Foyle Film Festival’s Intercultural & AntiRacism programme is funded by the Department for Communities through Northern Ireland Screen. Venue partner is Brunswick Moviebowl.

Welcome Foyle Film Festival’s annual Intercultural & Anti Racism Programme offers primary, post-primary schools, colleges, community groups, and the general public, a programme of screenings and workshops exploring a wide-range of themes and issues. Now in its 13th year, the programme continues to raise awareness around issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment – including racist bullying. The objectives of this diverse programme are to broaden children’s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. The long-term objectives and outcomes are to promote tolerance and inclusion. Educational highlights include special screenings of Disney Pixar’s latest animated feature COCO. This charming film follows the life of young Miguel who dreams of becoming a great musician. COCO explores the cultural and personal impact of music and its ability to inspire, spark memories, and bring people closer together through an uplifting shared experience. While Ferdinand tells the story of a giant bull with an even bigger heart. Raised to be a fighter, Ferdinand is instead a rather gentle creature who longs to find a place where he can be the bull he is meant to be. Post-primary screenings include the inspirational movie Wonder – the unforgettable story of August Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face. Wonder is a true modern classic, a lifechanging story that will inspire kindness and acceptance in audiences everywhere. Other highlights of this year’s extended programme include classics such as Driving Miss Daisy, Mississippi Burning, and more contemporary films like A United Kingdom. While a special

screening of Suffragette marks 100 years since the Representation of the People Act, giving (some) women the right to vote. The festival also acknowledges the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns with screenings of Battle Of The Sexes, the true story of the 1973 highly-charged exhibition tennis match between the legendary Billie Jean King and former grand slam winner, and self-confessed ‘male chauvinist pig’ Bobby Riggs. While North Country is a fictional account of the first successful sexual harassment lawsuit. This year’s programme features a number of special screening events for groups and/or individuals living with physical and mental challenges such as older people and dementia sufferers. Films screening include The Sound Of Music, The King And I, LADY AND THE TRAMP and South Pacific. Public screenings at Brunswick Moviebowl include Sanctuary, which follows Larry, a young man with Down’s syndrome and Sophie, a young woman with epilepsy, and the challenges they face when they fall in love. Until very recently (pre-2017), as a response to abuse scandals, it was illegal for people with special needs to have a physical relationship outside of marriage. Families will enjoy screenings of MOANA and the original animated classic THE JUNGLE BOOK. While Parent and Baby screenings of Paddington 2 and Despicable Me 3 gives parents the opportunity to watch a movie without worrying about disturbing other guests. I hope you enjoy the bumper programme! Bernie McLaughlin, Director

Raised to be a fighter, Ferdinand is instead a lover and a rather gentle creature who longs to find a place where he can be the bull he is meant to be. When Ferdinand is mistaken for a dangerous beast he is captured and torn from his home and family. Determined to return to his family, he rallies his friends for the ultimate adventure. Inspired by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson’s beloved book “The Story of Ferdinand,” this has

always been a much bigger story than simply “be yourself.” First published in Spain in 1936, pre-Second World War, this story of a bull that rejected bullfighting as his ultimate destiny was interpreted not just as a personal statement but also as a cultural statement. Ferdinand was a revolutionary and Ferdinand the film truly brings that revolutionary to life. Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover. Nominated for an Oscar® and two Golden Globes. “It looks good, bears a social conscience and remains more or less true to the simple “be who you are” core that made Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson’s picture book so lovely.” UK Film Review

Sanctuary IRELAND | 2016 | DIRECTOR: LEN COLLINS | CAST: STEPHEN MARCUS, TARA BREATHNACH, AMY-JOYCE HASTINGS, CHRISTOPHER DUNNE. DURATION: 1HR 27MINS | CERT: 15 Until very recently (pre-2017), as a response to abuse scandals, it was illegal for people with special needs to have sex outside of marriage. It is against this backdrop that Larry, a young man with Down’s syndrome and Sophie, a young woman with epilepsy, fall in love and want to explore their physical relationship. On a day out to the cinema their care worker Tom arranges a hotel room so they can have some private time together. But the plan does not run as smoothly as anticipated. This unique love story exposes how society fails to address the issue of the romantic lives of individuals with special needs. The film tackles the subject from diverse angles, covering inclusion, perception, etc., but does so with humour and genuine feeling for those involved. Awarded the Dublin Film Critics Circle Award for Best Irish Feature Film.

“A devastating conclusion leaves us with an aching sadness and some quite profound questions about the basic human right to love the person we choose.” Wendy Ide, The Guardian “Films such as Sanctuary have a crucial role to play in our culture today; they open a dialogue and hopefully prompt debate of issues that should be of serious concern in any healthy society. To do so with the humour and compassion evident in Sanctuary is an achievement that will be appreciated by audiences across Ireland, and I expect, internationally.” Seán Crosson, Film Ireland

Won the Golden Bear at the 1994 Berlin Film Festival, and nominated for Seven Oscars®.

