Fáilte
Welcome
Fáilte go dtí Féile An Droichead 2013.
Welcome to Féile An Droichead 2013.
Seo linn arís ag ceiliúradh na Gaeilge, na n-Ealaíon agus na hóige leis an Fhéile chultúrtha phobail seo, atá ina bhuaicphointe de bhliain imeachtaí An Droichead.
We’re gearing up once again to celebrate the Irish language, Arts and youth with this community cultural festival which is always the highpoint of An Droichead’s year of events.
Tá An Droichead fíor-bhródúil mar an t-aon eagraíocht Ghaeilge i nDeisceart nó in Oirthear Bhéal Feirste atá tiomnaithe do sholáthar seirbhísí, siamsaíocht agus oideachas Gaeilge don phobal. Leis an chomhchruinniú is mó de Ghaeilgeoirí in Ultaibh taobh amuigh den Ghaeltacht ar leac a’ dorais againn sa Bharda Botanic, is cinnte go bhfuil an iomad deiseanna forbartha tionscnamh ann d’eagraíocht mar seo; tionscnaimh a spreagfaidh suim i measc lear mór daoine ó chúlraí éagsúla.
An Droichead are proud to be the only organisation in South and East Belfast dedicated to providing Irish language services, entertainment and education to the community. With the highest concentration of Irish speakers in Ulster outside of the Gaeltacht right on our doorstep in the Botanic Ward, there is huge potential for an organisation like this to develop initiatives that appeal to a large and diverse audience. This year we are also proudly celebrating the fact that we are no longer entirely alone, with the East Belfast Mission’s fantastic project, ‘Turas’, growing at a phenomenal rate, with our support.
Cúis mhór bhróid agus cheiliúrtha í fosta i mbliana nach bhfuil muid go hiomlán inár n-aonar níos mó, agus tionscadal iontach Mhisean Bhéal Feirste Thoir – ‘Turas’ – ag fás as cuimse ar Bhóthar Bhaile Nua na hArda lenár gcuidiú. Léiriú den dul chun cinn atá déanta idir an dá ghrúpa go bhfuil dianchúrsa na Féile, agus foghlaimeoirí An Droichead, ‘ag bogadh tí’ go sealadach chuig ceanncheathrú s’acu i Skainos don chlár seo. I ndiaidh dúinn duais a bhaint le chéile i gcomórtas Ghlór na nGael i mbliana, agus – níos tábhachtaí fós – i ndiaidh do Turas ranganna a bhuanú le cúpla bliain anuas a bhfuil níos mó ná céad dalta iontu, dar linn go bhfuil todhchaí gheal ann don dá ghrúpa, don dá phobal, agus don Ghaeilge dá réir.
It is a sign of the progress and respect between our two groups that the Festival dianchúrsa (intensive one-day course), and An Droichead’s learners, are temporarily ‘moving house’ to the Turas headquarters in Skainos for this programme. After winning a prize together in this year’s Glór na nGael competition and – more importantly – after Turas having established successful Irish classes over the past few years which now have over a hundred students, there is little doubt that a bright future lies ahead for the two groups, the two communities, and for the Irish language as a result.
Tá súil agam go bhfaighidh tú rud éigin sultmhar duit féin sa chlár ilghnéitheach seo d’imeachtaí agus ghníomhaíochtaí, agus go mbainfidh tú idir spraoi agus spreagadh as a bheith ag tógáil droichead na Gaeilge linn, ag croí na féile.
I hope you find something enjoyable to do in this diverse programme of activities and events, and that you find both fun and inspiration from helping us build the bridge of the Irish language while having the best of craic.

Taispeántas Exhibition 22 Lúnasa - 5 Meán Fómhair - 22nd August - 5th September
Dúlamán Tá ríméad orainn anseo ag An Droichead taispeántas Féile na bliana seo a chur i láthair.
An Droichead are proud to present this year’s Féile exhibition,
Sa saothar seo atá cruthaithe go speisialta do Féile An Droichead 2013, cuireann an t-ealaíontóir agus ceoltóir as Béal Feirste, Susan Hughes, an fhreagairt radharcach ealaíonta s’aici ar an Ghaeilge agus ar an cheol traidisiúnta i láthair.
In works specially created for Féile An Droichead 2013, Belfast artist and musician Susan Hughes exhibits her visual response to Irish Language and Traditional music. Susan Hughes, artist and fiddle player, graduated from Belfast Art College in 2006. This year she has spent two months on residency in the Hardangerfjord area of Norway where the surroundings and local traditional music proved very inspiring. Susan produces a series of works exclusively for Féile An Droichead.
