‘See the Arts from Both Sides Now’ – our chosen theme for this year’s InterAct Festival – conjures up two things in my mind. The first is listening to Joni Mitchell in a darkened bedroom at 14. The second is more significant and reflective of the principles of InterAct though; put simply, it’s perspective. City of Culture 2013 changed the way Derry-Londonderry is perceived, both locally and internationally. In contrast to the Flag protests and unresolved Haass Talks in Belfast, City of Culture put forward a vision of Derry-Londonderry that not merely functioned - it dazzled. InterAct was part of this shining vision and now, in 2014, we are part of its legacy. Now in our sixth consecutive year, we have not simply expanded our Festival… we’ve doubled it. Running for the first time ever for TWO WEEKS, the Youth Forum – our proactive teenage planning committee – have opted for a week at the beginning of the Summer and a week at the end of Summer. “Side A” of our cassette tape concept Festival – running from the 28th of June to the 5th of July – includes activities for those
‘Born to Create’. Participants can create stories, create the news, create multi-media art, create fine art, create characters, create costumes, create photographs, and even create their own single. “Side B” – running from the 23rd to the 30th of August – includes activities for those ‘Born to Perform’. Participants can perform as DJs, perform as street dancers, perform as writers, perform as actors, perform as drummers, perform as singers, and finally perform as a Rock Band. Open to young people of all backgrounds and abilities aged 12 to 21, we trust the Festival will attract InterActors old and new with its diverse array of FREE workshops, screenings and performances. From any perspective, it’s an impressive line-up – one that would be impossible without our funders, partner venues, festival assistants and of course, the Millennium Forum & Youth Forum (THANK YOU). Whatever your outlook, we hope you’ll see the value of signing up, from any side…
Festival Director Kate Guelke 33
