25th FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL Wednesday 21 - Sunday 25 November 2012 The Foyle Film Festival marks its MILESTONE 25th year with a high quality programme of feature films, workshops, competition screenings, outreach and special events. Over the last 25 years the Foyle Film Festival has become renowned for attracting top industry professionals to the city. Past guests have included high profile names such as: Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Neil Jordan, Wim Wenders, Kenneth Branagh, Roddy Doyle, Stephen Frears, Jimmy McGovern - to name but a few. This year is no exception as the festival launches with the Irish Premiere of ASHES the latest film from Director Mat Whitecross (The Road To Guantanamo, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll). The movie stars Ray Winstone (Nil By Mouth, Quadrophenia, Sexy Beast) and Jim Sturgess (One Day, Fifty Dead Men Walking). Director Mat Whitecross and the stars of
the film Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess will attend the Irish Premiere of ASHES to launch the 25th Foyle Film Festival on Wednesday 21 November at the Brunswick Moviebowl. ASHES was excutive-produced by Coldplay. New Irish Cinema is well represented with Jump. Filmed in and around DerryLondonderry, the film has received rave reviews. Also screening is Good Vibrations, which charts the life of Terri Hooley, the DJ instrumental in bringing the punk movement to Belfast and for releasing The Undertones’ legendary single ‘Teenage Kicks’. The directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn will be in attendance. To coincide with this screening, the Undertones will play a special gig in the Nerve Centre as part of this year’s Festival Club. In 1999 the Foyle Film Festival celebrated a milestone phase as it became an Oscar® affiliated festival - one of only a handful of such events to enjoy this honour. While this year’s festival highlights milestone events in politics by taking a digital journey through the peace process, from its earliest days to the recent historic meeting
and handshake between The Queen and Sinn Fein’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games celebrated the best of human achievement and endeavour. The success of the games inspired millions of people around the world, and provided a lasting legacy for future generations. The example of the London Olympics 2012 serves as an inspiration for our own city as we move towards hosting the City Of Culture 2013. The Foyle Film Festival is the flagship project of the Nerve Centre - Northern Ireland’s leading creative media arts centre spearheading a diverse range of arts events, cutting edge projects, training opportunities, state-of-the-art production facilities, and Creative Learning Centres in Derry~Londonderry and Belfast. The festival acknowledges the talent, expertise, and dedication, of the management and staff of the Nerve Centre as a driving force behind the development and enduring success of the Foyle Film Festival. Directed by Mat Whitecross and executiveproduced by Coldplay, ASHES is a contemporary film noir that follows the difficult reconciliation between Frank Barron (Ray Winstone) and his son James (Jim Sturgess).
James tracks his estranged father down to a hospital secure unit and discovers he is suffering from memory loss. James is anxious to take his father back to be with his family, but is informed by the doctor that Frank is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Frank is being confined to hospital for his own good as the disease is making him prone to violent outbursts. Touched by the emotional impact of seeing his father in such a state, James breaks him out of hospital, and the two men go on a road trip with a difference. The journey proves difficult for James, who has to cope with Frank’s hallucinations and mood swings, while trying to hide from the police. As they travel, glimpses of the old Frank emerge, and gradually the two begin to bond. But both men are weighed down by the ghosts of the past, and neither is quite how they seem on the surface… Director Mat Whitecross and the stars of ASHES, Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess, will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in an after screening discussion.

Close-up on MAT WHITECROSS: After working as an editor on 9 Songs and Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, Mat Whitecross codirected the documentary Road to Guantanamo with Michael Winterbottom, winning the Silver Bear at Berlin for Best Director in 2006. He went on to make music videos for various artists, including Coldplay, Take That and Jay-Z. Mat’s feature film Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, a biography of the life of musician Ian Dury, received wide critical acclaim - winning an Evening Standard British Film Award, as well as nominations from BAFTA, the British Independent Film Awards and the London Critics Circle Film Awards. Mat’s latest projects include Spike Island and Going Mad In Hollywood. Davis is the original ‘Baby Jane’ - a young child vaudeville star who is so successful she even has a doll marketed on her. Her shy sister Blanche (Crawford) can only watch on in consuming envy as the sickly Baby Jane gets all the rapturous attention. But as happens in showbiz, Jane does not grow into a successful star, unlike her ugly duckling sister who becomes the toast of Hollywood. But Blanche’s career is brutally cut short as a tragic car accident leaves her crippled. Held responsible for this is the washed up Jane who’s so drunk she can’t even remember what happened that night. It’s the crux of the film and director Robert Aldrich leaves the details deliberately hazy as we move forward in time to the two sisters living in a crumbling mansion. Davis is cruelly made up having lost all her beauty and Crawford is a virtual recluse, upstairs in her wheelchair. Davis is by now so consumed with bitterness, regret and booze that she takes it out on Crawford in
an escalating campaign of terror. Plenty of these twists were later to be duplicated in Misery.

