HERE COME THE GIANTS I would like to welcome all of our members and fans to Round 14, the last round of the regular Suncorp Super Netball season. What a season it has been! Your GIANTS have put on a spectacular display of elite netball all season and have proved to be a match for each and every team in the league. The introduction of the bonus points system has turned the game on its head, with the highly competitive makeup of the league meaning that positions on the ladder have dramatically changed from week to week. The GIANTS have excelled in using this to their advantage, especially when they have maintained a controlled, steady and strong game. A team united in purpose, they have continued to grow as a group and learn from each game played and I am so proud of how far they have come together this season. Each week the GIANTS team have been working hard to remain in the front of the pack and have not slowed down their pace as they have led a strong campaign to stay in the Top 4. The only other team to do so is the one that we face today – West Coast Fever. Today’s game is one that will test both sides, with the minor premiership and home advantage for the Suncorp Super Netball Major Semi Final up for grabs.

This round, GIANTS Netball return home to Sydney. It’s so special to be able to play our last game of the regular season at home in front of our wonderful members and fans. This season – only our second season as a club – we have played at four different venues across NSW and ACT, with record membership. Thank you for being with us every step of the way, no matter when or where we play.

SPOTLIGHT GIANTS V FEVER GIANTS Netball last played West Coast Fever in Round 6 at Perth Arena, suffering their second loss of the 2018 season (63-61) after an intense sixty minutes of netball. With Fever sitting in top spot on the ladder and GIANTS just one point behind in second place, this game will decide who takes the minor premiership and secures home advantage for the Suncorp Super Netball Major Semi Final. The Round 6 game saw both teams display impressive strategies and implement strong defensive tactics across the court to build and strengthen their respective goal margins. For the last game of the regular season, both teams will be out to secure the victory and every point up for grabs in order to secure advantage ahead of the finals.
ESSEX ELITE Reaching 100 national league games is quite the milestone. English export and honourary Aussie Jo Harten looks back on her career from her 2012 debut to Super Netball success. For GIANTS Netball shooter Jo Harten, the journey to 100 elite national netball games has been one that has gone by in the blink of an eye, although it has involved quite a bit of globe-trotting. The superstar from Essex England marked her 100th national game during Round 11 of the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season. Harten has worn GIANTS orange for 28 of those games after playing 72 matches in the former ANZ Championship (26 for Mainland Tactix from 2012-13 and 46 for Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic from 2014-16). “I think it has gone pretty fast getting to my hundredth game out here. I can remember vividly playing my first ANZ game… I think I was 22. Now I'm 29,” says Harten. “Seven years has kind of flown by and yeah it's cool to kind of be at this milestone in my career.” It is a career that spans multiple continents and countless memorable moments and Harten is appreciative of the opportunities afforded to her and understands she is fortunate to be able to reach 100 games. “I never expected to rack up a hundred games over this side of the world. I think the opportunity that I've been afforded in my career has been phenomenal,” she says. “I've been quite lucky in terms of injuries - touch wood - and I've you know kept my body in position where I think I've only missed one game in that seven years," she continues. "I'm pretty proud of that.” While it’s not always easy playing so far from home and she misses her loved ones, Harten is enjoying getting to go to work every day doing what she loves. Harten says she feels lucky to have been able to play with elite clubs and work with some of the most talented players and coaches in the world. It certainly has been a driving force behind her decision to play so far from home. “I'm extremely lucky to have different clubs come my way and different coaches, one of them being JFitz (GIANTS Netball
Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald) as well. I'm extremely lucky to have been under her (in the Magic and GIANTS) and I pay credit to the relationship I have with her for keeping me over this side of the world for as long as I have,” says Harten. “You know sometimes you do miss your family loads and they are 24 hours away on a plane,” she adds. “But for me it's an opportunity – an opportunity to play with the best people in the world in the best league in the world and to do something I love ultimately. So yeah not too much of a sacrifice if I'm enjoying myself and my career I suppose.” There are certainly many achievements for Harten to be proud of through her career, both at the national and international level. There are a few moments that stand out though. “I think the defining moments throughout my career down under have been the first games for each of my clubs,” Harten explains. “So the first game playing for the Tactix (and) making it out this side of the world. My first game for the Magic, that really I suppose was a benchmark for me in that time playing under Julie, playing with some really cool Silver Ferns and people like that - they took my career to the next level. And then of course playing my first game for the GIANTS, playing for an Australian franchise (and) making Sydney home was really special and I'll remember that forever. “The Commonwealth Games Gold Medal was obviously the pinnacle of my career so far. There is more that I want to achieve. I want to contest for a championship out this side of the world. We got to the Grand Final with the GIANTS last year, but I want to go the whole way. I think everyone does at least once in their careers. So that's still up there for me,” she says. As to what she has learnt over her career, Harten, who displays resilience, passion and determination at all times on court, is typically frank and thoughtful in her assessment. “Some wins are a lot better than others and some wins are more hard-fought than others and some losses are harder to take as well, but I think you learn and it's all about learning. You know if you play 100 games and you don't learn anything you're a bit silly,” she shares. “It's about the different experiences; take the good with the bad.” ¼

