DERRY~LONDONDERRY
#WOW2013
8-10 NOVEMBER THE PLAYHOUSE
WELCOME TO WOMEN OF THE WORLD JUDE KELLY WOMEN OF THE WORLD FESTIVAL DIRECTOR When Derry~Londonderry City of Culture approached us about doing WOW, I felt an immense sense of pride about the idea of WOW being part of your programme. I have been aware of the long and consistent history that women have played in the city, in the shirt factories and in the civil rights movement particularly. I am thrilled that WOW might be able to draw attention to some of these stories, as well as celebrating the women of Derry~Londonderry today - from school girls to women who have many more years of experience to draw on and share. WOW is somewhere where all kinds of women (and men) can gather to look deeply at some serious issues - as well as some less serious ones - uncover histories, and meet local women and those from distant places who are doing amazing things in everything from science and crafting, business and education. I am really looking forward to being part of this coming to life in Derry~Londonderry as I know it will - and to meeting everyone who is part of it.
CLAIRE MCDERMOTT ARTISTIC DIRECTOR WOW DERRY~LONDONDERRY 2013 We are excited to be presenting the Women of the World festival to the city as part of our special year as City of Culture 2013. WOW originated at Southbank Centre, the UK’s largest arts centre. The brainchild of Jude Kelly, it is the perfect vehicle for the Maiden City to share the stories of its many inspiring, determined women, past and present. WOW Derry~Londonderry 2013 will celebrate the city’s factory girls, community workers, health practitioners, entrepreneurs, educators, performers and those who are brave enough to stand up and share their stories – some motivating, some funny, some shocking, some enraging but all relevant to women’s lives and women’s experiences. WOW Derry~Londonderry is the culmination of many months of partnership working between Culture Company, Southbank Centre and the women of the city who have informed the shape and themes of this festival. As you leaf through the pages of the brochure, I hope you will see the voices of local women shining through, alongside pioneering women from farther shores, here to share their achievements and discuss the issues that they face. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this programme of events. We hope you enjoy it. 2

Women behind the lens aren’t aiming to be great female filmmakers; they are simply aiming to be great filmmakers. But when it comes to theatrical distribution and, considering most moviegoers are adolescent males, do women-made films get the same attention as the latest shoot ‘em up action flick? Do young girls have enough access to film-making skills? Is there a future for women in the industry? Let’s discuss. Panellists include local film makers Margo Harkin and Gabrielle Tierney; Belfast born filmmaker and curator, Kathryn Ferguson (who has made films for designers, brands and musicians including Chloe, Selfridges, Sinead O’Connor and Lady Gaga), and Megan McClean, a local Moving Image Arts student from St. Mary’s College. SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER FILM SCREENING: SALMA VIEW SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 1:00pm – 2:30pm Actors Studio
VIEW As a child, growing up in South India, Salma used to avidly read the newspapers that wrapped the family’s vegetables. When she reached puberty, she was taken out of school and locked away in a room with a single window. She finally accepted an arranged marriage, only to exchange one jail for another. Somehow, from the confines of her living hell, Salma begins to fight back – through raw and anguished poetry. Her poems eventually reached an astonished publisher, giving voice to millions of girls locked away around the world. Kim Longinotto’s latest contribution to a ground-breaking body of work on the plight of women places her once again in the midst of a country where women are desperate to change their circumstances. Her nuanced portrait of Salma demonstrates just how difficult it can be for women to break from oppressive tradition – no matter how just the cause. SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER THE POWER OF ADDICTION TALK SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 12:00noon – 1:00pm Auditorium
directed by Hilary Dully in 1994, which shows women from Ireland who have had abortions telling their story (duration: 26 minutes).
No one decides to get addicted to alcohol or prescription drugs. Alienating family and friends and failing at work are not what anyone plans. Despite this, experts agree that addiction is on the rise.
YOGA RELAX SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 12:00noon – 1:00pm Green Room
Some courageous women will share their personal stories of addiction while local professionals will relate their knowledge and identify support that exists to help sufferers of addiction. Panellists include representatives from Foyle Valley House, Hurt NI and Mind Yourself.
THE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS OF WOMEN ON THE ISLAND OF IRELAND DEBATE SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 12:00noon – 1:30pm Gallery The reproductive rights of women in Ireland differ to those living in England, Scotland and Wales. Abortion law in Northern Ireland is governed by the Offences against the Person Act 1861 and the Criminal Justice Act 1945. The 1967 Abortion Act of England and Wales does not extend to Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland, abortion has been the subject of five referenda over the past 30 years. What impact does this legal situation have on women here? Let’s discuss. This session includes a screening of ’50,000 Secret Journeys’, produced and 22

