This clever and unique “horrible history” explores the immediate before, during and aftermath of the demise of the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. But if this is history, it’s not history as we know it, as it’s played as broad comedy, and in an assortment of English and American accents. However, it still manages to convey a real sense of what Soviet life must have been like during Stalin’s paranoid “Great Terror” and the Kremlin power struggle that followed his death.
When Eva (Shirley MacLaine) wrongly receives millions of dollars in life insurance, her best friend Maddie (Jessica Lange) convinces her to jet off on a luxury holiday to sunny Spain and spend it. However pandemonium unleashes when the insurance company realise their error and fly out to find the women – will they be able to recover the money before Eva and Maddie spend it all.
THE DEATH OF STALIN
NOMINATED FOR TWO BAFTA FILM AWARDS “Armando Iannucci and a crack comedy troupe take a hatchet to the Soviet tyrant’s cult of personality in a period-comedy diversion that’s dependably close to the bone… It’s absolutely hilarious… but also, people die.” Lisa Mullen, Sight & Sound

When Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young African-American man, visits his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) family estate, he becomes ensnared in the more sinister, real reason for the invitation. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. This speculative thriller from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele (Key and Peele) is equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary. THE ICE KING
An insightful documentary about a lost cultural icon, a story of art, sport, sexuality, and rebellion. John Curry transformed ice skating from a dated sport into a celebrated art form. Coming out on the night of his Olympic win in 1976, he became the first openly gay Olympian in a time when homosexuality wasn’t yet fully legal. Including incredible unseen footage of some of his most remarkable performances and with access to Curry’s letters, archive interviews and interviews with his family, friends and collaborators, this is a fascinating portrait of the man who turned ice skating into an electric sport watched by millions. Watch any figure skating and it falls into two distinct camps: before and after John Curry. From what was a macho, technical sport whose judges punished deviation blossomed – through John Curry’s stubborn beauty – into ice dancing. “A moving tribute to John Curry – a sublimely talented man who straddled sport and art in an extraordinary way.” Matt Dickinson, The Times UK. 2018. ENGLAND IS MINE
It was a time of paisley shirts and sweater vests. Of shopping trolleys in the canal. Foggy, dimly lit alleyways and cul-de-sacs. Of unemployment and bills and duffle coats. Living at home, tucked away in his bedroom, the turning point in Morrissey’s introverted existence comes when he bumps into outgoing Linder Sterling (Brown Findlay), who in turn introduces him to Billy Duffy (Lawrence), a budding guitarist for punk outfit The Nosebleeds. “This early years Morrissey biopic…(has) a sarky, sharp-tongued streak of northern English humour.” Cath Clarke, Time Out “Smiths fans will love this *****.” Entertainment.ie UK. 2017. WE MARK RECORD STORE DAY ON SATURDAY 21 APRIL WITH A WEEK-LONG SERIES OF THE BEST DOCUMENTARIES EXPLORING PUNK ROCK. THIS SPECIAL CELEBRATION WILL CULMINATE IN THE WOOD BURNING SAVAGES’ DEBUT ALBUM LAUNCH PARTY IN NERVE CENTRE ON 21 APRIL.
Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the ‘Riot grrrl’ movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, The Punk Singer takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader. WINNER OF WOMEN IN CINEMA LENA SHARPE AWARD “Powerful vintage performance footage shows quickly what made Hanna so provocative: though fighting sexism was her front-andcentre agenda, Hanna took the stage in skimpy outfits, sometimes with “slut” written on a bare midriff, and danced in a punk-meetsgirlie-show way that was undeniably sexy.” John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter USA. 2013. Director: Sini Anderson. Cast: Kathleen Hanna, Tammy Rae Carland, Kathryn Wilcox, Tobi Vail, Billy Karen, Becca Albee. Duration: 1hr.21mins.Cert: 15

END OF THE CENTURY: THE STORY OF THE RAMONES 15TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING In 1974, the New York City music scene was shocked into consciousness by the violently new and raw sound of a band of misfits from Queens called The Ramones. This quartet of unlikely rock stars travelled across the country and around the world connecting with the disenfranchised everywhere, while sparking a movement that would resonate with two generations of outcasts across the globe. “The hyperbolic claim of the punk-rock historian Legs McNeil that the Ramones ‘’saved rock ‘n’ roll’’ may finally not be far off the mark.” New York Times USA. 2003.
