The Foyle Film Festival celebrates its 25th year with a high quality programme of feature films, animations, workshops, outreach and special events, aimed at primary, post-primary schools, colleges, and universities. This year, to mark its quarter century, the festival takes as its main theme MILESTONES - celebrating inspirational individuals and events that have left behind an enduring legacy. To mark the life and achievements of Apple founder Steve Jobs, this year’s education programme offers a special Pixar Retrospective honouring the legacy of this creative and innovative man. The programme pays tribute to the late Neil Armstrong with screenings and workshops highlighting the excitement, wonder and inspiration of the moon landings and space
exploration. While special screenings and workshops mark the Titanic Centenary and Charles Dickens’ Bicentennial respectively. The education programme also takes a digital journey through the peace process from its earliest days to the recent historic meeting and handshake between The Queen and Sinn Fein’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games celebrated the best of human achievement and endeavour. The success of the games inspired millions of people around the world, and provided a lasting legacy for future generations. The example of the London 2012 Olympics serves as an inspiration for our own city as we move towards hosting the City Of Culture 2013. The festival education programme

The festival is passionate about discovering and nurturing young filmmakers and, to support this, introduced the CCEA Moving Image Arts (MIA) Student Awards. Sponsored by Derry City Crystal, the Foyle Film Festival presents the unique awards annually to students at the Festival in Derry/ Londonderry, and also at the Cinemagic Festival in Belfast. Over the last 25 years the Foyle Film Festival has become renowned for attracting top industry professional to the city. Past guests have included high profile names such as: Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Neil Jordan, Wim Wenders, Kenneth Branagh, Christiane Kubrick, Andrew Eaton, Roddy Doyle, Stephen Frears, Jimmy McGovern - to name but a few.

PIXAR
RETROSPECTIVE
With Pixar, Steve Jobs changed the film industry forever. Until the Apple founder came along and rescued LucasFilms’ fledgling computer graphics division, animation in Hollywood was a dying art. There’s never been a movie studio with an unbroken streak of hit movies like Pixar. From the original TOY STORY to FINDING NEMO to Cars, RATATOUILLE, and TOY STORY 3, the animation wizards at Pixar have won over the industry, forcing Hollywood to change how it makes films. Now people expect great computer-animated films. And it never would have happened without Steve Jobs. Apple’s late leader leaves behind a vibrant legacy of pioneering efforts in the fields of high tech and entertainment, from the Mac, iPhone, iPad to Pixar. To mark this MILESTONE, the 25th Foyle Film Festival pays tribute to Steve Jobs with a special PIXAR RETROSPECTIVE. The retrospective features special screenings in the Brunswick Moviebowl of the animated classics: TOY STORY 3, WALL-E, THE INCREDIBLES, and A BUG’S LIFE.

to go off to college, Buzz, Woody and the rest of his loyal toys are troubled about their uncertain future. TOY STORY 3 is a comical adventure in Disney Digital 3D that lands the toys in a room full of untamed tots who can’t wait to get their sticky little fingers on these “new” toys. It’s full-scale pandemonium as they try to stay together, ensuring “no toy gets left behind.” Meanwhile, Barbie comes face to plastic face with Ken (yes, that Ken).

Seven centuries have passed and humans are history. Overpopulation and mass consumerism have literally buried the planet in waste, forcing humans to flee by spaceship and delegate robots to clear up the mess. The monumental task of clearing it all up has fallen to the logical evolution of the micro chipped wheelie-bin: a little robot named Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, or Wall-E for short. THE INCREDIBLES VENUE BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR FOUNDATION STAGE/KEY STAGES 1&2 AREAS OF LEARNING LANGUAGE & LITERACY PDMU/WAU THEMES FAMILY/RELATIONSHIPS RESPONSIBILITY/HELPING OTHERS
THE INCREDIBLES is a riveting entertainment, with danger, excitement, intensity, and (gasp!) a body count, torture and explosions well into double figures. This is a U-rated family feature with a pleasant bite. The Parrs are no average family: they are a family with superhero gifts. Unfortunately, they and their superhero compatriots have been ostracised, due to a cheerfully satirised lawsuit culture, and are hidden from the populace by MiB figures, who relocate them time after time when their powers are detected.
“Pixar’s incredible Incredibles movie is… a story that’s really about the importance of family and what yours can accomplish if you stick together. It’s also about being unafraid to stand out, a movie about the importance of actually achieving and being rewarded for it.” CinemaBlend.com

