president’s message

The International Netball Federation extends a warm welcome to you all here at Vector Arena for what promises to be another fantastic FAST5 Netball World Series in Auckland. It’s hard to believe 12 months has passed by since we were here together for the inaugural FAST5 Netball World Series and I’m excited to be part of this new evolution of netball, as it catches the world’s attention and imagination.

2

We are well on the way of reaching our goals with the FAST5 form of the game in recruiting new players, winning friends and bringing netball to an even wider audience than the 70 affiliated national associations throughout the world.

of Auckland for their help and support in making the event possible. I’d also like to acknowledge our broadcasters SKY Sport and the Radio Network who are tasked with taking the FAST5 concept to the world.

Now the concept of FAST5 has well and truly caught on, the event in Auckland this November will be taken to new levels with more dynamic netball on court, inspiring crowd participation and a party atmosphere that is the making of the Series.

And finally thank you to all of our netball fans and good luck to all six teams as they put their hearts and souls into making the FAST5 Netball World Series so special.

Our key stakeholders are also very important to us, ensuring a successful event. Thank you to our commercial sponsors, the talented staff, officials from all around the world and the many volunteers who work so hard to make the FAST5 Netball World Series the success that it is. With the FAST5 Netball World Series an important part of INF International Events Calendar, we are grateful to the New Zealand Government and the City

Honourable Molly Rhone OJ CD President of INF

Fast5 welcome Six of the world’s top netballing nations are back at Vector Arena for the second consecutive year, as the Fast5 Netball World Series establishes its place as a key event in Netball’s international sporting calendar. The Australian Fast5 flyers, England Fives, Jamaican Sunshine Girls, SPAR Proteas, Malawi Queens and hosts the Fast5 Ferns, will once again compete to be the Fast5 Netball World Series champions in 2013.

The Fast5 Netball World Series captured the hearts and minds of netballing nations around the world in 2012 and we are delighted to deliver another chapter of this dynamic game to Auckland. The party atmosphere created at Vector Arena last year will no doubt be surpassed in 2013 as visitors to the event continue to embrace this thrilling shortened form of the traditional game and adorn themselves in their nations’ colours to celebrate what is a festival of netball.

I’d like to acknowledge the International Netball Federation (INF) and chair Molly Rhone for their unswerving support of the Fast5 Netball World Series as it continues to grow in popularity. This type of event would not be possible without the backing of our key supporters; Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and the New Zealand Government and our fantastic sponsors who help to make this unique international event possible. Thanks to Barfoot & Thompson, Yahoo!, KPMG and Classic Hits; and official suppliers Canterbury of New Zealand and Gilbert.

The Fast5 Netball World Series is taken around the world by our superb broadcast partners SKY Sport who have committed to show every minute of action LIVE over the three days of competition. Along with our radio broadcast partner, The Radio Network’s Radio Sport, this dynamic version of netball is taken to the masses and feedback over the last 12 months has been phenomenal. Of course, we all know events on this scale can’t happen without a workforce of talented and capable volunteers who jump in boots and all to make this tournament the success that it is. We are tremendously grateful for the effort and enthusiasm they put into everything they do. It truly is Netball like you’ve never seen. Enjoy!

from fastnet to fast5 – a history A fast and furious version of Netball was launched in England five years ago when the World Netball Series was introduced to the netballing world as FASTNET. The world’s top six netballing nations were brought together to play under new rules including six-minute quarters, rolling substitutions, two point shots from outside the traditional Netball circle and exciting power-play quarters. Netball’s biggest stars stepped onto court in Manchester in 2009 for the first FASTNET edition and it was New Zealand, despite mixed results in round-robin play, which lifted the spoils for the first time. One year later, the tournament was again played in Liverpool and most of the six national coaches took the opportunity to introduce new players to the shorter form of the game. New Zealand again, took home the FASTNET trophy and it wasn’t until 2011 that England broke through to win their first FASTNET championship beating New Zealand in the final by seven goals. The evolution of this dynamic form of Netball took another step forward in 2012

16

with the introduction of FAST5, played for the first time at the FAST5 Netball World Series in Auckland. Similar to FASTNET, the changes included on-court team numbers reduced from seven to five players and three goal scoring zones, with New Zealand selected to host the tournament for the next three years. The success of the FAST5 Netball World Series at Vector Arena in Auckland is set to continue in 2013 as both players

and spectators soak up the party atmosphere, the tense and exciting games and the exhibition of dynamic Netball that is FAST5. All six teams are back; FAST5 Ferns, Australian FAST5 Flyers, Jamaican Sunshine Girls, Malawi Queens, England Fives and the SPAR Proteas from South Africa and there’s no doubt they’ll come prepared for what is building up as the greatest netball extravaganza of the year.

