A WEEK LONG CELEBRATION OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA, MUSIC & ARTS

Fore word

It’s CultureTECH time again and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. If you didn’t get a chance to check us out last year, CultureTECH is a week-long celebration of digital technology, media and music taking place in Derry-Londonderry from September 9-15. It’s big, it’s messy, it’s huge fun and it’s open to everyone – even if you don’t consider yourself very ‘digital’. This year’s programme features well over 100 different sessions and events – from games tournaments to film screenings, live music to art installations and theatre to comedy. There’s also a dedicated CultureTECH Junior strand, supported by Seagate, which will be taking over The Venue at Ebrington for three full days. The rest of the programme takes place throughout the city in bars, coffee shops, unloved retail spaces, clubs, shopping centres, theatres, art galleries and even outdoors; so if you’re in the city you’re bound to catch something happening.

Ticket Types: Conference + Music (£99) Wednesday Conference sessions + free access to all music events

Workshops Pass & Registration Req'd (Free) Free to attend but you must register at culturetech.co

This year, we’re also joined by a host of friends including the Belfast Media Festival, the Loebner Prize, the DANI Awards, games tournament supremos Multiplay as well as speakers and artists from The Barbican, YouTube, the NY Philharmonic, the Tate, the MET and nearly 100 other organisations. And if you’re just interested in having a good time, we’ve got you covered too. From Thursday to Sunday, our music programme features showcase events from record labels festivals, promoters and music industry companies. We’ve even got hometown heroes, Jetplane Landing, in their first full Derry performance in 8 years! CultureTECH is already Northern Ireland’s biggest digital and creative industries event with even bigger plans already taking shape for 2014.

Access to all paid music events

So please, dive into the programme. We hope you’ll find something exciting, fun or just plain weird to enjoy and we’ll look forward to seeing you in September.

SEAGATE PRESENTS CULTURETECH JUNIOR Various Locations Throughout The Week

CultureTECH Junior will bring the best of science, technology and the digital world to the young people of the city across a week-long programme of activity - both in-school and out - with the potential to reach thousands of kids. The highlight of that programme is a 3-day exhibition in The Venue at Ebrington, featuring hands-on exhibits, challenges and events for both primary and secondary schools. The Venue will host students from over 20 schools on Thursday and Friday before flinging its doors open to the public on Saturday, September 14th. And it’s all completely free, thanks to the kind support of Seagate and our partners.

We are delighted to being hosting the very first visit of Teen Tech to these shores. Hosted by former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Maggie Philbin, Teen Tech will take place across two days at The Venue at Ebrington with over 600 students from secondary schools across the North West being invited to take part. TeenTech events are highly interactive experiences designed to inspire young teenagers and their teachers about careers in the contemporary world of Science, Engineering and Technology. Each TeenTech event gives Y8/Y9 students and teachers the opportunity to try their hand at experiments, to handle leading edge technology and, most importantly to spend time with the Engineers, Technologists and Scientists influencing their 21st century lives. Attending a TeenTech event is a powerful intervention just before students make GCSE subject choices, dispelling gender stereotypes and shifting perceptions of careers teenagers may have considered “difficult”, “geeky” or “boring”. We actively encourage young people of all abilities by highlighting different STEM career prospects from apprenticeships to entry level technicians and graduates.

Fresh from their BBC Radio 1 involvement, Bounce Education will be hosting workshops and a special music challenge involving participants from both primary and secondary schools using music elements from a DJ Tool Kit provided by Kaidi Tatham to produce beats and grooves to be performed with at the Real Times event. Further Education students will also be set the challenge of creating path blazing arrangements The most original productions will be given the opportunity to compose and perform live remixes.

A series of innovative workshops and tutorials will take place in schools between the 9th and 11th of September hosted by the University of Ulster’s Department of Widening Access and Participation. Key Stage 2 pupils will design digital stories and Apps using cutting-edge technology to enthuse pupils. A showcase of these pupil projects will then take place at the CultureTECH Junior exhibition between the 12th and 14th of September at The Venue, Ebrington.

