WELCOME

Welcome to the Foyle Film Festival – yes it is THAT time of year again. But this is an extra special time for the festival as it celebrates its 30th year. The programme has increased to 10 days in order to celebrate this milestone birthday in style with a jam-packed programme of screenings and special guest events. The festival launches with the Northern Ireland Premiere of Battle Of The Sexes – the true story of the famous tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex–men’s champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). The event became one of the most popular televised sports events of all time. The Closing Night film is The Man Who Invented Christmas and recounts how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) created Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim and other classic characters from A Christmas Carol. Other highlights include the Shorts To Features Conference with special guest Jim Sheridan in conversation about his long and distinguished career. Jim Sheridan will also introduce a special screening of My Left Foot in Brunswick Moviebowl. The cult movie Withnail And I shares Foyle Film Festival’s 30th birthday celebrations this year, and the festival programme includes a special screening with Richard E. Grant in attendance to talk about this hilarious classic and his career in the film industry. The festival pays tribute to the late Sam Shepard with a screening of Days Of Heaven. In a special event following the screening, Stephen Rea and Judith Roddy will read from the short stories of Sam Shepard. As usual the festival champions local film with a special screening in the Guildhall of In The Name Of Peace: John Hume In America. The film examines John Hume’s key role in the peace process, and includes interviews with former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as well as personal accounts from Bono, Bertie Ahern and Enda Kenny. The festival’s family movie this year is The Star – a magical seasonal animation about a brave donkey named Bo and his friends who become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas. The festival takes place across three main venues – Nerve Centre, Brunswick Moviebowl, and the Guildhall with over 100 feature films, Light In Motion (LIM) Competition short films, and educational screenings, taking place over ten days. FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL: HOW IT ALL STARTED OPENING LECTURE: BY PROFESSOR MARTIN MCLOONE,

PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH ULSTER UNIVERSITY FRIDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 5PM NERVE CENTRE

We begin our 30th anniversary celebrations with a special event to honour the individuals and organisations responsible for founding the Foyle Film Festival, one of the highlight events in the city’s cultural calendar. Professor Martin McLoone from Ulster University, a founding member of the Foyle Film Festival, will explore the origins of the festival in Derry and the role it played in promoting cinema culture and the film industry in Northern Ireland in the late 1980s. Foyle Film Festival was founded in 1987 by academics from Ulster University’s Media Studies Department, local filmmakers, community–based video organisations such as Derry Film, Video Collective and Northland Films and individuals prominent within the city’s art and cultural scene such as Declan McGonagle, Director of the Orchard Gallery. 6 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2017

In his lecture, Martin will consider key themes such as the festival’s relationship with the local film sector of the 1980s and the efforts to establish a film industry; the festival’s role in providing a platform for new Irish cinema; and the emergence of an international Irish cinema with Neil Jordan’s Angel (1982) and Jim Sheridan’s My Left Foot (1989).

The FREE lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.

OPENING NIGHT GALA: BATTLE OF THE SEXES FRIDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 8PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL

UK/USA 2017 DIRECTORS: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris CAST: Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Elisabeth Shue, Jessica McNamee, Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming DURATION: 2hrs 1min CERT: 12A DISTRIBUTOR: 20TH Century Fox In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into top gear, off the court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality,

but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. While Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions around the world. Co-produced by Danny Boyle.

“Stone has never been better…”

SASHA STONE, THE WRAP “Billie Jean King’s showdown stunt fixture against retired men’s champion Bobby Riggs is played for more than just laughs in this smart, feminist comedy... Contrives to say a fair amount about gender discrimination and homophobia in the guise of a feel-good comedy.”

Some high drama, a glimpse into a significant portion of history and a hopeful message for the season. …upon leaving the theater, there should be no humbugs, and all should be saying, ‘God bless us, everyone.’”

MARKING THE CENTENARY OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

FILM AND THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION: LECTURE BY IAN CHRISTIE

TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER @ 7.30PM NERVE CENTRE

The Russian Revolution of October 1917 triggered an explosion of innovation and experimentation in the arts, including the new artform of the moving image. The Bolshevik leaders viewed the cinema as a powerful tool of education and instruction for the Russian people, the majority of whom were illiterate. During the Russian Civil War (1919-1921) special trains were sent out into the countryside to show short propaganda films about the revolution. In the 1920s a visionary group of Russian filmmakers that included Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, Vsevolod Pudovkin and Alexander Dovzhenko developed a new approach to cinematic storytelling. Based on the principle that editing is the foundation of film art, Soviet Montage is one of the most significant aesthetic movements in the history of cinema.

