GARDEN 1 FIRE Compagnie Carabosse (France) St. Columb’s Park

Fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse use scrap metal, charcoal, and even cast-off clothing to create a magical fire garden on a huge scale in St Columb’s Park. Carabosse are one of France’s most important street arts groups, transforming streets and parks into flickering artworks that remind us of one of our most basic and elemental human needs. This installation runs Thurs – Sat only, 6.30pm – 9.30pm. Sponsored by

KICKS 4 TEENAGE Deepa Mann-Kler

STITCH IN TIME 6 A Tim Etchells (UK)

(Northern Ireland) New commission BT Exchange Building

New commission Rosemount Shirt Factory

One of the most successful bands ever to come out of Derry, the Undertones spoke to a generation, reacting against the backdrop of the Troubles by writing songs that reflected on the normality of growing up, of being young and in love. Deepa Mann-Kler’s Teenage Kicks quotes a line from one their most celebrated songs.

Tim Etchells’ steel letters adorned with hundreds of LED lights will measure 23m long. The wording makes a playful but direct reference to the historical context of shirtmaking. It recalls the complete text of the proverb from which it is taken (A Stitch In Time Saves Nine), suggesting ideas of repair and care, and of disaster averted.

UPON A TIME 2 TWICE Ocubo (Portugal)

New commission Clock Tower, Ebrington Square

Rising up to 14 metres high above the ground, Symphonie Conique creates a surreal universe of illuminated cones that move and sway in reaction to the crowd. Sponsored by

The clocktower building on Ebrington Square will be transformed into an imaginary world painted by 120 local children. 8 and 9 year olds from all faith traditions were invited to play a virtual game of consequences, painted onto a model of the building. The children were filmed during the workshops, and the final projection will include footage of them working together as well as their artworks. Sponsored by

Supported by Arts Council Northern Ireland, Bluebell Arts Project and the Embassy of Portugal. Workshops facilitated by Gasyard Centre and Fountain Primary School

TRAVELLERS (LES 3 THE VOYAGEURS)

Cédric Le Borgne (France) Peace Bridge

Cédric Le Borgne’s breathtaking illuminated figures are sculptures made of light. In human form but with no features, they will be suspended on the Peace Bridge, appearing to soar and fly, inviting visitors to glance up and offering a connection between dreams and reality. Sponsored by

EMPTY PLINTH 8 THE Holywell Trust & The Nerve

PROJECTION – 12 PUBLIC DERRY~LONDONDERRY

Centre (N. Ireland) New commission City Walls, Grand Parade

Krzysztof Wodiczko (Poland / USA) New commission Various locations

The Empty Plinth will be the first of a series of installations to be mounted on Walker’s plinth. Consisting of a simple beam of light, it will rise into the sky, a symbolic beacon of hope.

Wodiczko is renowned for his large-scale projections around the world. His work often involves the active participation of a city’s marginalised or estranged residents. For this new commission, he has been working with community groups and the Verbal Arts Centre to create a mobile artwork that will project testimonies of local people onto the sides of buildings.

Part of the Brilliant commissioning scheme for local artists

DOGS 9 NEON Deepa Mann-Kler

(Northern Ireland) New commission Walker Courtyard, Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall

★ Please note this installation will be moving around the City Centre. Supported by the Polish Cultural Institute and the Verbal Arts Centre

FUSED 13 CONNED HarperMagee

This installation consists of a joyful collection of bright balloon dogs made of neon. Neon Dogs is a glowing celebration of a favourite children’s party trick in a work designed to make people stop and smile.

(Northern Ireland/Australia) New commission Foyleside Shopping Centre

Part of the Brilliant commissioning scheme for local artists

10 VOYAGE Novak (UK) New commission Austins Department Store

This piece explores an effect known as ‘regional brain conflict’, it manipulates the connection between the parts of the brain that process written words and the parts that process colour. The installation sees the colours of the Tricolour and the Union Jack spelled out in different colours, causing confusion and questioning the allegiances the flags engender. Part of the Brilliant commissioning scheme for local artists

This large-scale projection, inspired by Jules Verne, will see the exterior of the oldest department store in the world transformed by a breathtaking digital projection. Featuring a bespoke score by composer Ed Carter.

OF OAKS 11 GROVE RMS Design (Northern Ireland)

NIGHT IN 14 SPINNING LIVING COLOUR

Sponsored by Part of the Brilliant commissioning scheme for local artists

(The Netherlands) The Fountain (next to New Gate)

Marbles is a group of large, moulded plastic shapes that interact with people using sound, colour and light. Each ‘marble’ contains LEDs and smart sensors that instinctively respond to human touch, changing their mood from ‘bored’ to ‘excited’, becoming more animated as the audience interacts with them. Sponsored by

Supported by Kingdom of the Netherlands

16 SHIRTS Hilary Sleiman & Lesley

Bond (Northern Ireland) New commission Fabric World Building, Abercorn Road

In days gone by Derry-Londonderry was a centre of shirt-making, with dozens of shirt factories scattered around the city. Hilary Sleiman and Lesley Bond’s piece pays tribute to an industry that was once so important, with a series of ghostly shirts appearing in the windows of the old factory. Sponsored by Part of the Brilliant commissioning scheme for local artists

17 FÊTE Ron Haselden

(France / UK) The Gasyard Centre

Elaine Buckholtz (USA) Carlisle Road Car Park

New commission Craft Village

Inspired by the meaning of the word ‘Derry’ (derived from the Gaelic for ‘oak grove’), RMS Design’s installation comprises a series of tree-like structures made of electro luminescent wire, which responds to audiences’ movements.

15 MARBLES Daan Roosegaarde

Spinning Night In Living Colour samples Van Gogh’s painting, All Night Café, like a spinning record with a shaking video camera. It is transformed into a series of moving lines, reinterpreting the original colour palette. This will be the first time that this artwork has been displayed outdoors and on such a large scale. Sponsored by

Ron Haselden’s atmospheric installation conjures up the sights and sounds of an abandoned country fairground. Thousands of softly glowing lightbulbs and nostalgic tunes from France and Holland create a gorgeous interactive light and sound installation. Supported by Institut Français
