Welcome WELCOME to the 31st Foyle Film Festival Education Programme, which includes a diverse range of local and international films, presentations and hands-on workshops. The primary programme launches with the magical animation Smallfoot, an adventure for all ages, with original music and an all-star cast. Smallfoot turns a myth upsidedown when a bright young Yeti finds something he thought didn’t exist – a human. News of this “smallfoot” throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what other surprises might be waiting out there in the big world outside their snowy village. The post-primary programme includes a special screening of They Shall Not Grow Old, a documentary featuring never-before-seen footage to commemorate the centennial of the end of the First World War. Director Peter Jackson, best known for directing The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has created a new film using original footage from Imperial War Museums’ extensive archive, much of it previously unseen, alongside BBC and IWM interviews with servicemen who fought in the conflict. Footage has been colourised, converted to 3D and transformed with modern production techniques to present never-before-seen detail. “We’ve made a movie to show the human experience of the First World War… I hope it will give students a real sense of what it was like.” Director Peter Jackson
The Guardians pays tribute to the role of women during the First World War as they look after hearth and home while their menfolk fight and die on the battlefield. While, to mark the Centenary of the 1918 Suffrage Act, the exceptional life and career of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is highlighted in RBG. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) is a lifelong champion of women’s rights with a breathtaking legal legacy established over six decades. When she embarked on her law career in the 1950s she was one of only nine women in a class of several hundred at Harvard Law School, and the Dean accused those women of taking seats that should have gone to men! This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the launch of the Moving Image Arts (MIA) Showcase, in collaboration with CCEA, as an annual celebration of the talent, imagination and creativity of the MIA students. The festival will mark this important anniversary with the introduction of the Moving Images Arts Student Programme at this year’s Shorts To Features Conference. Directors: Karey Kirkpatrick, Jason Reisig. Cast: Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, Danny DeVito, LeBron James Gina Rodriguez. Duration: 1hr 49mins. Cert: PG. DISTRIBUTOR: WARNER BROS An animated adventure for all ages. News of this “smallfoot” throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what other surprises might be waiting out there in the big world outside their snowy village
“ It’s a playful inversion of the bigfoot legend, cautioning against unthinking compliance, championing curiosity and encouraging putting oneself in another’s shoes (or feet).” Sarah Wood, Screen International
“ I hope kids remember this (film) when they grow up. They can think of Smallfoot before they assume someone they don’t understand is a monster coming to get them… You can take your kids to see Smallfoot and have a healthy conversation after.” Fred Topel, Monsters and Critics
“ We’re…privy to existential and abstract concepts about courage, bravery, belief, purpose and social awareness. (Smallfoot) asks multiple questions like “who am I if not my job,” “is this all there is,” and “what’s my greater purpose?” The filmmakers make sure to emphasise that discovery and curiosity are precious commodities – fundamental qualities in child development, but also a reminder to adults.” Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction

SUITABLE FOR: YEARS 4–7 AREAS OF LEARNING: PDMU / THE ARTS / UICT / WAU / COMMUNICATION / LANGUAGE & LITERACY / MN DURATION: 2HRS MAXIMUM PLACES AVAILABLE: 30 COST: £3PP
This workshop offers pupils the chance to work together to create an animation using Warner Bros animated film Smallfoot as inspiration. Pupils will collaborate using characters from the film to tell the story of friendship and adventure. They will create a short animation looking at a twist on myths and legends, of a group of Yetis trying to prove the existence of the elusive creature known as the “Smallfoot”.
Pupils will work together to make an alternative soundtrack to a sequence from the Pixar animation INCREDIBLES 2.
Pupils will work in small animation teams, using iPads, green screen technology and editing software, to tell their story.
Through exploring the concept of a soundtrack, the pupils will replace the initial audio track with their own musical composition, which will in turn change the pace and feeling of the sequence. Using iPads, pupils will employ foley, audio loops and software instruments to create their own soundtrack as the Parr family try to restore the public’s trust in superheroes.