The Director, Danny Garcia, will introduce this special screening and take part in a Q&A afterwards. The Rise And Fall Of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and play, interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well, and traces the downward trajectory of a band who were at one point “the biggest band in the world”. Over 90 minutes the documentary paints the fascinating inside story of rivalry, treachery, betrayal, and the internal band dynamics and managerial interferance that ultimately led The Clash to self-destruct.

He has since contributed to a number of publications, including the US magazine High Times. In the early 2000’s Danny Garcia developed a series of documentaries for BTV (Barcelona’s own TV station) depicting the local Hip Hop scene in chapters: b-boys, graffiti artists, MC’s, DJ’s and producers. It was thanks to this experience that Danny took on producing and directing his own films. The Rise And Fall Of The Clash marks his first major production, a film that deals with the obscure end of one of Danny’s childhood favourite bands, and one that took him on a journey to the core of the band’s camp in West London while searching for the inside story.

He also faces his own crisis of conscience when he discovers that Tim has fallen in love with Molly Phelan, a married woman. The film was made by Amanda Waring when her mother, the acclaimed actress Dame Dorothy Tutin, was being treated for leukaemia and Amanda witnessed the devastating effect that the lack of compassionate care had on her mind, body, and spirit. Amanda is an English actress, film director, producer, highly respected speaker and passionate campaigner for improving care. A representative from the Alzheimer’s Society of Northern Ireland will take part in an after screening discussion on the themes and issues explored in this documentary. Alzheimer’s and dementia are a reality for an increasing and often unseen population. Though well intentioned, many nursing homes are not equipped to fully meet the needs of these residents. We are left with several questions without any real or comforting answers: How do I want to age? What can we do for our loved ones? Can we do better? ALIVE INSIDE investigates these questions and the power music has to awaken deeply locked memories. The film follows Dan Cohen, a social worker, who decides on a whim to bring iPods to a nursing home. To his and the staff’s surprise many residents suffering from memory loss seem to “awaken” when they are able to listen to music from their past. A sympathetic but searching portrait of Frank Ryan (1902-1944), IRA activist in Ireland, International Brigade Volunteer in Spain and Nazi collaborator in Berlin. Ryan enters a Faustian pact with a Nazi regime he believes will assist in forging a united Ireland. His collaboration is
justified by the republican motto: “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.” But the former radical and internationalist pays a heavy price for this pact. The film raises important questions about the collaboration between the IRA and the Nazis in World War II. It opens up a long suppressed debate about Irish neutrality in that war. Drawing upon Ryan’s correspondence and using a rich mix of period archive combined with live action – with a striking portrayal of Frank Ryan by Dara Devaney - the film makers tell a story of tragic proportions and probes the enigma that was Frank Ryan.
The screening will be introduced by the Director Desmond Bell and followed by a Panel Discussion.
For many viewers, Denis Murray was the face of the Peace Process in Ireland. As the BBC’s Ireland correspondent from 1988 until his retirement in 2008, Murray reported on the pivotal moments on the path to an agreed settlement here. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Foyle Film Festival Denis Murray will take us on an illustrated TV tour of the Peace Process, presenting its iconic moments and giving an insight into the stories behind the stories as we saw them presented on the news. Through this tour we will get an insight into the challenges and realities of reporting contentious history as it happens in the age of 24 hour news. The talk will conclude with a Q & A. Friday 23 Nov | 2pm FOYLE FILM SCHOOL 2012 NERVE CENTRE 1 The very first Foyle Film School took place over five days in September 2012, offering masterclasses by some of Ireland’s leading filmmakers. This initiative, a partnership between the University of Ulster and the Nerve Centre was free to the public, and aimed at both the budding filmmaker and the curious cinema goer. From directing to editing, from producing to sound recording, there was something for everyone interested in the journey from idea to screen. The Masterclasses were delivered by local talent working on the international stage in Broadcast Television and Film Production. Director Brian Henry Martin, producer Margo Harkin, cinematographer Mark McCauley, sound recordist Liz Green, and editor John Martin, described how their roles separately and together combine to bring compelling stories to the screen. Following the week of Masterclasses a group of selected students set out to produce two short documentaries on the theme of ‘Milestones’, which will be premiered during this year’s 25th Foyle Film Festival. Funded by the Garfield Weston Trust and organised by the School of Media, Film & Journalism at the University of Ulster in partnership with the Nerve Centre, the Foyle Film School allowed young people with limited experience of film-making to produce and publicly exhibit their films.
SWEETHEART This documentary follows Cavan man Paul Reilly on his journey to research and publish a book on the history of Church of Ireland church in Shercock and its surrounding area. This significant milestone in an ordinary man’s life is made even greater in scope with all proceeds from the book being donated to his daughters’ school which was set up for children with severe/profound learning disabilities, moderate learning disabilities and for pupils with autism. NERVE CENTRE 1 NERVE CENTRE 1 Lisa McGee is a stage and screenwriter. She was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, and studied for a BA (Hons) degree in Drama at Queen’s University Belfast. She was writer on attachment with the Royal National Theatre in London in 2006. Her plays include JUMP and the Stewart Parker and Blackburn award-winning Girls and Dolls. She has written for several television shows including Totally Frank for Channel 4 and The Things I Haven’t Told You for the BBC, as well as episodes of the television series Being Human for BBC Three. She is also the creator of the RTÉ television series Raw.
Lisa comes to the Foyle Film Festival to share her experiences of being a writer and how to get started. A unique opportunity to find out what it takes to make it as a successful writer for students interested in careers in theatre and television.
This is a call to shorts filmmakers in how to utilize your skills, ideas and short films in finding your audience. Opportunities for the filmmaker working in short form are expanding with the plethora of platforms available as well as the current appetite for cross platform output by the terrestrial and digital broadcasters. The festival circuit is not the only place to show your work as a shorts filmmaker and the short drama is not the only form of short film. But how do we utilize these opportunities? Using the work she made in fine art; art video; as a producer and writer/director of short films; and as a filmmaker currently making drama, music videos and fashion films, Carol Murphy will use this 2 and a half hour workshop to look at how the filmmaker can find their audience - from the festival circuit to television strands (like Random Acts on Channel 4).

