof Actress Kate Lyn Sheil meticulously prepares to portray the role of Christine Chubbuck, a real-life news reporter who attempted suicide on live television in 1974, later dying of her wounds in hospital. Four decades on, no footage of the incident exists in the public domain, being that it happened a few years before the advent of VCRs. It’s almost an urban legend, making it particularly difficult for Sheil to immerse herself in the world of this mysterious woman. And then the question arises of the actual value of trying to make drama out of this depressed victim of tragedy – the moral complications and issues of accountability and empathy that arise. Weaving between Sheil’s research processes, a retracing of Chubbuck’s known steps, and deliberately sterile, speculative re-enactments of events leading up to the suicide, the cumulative effect of Greene’s film is a thoroughly unsettling experience. It’s fascinating in its acknowledgement of the inability to know someone’s inner world, let alone convey it with any degree of supposed truth. “Reminiscent of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood and Bob Fosse’s Star 80…” Chuck Brown, Slant Magazine “Greene and Sheil have fashioned a more holistic and sympathetic portrait of Chubbuck than any straight fiction could ever hope to.” Jordan Cronk, Sight & Sound

BEING FOREST WHITAKER: A CELEBRATION OF A SCREEN LEGEND Forest Whitaker is arguably the greatest black character actor of his generation. While he has taken leading roles in major studio films such as Platoon, Panic Room and Taken 3, the independent movie scene is where Forest Whitaker has truly made his mark. His enigmatic persona has brought depth and mystery to a range of character roles from the dreamy soldier Jody hiding a secret in The Crying Game, to the silent ninja-like assassin in Jim Jarmusch’s off-beat comedy Ghost Dog. In this quiet, soft-spoken actor’s brooding screen presence, emotion is often kept just beneath the surface, hinting at hidden depths. When it bursts out and reveals itself, as it does in The Last King of Scotland, Whitaker exudes a menace, charisma and frightening intensity that matches Brando’s Colonel Kurtz. While the actor won a Golden Globe for his breakthrough performance as Charlie Parker in Bird, it is perhaps fitting that it was in a British independent movie that Forest Whitaker achieved the ultimate accolade, winning the Oscar®, BAFTA and Golden Globe for his mesmerising performance.

A rare opportunity to see Michael Mann’s biopic of Muhammed Ali’s life, in which Will Smith and John Voight turn in Oscar®-nominated performances.
The life and career of Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) as seen chronologically in archival footage – Ali as a fighter, a personality, a political lightning rod, and a man. Boxers who fought him describe what led up to major fights and the matches themselves; they also offer personal revelations about their own lives: George Chuvalo’s family losses, George Foreman’s conversion, Ken Norton’s gratitude, Ron Lyle’s teaching, Earnie Shaver’s encounter with the Klan, and Joe Frazier’s good humour pack their own punch. The fighters talk about Ali’s quickness, cunning and recuperative powers – and how fighting him changed their lives.
The panel discussion will be followed by the chance to sit back, relax and enjoy the Oscar®-winning film When We Were Kings in which a who’s who of American cultural life reflect on the behind the scenes story of Ali’s iconic 1974 fight with George Foreman – the Rumble in the Jungle.
The biopic chronicles ten years in the life of Cassius Clay, from 1964, when he took the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston, to 1974 and the Rumble In The Jungle with George Forman.