A GIANT CAREER Susan Pettitt has had an incredible netball career at both national and international levels. When Pettitt puts away her netty shoes for the final time at the end of the Suncorp Super Netball 2018 season, it will be the end of an incredible professional netball journey.

DIAMOND DEBUT Dynamic GIANTS Netball midcourter Jamie-Lee Price was recently named to the 2018/19 Samsung Australian Diamonds squad, capping off an impressive 2018 season and proving that she is certainly one to watch. She’s a step closer to realising her childhood dream and Jamie-Lee Price is thrilled to have been named to the 2018/19 Samsung Australian Diamonds squad. For 22-year-old Price, it has long been something she has hoped to achieve and getting the call from Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander telling her she had made the squad was a special moment. “It was really exciting to get the call from Lisa (Alexander). This is what I have wanted and (have) been working towards. This is why I moved home (from New Zealand) – to become a Diamonds player. “For her (Alexander) to give me a call was exciting and I was hoping obviously for good news. My heart was beating really fast. “It means a lot to be named to the squad and hopefully go on to represent Australia on the court. That’s pretty special and it’s always been a dream of mine growing up,” she says. Despite her young age, it may come as a surprise to some that Price has played 74 elite games at the national level (tonight’s game will make it 75) and she is confident in the experience she has accumulated over that time. “This year I feel like I’m ready. I feel like I’ve been doing things differently in a good way to help my performance and to help me as an athlete and to help my teammates. “I’ve learned a lot from experienced players in our team like Kim (Green), Susan (Pettitt), Bec (Bulley), Jo (Harten) and Serena (Guthrie) and all those players. I am quite fortunate to play with girls like that. “Making the move over here (from New Zealand), the intensity has lifted a lot, as has the style of the game, which is good for me. That’s why I originally wanted to move over here – to be the best netballer that I can be, but also challenge myself as well,” Price shares. Having been named to the Diamonds squad is a massive achievement, but Price isn’t losing sight of the fact that the
teams still need to be named, starting with the 2018 Quad Series Team and 2018 Constellation Cup Team. Then of course there is the World Cup in 2019. “They will announce the teams after the Grand Final, which is nerve-wracking but it's exciting at the same time because I have the opportunity to potentially make the team. “If I made a team it would honestly be such a proud moment, not just for me but for my family. Just to be able to sing the National Anthem in green and gold. “If I could go to the World Cup that would be actually really exciting. It would be a dream come true really,” says Price. Price is excited by the opportunity to potentially make a team, but she isn’t going to let the looming announcement distract her from her game. “I don't think there's any pressure on me at all. I think it's a great opportunity for me. I just need to play how I've been playing and play well with my GIANTS girls. I think we work well together as a team. “That’s going to be my main focus for now. Working together with my teammates and getting to that Grand Final and getting the win, which is still the main goal, and just continuing on with how I’ve been playing and enjoying myself,” she says. ¼

EFFECTIVE USE OF 'GIVE AND GO' A dominant 'give and go' play out of defence has been a traditional part of the Australian game plan for a number of years. When executed effectively this play sets up the forward line for a smooth transition to goal. In fact, wherever this skill is used on the court, it gives the attacking team the ascendancy on their opposition. Drill 1 demonstrates the skill in isolation. Use your imagination to build up to match play scenarios.
