Charles Wood Charles Wood, the renowned musician and composer, was born at 11, Vicars’ Hill, Armagh in 1866 and received his early musical education as a chorister in the cathedral opposite his home. He later studied at the Royal College of Music and became a Professor there before succeeding Stanford, that other fine Irish musician and composer, as Professor of Music at Cambridge University. When Wood died in 1926 he left behind a legacy of over 250 sacred works plus a large number of hymn tunes. His other compositions include songs, music for Greek plays and chamber music. But it is largely for his sacred music that he is remembered today and this is why the focus of the Summer School is music in worship.

Welcome Message We are delighted to announce the programme for the 2018 Charles Wood Festival and Summer School. The line-up is extra-special as we mark two significant musical milestones: Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and the 100 years since the passing of Sir Hubert Parry. The 2018 Festival will feature over 30 events across Armagh and a return visit to Portadown by our Girls’ Choir. We’ll welcome the world authority on Parry, Professor Jeremy Dibble, who’ll be giving a talk on the composer and his work; the celebrity conductor Stephen Cleobury will be with us for a special Come and Sing event; and we’ll have a range of brilliant finalists from the BBC Young Musician Competition to dazzle us. Dame Gillian Weir, royalty of the organ world, will be in residence for 3 days, as part of our continuing relationship with the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition. She’ll also be awarding the first Dame Gillian Weir Medal as part of her visit to the Festival. Vocal stars from the National Opera Studio and BBC Proms will get the Festival underway in style, alongside the multi award-winning organist Martin Ennis. And there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved, including a range of events with our vocal coach to the stars, Paul Farrington. Unique and breath taking performances await you in Armagh this August. I do hope you'll be able to make the journey. Richard Yarr Chairman