“Jim Sheridan skilfully interweaves a myriad of subplots and themes into a fast-paced, cohesive whole. He tells of the setup, the corrupt police investigation, the first trial with its various perjuries and cover-ups, fifteen years of prison life, and the second trial. Curiosity led to an amazing journey of discovery of this historical Indian man named Abdul Karim. Karim arrived from India to participate in Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, but surprisingly the two would form a close friendship that was frowned upon by those in the Queen’s household – including her own family. After the Queen’s death, all correspondence between the Queen and

USA | 1988 | DIRECTOR: ALAN PARKER | CAST: GENE HACKMAN, WILLEM DAFOE, FRANCES MCDORMAND | DURATION: 2HRS 8MINS | CERT: 18 Mississippi Burning is perhaps the most famous film about the civil rights movement in the 60s. The film is a crime-drama that is loosely based on the real-life murders of three civil rights workers in 1964 in Mississippi. The film chronicles two fictional FBI agents, Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) and Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman), as they try to discover the truth while investigating the murders. The backdrop of the civil rights struggle is perpetuated by the relationship between Ward and Anderson. Ward is a young liberal from the north, and he takes the “direct approach” with the investigation. Anderson, however, is a former Mississippi Sheriff, and quite familiar with the intricacies of race relations in the south.

Perhaps the most important legacy of the film is its accurate portrayal of life in the south during the civil rights movement. It was a volatile time in American History, and Mississippi Burning captures that with its many complexities.

“Feels like a movie made from the inside out, a movie that knows the ways and people of its small Southern city so intimately that, having seen it, I know the place I’d go for a cup of coffee and the place I’d steer clear from. This acute sense of time and place – rural Mississippi, 1964 – is the lifeblood of the film. More than any other film I’ve seen, this one gets inside the passion of race relations in America.” Roger Ebert, rogerebert.com

WEST GERMANY | 1974 | DIRECTOR: RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER CAST: EL HEDI BEN SALEM, BRIGITTE MIRA, BARBARA VALENTIN | DURATION: 1HR 30MINS | CERT: 15 | LANGUAGE: GERMAN/ARABIC WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES. With Fear Eats The Soul, director Rainer Werner Fassbinder pays tribute to his celluloid hero Douglas Sirk, with an updated version of Sirk’s 1955 movie All That Heaven Allows. Sirk’s classic movie follows a lonely, middle-class widow (Jane Wyman) who falls for a handsome young gardener (Rock Hudson). But her family and friends respond with disgust as her lover belongs to a lower social class. Fassbinder pushes the ideological boundaries even further by making his heroine’s lover not only younger, but Moroccan, in order to explore the racial tension inherent in post-war German society. His lonely widow is Emmi (Brigitte Mira), who meets Arab worker Ali (El Hedi ben Salem)

in a bar. They fall in love but are immediately shunned by her family and friends, who are disgusted she has married a foreigner. But, despite her love for Ali, Emmi demonstrates the racism that is ingrained in the German mind as she brags about his body and makes him show his muscles – thereby belittling and objectifying her own husband to her friends.

USA | 2005 | DIRECTOR: NIKI CARO | CAST: CHARLIZE THERON, FRANCES MCDORMAND, SISSY SPACEK, JEREMY RENNER, WOODY HARRELSON, RICHARD JENKINS, SEAN BEAN, ELLE PETERSON. DURATION: 2HRS 6MINS | CERT: 15 North Country follows the story of Josey Aimes – a mother who just wants a decent job so she can put food on the table and take care of her family. What she gets is threatened, insulted, ogled, fondled, belittled, attacked and called disparaging names. “Take it like a man,” is the callous response she gets from her male boss. But Josey decides to fight back. Charlize Theron plays Josey in the searing story of women who broke the gender barrier labouring in hazardous Minnesota iron mines. North Country is a fictional account of the first successful sexual harassment lawsuit. The director and writer based the film on the book “Class Action: The Story of Lois Jenson

28

and the Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law” by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler. The novel chronicles the real-life case of Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Company. Nominated for two Oscars®.

“North Country takes on the subject of institutionalised sexual harassment at its most primitive and bludgeoning… linking the cruelty of the mine to a community that places female sexuality at the heart of every problem. From the callous, compulsory gynaecological exam Josey is given by the company doctor to the shame her father feels over her situation, the film presents a culture riddled with regressive misogyny.” Henry K. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes; they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart breaking and inspirational.
