Section hair as shown. The sectioning pattern will determine the amount of contrast between the shorter area underneath and the longer top area. The sectioning pattern is not symmetrical: the asymmetrical pattern shifts and off-sets the overall shape.

Take a diagonal parting that reflects the front hairline pattern.

Continue to take diagonal partings and slightly overdirect. For example, the second parting is slightly overdirected to the first, the third parting is overdirected to the second, and so forth.

The diagonal parting extends into the nape area, behind the ear. Continue the process of slightly overdirecting and slightly elevating to create a smooth band of graduation.

Refine the hairline: comb the hair forward using the comb as a stabilizer, then point and chip into the temple area.

Further refine using scissorover-comb and pointing. Both methods are used for refining the outline. Do not cut into the internal lengths; only focus on the perimeter.

Repeat the process of refining the nape hairline. Always work with the natural growth pattern. Pointing and chipping into the hairline adds further softness to a strong, structured shape. The hairline should naturally fade into the nape.

Continue as before, taking diagonal partings. Note the partings in the nape will extend to the opposite side, just working past the center back of head. Note the weight area is high and close to the head.

Repeat the process on the opposite side.

Continue to work around the back of the head. Avoid excess overdirection or unnecessary build up of weight.

Cross-check horizontally and diagonally. Further refine. Blow-dry hair smooth with a Denman brush using the wrapping technique.

Internal lengths: note this area will not connect to the area underneath; however, it will visually blend depending on how the hair is styled. Take a diagonal parting that extends from the temple area to the crown and cut to desired length.

Using the same parting pattern, overdirect all partings at the side to the first guide.

Return to the original guide at the top area. Work on back area by taking diagonal partings and overdirecting the hair to the first guide. Note: The entire parting pivots off the crown area. Crowns vary, so adjust technique accordingly.

Return to opposite side back area and repeat. Overdirect all partings to the first guide. Cross-check.

Establish length that falls over the shorter area underneath. Create a heavy line. Cut though fingers and then refine through the comb.

Finally, cross-check internally and remove any unwanted corners or weight. The hair is now ready for the color technique. To ensure haircut and haircolor complement one another, refine haircut after color process is complete.

Refine fringe area. Do not section this area: allow the hair to fall in its natural position and cut a heavy, curved off balance line.
