LIFE ANIMATED THURSDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2017 SHOWING 8PM A beautiful and life-affirming documentary, “A Life, Animated”. In light of Newcastle being awarded the title of Northern Ireland’s first “autismfriendly” town, this is a perfect opener for FMFF17, an inspirational tale of one family’s journey as they use film to cope with their growing son’s condition. It tells the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child, until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This emotional coming-of-age documentary follows Owen as he graduates to adulthood, and takes his first tentative steps toward independence.

The story of the twin Voyager space probes, launched in 1977, is a tale of incredible vision, determination and indomitable human spirit, as it chronicles the creation, launch and legacy of these brave spacecraft that currently sit over 12 billion miles away from where they were born. This elegant and cinematic documentary digs deep, to reveal the backstory behind these 2 intrepid intergalactic explorers, who, on a daily basis, quietly observe and record inconceivable events and deep space, while bearing a Golden Record of images and recordings of life, back here on Earth, awaiting discovery by who knows what. A empowering visual paean to making dreams come true, and the brilliance of the human creative mind – this will stay with you for some time. Director Stephen Chow brings us this hugely entertaining chop-socky comedy/kung fu bonanza, which delivers staggeringly balletic martial arts set pieces alongside laugh out loud special FX and cartoonishly breathless action. An inept would-be gangster inadvertently causes a war between a tap dancing, axe wielding gang & a poor rural village which, unwittingly, happens to be the chosen retirement community for ex-martial arts masters. Flat out fun!!

Director Matthew Heineman’s hard hitting 2017 documentary is not an easy film to watch. The subject matter - a new collective of Syrian digital journalists calling themselves “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently”, and their attempts to expose and globally broadcast the human rights violations by ISIS in their home country – is harrowing and yet compelling filmmaking. The Eighties frenzy continues first thing Saturday, with a much requested screening of possibly the decade’s most iconic film of all – John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club! It still stands head and padded shoulders above its peers, as the pinnacle of the troubled teen/parents just don’t understand genre that ruled the screens for so many years. Stuck in a day-long Saturday detention in a school library we find a mish-mash of high school strangers who begin their incarceration with nothing in common, each bound to their allocated role in the high school caste hierarchy. Stone cold classic, from the clothes to the pin-sharp script, the music and dancing scenes – the whole bit is warm, engaging, thoughtful and very funny. Our special screening takes place at Shimna College, with ‘bacon butty’ included for this special Detention-style screening. Don’t You Forget About It.

Successful screen adaptations of literary works tend to be few and far between, and films that are better than the original text are even more rare! To explore this theory, in conjunction with our friends at Newcastle Library we are taking a classic book and screening it’s (critically acclaimed) cinematic version, with a view to seeing if the film version is superior to the original. A book group will be held to discuss the original novel, and its status as a modern classic. See website for more information.

DREW: THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER
This extraordinary story, depicting an imagined journey shared by these two sworn enemies, portrays a fictional reality that has extensive real-life future echoes, as these two iconic opposing figureheads – one loyal to England, the other an advocate of reunification go head-to-head on a Scottish trip that will see them take the biggest leap of faith possible and ultimately change the course of history in Northern Ireland. Despite the lines of fact and fiction blurring hugely within this film, the frankly jaw-dropping central performances of Colm Meaney and Timothy Spall as the 2 embittered foes, ensure this is an effective, engrossing and entertaining road trip movie, where historical fact is parked up in favour of a delicious “what-if?” scenario with a staggering payoff.
