Welcome From netball Australia On behalf of Netball Australia, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2017 Netball Quad Series. The Netball Quad Series was born from a joint desire to increase opportunities for regular international competition, which is crucial for all nations involved in the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. We are thrilled to bring international netball back to Brisbane for the first time since 2009, with a double header. It will be a feast of netball featuring four of the world’s best netballing nations. The Quad Series will see international netball return to Canberra for the first time since 2014, before the winner is determined in Invercargill, New Zealand,

with our beloved Samsung Diamonds out to defend their title. Thank you to our valued broadcast partners, Nine and Telstra, and our commercial partners, including naming rights partner Samsung and major partners Suncorp and Nissan, for making the Quad Series possible. I cannot wait to see our passionate Samsung Diamonds fans dressed in green and gold, cheering on their role models. Sit back and enjoy the athleticism, speed and skill that our athletes bring to the court.

Welcome From QUEENSLAND Welcome to Brisbane as we kick off the 2017 Netball Quad Series with an electric double header that sees Australia take on England, and New Zealand battle it out with South Africa. The tournament features four heavyweight international teams whose fierce rivalry is sure to attract thousands of visitors from around Australia and the world. Queensland has seen great netball success recently with the Sunshine Coast Lightning now the reigning Suncorp Super Netball champions, and we’re building on this momentum

as we look ahead to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Queensland Government is proud to support the 2017 Netball Quad Series in Brisbane through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. I want to thank all those involved in making this event a great success for the State and I encourage you to make the most of your experience here in Brisbane.

Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events

Welcome From AUSTRALIAn CAPITAL TERRITORY It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2017 Netball Quad Series. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to the Samsung Diamonds and their competitors, the South African Spar Proteas. The Diamonds will no doubt be looking to retain their title as the reigning series champions with a repeat performance of their recent 16-goal win against the Proteas. All fans can expect to see some high quality netball on display as the Quad Series serves as preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where the Diamonds will be looking to defend their 2014 gold medal on home soil.

Following on from the success of the capital’s Suncorp Super Netball matches earlier this year, the ACT Government is proud to continue hosting games of such high calibre right here in Canberra. It is fantastic to see netball join the city’s line up of world-class events, adding to our rich sporting culture and providing the opportunity for local and interstate fans to see some of the world’s best players live in action. I hope you enjoy tonight’s match and I encourage our visiting fans to take some time out to discover one good thing after another in our beautiful city during your stay.

Andrew Barr MLA Chief Minister

Five Minutes with Courtney… 1. What was your reaction to getting that call from Lisa Alexander (Samsung Diamonds coach) that you have been picked for the Diamonds for the 2017 test series? I was over the moon! I was genuinely so excited. When I took the call, I was actually up in the middle of the Kimberley’s on holiday so I got quite a nice shock! 2. You toured at the start of the year with the Diamonds for the England and South African tests, but haven’t donned the dress just yet. What was it like being over there and what did you learn? It was just so good to immerse myself in the environment and learning what the Diamonds do and how things work – understanding the systems, that was the biggest thing I learned. 3. What are you looking forward to? Just being back with the girls and getting the opportunity to take the court! 6

Netball Quad Series 2017

4. What are some of the things you have gained a better insight into whilst preparing for the Quad Series with the Diamonds? I gained some strong knowledge in some defensive aspects to my game and getting an understanding of the off-court work like how the team mentally prepares for a game, what our trademark is and also relationship building with my teammates. I think this knowledge will better prepare me for games in the upcoming tests and I’m really looking forward to putting what I have learned into practise. SUNCORP SUPER NETBALL

SEASON ONE TO REMEMBER THE RIVALRY City v city, state v state. A new league, with new teams saw new rivalries form, and these rivalries were intense in Suncorp Super Netball. Rivals met each other twice throughout the season, with the Thunderbirds and Fever the only teams to win one apiece in their two matches. For the Magpies, Swifts and Firebirds, they will be plotting their revenge in 2018.

NEW STARS ARE BORN With player movement creating opportunities in Suncorp Super Netball, we saw the emergence of new faces that flourished. Jess Anstiss (West Coast Fever), Sasha Glasgow (Adelaide Thunderbirds) and Sam Wallace (NSW Swifts) are just a few of the new recruits that made their mark in 2017.

EXPERIENCED ATHLETES TAKE ANOTHER STEP UP Geva Mentor (Sunshine Coast Lightning), Liz Watson (Melbourne Vixens) and Caitlin Thwaites (Magpies Netball) are familiar faces in domestic and international netball. They took their game to another level in Suncorp Super Netball. Mentor captained Lightning to the inaugural premiership and was named Player of the Year. Waston was named rebel young star and Thwaites recorded a career best season.

