Here we are already entering year three of Harmony Fest and it gives me great pleasure to launch this year with our newly formed committee of seven volunteers. This years festival is set to top the previous two! As a lifelong resident of Holywood and a singer/ songwriter I have a strong belief that we can all celebrate the true meaning of “community” through the medium of music. It’s hard to believe this will actually be the third year we’re doing it! Harmony Fest is a “not for profit” company limited by guarantee which recently applied for charitable status and hopes to have secured this later in the year. This should put us in a good position to apply to the various funding bodies for 2018. However for 2017 the absence of any funding or enough corporate sponsors meant we needed to look for alternative ways to help fund our festival. We took the decision to launch a crowdfunding page that will help us to expand the festival and include a number of free events for children, families, the elderly and the disadvantaged. With your help no matter how small, we can achieve this and have already been able to book the Tonic area (see page 7). Events such as these are of benefit to our whole community. More information on our crowdfunding campaign can be found on page 6 of this brochure and at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/holywood-harmony-festival where you can find details of how you can help make this event the biggest and best ever for all sections of our community. You can opt into one of our pledges or donate as little as you wish both online and at Garry’s Barber Shop and there are some very nice online rewards to be gained in return for your support. This year we welcome the addition of buskers to the High Street on Friday 2nd June to kick off the festival as part of our outreach programme to support youth

development in the arts and give them a platform to perform. Please be kind and look after our young buskers, many of whom write their own material and are highly talented. Our thanks go to Ray Alexander for sourcing them. Once again this year we are happy to announce our chosen charity as the NSPCC NI. Any donations made during the festival will go directly to physically, sexually and neglectfully abused children in Northern Ireland. Please support them and follow their Facebook page. 2017 is set to make history in our wonderful town. For the first time ever a UK and USA chart topping act will be performing in Holywood and Harmony Fest is both delighted and proud to be making this happen! There is great excitement surrounding this year’s acts and once again this wonderful event will reflect the delicious richness of our community and offer up a cornucopia of utterly brilliant musical entertainment. With this in mind I would encourage you to spread the word, invite everybody, switch off the tele, book your babysitters, come out to meet old friends, make new ones, and listen to the heart of Holywood pounding to a brand new beat. In my voluntary capacity as festival director and chair of the festival committee I have been very ably supported by committee members Kevan Furbank, Neil Kearney, Garry Jackson, Rachel Woods, Elizabeth Furbank and David Addis. My sincere thanks to all of them for their contribution to our community. Special thanks from the committee to Alison Auld, Simon Bridge, Jo Watson and Karen Smyth for their valuable guidance and advice. See you all there and let the fun begin!

Hothouse Flowers

Saturday 3rd June, Festival Marquee Something amazing happens when Hothouse Flowers step onto the stage – something that has been shaped by over thirty years of singing and playing all over the world, yet no two shows have ever been the same! Since the release of their last CD, ‘Into Your Heart’ Hothouse Flowers (Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó Braonáin and Peter O’Toole) have been playing steadily around Ireland, America, Great Britain, Japan and Europe. Most recently their sound has been enhanced and reinvigorated by the return of O’Toole on bass, bouzouki and vocals. There’s a sense of musical adventure, an impulse to reach new heights and depths in music where the unspoken aim is that the band and the audience become one and the world becomes a different place for a while. Hothouse Flowers are a rock n’roll band, a traditional band, a soul band, a jam band with their own organic jam spread on both sides of the bread! There is an unpredictable energy in the band that harkens back to the ‘Risk’ days. They call upon their grand repertoire to create a show that is unique

to the time and place. No two shows are the same. Improvisation can come at any point and allow them to express their brightest and darkest influences. Hothouse Flowers came out of tough times. They played the streets and brought the streets to the stages of the world. Famed for hits such as ‘Don’t Go’, ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ and ‘Feet On The Ground’ among many more the Flowers are set to bring a truly unique show to the festival.

support from the Nat Youle Band & Ciaran McElhinney The Nat Youle band are an upbeat, foot tapping band whose “hit the dance floor” set will be complimented by the haunting and unique vocals of lead singer Nat Youle. Look out for the band’s first EP due out this summer. Having supported artists such as Horslips, Alabama 3, Henry McCullough and Pat McManus Ciaran McElhinney has carved a niche as being a versatile artist capable of playing many styles and crowds. Influenced by a wide range of music his own style is a local brand of Blues and Americana meets Bluegrass meets Rock. Doors 7pm, Show 7.15 - 10.45pm. Tickets £25 from Garry’s Barber Shop, 113 High St, Holywood or online at www.wegottickets.com/event/393147

Ulaid & Duke Special

such major markets as Los Angeles, New York and Nashville. Originally from South Carolina, American Dana Masters grew up listening to soul, rhythm and blues and gospel music. Her love for music developed as she grew up and lead her to study music, majoring in vocal performance.