Bhain Susan Hughes, atá ina healaíontóir agus ina fidléir, céim amach ó Choláiste Ealaíne Bhéal Feirste sa bhliain 2006. Chaith sí dhá mhí i mbliana i mbun cónaitheachta in Hardangerfjord na hIorua, áit a raibh an tírdhreach agus an ceol áitiúil traidisiúnta ina spreagadh iontach di. Tá sraith saothar cruthaithe go speisialta aici do Féile An Droichead.
“I play Irish fiddle which has given me a passport to many of the culturally abundant areas of Ireland particularly the Gaelteacht of Donegal. For this series I have focused on my references to the Irish language through my own fiddle playing. I have used the names of tunes and songs which are well-known in Irish as the beginning points of mixed media paintings and collages. I use the text as an aesthetic mark making tool as well as a way to connect to the subject explicitly. Also in the series of works I will be using fragments from Facebook messages written by my Tory Island friends. These are a kind-of hybrid of Irish /Text-messaging/English which I always found intriguing as a representation of a language which is continually developing and very much alive.
“Seinnim ar an fhidil, rud a lig dom léargas a fháil ar na háiteanna is mó saibhris chultúrtha in Éirinn, go háirithe Gaeltacht Thír Chonaill. Don tsraith seo, dhírigh mé ar mo chuid tagairtí don Ghaeilge tríd mo chuid fidléireachta. D’úsáid mé ainmneacha na dtiúineanna agus na n-amhrán mór le rá sa Ghaeilge mar spriocanna do cholláisí agus do shaothair phéintéireachta meán measctha. Úsáidim an téacs mar uirlis aeistéitiúil chun marcanna a dhéanamh agus mar bhealach chun nascadh leis an ábhar i mbealach follasach. Beidh mé ag baint úsáide fosta as giotaí de theachtaireachtaí Facebook atá scríofa ag cairde liom ar Oileán Thoraigh. Is cineál meascán Gaeilge/ Teanga an téacs/ Béarla atá iontu, rud a shíl mise i gcónaí a bheith suimiúil mar chomhartha de theanga a bhíonn i gcónaí ag forbairt agus atá beo beathach.”

Tá An Droichead thar a bheith sásta Féile na bliana seo a oscailt leis an bheirt cheoltóirí iontacha seo san ionad ealaíne is úire i mBéal Feirste, The Mac.
An Droichead are delighted to open this year’s Féile with these two exceptional musicians in Belfast’s newest arts venue the Mac.
Tá gaol ceoil ar leith ag virtuoso na fidle Martin Hayes agus ag an ghiotáraí Mheiriceánach Dennis Cahill, rud a chiallaíonn go bhfuil an bheirt seo i measc na ndísreach is mó cuimhnithe ar na saolta seo. Tá clú idirnáisiúnta bainte amach acu as ucht an ceol traidisiúnta a ghlacadh chuig forimeall an tseánra, agus as an lucht éisteachta s’acu a chur faoi gheasa lena gcuid ceolchoirmeacha a threisíonn go mall, foighneach go finale beo bríomhar. Dar le The New York Times, is éard atá sa bheirt seo ná “a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’ ‘Sketches of Spain.” Saoi an ghiotáir is ea é Dennis Cahill, a bhfuil aithne ar an tionlacan nuálach ceoil s’aige mar ghné cheannródaíoch don ghiotár sa traidisiún gaelach.
Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship, ranking them among the most memorable partnerships of our era. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances. The New York Times calls them “a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’ ‘Sketches of Spain.” Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, whose innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition.

Liz Carroll in concert with Cormac Mc Carthy with a special performance of “Traditional Ulster Songs” by Alana Henderson. Satharn 24 Lúnasa - Saturday 24th August Liz Carroll Since she was 18, when she astounded the Celtic music world by winning the Senior All-Ireland Championship, Liz Carroll and her fiddle have been amazing audiences around the globe. Her recordings and appearances on concert stages, television and radio, have established Liz as one of traditional music’s most sought after performers. Liz Carroll was born in Chicago in 1956, to Irish immigrant parents from Limerick and Offaly counties. Her father, Kevin, a button accordion player, began teaching her to play Irish traditional music when she was five, and later she began Irish dancing. A violin class at her parochial school taught by Sister Francine inspired Liz to pick up the fiddle, but her main sources of musical schooling came from her family and the community.