DISTRIBUTOR: CURZON ARTIFICIAL EYE Like a series of Monet paintings come to life, the historical drama The Guardians luxuriates in lush, widescreen images of the French countryside. World War I is raging elsewhere, but this segment of the country remains unspoiled and fertile – thanks to the hard work of the women who’ve been left behind to manage the family farm while their husbands, brothers and sons are off fighting, and sometimes not coming back.
“ This gentle but impactful Great War drama is as eye-wateringly beautiful as a Renoir landscape.” Phil De Semlyen, Time Out
“ As the priest says, at one gloomy Mass where the names of the latest war dead are declaimed to a congregation of stricken women, we should “take pity on those who weep”. The Guardians is a rewarding and rich film, which offers a delicately considered and often troubling insight into the lives of those left behind by history: those who, in the priest’s words, “still drain the bitter cup of life” while others march to their death.” Pamela Hutchinson, Sight & Sound 21

“ For women, but not only women, aspiring in the law, but actually in any field, this is an excellent manual on leadership.” Reviewer, Rotten Tomatoes
Throughout the 1970s, Ginsburg, as a lawyer for the A.C.L.U., argued a series of cases that essentially taught the then all-male Supreme Court that discrimination against women existed. Without those cases, it would probably still be legal to list employment ads by gender, to pay men and women differently for the same job, and to refuse to give family benefits to fathers. Consequently, the working world would be a very different place.
“ Gives viewers a deep and multi-layered sense of the times in which the subject lived and the cultural forces that she had to struggle against to achieve what she did.” David Zurawik, Baltimore Sun

Director: Stephen Chbosky. Cast: Julia Roberts, Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson, Izabela Vidovic. Duration: 1hr 53mins. Cert: PG I know I can't change the way I look. But maybe, just maybe, people can change the way they see... Wonder is the unforgettable story of August Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face. Born with facial differences that have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie is a regular child in every other way. He loves Star Wars and Minecraft. He has an aptitude for science and a wicked sense of humor. When Auggie enters the local fifth grade he becomes the most unlikely of heroes.
As his family, his new classmates, and the wider community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out. Wonder is a true modern classic, a life-changing story that will inspire kindness and acceptance in audiences everywhere. NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR®
“ Such is the film’s transformative power. It is a machine for creating empathy.” Christy Lemire, Roger Ebert

PACKAGE TWO
42 SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 & 4 (Years 13 & 14) / SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / POLITICS / LLW / PROBLEM SOLVING / PROMOTING THINKING SKILLS AND PERSONAL CAPABILITIES / CITIZENSHIP THEMES: SPORT / HEROISM / RACISM / PREJUDICE / COURAGE / RESTRAINT / LEADERSHIP USA. 2013. Director: Brian Helgeland. Cast: Jon Bernthal, Lucas Black, Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford. Duration: 2hrs 8mins. Cert: 12 Hero is a word that is often used in relation to sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. 42 tells the story of two men – the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey – whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous colour line. 26
But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing blatant racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking – ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics and paving the way for others to follow.

Director: Nora Twomey. Cast: Saara Chaudry, Soma Chhaya, Noorin Gulamgaus. Duration: 1hr 34mins. Cert: 12A From executive producer Angelina Jolie and Cartoon Saloon, the creators of the Academy® Award nominated The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, comes the highly-anticipated new feature based on Deborah Ellis' bestselling novel. Parvana is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom – and danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents, as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. Equal parts thrilling and enchanting, The Breadwinner is an inspiring and luminously animated tale about the power of stories to sustain hope and carry us through dark times. The Breadwinner brilliantly serves the important artistic purpose of making difficult subjects – such as war – accessible in the same poignant way that the brilliant Grave Of The Fireflies addressed difficult memories of wartime Japan.

“ Jewel-bright and heart-wrenching.” Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter
“ The animation is gorgeous in this Oscar-nominated feature about a young woman supporting her family under the Taliban in Kabul, but the real magic is in the storytelling.” Donald Clarke, Irish Times
