FRIDAY 15–SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2019 WWW.FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL.ORG

FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL Foyle Film Festival provides a unique opportunity for local cinemagoers to see many new films well in advance of the general release date; many of which will no doubt go on to be major awards contenders in 2020. As usual, the festival features classic movies, film industry talks, and special cinematic events for all the family. While the festival’s Oscar® and BAFTA affiliated Light In Motion Short Film Competition features the best short films and animations from around the world. This year’s festival launches with the Northern Ireland Premiere of Hope Gap, which brings together Academy® Award nominee Annette Bening and BAFTA winner Bill Nighy in Academy® Award nominated Writer/Director William Nicholson’s second feature. The film follows the disintegration of a marriage and the impact on the lives of the couple and their grown up son Jamie. While the Closing Night Gala is Irish film The Last Right - a comedy-drama road movie telling the story of a man bringing the body of a stranger home for burial. As always, FFF showcases the best in Irish cinema and some of this year’s highlights include Land Without God - an intimate portrait of a family coming to terms with decades of institutional abuse. Lost Lives is a major cinematic film inspired by the book of the same name, and marks the 50th Anniversary of the start of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Written over seven years by five journalists, it is a book that, uniquely, records the circumstances of every single death in the Northern Irish ‘Troubles.’

Also included in this year’s programme is the acclaimed documentary Gaza which brings the audience into the lives of the people trying to lead meaningful lives against the rubble of perennial conflict. Gaza has just been selected as Ireland’s entry for the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category in 2020. This year’s festival also features a strong music strand with screenings including Mystify: Michael Hutchence - a documentary that explores the troubled life of rock star Michael Hutchence, lead singer and songwriter of INXS. Hitsville: The Making Of Motown celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the legendary Motown Records with rare performances and behind the scenes footage. Music icons Elvis Presley and Judy Garland also feature in this year’s festival with Elvis: That’s The Way It Is marking the 42nd year of the King’s death, at age 42, and showcasing his return to live performance after his movie years. While a special 80th Anniversary screening of the classic Wizard Of Oz acknowledges the 50th year since Judy Garland’s death. On a much lighter note, the festival provides fun for all the family with special festive movie screenings and Santa Claus himself in attendance to read seasonal stories, dispense presents and collect Christmas letters to take back to the North Pole… We look forward to welcoming you at this year’s bumper festival. Bernie McLaughlin, Foyle Film Festival Director/Programmer

WITH SPECIAL INTRODUCTION BY OSCAR® & BAFTA NOMINATED WRITER/DIRECTOR WILLIAM NICHOLSON AND CAST MEMBER AIYSHA HART. Academy® Award nominee Annette Bening and BAFTA winner Bill Nighy come together in Academy® Award nominated Write/Director William Nicholson’s second feature. Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) have been married thirty-three years. When their son Jamie (Josh O’Connor) comes home to visit them in the fading seaside town where he grew up, Edward tells him that he plans to leave Grace, the next day. Hope Gap tracks the unravelling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a resolution, of sorts. It’s tender, it’s funny and above all, true. There are no easy answers, no simple paths to redemption, but in the end, it is a story of hope and survival. Commenting on the film Director William Nicholson has said, “This really is a very personal story. It’s loosely inspired by what happened to me and my parents and is about the disintegration of their marriage, and a son trying to save the situation.” UK.2019. DIRECTOR: WILLIAM NICHOLSON. CAST: ANNETTE BENING, BILL NIGHY, JOSH O’CONNOR, AIYSHA HART, NICHOLAS BURNS, ROSE KEEGAN. DURATION: 1HR.40MINS. CERT: 12A

From award winning documentarian Lauren Greenfield (Generation Wealth, The Queen of Versailles), The Kingmaker puts the spotlight on Imelda Marcos with an analysis of the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency. To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country (not shoes!!!). In an age when fake news manipulates elections, Imelda’s comeback story serves as a dark fairytale. Nominated for the Grierson Documentary Award at the London Film Festival

BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL When the Taliban puts a bounty on Afghan director Hassan Fazili’s head, he is forced to flee with his wife and two young daughters. Capturing their uncertain journey, Fazili shows first-hand the dangers facing refugees seeking asylum and the love shared between a family on the run. Entirely shot on three mobile phones…

“An existential road film with life-or-death stakes, Midnight Traveler presents a ground-floor portrayal of the refugee crisis that smartly privileges experience over solutions.” VIKRAM MURTHL, ROGER EBERT

Hassan Fazili’s Midnight Traveler might be the most compelling argument for the iPhone as the best available vehicle for vérité filmmaking. Three different iPhones capture the danger and uncertainty inherent in such a voyage: Fazili and his family are often forced to sleep in the woods or in abject housing conditions while facing prejudice because of their refugee status. Oscar® nominee Feras Fayyad (Last Men In Aleppo) delivers an unflinching story of the Syrian war with his powerful new documentary, The Cave. For besieged civilians, hope and safety lie underground inside the subterranean hospital known as the Cave, where pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballor and her colleagues Samaher and Dr. Alaa have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. Following the women as they contend with daily bombardments, chronic supply shortages and the ever-present threat of chemical attacks, The Cave paints a stirring portrait of courage, resilience and female solidarity. BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL

Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz), a naïve young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City, doesn’t think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta (Isabelle Huppert), an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness. Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly grows closer to widowed Greta. The two become fast friends, but Greta’s maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as Frances discovers that nothing in Greta’s life is what it seems in this suspense thriller directed by Academy® Award winner Neil Jordan.

