WELCOME We’re delighted to present our Spring Cinema Programme, offering you an exciting choice of contemporary, foreign language and documentary films to enjoy over the next few weeks. Following ‘Oscar® Season’ we bring together the big winners of 2016, including Lenny Abraham’s outstanding and disturbing Room, the musical revolution featured in Straight Outta Compton, and the brilliant brutality of The Revenant and The Hateful Eight. Although narrowly missing out on an Oscar® win, Charlotte Rampling gives the performance of a lifetime in 45 Years playing a woman whose long, and seemingly successful, marriage is threatened by a ghost from her husband’s past.
Intrigue, greed, corruption and cover up are themes that feature heavily throughout the programme – from a behind the scenes look at that unique symbol of Russian artistic expression, the Bolshoi Ballet (Bolshoi Babylon), to the US real estate crash of 2007 (The Big Short), and the blacklisting and jailing of actors and writers for their political beliefs in the 1950s (Trumbo). Pre-book your tickets now at www.nervecentre.org

The Bolshoi. A symbol of Russia, a national treasure and one of the most famous institutions in the world. Recently, however, the theatre has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons: intrigue, personal attacks and management changes have created lurid headlines. Now, for the first time and with unparalleled access, the theatre directors have allowed the backstage process to be documented. “Stunning. The real life Black Swan.“ Caroline Frost, HuffPostUK “A veritable hotbed of scheming, backstabbing and favouritism.” The Hollywood Reporter

WEDNESDAY 20 APRIL @ 8PM
THE AMERICAN DREAMER USA.1971. Director(s): L.M. Kit Carson, Lawrence Schiller. Cast: Dennis Hopper, L.M. Carson, Lois Ursone. Duration: 1hr.30mins. Cert: PG Even though The American Dreamer was made in 1971, it is tempting to regard the film as an artefact of the Sixties, in part because Easy Rider remains a cinematic landmark of the era. Certainly much of what Schiller and Carson captured with their cameras plays today like a string of Sixties clichés: the flower-power clothing and hairstyles, the hippie commune surroundings, the would-be guru spouting pseudoprofundities, the paranoia
about the establishment. But eras are notoriously hard to define, and these phenomena say more about Dennis Hopper than about the time in which the film was made. Most people were living ordinary lives while the events filmed by Schiller and Carson were unfolding in the desert of New Mexico. “An amusing, compelling, enlightening study of Dennis Hopper’s healthy young ego…” HK and Cult Film News
Fans of Terence Davies’ heartfelt ode to his hometown Liverpool in Of Time And The City will be drawn to Innocence Of Memories, from fellow British filmmaker Grant Gee. A slow-paced yet mesmerising documentary, it interweaves an epic romance and nostalgic love letter to Istanbul to shed light on the past, present and future of its setting. Part alternative travelogue, part meditation on love and loss, it explores the nature of a great city as a living, breathing entity and how memory is inextricably linked to time and place. Gee collaborated in the writing of his latest endeavor with Nobel Prize-winning Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk, who also features throughout. “A haunting nocturnal piece…” Jonathan Romney, The Observer

Twentyfive years later Libby meets Lyle (Nicholas Hoult), the head of a group of true-crime enthusiasts, The Kill Club, who convince her to re-examine the events of that night. As new memories and old suspects flood back into her life, Libby begins to question her own testimony and sets out to discover the truth of her tragic past. “Charlize Theron as Libby is electrifying. The film follows the final day of the director’s life as he ponders his plans for the future in the wake of his controversial final movie Salo.
“The conjuring of a spellbinding narrative of Pasolini’s last day on earth takes the audience from childhood memories, via graphic film clips, to a comet following, unfinished future.” Anne-Katrin Titze, EyeForFilm.co.uk

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON USA.2015. Director: F. Gary Gray. Cast: Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr. Duration: 2hrs.27mins. In the late 1980s, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels, armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent, stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today. Nominated for an Oscar® “Straight Outta Compton is near note-perfect. It is mesmerising from start to finish; the timeless beats bang, the story engrosses from the outset, and this new cast is virtually faultless.” Paul Heath, The Hollywood News

Duration: 1hr.19mins. Cert: 12A Filmmakers discuss how Francois Truffaut’s 1966 book “Cinema According to Hitchcock” influenced their work. Hitchcock/Truffaut is a gentle but revealing documentary, over 50 years after the exhaustive interviews conducted by François Truffaut. Concentrating on reevaluating Hitchcock’s work and the context surrounding both directors, just as much as the interviews themselves, makes it really quite comprehensive. Stellar contributors, like directors Scorsese and Assayas, aren’t afraid to both praise and criticise Hitchcock, reminding us that he was not always considered the huge success of today. “A fantastic and instructive piece of work, essential viewing for true cinephiles.” Sound On Sight