This delicate balance between the species is blown wide apart when Ernest, a large, solitary and rather grumpy bear meets Célestine, a wide-eyed orphan mouse who previously never believed that big bears even existed. Eventually he welcomes her into his home. Despite the company and support that they give one another, and against all odds, this is a friendship that flies in the face of the established order of things. Before long the mice and bear authorities, fearing the change that they are confronted with, are forced to work together to address the problem presented by our two heroes. This sentimental story follows the arrival of a new teacher at a remote boys school in 1949 France (the war is a largely unspoken but looming presence). With disciplinary problems rampant, and the policies of the old-fashioned headmaster not helping, Monsieur Mathieu
decides to introduce choral singing as a way to bridge the gap with his students. An uplifting tale about a masterful teacher who put his heart into his work and changed the lives of his students forever. Features a soundtrack of beautiful music. Received 2 Oscar® nominations in 2005.

In 1912, the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic sails from Southampton with 2207 passengers on board. They excitedly dine and dance and the sea is incredibly calm. Then a lookout spots
an iceberg looming up directly ahead. The boat steers away, but the submerged part of the berg rips a 300-foot gash under the waterline. The crew realise the vessel will sink in less than three hours. As those on board realise their fate, calm gives way to panic. There is a rush to the lifeboats, but there are not enough for all the passengers... Golden Globe winner.
“A Night to Remember is moving, intensely so, but such a word misses the point. The film animates deep fears, our most primal responses to danger, and unexpected acts of selflessness…Covering all of the
emotional bases (greed, fear, courage and restraint), at heart this is an intensely humanistic film. People, not profits, matter.” – Damian Cannon, Movie Reviews UK

One of our favorite natural history subjects, the good old dinosaur, gets a makeover in this fantastically ambitious and groundbreaking documentary. Based on cutting-edge paleontology and the latest fossil records, see Dinosaurs as you’ve never seen them before in this exciting new film that combines cutting-edge effects and extraordinary scientific discoveries to breathe new life into these legendary beasts. Against stunning backdrops that span Jurassic times through to the Ice Age, the film presents some familiar
faces as well as some new discoveries from the past ten years; including the biggest plant-eaters that ever walked the Earth, it is an unmissable experience for both young and old. Narrated by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Encounters at the End of the World, Cave of Forgotten Dreams), Dinotasia is fantastic journey to an ancient and mysterious world, all ruled over by the mighty Dinosaur. The film uses CGI to bring the stories to life, but draws on animation’s birth in silent film and early Disney to create proper, traditional visual storytelling.

The 25th Foyle Film Festival has joined forces with The Digital Film Company to provide an introductory workshop in what’s set to be one of the biggest growth areas in TV and film production over the next few years. According to Neil Richards, “Up to now, stereo 3D has been the realm of big budget feature films and blue-chip TV productions, but all that is changing with the move
to internet delivery and widespread use of mobile platforms for viewing. The demand for 3D content looks set to explode now that 3D TVs cost no more than conventional sets and “glasses-free” tablets, laptops and computers are becoming widespread. The technology is changing at the production and post-production end too, with the arrival of inexpensive 3D cameras, rigs, and stereoscopic software editing now possible on Mac and PC computers. Production costs have fallen as equipment becomes cheaper and experience has been gained within the industry.” This introductory 3D workshop covers basic stereo 3D principles, terminology and human physiological constraints leading to an explanation of the factors that produce good and bad 3D viewing experiences. Stereo 3D technology, standards, cameras, displays and 3D cinema are then explained. Emphasis in the last half of the workshop is on handson filming with the footage reviewed live on 3D TVs. What Do You See? has been acknowledged as one of the most valuable tools to highlight dignity and respect for the elderly. The film has been used around the world to re-enforce person centered care and the expectation of treating others as you would wish to be treated no matter what age, race, colour, creed or disability. The film was made by Amanda Waring when her mother, the acclaimed actress Dame Dorothy Tutin, was being treated for leukaemia and Amanda witnessed the devastating effect that the lack of compassionate care had on her mind, body, and spirit. This heart wrenching experience drove Amanda to not only move and campaign for her mother to ensure her end of life care was full of the compassion, respect and dignity that she deserved, but compelled her to want to help others too. It was with this sheer emotive determination that she went on to produce what is now renowned worldwide as the best training film for care providers. The creation of the award winning film What Do You See? has since paved the way for a series of further films produced by Amanda, with endorsements from The Royal College of Nursing and many other institutes and societies, for use with staff training.

