FRIDAY 16–SUNDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2018 WWW.FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL.ORG
VOICES: The 31st Foyle Film Festival marks a number of important milestones with special screenings and events that, in one way or another, give voice to significant world events. 100 years of women’s suffrage is acknowledged by placing women’s voices at front and centre of this year’s programme – with Keira Knightley headlining the opening night film Colette about a young woman extracating herself from her domineering husband to carve out her own path in life. In The Wife, the brilliant Glenn Close plays a devoted wife who eventually finds her voice after forty years of marriage to an unfaithful husband. For decades Yayoi Kusama’s work pushed boundaries. She was an underdog with everything stacked against her – the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was a particular shame. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork that is inspiring. Bad Reputation chronicles the life of Joan Jett, from her early teenage years as founding member of The Runaways to her enduring presence over four decades later as a Rock ‘n’ Roll icon. While Maggie Gyllenhaal closes the festival with The Kindergarten Teacher – a role that many have heralded possibly the finest performance of her career.
Special guest, acclaimed actress and political activist, Vanessa Redgrave brings her documentary Sea Sorrow to this year’s festival giving voice to present and past refugees in Europe,as she recalls her own childhood experiences as an evacuee during WWII. We’re also delighted to host a special weekend programme as part of Anim18, exploring the history of animation in Northern Ireland and introducing audiences to the often unsung local pioneers of the artform. The programme responds to the events in Northern Ireland from 1959 to 1974 highlighted in Nerve Visual’s latest exhibition, Speeches, Strikes and Struggles: Curating Conflict, led by the Tower Museum. It offers the chance for the public to view rarely before seen collections. Robert Redford’s retirement from the big screen is marked with a special screening of the film that launched his career as a major movie star, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, and his latest that also heralds his retirement from the big screen, The Old Man And The Gun. On a lighter note, Disney returns to the festival with a special preview screening of Ralph Breaks The Internet. Bernie McLaughlin, Foyle Film Festival Director/Programmer

OPENING NIGHT GALA:
COLETTE FRIDAY 16 NOVEMBER @ 8.30PM
“Not just the story of one woman’s coming into her own, but also a blueprint for how to do so when just about all the social, cultural, and legal forces in your world are stacked against you… Conveys a strong feminist message…” SARAH BOSLAUGH, THEARTSSTL “Westmoreland’s Paris is scrumptiously decadent – and seedy – as Colette navigates the city’s eclectic, gossipy social scene.” JOHNNY OLEKSINSKI, NEW YORK POST
BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
Based on the true-life story of French novelist and feminist icon Colette, née Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, and starring Keira Knightley in the central role. When she marries a successful Parisian writer known commonly as ‘Willy’ (Dominic West), Colette is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendour of Paris. When Willy persuades Colette to ghostwrite for him, she pens a semi-autobiographical novel creating the brazen country girl named Claudine, which becomes a bestseller and a cultural sensation.
Following the novel’s success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionising literature, fashion and sexual expression. WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 12PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
A LITTLE KINDNESS MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE For over 30 years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer, was beamed daily into homes across America in his popular television programme, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? takes an intimate look at Fred Rogers, a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination. There had never been anything like Mister Rogers on television before or since. However, that beloved personality also hid Rogers’ deep self-doubts about himself and occasional misjudgments even as he proved a rock of understanding in times of tragedy for a world that did not always comprehend a man of such noble character.

THE EYES OF ORSON WELLES SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 1PM NERVE CENTRE
Orson Welles, is widely recognised as one of the greatest filmmakers of all times, with his 1941 debut Citizen Kane consistently voted the greatest movie of all time. Director Mark Cousins provides a new insight into the life of the legendary filmmaker with a collection of Welles’s unseen sketches, drawings and paintings. The Eyes Of Orson Welles takes the audience behind the famous façade providing a fascinating glimpse into Welles’ Wisconsin childhood, youthful foreign travels, 1930’s activism, championing of African-American theatre and love life. Welles’ views on politics, race, power and its abuse are as resonant now as they’ve ever been.
“‘Who were you?’ asks Cousins at the outset. This wonderful portrait offers some fascinating answers.” JEREMY ASPINALL, RADIO TIMES “Here Cousins’ canvas is the screen itself, but upon it we see not only other canvases, museum walls bearing them, films projected upon them. Herein advanced is a relatively robust and useful critical lens, one that holds attention. The Eyes Of Orson Welles deserves to be met with your own.” ★★★★ ANDREW ROBERTSON, EYEFORFILM