OCTOBER

TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER @ 8.30PM NERVE CENTRE

Soviet Union 1928 DIRECTORS: Sergei Eisenstein, Grigori Aleksandrov CAST: Nikolay Popov, Vasili Nikandrov, Layaschenko DURATION: 1hr 43mins CERT: 15 Silent A special screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s epic recreation of the events that led to the storming of the Winter Palace in October 1917. October was only his third feature film, yet Eisenstein had already distinguished himself as a master among Russian montage filmmakers. Eisenstein declared that editing was the soul of cinema, arguing that the juxtaposition of shots – not the shots themselves – gave moving images their meaning, and that actors were props used to serve that meaning. As Shira Kizirian writes: “in October Eisenstein eschews traditional protagonists, further developing what he called the “mass-epical” – in which the masses rather than an individual hero drive events. For a time, the star-driven Hollywood film had a significant rival. The proletariat was ready for its close-up.”

Professor Ian Christie, author of two books on Eisenstein, will discuss how the revolution inspired new ways of thinking about cinema that still influence film culture today.

UK/Germany/China 2016 DIRECTOR: Eran Creevy CAST: Nicholas Hoult, Felicity Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Ben Kingsley DURATION: 1hr 39mins CERT: PG-13 DISTRIBUTOR: Entertainment One Collide offers an opportunity to watch Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley go toe to toe in a scene seemingly fashioned on the famous diner scene from Michael Mann’s Heat. Kingsley plays a loopy, drugged-up crime boss who’s fond of silk pyjamas and scantily-clad models, while Hopkins plays the sort of preening, imperious baddie who quotes poetry and muses philosophically while detailing his henchman’s torture techniques.

Caught between the two is an American expat, Casey Stein (Nicholas Hoult), who sees himself pulled back into the criminal lifestyle he agreed to leave behind for his girlfriend, Juliette (Felicity Jones), after she requires an expensive lifesaving kidney transplant. “A terrifically entertaining movie that succeeds in its mission to deliver exciting chase scenes at a breathless pace.”

Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown, Michael Elphick DURATION: 1hr 47mins CERT: 15 DISTRIBUTOR: Arrow Films Introduction and post-screening discussion with Richard E. Grant. Based on the life of its writer/director Bruce Robinson, Withnail And I is set in London in 1969 with two out-of-work actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann), fed up with damp, cold, piles of washing-up, mad drug dealers and psychotic Irishmen, decide to leave their squalid Camden flat for an idyllic holiday in the countryside,

courtesy of Withnail's uncle Monty's country cottage. But when they get there, it rains non-stop, there's no food, and their basic survival skills turn out to be somewhat limited. Matters are not helped by the arrival of Uncle Monty, who shows an uncomfortably keen interest in Marwood. Robinson's Withnail and I is an enduring British cult film. Enthusiasts call out the iconic phrases from the endlessly brilliant script to one another like mating calls: "Scrubbers!"

IN CONVERSATION: RICHARD E. GRANT Richard E. Grant made his film debut in Bruce Robinson’s classic British comedy Withnail And I and the rest, as they say, is history. He is multi-talented; an actor, writer, director, raconteur, and not to mention, a successful entrepreneur after the launch of his award-winning perfume Jack in 2014. With a hint of marijuana tones, the media immediately labelled it ‘pot perfume’ in reference to Grant’s role as drug-taking Withnail in the iconic movie.

and "We want the finest wines known to humanity and we want them now!" Withnail and I is movie magic, enhanced by an aimless but appallingly eventful plot. Popular among students, it strikes a chord with anyone who has undergone a period of debauchery and impoverished squalor prior to finding their way onto life's straight and narrow.

His talent and versatility has enabled Grant to have a long, distinguished and varied career achieving recognition in both Hollywood blockbusters and smaller independent films with titles including L.A. Story, The Age Of Innocence, Bright Young Things, Gosford Park, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Penelope. More recently he played Dr Zander Rice in Marvel’s critically acclaimed film, Logan and will soon be seen in Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and alongside Melissa McCarthy in the Fox Searchlight feature, Can You Ever Forgive Me. REMEMBERING SAM SHEPHERD SUNDAY 19 NOVEMBER @ 2PM NERVE CENTRE

Foyle Film Festival will pay tribute to the late Sam Shepard whose untimely death in late July caused great sadness in the worlds of theatre and cinema. The iconic actor, playwright and director left behind a unique 50 year legacy of classic American plays and memorable performances in movies such as Frances, Country, Fool for Love, Voyager, Mud, Black Hawk Down and The Right Stuff, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

30 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2017

In the autumn of 2013 as part of the City of Culture, Sam Shepard spent five weeks in Derry getting to know the city and attending rehearsals for the Field Day Theatre Company’s production of his new play, A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations), which was premiered at The Playhouse. Foyle Film Festival celebrated Sam’s residency in Derry with a screening of Paris, Texas, the haunting film that he co-wrote for Wim Wenders. Sam took part in a post-screening public interview with the playwright, Clare Dwyer-Hogg.