CultureTECH Junior will also be travelling into schools throughout the week of the festival. Drawing on the wealth of local and international talent that makes up the main conference and workshop programme, we’ll be hosting events in secondary schools and community organisations throughout the city - helping us reach thousands more young people.

WE’RE ALSO HOSTING A HUGE CODERDOJO EVENT (PAGE 50) AND TWO DAYS OF EVENTS WITH YOUNG ENTERPRISE (PAGE 17)

Talkaoke is a pop-up talk show that is set up in festivals, clubs, galleries, conferences and on the street. It’s an illuminated round table with an enthusiastic host sitting in the middle on a swivel chair. Participants sit around the outside and are given the microphone whenever they want, coming and going as they please. The conversation is a journey from one unexpected subject to another. It can be topical, funny, deep, out-there, or all of the above. The participants come up with the topics and the host keeps everybody engaged. It’s a great chance to hear the latest ideas that people are talking about and to discover new ones.

Talkaoke will be travelling across the city from Thurs-Sat and popping up in lots of public spaces - so come find us, grab a seat and get talking.

You might even catch a little live music and entertainment thrown in for good measure.

CITY ARCADE City-Wide Thursday-Saturday

At the first CultureTECH Festival, way back in 2012(!), we invited local games developers to show off their wares at a popup arcade in Foyleside - and hundreds of people came along to play, and hundreds more for a quick peek. This year we’re going even bigger in partnership with gaming supremos Multiplay. We’re going from one arcade to SEVEN across the city centre at venues including Foyleside, Richmond Centre, Craft Village, Millennium Forum and more. Family friendly games include TrackMania, FIFA and Minecraft Parkour tournaments. And for the grown-ups and hardcore gamers, you can get stuck into some Call of Duty or Massive On-line Battle Arenas. Either way, it’s all free - courtesy of CultureTECH.

CAFÉ SCIENTIFIQUE Verbal Arts Centre, 19:30-20:30 Café Scientifique, the science chat forum, has developed an entertaining programme of informal conversations aimed at demystifying science - especially for CultureTECH. Our Café Scientifique programme at CultureTECH will focus on where Science and Technology meets Culture and the Arts. University of Ulster psychologist Professor Siobhan O’Neill, who is spearheading the local Café Scientifique initiative, says:

WORLDS APART: WHERE CLASSICAL MEETS METAL AND “ROCK BAND” NIGHT Sandinos 20:00-01:00 Symphonic Metal band ‘Selene’ will be bringing their cinematic sound to life on stage with “Worlds Apart” a concert blending Classical Music with Metal. To make this a truly unique experience the band will be performing live alongside Scála Strings, adapting both their own songs and others for a night to be remembered.

“We are very excited about the programme for CultureTECH and we will explore how the pervasiveness of technology impacts on the individual and wider society. We will also explore how scientific concepts can be communicated better through arts and culture’

Selene combine soaring operatic vocals, large cinematic arrangements and hard hitting melodic metal to create a powerful unique sound ranging from roaring timpani, delicate piano and head-banging solos, all within a single track.

Cafe Scientifique has received support from the Culture Company and these talks and events form part of the City of Culture programme of events for 2013.

Preceding this, ‘Rock Band’ will be set up on stage for anybody to play. Fully kitted and connected through the venue’s sound system, it is your chance to have your very own rock star experience.

Café Scientifique Derry~Londonderry events will be held in Bloom’s Café at 7:30pm on both Monday and Tuesday night during CultureTECH

How can the independent-minded, punk spirit of many of the City’s arts organisations be re-kindled? How can the arts be more to the fore in learning. How can citizens of Derry, especially the young, be involved with the process of writing the new arts story for this city? Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA will provide a keynote provocation and participants will be invited to engage in creative conversation with key decision makers from across Northern Ireland. A light lunch will be available from 1pm. This is a free event but please register in advance Speaker: Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA

TECHNOLOGY AND THE PERFORMING ARTS The Bentley 11:30-13:00

For a long time digital technologists have predicted the death of the linear TV. Now YouTube has revolutionised the content landscape, offering new talent access to a global audience and providing established producers with tools to cash in on IP and develop new properties.