Friday 2nd June, Festival Marquee John McSherry, Dónal O’Connor and Seán Óg Graham are all regarded as fine musicians in their own right. All three are currently living in County Antrim and having spent many late nights in each other’s company on the Belfast session scene, it was inevitable that they would come together to record at some stage. Featuring new compositions which sit comfortably alongside traditional pieces from 19th Century collections, plus fresh and progressive arrangements, coupled with occasions of free form solos, Ulaid will take you on an emotive and uplifting musical journey. From Ireland to the neighbouring Celtic regions, these three fearless musical adventurers will chart a path from the ancient music of the Gael to the contemporary shape of traditional Irish music today. Likewise, it’s always been about music for Duke Special. Growing up in Coleraine, Downpatrick and Holywood, he was the one “doing my scales

in the bedroom” while other kids were kicking footballs around. He dabbled in several short-lived bands in his teens and early twenties but it wasn’t until 2002 - when he adopted the moniker of Duke Special - that things began to coalesce on a greater scale. Now best known for songs such as ‘Freewheel’, ‘Wake Up Scarlett’ and ‘Portrait’, over the last five years alone, Duke Special has undertaken musical projects based on the photography of Strand, Stielglitz and Steichen for the New York Met (‘Under the Dark Cloth’), written a concept album based on a Paul Auster novel and recorded by Steve Albini (‘The Silent World of Hector Mann’), crafted shows based on the music of Harry Nilsson and Belfast legend Ruby Murray, collaborated with Clannad and even had the time for a sideline in DJing by establishing his Gramophone Club.

support from The Emerald Armada & Redhouse The Emerald Armada was brought to life by lead singer Neil Allen and bassist Gary Lynas. Later Benjamin Hamilton (rhythm guitar) and Dermot Moynagh joined the band bringing a unique and contemporary bodhrán playing to the forefront. The last addition came in the form of Lead Guitarist Tony McHugh.

and lead vocals, Adam McCallan (guitar), Odhran Cassidy (bass) and Darragh Tibbs (drums). Influences include The Beatles, Kasabian, Blink 182, Arctic Monkeys, Jimi Hendrix, Blur, Oasis, AC/DC, The Strokes.

Based in Belfast out of Jamlive Studios, Red House are a Blues/Blues Rock group. They are a sharp four piece unit, who write all their own songs. The group are Caolan Donaghy (guitar

Gareth Dunlop & DANA MASTERS

Sunday 4th June, Festival Marquee Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Gareth Dunlop has been hailed as one to watch by BBC Radio Ulster and named 2011 Young Songwriter of the Year at the Annual Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival. Dunlop’s songs have been featured in numerous hit television series including ‘Cougar Town’, ‘One Tree Hill’, ‘Private Practice’, ‘Army Wives’, ‘Life Unexpected’ and many more. He has opened for Jeff Beck, Jools Holland, Nanci Griffith, Angus & Julia Stone, Paul Carrack, The Steeldrivers, Imelda May and more. Snow Patrol performed Dunlop’s song, ‘Firefly’, with a full orchestra and invited him to join the band on stage as the lead vocalist for their special homecoming performance in Belfast.

Dana’s music eventually took her to the west coast of America, where she met an Irishman who would become her husband and bring her home with him to Northern Ireland. In 2012, Dana met Linley Hamilton at a local music venue. Dana, Linley and some of the best jazz musicians playing in Ireland began a weekly residency in the basement of McHughes bar in Belfast. It was only the beginning, inspiring her first EP and leading to live work with BBC Radio 4 and Proms in the Park. Soon she was singing regularly with Van Morrison. Dana’s reputation as one of Ireland’s top vocalists continues to gain momentum.

support from SAM WICKENS Sam Wickens is a powerful singer and songwriter, gifted with the talent to arouse the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics. Often compared to Jeff Buckley, John Martyn, Bon Iver, Paolo Nutini, he is a perceptive writer and performer with a restless creativity, a personal blend of soul, blues, gospel, and folk. A native of Bangor County Down, Sam recently traveled to Tennessee, where he performed at the famous Bluebird Café, Nashville.

Since the age of 16, Dunlop has made his living performing live music. He recently finished an acoustic tour in the U.S. that included stops in Doors 7pm, Show 7.15 - 10.30pm. Tickets £20 from Garry’s Barber Shop, 113 High St, Holywood or online at www.wegottickets.com/event/393964