Joanna Hogg’s fourth movie ends with a glance to camera that comes like a gut punch. Hogg’s work has probed bourgeois lives with memorable clench and squirm, but this feels like so much more. The story of a young film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) falling in love with a mysterious older man (Tom Burke), The Souvenir has wide emotional appeal; its situations unposed and dialogue often improvised. Hogg frames and paces it to create one of the year’s outstanding film experiences.

MARKING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF JUDY GARLAND

SID & JUDY WEDNESDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 7PM

“That I should feel so completely invested in this documentary is down to the skill of the director in recreating her story in a way that felt so vivid and immersive.” CATERINA BENINCASA, BINA007 MOVIES

BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL

Sid & Judy is an emotional documentary about the latter half of Judy Garland’s career, as seen through the autobiography of her third husband Sid Luft. He meets and marries Garland shortly after her ignominious sacking from MGM, addicted to pills, with a reputation of being unreliable. Cusack is Dutch Albert, a quintessential bad guy who figures prominently in Ivan Kavanagh’s old-fashioned Western Never Grow Old. Hirsch also gives a powerful performance as the film’s hero, Patrick Tate, an Irish immigrant who has settled in the Oregon territory with his French wife and their two young daughters. Patrick works as an undertaker, normally a lucrative profession in the untamed Wild West.

But business is down since the fire-and-brimstone Preacher Pike has banned alcohol, prostitution and gambling, three things that pretty much guarantee a steady stream of bodies to bury. Patrick’s fortunes change dramatically with the arrival of Dutch Albert and his gang. Dutch buys the local hotel and turns it into a well-stocked brothel. Initially Patrick goes along, doing his best to keep to himself. But as the town becomes transformed into a hellhole of violence and moral corruption, Patrick feels compelled to take action…

MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE

TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER @ 9PM NERVE CENTRE

No one who loves music will want to miss this thrilling film, which is both a revealing look at a key moment in American musical and social history, and an invaluable record of one of America’s greatest artists doing what she did best.

The beautiful yet tragic love story between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. Their love began on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra in 1960 as part of a bohemian community of foreign artists, writers and musicians. The film follows their relationship from the early days, a time of ‘free love’ and open marriage, to how their love evolved when Leonard became a successful musician. It was in Hydra in 1968 that director Nick Broomfield, then aged 20, first met Marianne, and introduced him to Leonard Cohen’s music and also encouraged Nick to make his first film. Marianne and Leonard’s was a love story that would continue for the rest of their lives.

The film debut of Jean Luc Godard started the French new wave of filmmaking - recognised as one of the most stylish and influential movements in film history. Cigarettes, hats, sunglasses and determined unconformity make Michel Poiccard (Belmondo) a true cinematic icon.

A unique bond develops between the unlikely duo, but the two prove no match for the urban jungle of Manhattan.

Playing against the stunning Jean Seberg he smokes his way through a series of sexy Gallic exchanges in the ultra cool Paris of the 1960’s.

Featuring landmark performances from its two leads and an iconic John Barry soundtrack, Midnight Cowboy is a gritty yet warm story of an affectionate friendship between two drifters in a decaying late-1960s New York.

DIRECTORS GERARD MANNIX FLYNN AND MAEDHBH MCMAHON WILL INTRODUCE THE FILM AND TAKE PART IN A POSTSCREENING DISCUSSION An intimate portrait of a family coming to terms with decades of institutional abuse and the impact it has had and continues to have on their lives. The film examines the legacy of Institutional abuse by the Irish Church and State over the last century. The story follows the writer, Gerard Mannix Flynn, together with generations of his family who for the first time, speak openly together about their childhood traumatic experience of being removed from the family home and being incarcerated in children’s homes and industrial institutions run by religious catholic orders. Here the children worked the land from dawn until dusk, ill-clothed, half-starved day in day out. The regime was merciless. It focuses on the impact that violence had and is still having on them and their class. Why did this happen? How does one exit the trauma buried deep in the bones of generations? Is it possible to walk away free? And will they let you?

“(A) powerful evocation of an individual and a family harrowed by the suffering they endured in various institutions in Ireland…” CATRIONA CROWE, IRISH EXAMINER

Flynn leads us through the story of modern structured slavery. He becomes the receiver of the intimate tales of his family. He listens, witnesses and carefully archives their stories within his own story. This compelling film highlights a family’s personal journey into the dark side of the Irish State.