From projection mapped stage design to motion tracked dance performances, the performing arts are increasingly making exciting use of technology in interesting, and often groundbreaking, ways. But at the heart of live performance is the authentic interaction with the audience, so we have to ask do new technologies improve this or get in the way? Are new technologies helping the arts world engage with new audiences or are we simply using tech for the sake of it?

TV producers are less concerned about the traditional overnight ratings and more how to increase engagement with fans to generate excitement and talkability around their projects. The future of content is being written as we speak. Moderator: John Farren, Creative Director, 360production

Working across four key markets (Europe, N America, Asia and GB) our export sessions will explore, in partnership with Invest NI, how your business can take those first steps - and, if you’re already exporting, you can do even more.

LIGHTBULB PHOTOGRAPHY - USING YOUR SMARTPHONE AS A CAMERA Workshop Time: 10:00-14:00 Lightbulb photography is a one-day workshop which aims to show you how to unlock the potential of your smartphone as a camera. As more and more people use their Smartphones instead of a camera, this course aims to teach you how to get the best out of your device, including tips and tricks for better mobile photography and recommended apps to add a professional edge to your images.

PRACTICAL MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION Workshop 11:00-13:00 Learn to shoot, edit and upload in a day. This is a short introduction to the series of courses run by Willis McBriar and Louise Friel, training Associates at Viewdigital. org, aimed at practitioners in the Community and Voluntary sector. As the title says these are ‘hands-on’ workshops where anyone unfamiliar with the use of video for social media can quickly learn how to use cheap cameras and free (or nearly free) software to deliver their message to Youtube or Vimeo and then publicise it using Facebook and Twitter.

Light Bulb Photography will host three workshops during CultureTECH, facilitated by local artist John Deery, Lecturer in Photography and Digital Imaging at NWRC.

The workshops come in two varieties, one, which uses iMovie as the editing package, suitable for Apple computers, has been successfully delivered to The Bytes Project and RNIB. The other version of the course uses a web app, Wevideo and is suitable for practically any computer and can even run on Android tablets. The rapid development of Wevideo, which is free to use in its most basic form, creates the possibility of very rapid learning for many users who may have been put off by the complexity and cost of desktop editing.

The workshops run from 10am - 2pm and include an introductory session, hints and tips, a local ‘Photo Walkabout’ getting hands-on experience and advice, followed by a review and processing session, where each student leaves with a print of their work.

Working across four key markets (Europe, N America, Asia and GB) our export sessions will explore, in partnership with Invest NI, how your business can take those first steps - and, if you’re already exporting, you can do even more.

WHERE SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE STORYTELLING PLATFORM Learning Pool Cottage 11:00-13:00 ’Where Social Media is the storytelling platform’ is a presentation and seminar exploring how social media tools can be used to tell immersive online stories.

DEBATE: WHAT IS A DIGITAL SOCIETY? Learning Pool Cottage 14:00-16:00

DIGITAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS Learning Pool Cottage 16:00-18:00

Just about every city on the planet has some kind of digital strategy. It’s a pretty easy thing to say but it’s much harder to clarify exactly what that means - what is a digital city?

Meet three members of Women In Business NI who run successful digital businesses in Northern Ireland.

The presentation will be focused on a theatrical performance created by Marcus Lilley called ‘The Darkened City’ (2011) a Neo Noir immersive experience where audiences follow the central character in his life as a photographer on Twitter in a fictional city rife with corruption. ‘Harry’s Return’ is the 2013 sequel where Harry returns to the city with only an Iphone to document his story, will Harry survive the unforgiving city a second time?