An in-circle defender of outstanding quality, Casey Kopua returns to the New Zealand Fast5 squad to help defend this year’s World Series title after missing the tournament last year with injury. A classy all-round defender, the long limbed Silver Ferns captain is well known for her aerial skills and unmatched ability to pick off timely intercept ball. A strong carrier, Kopua, 28, also lends a valuable hand with her through court attacking presence.

Fleet-footed midcourter Laura Langman has fashioned an enviable record on the international stage. Regarded as the best centre in the world, Langman, 27, is renowned for her athleticism and ability to cover large tracks of the court. A tireless and dogged competitor, the fast-paced environment of Fast5 is a perfect fit for the talented Silver Ferns vice-captain who will be a key figure in the team’s engine room, both on attack and defensively.

With the ability to play wing attack and goal attack equally well, Silver Fern Anna Thompson has thrived in the shorter version of the game. Thompson, 27, has the rare distinction of being the only player to represent New Zealand at all four World Netball Series tournaments which included winning last year’s inaugural Fast5 Netball World Series. Thompson’s timing, ability to read play, precision off-loads and shooting prowess make her a valuable asset.

A newcomer to the shorter version of the game, Courtney Tairi will add variety to the Fast5 Ferns midcourt. Born in Australia to New Zealand parents, Tairi, 25, made her debut for the Silver Ferns this year after previously representing Australia at under-21 level. Well versed in the Australian style, Tairi offers a different type of play which will suit this format, her height being an added bonus both on attack and defensively.

The naturally talented Catherine Latu makes a return to the Fast5 Ferns after missing out last year. Blessed with soft hands, nimble footwork and an eye for the gap, Latu, 27, is a natural fit for the shorter version of the game. An imposing presence, Latu’s deft ball skills and body movement are ideally suited to the innovative style of Fast5. Latu’s deceptive exploits in the goal circle create openings and opportunities for those around her.

Katrina Grant has built an outstanding reputation for her defensive qualities. The Central Pulse captain presents all the hallmarks required of an in-circle defender with the ability to switch from a tight marking situation to a hunting role. Ever-alert to intercept opportunities, Grant’s reliable hands and quick feet give her a strong presence when turning defence into attack. A colourful character who thrives under pressure, Grant, 26, has all the attributes to be a game-breaker.

A newcomer to the Fast5 Ferns, late bloomer Katarina Cooper has had a year to savour. Dynamic and strongly built, the midcourter was the bolter in the Silver Ferns squad for 2013-14 and now gets her chance in the shorter version of the game. The naturally talented and versatile Cooper, 27, has a strong netball pedigree and is able to play all three midcourt positions, making her a valuable asset as both an attacker and defender.

An up and coming talent, Shannon Francois has made considerable strides in a memorable 2013, capped with a return to the Fast5 Ferns after making her debut in the shortened version of the game in 2011. Francois, 23, was also called into the Silver Ferns team for the Australian leg of the Constellation Cup series this year. Another versatile player, Francois’ ability to operate in all three midcourt positions adds valuable strike power.

Defender Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit has quietly been leaving her mark on the netball landscape for many years. With her career continuing to gain momentum, Selby-Rickit, 24, has provided an important cog in the shortened version of the game since making her debut in 2010. In the longer version, her deceptive reach and agile movement have left an impressionable imprint, leading to a call-up to the Silver Ferns this year. A seemingly unobtrusive player, Selby-Rickit adds a formidable presence.

A naturally gifted shooter, Maria Tutaia has fashioned an enviable record as the long range specialist. Blessed with an unflappable temperament, Tutaia’s silky and smooth execution from all points of the circle make her a key performer in the shortened version of the game where double points come into play. The ability to shoot accurately from nearly anywhere sets Tutaia, 26, apart from other shooters and her growing defensive game is an added bonus.
