WELCOME

FOREWORD

Evelyn Hassard, Chair

Gloria Hunniford, Presenter

Welcome to FLive 2013, the 5th celebration of arts and music in Enniskillen. Building on the huge success of the 2012 festival, this exciting and inclusive celebration has developed into an annual event. Having been involved with the festival since 2006, I am honoured to be Chairperson in a year that has been so successful for Fermanagh as a whole, when we hosted the world leaders of the G8 summit and TV footage of our lovely County was beamed worldwide. Once again this year, we have a programme of very interesting, high quality events in store for you, many of which are free. Highlights must include our local talent-Richard Pierce, Robert Northridge, The Big Brass Swing Band and Pat McManus - as well as international names such as David Meade and Vladimir Jablokov (yes, he is appearing again!) In addition to the many exhibitions throughout the town, I must also mention the ever popular Dragon Parade and Cinemagic, who are coming to Enniskillen for the first time to scatter some of their magic dust in a series of film revue workshops for children-not to be missed by the young photographers and fim-makers of tomorrow. I would like to thank our main supporters, Fermanagh District Council, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The Big Lottery Fund as well as all our local sponsors without whom we could not present this excellent programme. We have worked hard to put together a varied and uplifting programme of events and we look forward to your support and enjoyment. Come and be part of it! Evelyn Hassard

I am so disappointed that I can’t be there for the Fermanagh Festival because it is a place very dear to my heart, having spent many years to and from Fermanagh at the weekends with all my family. I am so encouraged to see that FLive have organised such a comprehensive arts festival embracing something to appeal to all ages.

Fermanagh as a county is very rich in every sense of the word - magnificent geographically, culturally and with the friendliest and warmest of people. I know that anyone who attends or takes part in the Festival will have the most glorious and satisfying experience. Gloria Hunniford

BOB QUICK & THE BIG BRASS SWING BAND www.FLive.org.uk/Bob From Spirituals to Swing Ardhowen Theatre Friday 4th October, 8pm, £7/£5 Concession The Big Brass Swing Band does exactly what it says on the can. It combines the power of a brass band with the refinement of a jazz combo. The band has 4 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 euphoniums, 4 trombones, an Eb bass, a full rhythm section and 4 singers. It’s big, it’s brassy and it swings. The brass players are an amalgam of 2 bands from the North west; they come from the fabulous Derry based Britannia band and from the mighty Strabane Concert Brass [this year’s N.I. Senior champions]. The sound of this line up is similar to a traditional Jazz Big Band but with a touch of “Ee by gum” to soften the edges. The rhythm section of Paul Maquire, Ronan McKee and Mike McGinnity are simply the best there is. Gareth Devine from Strabane is the male vocalist. The band has 3 female vocalists - Katrina Gormley, Jenny Grant and Gerarda Mc Cann. All are professionally trained singers and work with Bob Quick for the W.E.L.B. music service. The show traces the history of popular music from its folk roots in Ireland and Scotland and follows it through the influence of African music. The story is then influenced by the Blues, then into Swing and the Big Band era of the Rat Pack. The finale is an Elvis spectacular. The show is written and arranged by deputy director of the W.E.L.B. music service Bob Quick. Bob studied trombone at London’s Royal Academy of Music before playing with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the BBC Northern Ireland and Ulster Orchestras. In 2005 he performed the Irish premier of a new Trombone Concerto [Earth’s Fury] in Christchurch, Dublin. He has appeared 3 times as the featured soloist at the Cork International Trombone Conference. This year he opened the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival with his Big Band.