“The Happy Prince…finds a firm anchor in Everett’s performance… A rivalry of old boyfriends, between cherubic terror Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Colin Morgan) and sober-minded literary executor Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), pits head versus heart… charting the possible paths Wilde could take as he starts life anew as ‘Sebastian Melmoth’.” MICHAEL LEADER, SIGHT & SOUND “Rupert Everett is an exceptional Oscar Wilde in his own directorial debut.” FIONNUALA HALLIGAN, SCREEN DAILY “A powerful parable of passion and redemption.” ★★★★ PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN
THE HAPPY PRINCE SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER @ 7PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
In a dilapidated hotel room in Paris, Oscar Wilde lies on his deathbed. The past comes cascading back, taking him on a poignant journey through his past to other times and places. From the time he was the toast of London society to his downfall when he was crucified by a public that once adored him. The Happy Prince is particularly strong on the horrifying homophobic prejudice that Wilde suffered during his downfall – notably in the heart-breaking sight of Wilde the convict being spat at on a station platform while on the way to jail. This is a portrait of the dark side of a genius who lived and died for love. Rupert Everett writes, directs and assumes the role of Oscar Wilde in his final years following his release from Reading Gaol. However, The Happy Prince could be viewed as much as a career-defining project for Everett, and a fitting culmination of a lifetime interest in Wilde – from leading An Ideal Husband and The Importance Of Being Earnest on the big screen to portraying Wilde in the revival of David Hare’s ‘The Judas Kiss’ in the West End in 2012. The Happy Prince showcases Rupert Everett at his very best.

POSTCARDS FROM LONDON MONDAY 19 NOVEMBER @ 9PM BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL
Postcards From London is set in a vibrant, neon-lit, imaginary vision of Soho, this morality tale manages to be both a beautifully shot homage in the spirit of Derek Jarman and a celebration of the homo-erotic in Baroque art. With a script that keeps you in thrall to Jim’s journey, Postcards from London illuminates the potency of high art in queer history. Beautiful Essex boy Jim (British rising star Harris Dickinson) who, having travelled from the suburbs, finds himself in Soho searching for fame, fortune and cultural stimulation. Down on his luck, he meets with a gang of unusual high-class male escorts, The Raconteurs, who specialise in postcoital conversation. What follows is Jim’s comic descent from unsuccessful escort, to artist’s muse and art authenticator – a journey complicated by a rare psychosomatic condition called ‘Stendhal Syndrome’. Rendering him painfully over sensitive to art, the condition threatens to bring about his downfall whilst opening him up to new opportunities – but is Jim willing to grab them?

HELLO WORLD I’M YOUR WILD GIRL Bad Reputation chronicles the life of Joan Jett, from her early teenage years as founding member of The Runaways to her enduring presence over four decades later as a Rock ‘n’ Roll icon. Following the break-up of The Runaways, Jett met songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna, and formed Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. But Thomas’s home is under threat from the American multinational corporation Intel who want his property to build a manufacturing facility. Thomas rejects all approaches to sell his farm but finds his world in turmoil as higher forces conspire to remove him from his own land. The story of a young rodeo cowboy of Sioux descent who’s been sidelined by an injury after falling off his horse. Warned it could be fatal if he rides again, Brady (played by real-life rodeo star Brady Jandreau, whose own life and career-ending injury inspired the film) struggles with the idea of a future devoid of the one activity that gives him meaning. Working with a cast of non professionals who play themselves – this includes Brady’s autistic sister and his paraplegic best friend and fellow rodeo casualty, Lane Scott – and are often re-enacting events from their own lives, Zhao achieves a lovely balance between unflinching realism and the hauntingly lyrical. The two lovable outlaws Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) rob trains and banks all over the American West until the law starts catching up with them. To avoid jail they flee to South America where they continue to rob banks. However, Pinkerton detectives (early incarnation of bounty hunter) are now closing in…
The legendary Robert Redford, in what is apparently his acting swan song, plays Forrest Tucker, a career criminal who has spent his life in and out of prison. Tucker relies more on his charm than the gun in his pocket, a technique that has served him very well for many years. After his latest bank job, he stops to help a woman called Jewel (Sissy Spacek) whose vehicle has broken down on the side of the freeway. But this is not a completely altruistic act on Forrest’s part as he is trying to shake the cops who are on his trail.

