WELCOME The Foyle Film Festival Education Programme has a broad focus this year concentrating on action, adventure and the struggle to achieve a better way of life. The primary programme takes the audience on a journey of adventure from sandy African landscapes to the cobblestones of Paris in Zarafa – the story of Maki, a young boy taken from his village by slave traders. The Short Game follows a group of seven-year-old golfing protégés as they train for, and compete in, the World Championships of Junior Golf. The post-primary programme explores the struggle for women’s suffrage and the right to have an education. Suffragette is the stirring story, inspired by the early-20th century campaign by the suffragettes for the right of women to vote. Schedule permitting, director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) will introduce the screening and take part in a post-screening discussion.

Foyle Film Festival is the flagship project of the Nerve Centre. The festival acknowledges the ongoing support of City of Derry Crystal, and venue partner Brunswick Moviebowl.
Meanwhile, He Named Me Malala is a portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban when returning home from school because she was advocating for girls' education. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls' education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund. Schedule permitting, Aneeta Prem, President of Freedom Charity and advocate for all girls’ right to an education, will introduce the film and host a Q&A afterwards.
CCEA’s Moving Image Arts Showcase is Foyle Film Festival’s annual celebration of the talent, imagination and creativity of the MIA students. City of Derry Crystal Awards are presented to the winning students on the day as part of this special ceremony. As well as film screenings in Brunswick Moviebowl and Nerve Centre Cinema, the festival education programme takes films into schools. For the month of November, the Nerve Centre’s Creative Learning Centre team will give students a unique opportunity to use fun ICT skills in the classroom in order to explore this year’s festival themes. While FabLab staff will help primary pupils create their own clock (based on the Disney movie Inside Out) and guide post-primary students through designing and building their own small merchandise products. This year’s programme offers pupils the chance to work together to create an animation using Pixar’s animated film Inside Out as inspiration. Pupils will collaborate using characters from the film to help identify emotions from facial expressions and the appropriate responses to feelings. They will create a short animation exploring some of the emotions that drive us all.
Pupils will work together to make an alternative soundtrack to a sequence from Pixar’s Inside Out.
Pupils will work in small animation teams, using iPads, green screen technology and editing software to tell their story.
Using iPads, pupils will create their own emotional soundtrack using sound effects and stock music.

Through exploring the concept of a soundtrack, the pupils will change the feeling, emotion and pace of the original sequence, by replacing it with their own musical composition.

The Nerve Centre's Creative Centenaries project has created a suite of new, cutting-edge educational resources to address those events and more. Comic books have been created around the personal stories of two people caught up in both events. The Easter Rising is told from the point of view of Bangor woman Winifred Carney, personal secretary to James Connolly and one of the last people to leave the GPO during Easter week. 10
The Battle of the Somme story focuses on Lurgan-born William McFadzean, one of the first people from Ulster to receive the Victoria Cross for bravery and who died on the opening day of battle. Using curriculum-linked graphic novels and 3D style animations, students will delve into the historic events of 1916 and create their own digital comic books or radio-style podcasts based on the interactive tasks included in the resource. Pupils will compile short comics and posters highlighting the role of Cumann na mBan members during the Easter Rising or focus on encouraging men and women to enlist in the First World War. Inspired by Creative Centenaries resources, pupils will explore themes of enlistment and engagement in this digital design session.

On this occasion, after being picked on quite badly at school, he arrives home to find a spider in the bath and, out of character, he tortures it.

A Short Film About Fear tackles issues of bullying, fear, loneliness and isolation, and is specifically aimed at a young audience. The screening is followed by a workshop and a Q&A that will explore all the themes and issues that are highlighted in the film. A Short Film About Fear was financed by Northern Ireland Screen and produced by Brassneck Productions.

Students will use computer-controlled cutting machines to build their own personal clock designs. The showcase was conceived as a way of marking and celebrating the work produced by students undertaking the new Moving Image Arts subject. Since its introduction over a decade ago, this annual event has gone from strength to strength, and Foyle Film Festival is delighted to once again highlight and celebrate the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful City of Derry Crystal Awards for the best films. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition, which are Oscar® and BAFTA affiliated, in future years.

The luxury liner was sailing from New York to Liverpool when it was torpedoed by a German submarine, costing the lives of over 1,000 people. The Nerve Centre’s Creative Centenaries project has developed a new comic book detailing some of the personal stories of people caught up in the tragedy. The Key Stage 3 curriculum-linked resource encourages digital creativity tasks to explore the event, including an animation project to recreate the events leading up to and including the sinking. This workshop will see pupils will work in small animation teams to create a short piece exploring the event, using iPads to shoot, green screen and edit their stories.

If You Build It follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to rural Bertie County, the poorest in North Carolina, where they work with local high school students to help transform both their community and their lives. Living on credit and grant money and fighting a change-resistant school board, Pilloton and Miller lead their students through a year-long, full-scale design and build project that does much more than just teach basic
construction skills: it shows ten teenagers the power of design-thinking to reinvent not just their town but their own sense of what's possible. If You Build It offers a compelling and hopeful vision for a new kind of classroom in which students learn the tools to design their own futures. After watching the documentary students will be commissioned in groups to design and build small merchandise products utilising FabLab’s state-of-the-art digital fabrication machines including laser cutters, vinyl cutters, CNC milling and 3D printers. No previous technical experience is necessary as FabLab staff will be on hand to assist in both design and manufacturing stages.

Brian Maguire’s work positions art as an act of enquiry and activism and a demand for solidarity with those who are forgotten and voiceless. His insistence for social justice has drawn him to the margins of society and most recently to the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, where more than 5,000 people have been murdered over the past six years. Maguire’s exhibition with Void is an enquiry into the very public and often ritualistic display of the victims of violence in Juarez and its relationship to its so-called drugs war. When speaking about this work Maguire states: “My purpose is to show respect to the victims of violence, to remove all the easy rationalisations which excuse, cover over, and protects us from this reality. As the man is dead, the painting keeps his death in the present. The absence of justice demands this act.” Brian will discuss his work in Juarez and screen clips from Blood Rising, a documentary feature film, co-produced by Mark McLoughlin and Brian Maguire, that details Maguire’s portraiture and activism in Juárez since 1994.