YANKEE PANKY Ardhowen Theatre - Gallery Bar www.FLive.org.uk/Yankee Friday 4th & Saturday 5th October 10.30pm, £10 Selling out at our 2010 and 2012 Festivals, Jeanne Munroe (Musical Director, pianist) and Melissa McKeague (vocalist) return once again with a brave new Yankee Panky programme, featuring a musical alchemy of Stephen Sondheim, William Bolcom, Annie Lennox, Irving Berlin, Peter Winkler, and Tom Lehrer. Yankee Panky is an irreverent musical revue, gleaned largely from the world of American musical theatre. Like shiny beads on a hot dancer, the songs are threaded together by themes: relationships, aging, and this time, the change(s) of life. With only two shows at the 2013 Festival, tickets are sure to go quickly. Hard to describe, but harder to forget, Yankee Panky puts one in mind of a fine wine; “Over-ripeness coupled with some tartness!” 4

COUNTY C OU NT Y F FERMANAGH E UN FE

ROBERT NORTHRIDGE Flora of County Fermanagh The lakes and hills of Fermanagh provide beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities that attract many visitors to the county every year. Until the publication of this book, there has been no account of the interesting and varied flowering plant life that so greatly enhances the enjoyment of this relatively uncrowded corner of north-west Ireland. This magnificent, colourful flora and its informative text describes the findings of botanical field recorders over the past 200 years. It concentrates, however, on the period from 1975 to 2010, when the major survey conducted by the authors occurred and when government agencies were sampling areas for their conservation status. Coloured maps illustrate, at a glance, the frequency and distribution of all but the most common and the very rarest plant species in the county.

www.FLive.org.uk/Flora

Portora Royal School Saturday 5th October, 4pm, Free Fifteen introductory chapters provide background information on the geology, soils, climate and physical geography of County Fermanagh and describe the range of habitats and the botanical hotspots which visitors might explore. The authors’ creation of the computerised Fermanagh Flora Database enables analysis and mapping of plant findings.

The 860 page Flora of County Fermanagh, published in November 2012, is the result of 35 year’s field work in the county by the joint authors Robert Northridge and Ralph Forbes. The book was judged, by the President of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, to be the outstanding British botanical book of 2012. Robert Northridge will talk on the history of botanical recording in Fermanagh over the last 200 years, will describe the field work involved in the current publication and will show photographs of some of the most interesting habitats and plants of the county. The talk will last about an hour and there will be an opportunity for questions. The body of the book focuses on accounts of the individual species. Written with the keen naturalist in mind, these also provide interesting ‘snippets’ of biology and ecology for the non-specialist reader. The book is greatly enhanced by high-quality photographs of landscapes and plant portraits, many of them taken by Robert Thompson and Hannah Northridge. These are additional to those furnished by the authors. A gazetteer of placenames, with associated map references, is provided and scientific references are listed for each section of the text.

RALPH S. FORBES ROBERT H. NORTHRIDGE

This book and the associated Fermanagh Flora Database, which is maintained by the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR), National Museums Northern Ireland (NMNI), together provide an accessible reference point in the recording of vascular plants across the county, up to the present day. Change is clearly occurring in our environment and this baseline record of plant diversity will grow in importance with passing years. A County Fermanagh Flora web site is being developed within NMNI’s Habitas suite of information sites (www.habitas.org.uk). This will provide up-to-date information and opinion on scientific studies reviewed by the author of the Flora species accounts, that could not be accommodated in the pages of the published book. The web site will also contain maps of every species and hybrid found in County Fermanagh.

POETRY AT FLIVE 2013

www.FLive.org.uk/Poetry National Poetry Day 2013 falls on October 3rd and the chosen theme this year is ‘Water, water, everywhere’. So, inspired by the theme which is entirely appropriate to our island town, and the fact that the date coincides with our Festival, we couldn’t miss the chance to celebrate poetry in our programme of events.