Is it about access to public servants? Is it about digital services? Is it about fostering a startup community? How about broadband connectivity and wifi access?

Marcus Lilley is the founder of FutrSocial, a creative social media agency based in in the South West of England.

Workshop Pass

The presentation will give an overview of the process behind the making of ‘The Darkened City’ including the writing process and character development, followed by a seminar on the future possibilities of social media as a storytelling platform.

This session will bring together individuals and organisations from local councils to national thought leaders for a series of (very) short presentations and then a curated debate.

The film features personal and moving interviews with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, set against colourful and unusual festivals with a very strong emphasis on music. This 80-minute story brings a strong local angle to a world-wide phenomenon that is replicated in many parts of the world and aims to make a difference in viewers’ hearts and minds by delving into the thoughts and emotions of individuals from different religious and ethnic backgrounds who have chosen to make Northern Ireland their home. Friday On Friday, 13th September, Social Innovation Camp will bring together 30 or more people from Northern Ireland together with a range of writers, comic artists, editors, and publishers for an experiment in storytelling. We will put together teams of 5-6 people who will be given a set of constraints and prompts and told to create a story – in any form imaginable – from it. This could be an app, a book, an animated video, a comic, or anything. What we’ll do Teams will be given food, space, and a number of prompts. Each team will also receive a specialist mentor, in the form of a real working writer, editor, comic artist, or game designer.

OFF THE PAGE: STORYTELLING WITHOUT BORDERS The CultureTECH Workshop 10:00-18:00

Story bits will be uploaded to a website during the day, and some prizes will come out at the end of the day. The mentors – writers, artists, agents, and editors – will run a series of workshops TBA. At the end & after the day Teams will present what they’ve done at the end of the day, and we’ll work with teams to turn their idea into an ebook or website as appropriate with further help. Interested? Sign up to get involved by emailing offthepage@sicamp.org Who’s involved: Off the Page is a project of the Social Innovation Camp, funded by the Building Change Trust in association with the BIG Lottery. INTELLIGENT DIGITAL STORYTELLING Millennium Forum 10:00-13:00

Intelligent digital storytelling focuses on bringing together the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital storytelling in order to get computers to understand and tell stories. Dr. Roger Schank is one of the world’s pioneers in digital storytelling having developed some of the world’s first storytelling and story-understanding computer programmes in the 1970s with his research team at Yale University. Digital storytelling features in The Loebner Prize in AI where the world’s best chatbots compete in generating and responding to story lines. Storytelling is pervasive in film and computer games and an interesting avenue for the future is how robots can understand and tell stories with each other and with people.

HOW TO RELEASE MUSIC DIGITALLY (PROPERLY) Nerve Centre 11:00-13:00 The internet has enabled anyone - from major label to bedroom DJ - to sell their music online. This has created great opportunities but it’s also created even greater competition, with everyone clamouring to be heard. This panel will look at today’s marketplace and give advice on tried and tested methods of getting your music out there, and more importantly, getting it noticed and getting it sold. We will cover the importance of social media for artists and how to build your own audience; we’ll take a look at the many methods of bringing your music to market and the pros and cons of each; and we’ll finish up by taking a peek at life beyond the MP3 and where we go once it’s gone .... The session will include a curated discussion followed by a Q&A session with the panel. Speakers:

MUSIC FOR VIDEO GAMES: JABA MUSIC AND HALO 4 Nerve Centre 11:00-13:00 Video game soundtracks have moved on a bit from the Tetris theme tune and now regularly feature in music charts across the globe. Barry Campbell and James Cassidy know more than most about the industry having secured the services of Neil Davidge to compose and produce the score of the record breaking video game ‘Halo 4’. They are also Microsoft’s worldwide licensee for the Halo 4 soundtrack - which charted in the US Billboard Top 50 charts in November 2012 at the highest ever position for a video game soundtrack. Barry and James will be joined in this session by games developers who’ll explain their approach to creating - or sourcing - a great soundtrack. So if you’d like to know more about how you can use music in your games - or are a musician keen to learn about this growing market make sure you’re here.

