Graduate studio: Envelope Studio Professor: Wendell Bernette Proposal: Adaptive reuse of the Maricopa County Environmental Services Building located at Central Avenue and Roosevelt in the heart of downtown Phoenix. An analysis & re-design of the existing building’s envelope to facilitate performance and activate the surrounding community. The existing building underserves the majority occupant (Maricopa County Environmental Services) and their mission to serve, protect and educate their community regarding environmental hazards. The building’s design ignores the highly active intersection of Central Avenue and Roosevelt; the existing façade faces the opposite direction. The building currently encroaches the existing site and sidewalk, reducing pedestrian traffic. The envelope foes not respond the surrounding context including the light rail or Roosevelt arts district.