Liz Carroll Ó bhain sí 18 mbliana d’aois amach- an aois a bhí sí agus í i ndiaidh geit a bhaint as saol an cheoil cheiltigh trí Chraobhchomórtas Sinsear na hÉireann a bhaint- bíonn luchtanna éisteachta ar fud an domhain curtha faoi dhraíocht ag Liz Carroll agus a cuid fidléireachta. Is mar gheall ar a cuid ceolchoirmeacha, a cuid léirithe ar an teilifís agus ar raidió, agus ar a bhfuil taifeadta aici go dtí seo go bhfuil Liz ar cheann de na hamhránaithe is mó ráchairte orthu i réimse an cheoil thraidisiúnta. Rugadh Liz Carroll i Chicago sa bhliain 1956 do thuismitheoirí Éireannacha a tháinig go Meiriceá ó chontae Luimnigh agus ó chontae Uíbh Fhailí. Thosaigh a hathair Kevin, seinnteoir an bhosca ceoil, ar an cheol traidisiúnta a theagasc do Liz agus í cúig bliana d’aois, agus thosaigh sí ag foghlaim an rince Ghaelaigh ina dhiaidh sin. Ba é ag rang veidhlín a bhí á theagasc ag an tSiúr Francine ar a scoil pharóiste a spreagadh Liz den chéad uair chun tosú ar an fhidil, ach b’as an teaghlach s’aici agus as an phobal a d’fhoghlaim sí mórchuid a ceirde.
Liz is a renowned composer as well, having written over 200 original tunes. She is a winner of the NEA National Heritage award, an Irish Echo Traditional Artist of the Year, and an Irish-American Magazine Top 100 Irish American. Her album Lost in the Loop in 2000 was named Celtic Album of the Year by the Association for Independent Music.
Cumadóir mór le rá is ea í Liz, agus níos mó ná 200 tiúin cumtha aici. Ar a bharr seo, is buaiteoir í de dhuaiseanna Oidhreacht Náisiúnta NEA, Ealaíontóir na Bliana an Irish Echo, agus í ainmnithe i measc na 100 Gael-Mheiriceánach is fearr ag Irish-American Magazine. Ainmníodh an t-albam s’aici Lost in the Loop mar Albam Ceilteach na bliana ag Cumann an Cheoil Neamhspleáiche sa bhliain 2000.

Cormac Mc Carthy Liz is joined by up and coming pianist and composer Cormac Mc Carthy who was born in Cork and recently moved to Chicago. He began studying piano aged four and soon after, discovered the joy of composition. His teenage years saw him develop both disciplines in tandem, studying with Mary Beattie and George Dunne at the Cork School of Music whilst receiving masterclasses from the likes of Philip Martin, Eva Poblocka, Barry Harris, Carola Grindea, Dr. Billy Taylor and Edward Simon.
Cormac Mc Carthy In éineacht le Liz beidh an pianódóir agus cumadóir Cormac McCarthy a bhfuil a chlú agus a cháil agdul i méid. Rugadh i gCorcaigh é agus bhog go Chicago ar na mallaibh. Thosaigh sé ag déanamh staidéir ar an phianó agus é ceithre bliana d’aois agus ba ghairid ina dhiaidh sin a thug anchumadóireacht sásamh ar leith dó. Sna déaga rinne sé forbairt ar an dá dhisciplín seo i ndiaidh a chéile agus é i mbun staidéir faoi Mary Beattie agus George Dunne ar Scoil Ceoil Chorcaigh agus ag fáil máistir-ranganna ó leithéid Philip Martin, Eva Poblocka, Barry Harris, Carola Grindea, An Dr. Billy Taylor agus Edward Simon.
In 2010 Cormac received the prestigious Bill Whelan International Music Bursary, an award earmarked for young Irish composers studying abroad. As a composer Cormac is looking to explore the synthesis of the different musical styles at his disposal, and create an aesthetic of interest and genuine cultural value
Bronnadh sparántacht ghradamúil Bill Whelan ar Chormac sa bhliain 2010, sparántacht a chuidíonn lecumadóirí óga na hÉireann staidéir a dhéanamh thar lear. Mar chumadóir tá suim ar leith ag Cormaccíoradh a dhéanamh ar an tsintéis a bhaineann leis na stíleanna éagsúla ceoil a bhfuil cur amach aigeorthu le haeistéitice spéisiúil a bhfuil luach dílis cultúir ag baint léi a bhaint amach.
Alana Henderson Alana Henderson is a singer-songwriter cellist originally from County Tyrone who released her frankly bewitching debut EP Wax & Wane in February & was listed by Hot Press magazine as ‘one to watch’ for 2013
Alana Henderson Amhránaí is scríbhneoir ar an dordveidhil is ea í Alana Henderson agus as contae Thír Eoghain ó dhúchas di. D’eisigh sí a céad EP draíochtach Wax & Wane i mí Feabhra agus bhí sí liostaithe mar ‘one to watch’ don bhliain 2013 ag an iris Hot Press.
Alana Henderson, aided by the support of the ACNI ACES programme, set about researching and re-recording traditional songs of Ulster and in the process, giving them her own contemporary twist. The culmination of the project will be a recording due for release in early November. Tonight’s performance will showcase of some of the songs which have been ‘reworked’ through the project, giving the traditional a fresh, contemporary twist, whilst acknowledging and respecting the rich tradition from which she has learned.
