How to remove coffee stains Step 1: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of a liquid dishwashing detergent for each (1) cup of lukewarm water and pour your solution into a spray bottle. (Do not use laundry detergent or automatic machine dishwashing detergent because both contain chemicals that could permanently damage and destroy your carpet or upholstery.) Step 2: Spray the area with the formula. Step 3: Using a cloth or towel, gently work the formula into the area using light strokes from the edges of the stain to the centre; at the centre of the stain, lightly pinch the area in an upward motion. Do not rub the stain. Step 4: Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water and spray the are almightily to rinse the detergent solution from the area, but do not over wet. (This is important; any residue that remains may cause rapid soiling – your carpet or upholstery could become a dirt magenta!) Step 5: Blot the water using a clean, dry cloth and light strokes that travel from the edges to the centre. Step 6: If the spot is not completely removed by the detergent solution, pour a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide on a clean cloth. Blot the stain using the same light, edge to centre strokes described above. Step 7: Repeat if necessary and then throughly rinse and blot. Step 8: When the area is completely rinsed, allow it to dry. A fan will help sped it along.