a mountain. Edward is the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can replace Edward’s scissorhands with conventional hands. The nurturing Peg is protective of Edward and invites him to come live with her family. One of the film’s jokes is that Peg’s job as an Avon lady makes her an outsider like Edward. Although her life on the surface resembles the rest of the town’s, she is the one who embraces Edward and accepts his difference. The world in which Edward finds himself is a model of dull conformity and although he is initially accepted by the community, as an entertaining oddball, they cruelly reject him when things go wrong. Edward’s experience mirrors director Tim Burton’s own struggle to survive the bland, conformist world of his youth. Burton felt isolated and misunderstood, and Edward emerged as a character: “who wants to touch but can’t, who was both creative and destructive… It was the feeling that your image and how people perceive you are at odds with what is inside you.” - Tim Burton

Based on the Charles Dickens classic. Orphan Pip rises from humble circumstances thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class-conscious world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new status to pursue Estella, a beautiful, heartless heiress he has always loved. The shocking truth behind his fortune will have devastating consequences to everyone he cares about. Directed by Mike Newell and scripted by ‘One Day’ author David Nicholls, the film features Helena Bonham Carter as Miss
Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch. Of his new take on a classic tale, Newell explains “I’ve tried to make a film that is true to the theatrical vividness, energetic characters and high colour that (Dickens) is loved for.” Nicholls revealed last year that he had written a new ending for his “thriller” version of the film. “Dickens came up with two endings - one which is incredibly bleak and one which is unrealistically romantic and sentimental,” he said last November. “Neither are quite satisfactory and we’ve come up with an ending that is somewhere in between.” He also said the film would give a glimpse of Miss Havisham’s wedding, an event that has not been seen in previous movie versions. An experiment in democracy is taking place in Wuhan, the most populous city in central China. For the first time ever, the students in grade three at Evergreen Primary School in Wuhan, China have been asked to elect a class monitor. Traditionally appointed by the teacher, the class monitor holds a powerful position, helping to control the students, keeping them on task and doling out punishment to those who disobey. The teacher has chosen three candidates: Luo Lei (a boy), the current class monitor; Cheng Cheng (a boy); and Xu Xiaofei (a girl). Each candidate is asked to choose two assistants to help with his or her campaign.
For all three children, the campaign takes its toll, especially for the losing candidates and their assistants. THE ENIGMA OF FRANK RYAN VENUE NERVE CENTRE CLC
A sympathetic but searching portrait of Frand Ryan (19021944), IRA activist in Ireland, International Brigade Volunteer in Spain and Nazi collaborator in Berlin. Ryan enters a Faustian pact with a Nazi regime he believes will assist in forging a united Ireland. His collaboration is justified by the republican motto: “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.” But the former radical and internationalist pays a heavy price for this pact. The film
raises important questions about the collaboration between the IRA and the Nazis in World War II. It opens up a long suppressed debate about Irish neutrality in that war. Drawing upon Ryan’s correspondence and using a rich mix of period archive combined with live action – with a striking portrayal of Frank Ryan by Dara Devaney - the film makers tell a story of tragic proportions and probes the enigma that was Frank Ryan. The screening will be introduced by the Director Desmond Bell and followed by a Panel Discussion.

BROKEN LIGHTS OF YUGOSLAVIA EXHIBITION
2012 is the 21st Anniversary of the Croatian war of Independence and the 20th Anniversary of the Bosnian War of Independence. To mark these milestones the 25th Foyle Film Festival, in association with the Open the Shutters and Teaching Divided Histories projects, is delighted to present an exhibition of landmark images from these conflicts by acclaimed Argentinean photographer Emmanuel Ortiz. BROKEN LIGHTS OF YUGOSLAVIA contains over 100 images of the Balkan conflicts and charts the violence and horror of these recent events, as well as the enduring triumph of
the human spirit of survival. The images are presented by War Photo, a Dubrovnik based gallery of conflict imagery, at Foyle Film Festival, as part of the Open the Shutters project. Open the Shutters is a Nerve Centre project for Culture Company 2013 which explores ways in which conflict and conflicted spaces have been portrayed both here and internationally, and provides opportunities for learning and education around conflict in Northern Ireland, Croatia and Berlin.
SPECIAL TALK BY WADE GODDARD: Conflict Photographer and War Photo founder Wade Goddard will present his illustrated journey from growing up in New Zealand to a life changing visit to Croatia in 1992 which has catalyzed a deep engagement with the craft, ethics and purpose of visually documenting conflict and led to the establishment of War Photo as a centre for conflict imagery internationally.
SPECIAL TALK BY MARK McCAULEY: BBC news cameraman Mark McCauley will guide participants through his personal experience of the Balkan Conflict, giving an illustrated insight to his role on the ground throughout the Siege of Sarajevo and the wider war. Mark will discuss the practical realities of living and working as cameraman inside a war zone, as well as giving real insight into the ethical and creative context of his work.
