THE PUNK SINGER
A Film About Kathleen Hanna (15) Dir. Sini Anderson • 2013 • USA • 82 mins The Punk Singer is an inspirational and rousing celebration of the creative and political life of outspoken Riot grrrl icon, Kathleen Hanna. Director Sini Anderson’s debut documentary is a feature-length hit of pure punk feminist adrenaline that takes in a wider view of “queer”, exploring the impact of Riot Grrrl on the politics and art of a generation of young queer men and women.
Kathleen Hanna shot to relevance in 1991 as front woman of girl band Bikini Kill, using her captivating voice and explosive femininity to challenge gender injustice during the grunge years. Usually recognised as the inspiration behind Smells Like Teen Spirit, Hanna’s real legacy becomes obvious in the film through raw archive of electric early performances and brilliant contributions from Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, The Beastie Boys and many more. Prepare to leave the cinema feeling fired up and ready to mosh!

STRANGER BY THE LAKE (18) Dir. Alain Guiraudie • 2013 • France • 100mins One of the big award-winners at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Strangers By The Lake is a is a stunning, confrontationally psychological drama (with a hint of Hitchcock) that creates an atmosphere of frank homoeroticism, utterly without inhibition or taboo. It’s summertime in a cruising spot for men, tucked away on the shores of a lake. Franck falls in love with Michel, an attractive, potent and lethally dangerous man. Franck knows this, but wants to live out his passion anyway. We won’t give away any more of the twist-and turn-plot, just enjoy the suspense of this visually stunning and highly original film. “Utterly gripping and absorbing... one of the best this year. kkkk” The Guardian

G.B.F. (PG) Dir. Darren Stein • 2013 • USA • 98mins A huge comedy hit at this year’s London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, G.B.F. is the perfect queer movie for all ages and audiences. The fight for supremacy between a school’s most popular girls takes an unexpected turn when Tanner becomes its first openly gay student. As they race to bag the big trend in fashion accessories, the Gay Best Friend, Tanner, must choose between skyrocketing popularity and the friends he is leaving behind. A Clueless for the Millennials, it also considers some of us who remember school as it used to be before mobile phones, with hilarious appearances by both Megan Mullally (Karen from Will & Grace) and Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) “... absolutely hilarious. If you love teen comedies from the 90s, you’ll love this..” Queerty.com

MY PRAIRIE HOME (PG) Dir. Chelsea McMullan • 2013 • CANADA • 120 mins
With a LIVE performance by RAE SPOON
Having captivated the crowds at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Outburst is delighted to present the wonderfully genre-queer My Prairie Home in Derry and to welcome it’s star, the inimitable Rae Spoon, who will introduce the film and play live after the screening. Growing up queer and trans in an abusive, evangelical Christian household in Alberta, Canada, gave Spoon a unique perspective on life. Whether singing or in interview they (Spoon uses gender neutral pronouns) have a disarming honesty and charm about experiences that often resonate strongly with our experiences here in Northen Ireland.
Set against a backdrop of diners, burnt out cars, Greyhound bus stations and giant model dinosaurs, My Prairie Home is a beautiful meditation on home and belonging, made from a fine blend of travelogue, documentary, music video and magical realism. This dreamy, odd, queer film is one for anyone who’s ever felt out of place. Rae will play a live set of elctro/folk after the film and, if you haven’t heard them before, you’ll understand why Rae has shared a stage with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Natalie Merchant over the years. Not to be missed!