CALAIS CHILDREN: A CASE TO ANSWER FRIDAY 23 NOVEMBER @ 8PM NERVE CENTRE
FILMMAKER AND ACTIVIST SUE CLAYTON WILL INTRODUCE THE FILM AND TAKE PART IN A POST-SCREENING DISCUSSION As the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp was set to be dismantled in October 2016, there were over 1,900 unaccompanied minors stranded there – many of whom had a legal case to enter the UK. Sue tried to get these children recognised and their cases heard. But with the camp soon to go up in flames, could they be rescued in time? What happened to them next is a shameful indictment of the UK’s human rights record, as the young people suffered delays, denials and dismissal from the UK government,
and were finally left abandoned in France with no support at all. Several have since died, others have been injured, trafficked and abused, or simply disappeared. Sue and her legal team responded by suing the Home Office in the High Court for their failure to adhere to the law on this issue and this film was the primary evidence. A unique example of filmmaking in action to challenge the government and its ‘hostile environment’ policy.
UK 2017 DIRECTOR: Sue Clayton DURATION: 1hr 2mins
CLOSE-UP ON SUE CLAYTON: Sue Clayton has been producing and directing films for over 30 years. Her debut feature film The Song Of The Shirt on women in the garment trades was distributed globally. She made a number of award-winning documentaries for UK Channel 4 and Central Television including the Commodities series, Turning Japanese, How To Survive Lifestyle and Theme Park Britons. She then went into writing and
directing fiction with films like Heart Songs, The Last Crop and The Disappearance Of Finbar starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, which was distributed by Buena Vista International. All her films have won international awards. Sue made an earlier film concentrating on displaced people, Hamedullah:The Road Home, where she gave a camera to a refugee boy forcibly removed to Afghanistan from the UK when he reached 18.
The film was distributed internationally and was submitted to the Select Committee on Child Refugees and Asylum Seekers in 2013. It has also been requested regularly as evidence in court cases appealing the forced removal of turned-18s from the UK. Sir Peter Sutherland, who has been advising the UN General Secretary on international refugee protection, explains simply and forcefully why European governments must not break the conventions on asylum for refugees. CLOSE-UP ON VANESSA REDGRAVE: Called ‘the greatest actress of our time’ by Tennessee Williams, Vanessa Redgrave is an acclaimed actress of stage and screen. Vanessa made her professional debut in the play A Touch of the Sun (1957). In the late 1960s and early ‘70s, Redgrave showed her mastery of both classical and commercial fare, winning an Oscar® and getting nominated for two more, and more followed. In the late 1960s, Redgrave took on a number of iconic roles. She played Anne Boleyn, the doomed wife of King Henry VIII, in 1966’s A Man for All Seasons, as well as another famous English royal, Guenevere, opposite Richard Harris’s King Arthur in 1967’s Camelot. Moving on to more contemporary material, she starred in Isadora (1968), a biopic of the famed modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan. Redgrave lent a certain gravitas and regality to the title role of 1971’s Mary Queen of Scots. But it was her performance in 1977’s Julia that brought her Oscar® gold. Redgrave earned an Academy® Award nomination for her supporting role in James Ivory’s Howards End starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. While in 1997, Redgrave brought to life another literary character, playing the title role in Mrs. Dalloway, based on the Virginia Woolf work. Now in her eighties, Redgrave continues to work steadily. She appeared in Coriolanus (2011) with Ralph Fiennes as his mother in this Shakespearean film adaptation. That same year, Redgrave lent her distinctively stately voice to the animated movie Cars 2. Sea Sorrow is Vanessa Redgrave’s directorial debut.

