Choosing the senior project

Choosing The Senior Project Introduction: Al khalediyah neighborhood is located in the center of Homs city in Syria ,it is the most affected area during the war in Syria. It was include a huge number of population before the war and when the war began it was the first region which is affected by destruction that led the people to leave the neighborhood to another place to feel safety. People during the war lost their homes, their works, their related and their memorizes. So when they will be returned back to the city, they want to find places to stay and work.

Choosing The Senior Project Al khalediyah neighborhood in Homs city has historical and social aspects: • khalid ben al waleed mosque has important meaning of the city because homs city called the city of Khaled ben Al-waleed it has historical importance • Also, has the shrine of Khaled ben Al-waleed. • Al khalidyah before the war was the major gathering point of a huge number of people based on the type of life and people they were live in alkhalidyah. They classified as poor people (low class and middleclass)and they had simple life in the neighborhood. • The neighborhood existed in a strategic area of the city

• It is known as the main gathering point of visitors and tourists from everywhere.

Choosing The Senior Project And according to many studies, observations and researches from the websites, statics and news and some people I met after they left the city and some of my relatives who were lived there before the war. I decided to have a trial in restoring and renovating of the functions of the area after the war that led to damage every thing there, to make it in a better way and having combination between traditional and modern way to get benefits for the locals and tourists of the city after war.

Web sites : Some websites have a vision to the same area, to restore the previous function and renovate the craftsmanship of the city to make it more traditional and beneficial in attracting the tourists after the war.

Research and Site analysis

Importance of the site Homs, previously known as Emesa, is a city in western Syria and the capital of the Homs Governorate. It is 501 metres above sea level and is located 162 kilometres north of Damascus the capital city of Syria. Area: 48 km² Weather: 3°C, Wind SE at 19 km/h, 63% Humidity Population: 200,000 (2016)

Importance of the site The site is located in Homs, Syria. In the main road “Hama” street , al “salamia” and Khaled ben alwaleed street. Surrounded by social facility , commercial, residential, and another neighborhood. It is called Al-Khalidya because of Khaled ben Al-waleed mosque as the most important part of the neighborhood because of its meaning to the population there in the whole city. Also, inside the mosque there are the shrine of Khalid ben Alwaleed.

Weather analysis The city is in between the southern outliers of the Nusayriyah Mountain Range located to the west and Mount Lebanon, overlooking the Homs Gap. Because of the gap, the area around Homs receives much more rainfall than interior regions to its north and south.

Weather analysis . Homs' location ensures that it receives softening influences and breezes from the Mediterranean. As a result, the city has a much milder climate than nearby Hama, with higher average rainfall of 18 inches (460 mm) instead of 14 inches (360 mm), but it also experiences greater wind

Design process

The Concept The design concept is to restore, connect, link and spillover the past to the present in functional and traditional way according to the first principle of post war in architecture which is |restore what has been lost to its pre-war condition.| taking into account the consideration of the urban standard . Trying to restore the previous functions of the area in way that can attract the tourists and showing them the traditions of the city. Ottoman architecture is the main style of the mosque, so I considered that in the design to create linking to the surrounding area . Court yard with open paths and arches according to architecture in Syria Giving the community a feel of belonging to it through the function, style, zoning and circulation around the square of mosque.

Structure and details

structures Structure systems Flat plate system Flat Plate System - Two-way slab is supported directly on columns without the use of beams, commonly used where spans are not large 20-25 ft.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Flat Plate System: Advantages: Simple formwork and suitable for direct fix or sprayed ceiling No beams—simplifying under-floor services Minimum structural depth and reduced floor-to floor height. Disadvantages of Flat Plate System: Medium spans Limited lateral load capacity as part of a moment frame May need shear heads or shear reinforcement at the columns or larger columns for shear May not be suitable for heavy loads.

structures Structure systems Space Frame structure a space frame or space structure is a truss-like, lightweight rigid structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space frames can be used to span large areas 9-39 meters with few interior supports. a space frame is strong because of the inherent rigidity of the triangle; flexing loads (bending moments) are transmitted as tension and compression loads along the length of each strut. I used this type of structure in library and museums.