About Carol Murphy: Carol Murphy is writer/director for film. She comes from a background in fine art, film theory and film journalism and also writes for theatre. Carol teaches short film screen writing at Queens University Open Learning. She runs a series of specialist film writing classes called Film Niche and teaches on another series of Saturday morning creative industry classes for teenagers called Teenage Kicks, both at Blick Studios in Belfast. Murphy is also teaching on the Take Over Festival at the Queens Film Theatre in Belfast where she also presents general releases on a regular basis.

In this David and Goliath story for the 21st century, a group of proud Scottish homeowners take on a celebrity tycoon. At stake is one of Britain’s very last stretches of wilderness. American billionaire Donald Trump has bought up hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, best known to movie-lovers as the setting for the 1983 classic film Local Hero. And like the American oil tycoon played by Burt Lancaster, he needs to buy out a few more locals to make the deal come true. In a land swimming with golf courses, Trump
is going to build two more – alongside a 450-room hotel and 1,500 luxury homes. The trouble is, the land he has purchased occupies one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive stretches of coast, described by one leading scientist as Scotland’s Amazon rain forest. And the handful of local residents don’t want it destroyed. After the Scottish Government overturns its own environmental laws to give Trump the green light, the stage is set for an extraordinary summer of discontent, as the bulldozers spring into action. Water and power is cut off, land disputes erupt, and some residents have thousands of tonnes of earth piled up next to their homes. Complaints go ignored by the police, who instead arrest the film’s director, Anthony Baxter. Local exasperation comes to a surreal head as the now “Dr” Trump scoops up an honorary doctorate from a local university, even as his tractors turn wild, untouched dunes into fairways. Told entirely without narration, You’ve Been Trumped captures the cultural chasm between the glamorous, jet-setting and media savvy Donald Trump and a deeply rooted Scottish community. Sun 25 Nov | 10am-4pm INTRODUCTORY ‘STEREO-3D-IN-A-DAY’ WORKSHOP with Neil Richards from The Digital Film Company NERVE CENTRE Venue The 25th Foyle Film Festival has joined forces with The Digital Film Company to provide an introductory workshop in what’s set to be one of the biggest growth areas in TV and film production over the next few years. According to Neil Richards, “Up to now, stereo 3D has been the realm of big budget feature films and blue-chip TV productions, but all that is changing with the move to internet delivery and widespread use of mobile platforms for viewing. The demand for 3D content looks set to explode now that 3D TVs cost no more than conventional sets and “glasses-free” tablets, laptops and computers are becoming widespread. The technology is changing at the production and post-production end too, with the arrival of inexpensive 3D cameras, rigs,
and stereoscopic software editing now possible on Mac and PC computers. Production costs have fallen as equipment becomes cheaper and experience has been gained within the industry.” This introductory 3D workshop covers basic stereo 3D principles, terminology and human physiological constraints leading to an explanation of the factors which produce good and bad 3D viewing experiences. Stereo 3D technology, standards, cameras, displays and 3D cinema are then explained. Emphasis in the last half of the workshop is on hands-on filming with the footage reviewed live on 3D TVs. If you want to record your masterpiece, then bring a pen drive.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Industry professionals such as independent producers and directors, camera operators, DOP’s, Independent film makers and documentary TV makers. This one day workshop will also be accessible for anyone with a general interest in this rapidly emerging technology.