DEBATE: ARE WE GETTING DIGITAL LITERACY RIGHT? Learning Pool Cottage 11:00-13:00 Digital literacy researchers explore a wide variety of topics, including how people find, use, summarize, evaluate, create, and communicate information while using digital technologies. Research also encompasses a variety of hardware platforms, such as computer hardware, cell phones and other mobile devices and software or applications, including web search or Internet applications more broadly. As a result, the area is concerned with much more than how people learn to use computers. (As ripped from Wikipedia). What we’re interested in is a simple question, how do we get more people using the technology that’s at their hands? And how do we widen access to those technologies? This session is a debate. We’ll be inviting key experts to give us their take on the subject and then we’ll thrash it out between them and the audience. Fisticuffs may ensue.

Friday Game developers from all over will gather together in Derry, to pour forth their creative juices in an extravaganza of game development talent that hasn’t been seen since…well, since the last GameCraft! Participants, either individually or as a team, have a whole 24 hours to create a game centred around a random theme to be announced on the day.

GAMECRAFT Millennium Forum 19:00 FRI -19:00 SAT

It will be exciting, it will be intense, it will be… slightly pungent, frankly. But it will be worth it! After 24 hours, a panel of highly trained judges (at least, they look highly trained, they are all wearing monocles) will examine each of the submitted games and select a few stand-out entries to be awarded some awesome prizes. While the games are being pinched, prodded, and poked, we’ll all have some well-deserved refreshments and a bit of time for the allimportant networking. Participants are free to come and go as they need - whether that’s to grab a few beers or a few hours sleep - be we’ll be here round the clock. So if you want to work straight through, bring a pillow! Good luck and may the most ridiculous game win! http://dublingamecraft.com/events/derry-gamecraft/ 7PM FRI to 7PM SAT GameCrafting 7PM SAT to 10PM Game play and judging Registration Req'd Partner: GameCraft Dublin

By the way .... we're working on something very special for this one. We hoping to bring in one of the world's biggest games companies to help make this the biggest GameCraft event ever. Watch this space

Bass Clef, T-Woc, Sina, Yoru + guests For one night only, Belfast label Rudimentary Records brings together some exceptionally tasty talent for a night of beats, bass and so on. The label has a simple plan, to release music representative of the sounds and styles they have been promoting over the years both at live events and on their radio show. Not sticking exclusively to one style over another, Rudimentary explores deep bass related music, from dubstep, to dub-techno, drum and bass, and anything else in between. The focus for the label is quality, depth and longevity over trying to tap into “the in sound” and some dancing!

Sunday We have been waiting for Artificial Intelligence (AI) since time began and Confucius, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Minsky and McCarthy first discussed it. AI has appeared in many science fiction books and films such as `2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘Blade Runner’ and `The Terminator’. Many predicted we would have AI by the year 2000 and for 23 years now people have been desperately seeking to pass The Turing Test and win The Loebner Prize in AI. No computer programme has yet won the Loebner Grand Prize of US $100,000 (& 18kt solid Gold Medal) or the Silver Medal Prize of US $25,000 (& Silver Medal)! In this workshop comprising presentations and panel discussions by leading academics and industrialists from the USA, UK and Ireland we will ask the following pertinent questions:

WAITING FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: DESPERATELY SEEKING THE LOEBNER PRIZE University Of Ulster 10:00-17:00

• - What is AI? • - Does `The Turing Test’ test for AI? We will also investigate the mathematical and computational foundations of AI and demonstrate commercial applications in online learning, computer games, sentiment analysis, digital storytelling, audio streaming, hiding information in images, smartphone companions, industrial design and robot warfare.