Dawn to Dusk - poetry every hour, on the hour Various venues around the island town of Enniskillen and aboard the BBC bus at the Ekn Castle Museums as part of their Away With Words day @ the Castle (see page 6)

Thursday 3rd October 8am-8pm, Free This is planned as a day-long event, more of a ‘happening’ really, when, on the hour, every hour, selected readers will read their favourite poem at a variety of venues not usually associated with poetry recital, places such as Plunkitt’s Pulpit near the East Bridge, the balcony at the Town Hall, the Fire Station and, heading the list of suggested venues, the top of Cole’s Monument! (Venues, times, readers and poems to be confirmed nearer the event.) We are pleased also to collaborate with the BBC as part of their Away With Words event for National Poetry Day an exciting programme to showcase the work of local school children, performers and musicians. The BBC Bus will be present at the museum to host poetry-related events and, at their invitation, will act as our Pop-up Poetry Hub for the day. Here too our readings will take place every hour on the hour and poetry enthusiasts can bring and swap favourite poems, record their best-loved poems in the radio studio and be part of the poetry-based activities around the Enniskillen Museum complex. Meanwhile, Media students from South West College will be on hand at the various venues around the town to record readings on their mobile devices and will then show an edited video account of the day in the Media Suite at the College, later during the Festival weekend.

A Patchwork Quilt Exhibition Presbyterian Hall, Queen Elizabeth Road, Enniskillen 3rd-5th Oct 10am-5pm Sun 6th Oct 2pm-5pm, Free Some quilts tell stories. Others are a kaleidoscopic celebration of colour & design, with names like Flying Geese, Log Cabin, Pieced Star and Dutchman’s Puzzle. It is an art that demands precision, skill and flair. Honed over time by our mothers and grandmothers, their purpose was practical. Cloth pieces from old dresses, blouses, anything that was outworn as a garment were used to create decorative covers that would keep you warm. Valerie Eames is a founder member of the Quilters Guild of Ireland. She creates a mixture of American Civil War, Traditional and Contemporary Quilts. Valerie has exhibited all over Ireland and in 2011 won 1st prize at the RDS, Dublin for her traditional quilt ‘Not A Patch On Jane’. During the exhibition Valerie will be holding workshops / guided tours of her work on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.00 am to 12.00 and on Sunday from 2.00 to 5.00pm

Claire Falconer is an Irish painter and filmmaker. Her work first gained national acclaim in 2001 when she won RTE Television’s Open House Art Competition. She subsequently had a sell out exhibition at the Abode Gallery in Dublin and has since worked and exhibited in Ireland, Italy and the United States. Although working predominantly in oils on wood, the artist also creates finished pieces using charcoal and ink. A recent return to Fermanagh has led Falconer to draw inspiration from the ‘fluent watery landscape’, flora and fauna. Ancient Celtic traditions are also strong influences, particularly the concept of time as circular rather than linear and also the respect for the moon and the feminine principle which it represents. Claire’s Fermanagh studio is located in the Scotch Stores on Old Henry Street, Enniskillen. More informaton and the artist’s blog are found at www.clairefalconer.com

Working in a variety of mediums, Alex’s aim is aesthetic rather than narrative, creating something that the viewer wishes to look at rather than discuss; the antithesis of conceptual art. Scale, medium and method may vary greatly from project to project, but behind all her work is a basic love of simple drawing.

ARTBYNORTHWEST www.FLive.org.uk/NW Devenish Gallery Launch at 7.30pm on 30th September 1st - 12th Oct, Monday - Saturday 10am-5pm Free

ArtbyNorthWest is a group of artists from Fermanagh, Tyrone and Sligo who have come together to develop their skills and to exhibit their work under the ArtbyNorthWest banner. There is no attempt to form an ArtbyNorthWest ‘corporate image’; the work produced by members of the group is an eclectic mix of styles, subjects and approaches reflecting each artist’s reaction to the varied subjects they choose. The exhibition in the Devenish Gallery will thus show very different styles from the eight artists exhibiting around five pictures each. If there is a prevalent theme, it might be the impact on the artists of the landscape and scenery of the North West of Ireland. The artists are: Olive Bödeker, Jim Crowe, Lois Eadie, Peter Lyner, Margaret Mckenzie, Kathleen Ward and Rosemary Wilkinson. Brian Coulter has been invited to join the group for this exhibition.