Filmmaker & Lecturer, Carol Murphy will provide a special introduction to this screening, and take part in a Q&A afterwards. Edward Scissorhands tells the story of Edward; a boy discovered living alone in a dark mansion on the top of a mountain. Edward is the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can replace Edward’s scissorhands with conventional hands. The nurturing Peg is protective of Edward and invites him to come live with her family. One of the film’s jokes is that Peg’s job as an Avon lady makes her an outsider like Edward. Although her life on the surface resembles the rest of the town’s, she is the one who
embraces Edward and accepts his difference. The world in which Edward finds himself is a model of dull conformity and although he is initially accepted by the community, as an entertaining oddball, they cruelly reject him when things go wrong. Edward’s experience mirrors director Tim Burton’s own struggle to survive the bland, conformist world of his youth. Burton felt isolated and misunderstood, and Edward emerged as a character: “who wants to touch but can’t, who was both creative and destructive… It was the feeling that your image and how people perceive you are at odds with what is inside you.” - Tim Burton

The Foyle Film Festival established this unique award a number of years ago with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from City of Derry Crystal, and this annual event has gone from strength to strength. The Foyle Film Festival presents these unique awards to students during the annual Festival in Derry/Londonderry, and also during the Cinemagic Festival in Belfast. CCEA’s Moving Image Arts is a modern and dynamic GCSE and A-Level subject that gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their creativity and digital literacy through the production of their own films and animations. The festival is delighted to once again celebrate and highlight the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful City
of Derry Crystal Awards for the best films of the year. The 2012 event will also showcase a competitive GCSE entry for the first time since the introduction of the new course in 2009. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers from all over Northern Ireland. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition - which is Oscar® affiliated - in the not too distant future.
About Carol Murphy: Carol Murphy is writer/director for film. She comes from a background in fine art, film theory and film journalism and also writes for theatre. Carol teaches short film screen writing at Queens University Open Learning. She runs a series of specialist film writing classes called Film Niche and teaches on another series of Saturday morning creative industry classes for teenagers called Teenage Kicks, both at Blick Studios in Belfast. Murphy is also teaching on the Take Over Festival at the Queens Film Theatre in Belfast where she also presents general releases on a regular basis.

THE UNDERTONES NERVE CENTRE Venue Music lover and DJ extraordinaire John Peel, who died in 2004, had one pop song that he regarded above all others. That song ‘Teenage Kicks’, the first single released by the Undertones, was played at his funeral, and its opening line - ‘Teenage dreams, so hard to beat’ - is inscribed on his gravestone. But what made John Peel - and thousands of others - think they were so special? Was it that no one would ever believe that a band from Derry could sound like they did? Influenced by the New York Dolls, the Ramones (especially), 1960s girl groups like the Shangri-Las and psychedelic outfits like the Chocolate Watch Band, was it that they were powered by the two guitars and song writing acumen of the O’Neill brothers or was it that they were a wonderful paradox: a brilliant and apparently apolitical band from one of the most political places in the seventies. A recent BBC documentary strived to answer these questions and also managed to unearth “cousin Kevin”. But the simple answer to why The Undertones have managed to maintain their
musical relevance is simply to be found on the set list from any for their live shows. Song after brilliant song hits home and reminds us why we started to listen to music in the first place. The Undertones return to the Nerve Centre on the 23rd of November to mark the 25th Foyle Film Festival on the same night as we screen the movie GOOD VIBRATIONS which charts the life story of Terri Hooley, the DJ and record store owner who was instrumental in bringing the punk movement to Belfast and launching the careers of legendary bands such as The Undertones, Rudi, and The Outcasts.