DAYS OF HEAVEN USA 1978 DIRECTOR: Terrence Malick CAST: Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, Linda Manz DURATION: 1hr 34mins CERT: PG DISTRIBUTOR: Paramount Pictures SOURCE: Filmbank A special screening of Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven, in which Sam Shepard made his screen debut. This 1978 film is justly celebrated for its painterly images of rural landscapes and the evocative musical score by Ennio Morricone. A Greek tragedy plays out in the wheat fields of Texas with Sam Shepard in the role of the farmer, a brooding, enigmatic figure who remains a mystery throughout. Won an Oscar® “Days Of Heaven is above all one of the most beautiful films ever made. Malick’s purpose is not to tell a story of melodrama, but one of loss… He evokes the loneliness and beauty of the limitless Texas prairie.”

ROGER EBERT, ROGEREBERT.COM

STEPHEN REA AND JUDITH RODDY READ THE SHORT STORIES OF SAM SHEPARD Sam Shepard and Stephen Rea were lifelong friends, working together since the early ‘70s, when Stephen played the role of Cody in Sam’s experimental play, Geography of a Horse Dreamer. Sam wrote several plays for Stephen that were premiered at the Abbey Theatre including the one-man tour-de-force, Kicking A Dead Horse in 2007. The two friends appeared on screen together in the western Blackthorn (2011) in which Sam played an aged and grizzled Butch Cassidy, hiding out in Bolivia, pursued by his nemesis, a Pinkerton detective played by Stephen. What was to be their final collaboration came during Derry’s year as City of Culture. Stephen approached Sam to write a new play to be premiered at the Playhouse, which would then travel to New York. A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations) with Stephen Rea in the lead role of Oedipus was one of the triumphs of the City of Culture year. The two friends reunited exactly one year later in November 2014 for the off-Broadway premiere of A Particle of Dread at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box theatre in New York. As well as being one of the 20th century’s greatest dramatists, Sam Shepard was a brilliant chronicler of the tragicomic and the surreal in his short story collections, Hawk Moon, Motel Chronicles, Cruising Paradise, Great Dream of Heaven and Day out of Days.

NERVE CENTRE – FREE ADMISSION THE DIGGER 2015 DIRECTOR: Ali Cherri DURATION: 24mins LANGUAGE: Arabic and Pashto with English subtitles PRODUCED BY: Sharjah Art Foundation For 20 years, Sultan Zeib Khan has kept watch over a ruined Neolithic necropolis in the Sharjah desert in the United Arab Emirates. Although majestic, the wide-angle shots have no monumentalising intent: the beauty and extent of the site speak for themselves. What is playing out here is the possibility for one man to become part of a landscape that overwhelms him yet seems to need his help. Seen under the silhouette of a rock about to devour him or as a dwarfed gure spade in hand walking from the back of the frame, Sultan curiously busies himself from day to day to prevent the ruins... from falling into ruin.

“Endlessly quotable, strangely fascinating and immensely charming.”

A FILM MUSIC JOURNEY WITH THE ULSTER STRING QUARTET, GUEST VOCALIST REBEKAH COFFEY AND TIM BURDEN SATURDAY 25 NOVEMBER @ 8PM

Even before films had sound, music was an integral part to the enjoyment of a film. Cinemas had massive organs installed and the performer would follow the action on screen with appropriate musical accents. Things have changed a little, but we take you back to those intimate days of film presentation. This live music event sees a chronological journey through the history of film with excerpts from Hollywood's Golden Age classics such as Now Voyager, The Wizard Of Oz; Wild West classics such as The Magnificent Seven, The Big Country; to modern greats like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. The Music Is Bond – James Bond, includes classics such as Nobody Does It Better, All Time High and Skyfall. While Disney Delights includes unforgettable music from Toy Story, Beauty And The Beast, Up and Inside Out. This extraordinary music extravaganza features special arrangements performed by the Ulster String Quartet with guest soloist and vocalist Rebekah Coffey, and hosted by film music professional Tim Burden. Refreshments and food included in the ticket price of £8. Venue Bar will also be open during the event.