THE COMEBACKS Bec Bulley and Renae Ingles made their return to netball in 2017, following the birth of their babies. These supermums were the first Suncorp Super Netball mothers. Juggling motherhood with playing elite netball, they didn’t miss a beat. Ingles announced her retirement at the end of the season, with Bulley signing on with the Giants in 2018.

OUR CHAMPIONS Sunshine Coast Lightning flew under the radar for many pundits at the start of the season. Although with a team brimming in international talent, it is no surprise that experienced coach Noeline Taurua led the Lightning to the first ever Suncorp Super Netball title. With the whole team staying on for 2018, watch out for Lightning as they attempt to go back to back.

IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY that a 23-year-old Caitlin Bassett captured our hearts, and attention at the 2011 Netball World Cup, scoring the winning goal to secure the Diamonds’ 10th title.

With 66 Test Caps to her name, Bassett becomes the most experienced Diamonds squad member in the 2017/18 squad, and 15th most capped of all time.

“It’s a surprise,” said Bassett “Time has flown to be honest. It’s an honour and it’s exciting to still love netball this far into my career.” Bassett says she has developed a lot since her first hit out and exposure to the Diamonds environment. She has continued to grow and learn since her debut in the green and gold alongside former captain Laura Geitz in 2008. “I learn from every outing I have,” Bassett admitted. “It’s fantastic to be in an environment where you are constantly challenged. That’s what Lisa wants to do, make us feel comfortable with the uncomfortable. “It is a great environment to be challenged and to grow, and I have definitely done a lot of growing.” Read the full article online at: www.aussiediamonds.com.au

Young gun Courtney Bruce will be looking to make her Australian Netball debut in 2017. The defender has stamped her authority in Fever’s defensive end, her determination to get to every ball a feature of her game. No stranger to the international stage, Bruce has represented Australia in the Fast5 format, taking out the 2016 Fast5 Player of the Year.

The young defender from Geelong had a breakout season with the Vixens, after just six appearances in her previous two seasons. Her combination with fellow squad member Jo Weston grew from strength to strength in 2017, challenging some of the world’s best shooters. She has been named for the first time in the Diamonds squad.

Bassett capped off the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season with her first national league premiership, a win with Sunshine Coast Lightning. She broke her personal best international record in the third test of the Constellation Cup, with 55 goals from 64 attempts at 86% accuracy in 2016. Bassett is the most experienced member of the 2017/18 Samsung Diamonds squad.

After debuting in England in 2013, Brandley made her return to the international stage in January 2016. She made the move from Perth to Melbourne in 2017 to join Magpies Netball, combining with fellow Diamonds defender Sharni Layton. Brandley and Layton’s connection has never been stronger. The reliable defender is an exciting workhorse with an impressive leap.

Defensive powerhouse Phoenix Karaka has quickly moved up the ranks to be a formidable asset to the New Zealand Silver Ferns. The 23-year-old made her international debut just three years ago in a final minute cameo against England, and has since notched up 15 caps. Karaka’s ability to move comfortably between the two in-circle defensive positions may challenge her Quad Series opponents. An Auckland native, Karaka has a strong all-round skill set with her movement and ball handling ability. Representing the Central Pulse in the New Zealand domestic league in 2017, Karaka was ranked first in the league for

rebounds, ninth for deflections and sixth for intercepts. She formed a strong combination with fellow Silver Fern Katrina Grant at a domestic level, helping to lead the Pulse to the inaugural Grand Final. Attention will be on whether this strong partnership can also translate to the international stage.

Karla Mostert wrote herself into the history books, becoming the first Grand Final Player of the Match in Suncorp Super Netball. The South African international made a name for herself during the Suncorp Super Netball season, becoming the first South African to play in an Australian domestic league, after signing with the Sunshine Coast Lightning. The 181cm defender developed into a force to be reckoned with during the season, challenging some of the world’s best shooters on a weekly basis.

Mostert has grown in leaps and bounds since her first Netball World Cup appearance at the 2015 Netball World Cup SYDNEY, having played 53 tests for the South Africa SPAR Proteas. Her next test will be on the international stage during the Netball Quad Series, where she will face-off against fellow Lightning teammate Caitlin Bassett. They’ve battled many times at training, but how will the pair match-up when the stakes are high?

Ranked seventh overall in the league for intercepts and gains, and 13th for deflections and defensive rebounds, Mostert was a shining light in a Lightning team full of international talent.