Thosaigh Alana- le cuidiú ón chlár ACNI ACES- i mbun taighde agus ath-thaifeadta ar amhráin thraidisiúnta Uladh, agus blas comhaimseartha s’aici féin á chur aici orthu sin. Is é an toradh a bheidh ag an tionscadal seo ná taifeadadh a bheas réidh le heisiúint go luath i mí na Samhna. Beidh léiriú na hoíche seo ina shárthaispeántas de na hamhráin a ndearnadh athmhúnlú orthu le linn an tionscadail. Bíodh go dtugtar blas úr, comhaimseartha do na hamhráin, tá meas go fóill le sonrú ag Henderson ar thraidisiún saibhir na n-amhrán.

Tá sé mar onóir dúinn a bheith mar óstach ar an deis iontach seo chun rud beag níos mó a fhoghlaim faoin chúlra s’aige, faoina shaol oibre ar dhá thaobh an Atlantaigh, faoi na pleananna atá aige dá thréimhse in oifig agus faoin ghrá atá aige dá theanga dhúchais. » Vernacularisms Siúlóid le léachtaí
» Vernacularisms A walk with readings
Le Jason O’ Rourke agus Tom Clarke
By Jason O Rourke and Tom Clarke
• Satharn 24 Lúnasa • 2in & 4:30 in • Teacht le chéile ag geataí Gharraithe na Lus, Ascaill Agincourt
• Saturday 24th August • 2pm & 4:30 pm • Assemble at Botanic Garden gates, Agincourt Avenue Jason O’Rourke’s Vernacularisms are very short stories about life in, and around, Belfast. They take a fresh look at the city’s vibrant culture during the period of rapid change from the last days of the ‘Troubles’ to the changing demographic situation of today. The Vernacularisms focus on Belfast’s untold stories; in these pages, ordinary people’s extraordinary lives challenge established perceptions of Belfast society. The stories are populated by pigeon-keepers, buskers, traffic wardens, shop assistants, dog-walkers, immigrants, and children, to name a few. The narratives combine to paint a picture of everyday life in the city, with all its humour, pathos, and complexity, in short, often poetic, vignettes.
Is éard atá i Vernacularisms le Jason O’Rourke ná scéalta an-ghairid faoi shaol Bhéal Feirste. I measc na gcarachtar sna scéalta seo tá coimeádaithe colúr, ceoltóirí sráide, maoir thráchta, cúntóirí siopa, siúlóirí madraí, inimircigh, agus páistí. Tagann na hinsintí le chéile chun gnáthlá i saol na cathrach a chruthú, leis an ghreann, an truamhéala agus an chastacht á léiriú i bhfínéid bheaga fileata.
The tales are presented from a number of viewpoints, using a variety of voices and literary genres, from first-person narratives to dictionary entries, letters, monologues, and plays. Presented in a local setting, they pay attention to aspects of the human condition that resonate far beyond the shores of Ireland. Tom Clarke has translated some of the pieces into Irish for the Household and Féile An Droichead.
Léirítear na heachtraí trí lear mór dearcthaí difriúla, agus úsáid á baint as meascán guthanna agus seánraí liteartha, idir insint phearsanta agus iontrálacha foclóra, litreacha, monalóga, agus drámaí. Cé gur i suíomh áitiúil atá Vernacularisms curtha i láthair, tá aird tugtha do ghnéithe staid an duine atá le sonrú ní amháin in Éirinn ach i bhfad i gcéin. Tá cuid de na píosaí aistrithe ag Tom Clarke go Gaeilge d’fhéilte Household agus do Féile An Droichead.
Jason O’Rourke is a writer, musician, and copy-editor based in Belfast. As well as writing short stories for his blog, Vernacularisms, some of which have appeared in print, he has also published a number of essays and articles about the history of the book in the Middle Ages, and has made several recordings of Traditional Irish Music on the concertina.
Scríbhneoir, ceoltóir agus cóipeagarthóir atá lonnaithe i mBéal Feirste is ea é Jason O’Rourke. Ní amháin go scríobhann Jason gearrscéalta dá bhlag, Vernacularisms- a raibh cuid acu curtha i gcló- ach tá roinnt aistí agus alt ar na Meánaoiseanna foilsithe aige agus lear mór taifeadtaí Cheoil Thraidisiúnta ar an chonsairtín déanta aige fosta.
Tom Clarke is a long-established musician based in Belfast; he teaches the Uilleann Pipes at the Crescent Arts Centre. Tom is originally from Donegal, and is a fluent Irish speaker.
Ceoltóir is ea é Tom Clarke atá ina chónaí i mBéal Feirste le fada; bíonn ranganna ar na Píoba Uilleann á dteagasc aige in Ionad Ealaíon an Chorráin. Is as Tír Chonaill ó dhúchas é agus Gaeilge ar a thoil aige.