‘The Far Side Of Revenge’ explores Teya Sepinuck’s engagement with a group of Northern Irish women from backgrounds and histories so diverse that it would be difficult to imagine them sharing a space, let alone creating a public, cultural event together. In this documentary they create a theatre performance titled ‘I Once Knew A Girl’ which was performed in Derry’s Playhouse Theatre in December 2010 before going on tour. Filmmaker Margo Harkin, who will introduce this screening, delivers a penetrating insight into a process of creation where the pain of individual stories is counterbalanced by the joyful bond that deepens between the women over a nine-month period.

SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER FABULOUS FASHIONISTAS TALK SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 3:00pm – 4:00pm Auditorium No one could fail to be inspired by the six women in the documentary ‘Fabulous Fashionistas’, a film by Sue Bourne and Wellpark Productions, which was recently screened on Channel 4. With an average age of 80, these feisty women show that style is not ageist; these ladies are determined to look fabulous, have fun and redefine old age. More importantly, they show that following your passions in life, taking care of yourself and living life to the full equates to happiness at any age. Reaction to the documentary had those of a similar age contacting the producers to say it was ‘inspirational,’ ‘gave me hope,’ and ‘I’m no longer afraid of old age.’

SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER MINORITY REPORT TALK SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 3:00pm – 4:00pm Green Room
NANCY MECKLER TALK SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 3:00pm – 4:00pm Gallery
In recent years Derry~Londonderry, along with other towns and cities in Northern Ireland, has experienced a growth in its ethnic populace. How good are we at welcoming new communities to our street or neighbourhood? Female representatives from various cultures will discuss their experiences of being part of an ethnic minority in our City of Culture. Chaired by Anne Murray Cavanagh.
When Nancy Meckler directed her first film in the 1960s, there were so few female directors that she did not have a role model. Working in an environment where actors were acutely aware that they had “never been directed by a woman”, Nancy persevered to become the first woman to direct at the National Theatre in 1981. Nancy will talk about the challenges she faced and how at the time being directed by a female was viewed as something that would be strange and disorienting.
This session will include a screening of a 15-minute film produced by Bluebell Arts as part of their ‘Digi Vision’ project about women from other cultures now living in the city. Sarika Shah
Nancy Meckler is the Director of the upcoming new production by Field Day Theatre Company of Sam Sheppard’s new play ‘Particle of Dread: Oedipus Variations.’ This is an essential event for any working, or aspiring, theatre practitioner or student. Nancy Meckler

THE HIJABI MONOLOGUES PERFORMANCE SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 4:30pm – 5:30pm Gallery
What do you think of WOW? What’s your opinion on the City of Culture? What are your hopes, desires and dreams for Derry~Londonderry beyond 2013? If you’ve got an opinion, we want to hear it. This session will record footage for broadcast at 8pm on Tuesday 12th November on Resonance FM, in London on 104.4FM, Derry~Londonderry on 106.4FM and online at www.resonancefm.com as part of the programme, ‘Clear Shot’.
A frank, poignant and heart-warming story telling performance by and about Muslim women, which offers a glimpse into their everyday joys, cares and frustrations. The production provides a space for Muslim women or those telling their stories to share their experience and be as they are; a space that does not claim to tell every story and speak for every voice. The stories go beyond the much debated hijab, celebrate the gift of the gab and present a deeper journey where claims are challenged and stereotypes confronted.
This recording session will be facilitated by the Resonate project, an ambitious recording initiative capturing the musical talent, energy and spirit of the city during 2013.
SLAGS, HAGS, WAGS, SHAGS, BAGS, FAGS & NAGS TALK SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 4:30pm – 5:30pm Auditorium If you sleep with him you’re a slag; if he sleeps with you, he’s a stallion. If you’ve got more money than him, you’re a great catch; if he’s got more money than you, you’re a gold digger. At this session we are going to have a good old laugh at the gender imbalance we women have to endure. Let’s all be part of the sisterhood and support each other girls!