Jo Harten is no stranger to the international stage. The English Rose has featured in 81 Tests to date, including three Netball World Cups and three Commonwealth Games. Don’t let her experience fool you. Harten is just 28 years old and getting better with age, as seen in her stellar Suncorp Super Netball performances. Harten captained her GIANTS Netball team to the Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final, stepping in for the injured Kimberlee Green. Her leadership extended beyond captain duties, stepping up in the shooting circle when it counted the most and remaining calm in pressure situations.

28

Netball Quad Series 2017

She finished sixth overall for goals scored in the Suncorp Super Netball season (457), with 74 goals scored from long range, the third most in the league. Harten played against many of her English teammates during Suncorp Super Netball, including Geva Mentor in the Grand Final. All eyes will be on Harten and how she can transfer her Suncorp Super Netball form onto the international stage.

What is it and how can it help our netballers reduce the chances of injury? “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” We’ve all heard the old saying, but can this really apply to the specifics of a netball injury? Alanna Antcliff, physiotherapist to the Samsung Diamonds, thinks so – through her extensive research and resulting program she has developed, in conjunction with netballing professionals, a movement efficiency program to help prevent knee injuries in netball. An alarming statistic recently was announced, with ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries in 2016 accounting for 364 years of rehabilitation for netballers in Australia. Any netballer can tell you that the most commonly injured body parts are knees and ankles, with ACL injuries representing approximately 25% of all serious injuries. The majority of these injuries occur when landing, and having spent years standing on sidelines watching players of varying ages and ability move on court, Alanna knows the stress placed on the lower limbs due to the demands of netball itself, and it was clear that movement patterns of netballers generally could be improved upon. When developing the KNEE Program, it became clear that injury prevention programs did exist in other sports however there was no such program that was specific to the unique demands of netball. After two years of painstaking research, the program began to take shape. The core understanding was acknowledging "at risk" movements and the key elements to effective technique in preventing were devised in accordance with literature. For example, knowing that the majority of ACL injuries occur on landing and change of direction, meant that maximising technique of these movements became a priority. These techniques can be applied to participant players right up to use at representative level with the Diamonds, as the program is designed for any netballer at any age. The teachings can assist in educating athletes themselves, coaches along with support staff. By improving a players muscle activation prior to activity, mazimising their take off and landing technique and enhancing their netball specific agility, it will improve the efficiency and safety of on court movement hence helping to prevent injury. So what’s the program all about? Read the full article at: netball.com.au

CONFIDENT GIRLS FOUNDATION how your money helped

FUNDRAISER Biloela Netball Association The small country town of Biloela in Central Queensland saw their netball teams unite to show their support in empowering vulnerable girls around Australia. Their fundraising event turned the courts into a sea of purple, as some teams wore purple ribbons, others socks and tutus, while a few even made their own shirts. The event was a huge success raising $288 and all involved were proud of how they all came together for the cause.

HOW THEIR FUNDRAISING HELPED: Aussie Aussie is an 11-year-old girl living with her family in the small town of Nhill, Victoria, as a part of the Karen refugee community. For Aussie, organised women’s sport was never a thought, let alone an option.

The cost for Aussie to continue to play netball, not only supports her as she puts on a bib every weekend, but has additional benefits for the wider Nhill and Karen community.

With financial support from the Confident Girls Foundation, Aussie can continue to participate in the sport she has grown to love. She can further immerse herself into the community and grow, learn and thrive both on and off the netball court.

The money required to allow Aussie to follow her passion was not exuberant, however the intangible benefits have influenced so many within her community, helping to create a unified multicultural community in Nhill.

FUNDRAISER Fintona Girls’ School The students at Fintona Girls’ School in Melbourne showed their support for vulnerable girls by holding a Year 12 student vs. staff netball match. The students were out on a mission to show their teachers who was boss on the court. Spectators provided a gold coin donation to watch the exciting game. It was the experience of the staff that walked away as victors, 29 to 12, but the real winners of the day are the girls who are now provided with the opportunities to become empowered and thrive.

HOW THEIR FUNDRAISING HELPED: Indulkuna Anagu School in the APY Lands South Australia The Indulkana Anagu School is located in the APY lands, five hours south of Alice Springs. Their biggest challenge is ensuring that students attend school and behave in class, through the Federal Government’s Remote School Attendance Strategy, their newest initiative is encouraging school attendance and behaviour through sport.

Students who have attended and behaved in school are allowed to participate in an after-school program of Inclusion NetSetGO, which is financially supported by the Confident Girls Foundation. With makeshift courts and portable netball rings, the 15 to 20 students who attend each week are having fun playing games whilst seeing improved educational outcomes and physical, mental and social wellbeing.