These insights into the creative process of the local animation industry will set the scene for our Northern Irish animation retrospective. From small beginnings, animation in Northern Ireland has steadily grown to its current share of 15% of the UK animation market. Talented animators such as Joel Simon, John McCloskey, Corrina Askin, Stephen McCollum and Glen Marshall began creating very personal works of animation in the 1990s before moving on to develop animation for broadcast television, in serial or short film formats. Many of their early works experimented with the medium in imaginative ways and found humour in the strangest of places. These lone pioneers of Northern Irish animation have since been joined by a new generation of animators, directors, producers and screenwriters working in local companies Sixteen South, Jam Media, Dog Ears and Paper Owl. Animation is now a vibrant industry bringing local stories, images and accents to a global audience. Our Northern Irish animation retrospective will feature two hours of ground-breaking animation, including Joel Simon’s Macropolis (winner of 16 international awards) and IFTA winner Horn Please OK; Corrina Askin’s The Big Picture, produced under by the Irish Film Board’s Frameworks scheme; Glen Marshall’s film for Peter Gabriel, The Nest That Sailed the Sky, winner of the Prix Ars Electronica; Stephen McCollum’s Pulling the Devil by the Tail winner of the best short film at the Cork film festival; and John McCloskey’s The Crumblegiant, nominated for a BAFTA in 2008.

WRITER-PRODUCER AND VETERAN JOURNALIST ED MOLONEY WILL INTRODUCE THE FILM AND TAKE PART IN A POST-SCREENING DISCUSSION Here is a hypnotic, troubling study of a key agent in the Troubles. Maurice Sweeney’s picture, constructed around a lengthy interview between veteran journalist Ed Moloney and the late IRA volunteer Dolours Price, confirms the subject as a fiercely articulate woman with a chilling certainty of purpose. I, Dolours does more. In charting Price’s journey from civil rights activist to convicted bomber to peace process sceptic, it offers an efficient history of the entire conflict.
This is among the most impressive interviews ever immortalised in a feature documentary. The story of her childhood nursing an aunt wounded handling explosives – blind and without hands – is chilling enough to demand attention. A sentimental part of the brain wonders what this icily intelligent woman could have achieved in different circumstances.
Price was actually on the 1969 People’s Democracy march that notoriously ended at Burntollet Bridge with loyalists attacking while security forces refused to intervene. Like many others in the movement, she sees that as the turning point. “I’m never going to convince these people,” she remembers thinking. ODD FUNNY FACE THE COUPLE SATURDAY 24 NOVEMBER @ 11AM NERVE CENTRE
Paris, the City of Light, shines even brighter when Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire team up for the only time and bring their luminous star power to this exquisite musical featuring songs by George and Ira Gershwin. In the role of a bookstore clerk transformed into a modelling sensation, Hepburn showcases her singing and dancing skills performing “How long has this been going on?” Astaire, as the fashion photographer who discovers her, conjures up his inimitable magic for sequences that include “Let’s Kiss And Make Up”, and a heavenly dance with Hepburn to “He Loves And She Loves” and, again with Hepburn, the title-tune, “I Love Your Funny Face”. Now and forever, so do we.

This isn’t just for leftover Bernstein groupies; it’s a fascinating record of a great composer/conductor‚ and a valuable reminder‚ if needed‚ that opera singers can find more in musicals than a sort of Elephant’s Graveyard.” GRAMOPHONE.CO.UK

A DOCUMENTARY EXPLORING THE ADDICTIONS AND DEATHS OF ROCK MUSICIANS WHO ALL DIED AT THE AGE OF 27 Followed by a legend’s 27 disco with music by iconic stars who died far too young… Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment, but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a “27 Club” began to catch on in public perception. And this was resurrected by the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011. Through interviews with people who knew the tragic stars, such as musicians, critics, doctors and unseen footage, the lives, music and artistry of those who died at 27 are investigated in an attempt to find some answers. UK 2017 DIRECTOR: Simon Napier-Bell CAST: Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie DURATION: 1hr 10mins CERT: 15 DISTRIBUTOR: BULLDOG FILM DISTRIBUTION
