Media Guide 2015 New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy New Zealand, Fiji & South Africa
Taini Jamison Trophy Taini Jamison is an icon in New Zealand Netball - the first woman to coach a New Zealand team to victory in a World Championship, in 1967. So it’s only fitting that a trophy fought for by the best in international Netball bears her name. The Taini Jamison Trophy was introduced in 2008, to be contested when any netballing nation – other than Australia – plays the Silver Ferns at home.

A Mango Pare (hammerhead shark) pattern features around the top and base of the trophy, signifying strength, tenacity, perseverance, stealth, keen senses and cunning – all the assets of a champion team. Taini Jamison’s Rotorua Netball Maori motif is front and centre, honouring an exceptional Netball personality and the perfect example of someone who gives back to the sport she loves.

Shooter Jodi Brown has defied the odds several times in continuing a remarkable international career which started 13 years ago. An astute reader of the game, Brown possesses an unflappable temperament in the heat of battle, her calmness being one of her defining trademarks. Equally adept at both shooting positions, Brown’s playmaking skills shine from goal attack with her innate ability to set up play. After stepping aside from international Netball in 2007 to start a family, the mother of two made a remarkable return five years later following a strong season for the Steel in 2012. Instinctive court craft, ball skills, perception and ability to orchestrate attacking momentum are the key attributes in Brown’s impressive armoury. Renowned for a consistently high work rate, Brown’s volume of shots and accuracy have improved with time, her variety in style offering another option in the Silver Ferns mix.

Hints of Kayla Cullen’s undoubted talent were highlighted when named in the New Zealand team which successfully defended the 2010 and 2011 World FastNet title without their Silver Ferns, as a teenager. Cullen scooped the 2011 ANZ Championship Best Young Player award while also making the All-Star team and has been with the Northern Mystics since 2010. Progressing through the NZ Secondary School ranks and the NZU21 Squad, Cullen was just 19 when making her Silver Ferns debut. A major knee injury in 2013 curtailed Cullen’s progress but stellar showings during 2015 have highlighted the talented athlete is back to her best. Speed off the mark, ability in the air and genuine athleticism have made Cullen a versatile player. Strong defensive qualities combined with an attacking flair make her equally comfortable at either wing or goal defence while she is also no stranger to centre.

SHANNON FRANCOIS
Positions: GD, GK Height: 1.90m DOB: 9 July 1977 Test Caps: 124 (90 NZ, 34 RSA) Silver Ferns Squad: 2002–08, 2010–15 Test Debut: 26 February 2003 v England, in England
Positions: C, WA Height: 1.78m DOB: 12 October 1990 Test Caps: 14 Silver Ferns Squad: 2012–2015 Test Debut: 4 October 2013 v Australia, in Adelaide
Leana de Bruin began her international career in South Africa where she played 34 Tests for her country of birth. She moved to New Zealand in 2000 where she progressed to the Silver Ferns squad two years later.
Hard-working Southern Steel midcourter Shannon Francois got her break for higher honours in 2012 when called into the Silver Ferns squad as cover. She quickly made her mark with her speed and fitness levels.
Following a stellar 2011 for the Southern Steel, when she jointly won the ANZ Championship Most Valuable Player award, de Bruin enjoyed an even more memorable 2012 with Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, who went on to win the trans-Tasman title for the first time.
Named in the Silver Ferns team for the Australian leg of the 2013 Constellation Cup, Francois earned her first Cap against the Australian Diamonds in the third Test Match in Adelaide.
De Bruin was a standout, capping her season with a Player of the Match outing against the Melbourne Vixens in the Final. She has chalked up a century of internationals between South Africa and her adopted home. Standing at 1.90m, de Bruin is naturally athletic, her mobility, strength in the air and long reach being the perfect assets for a top line defender.
Francois is renowned for her strong work and training ethic and covers plenty of ground on court. Reliable and efficient in the midcourt, Francois has continued to build on her repertoire and is also a strong defensive player. Francois can match it with the best through her dogged determination, relentless commitment and ability to execute. In the ANZ Championship, Francois has found her niche with the Southern Steel. She has gone on to become an integral member since joining them in 2012. 13

Positions: GK, GD Height: 1.86m DOB: 6 November 1993 Test Caps: 3 Silver Ferns Squad 2014-2015 Test Debut: 20 January, 2014 v England in London
Rangy defender Katrina Grant has built an impressive record during her time in the Silver Ferns after being one of a number to progress to the senior ranks from the 2005 World Youth Championship winning New Zealand under-21 team.
The stature of promising young defender Phoenix Karaka has continued to grow during an impressive ANZ Championship with the Southern Steel in 2015.
Now a senior member of the Silver Ferns, Grant presents all the hallmarks required of an in-circle defender with the ability to switch from a tight marking situation to a hunting role. Ever-alert to intercept opportunities, Grant’s reliable hands and quick feet give her a strong presence when turning defence into attack. Captain of the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship, Grant’s game has continued to blossom. The athletic and versatile defender can seamlessly switch between the two incircle defensive positions as well as cover the wing defence role.
14
www.SilverFerns.co.nz
Able to move comfortably between the two in-circle defensive positions, Karaka has been a shining light in 2015 with her continued maturity and regular court time. Karaka is developing into a classy defender with her athleticism, tight marking, ability in the air and sense of awareness for the intercept. Rising through the NZ U21 and NZ Secondary Schools teams, Karaka was injected into the travelling squad for the tour to the United Kingdom in 2014, making her Silver Ferns debut in the final minute of the Test Match against England. She also took the court in the three exhibition matches against the Scottish Thistles and England A, and gained further experience when included in the Silver Ferns tour to Fiji in early 2015.

Positions: C, WA, WD Height: 1.73m DOB: 16 April 1986 Test Caps: 116 Silver Ferns Squad: 2004-2015 Debut: 12 March, 2005 v England in Auckland
An in-circle defender of outstanding quality, Casey Kopua received the ultimate accolade in 2009 when assuming the Silver Ferns captaincy at the relatively young age of 24. Kopua fulfilled her early promise making her international debut on the end of season tour to Jamaica in 2005. She showed her durability in 2006 when she played half of the Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning match with a fractured bone in her foot. During 2014, Kopua captained the Silver Ferns for a record 62nd time, eclipsing Lyn Parker’s long-held record of 61 Tests as captain. Setting the on-court standards with her strength in the air and throughcourt carries, others feed off Kopua’s sheer determination, a captain who leads by example. Kopua was awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Netball in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2011.
Dynamic midcourter Laura Langman has been an automatic selection since making her debut in 2005. The fleet-footed Langman capped a meteoric rise in elite Netball when elevated to the Silver Ferns in 2005. She has gone on to fashion an enviable record and now boasts the second highest number of Test Caps for the Silver Ferns, behind Irene van Dyk. Langman is renowned for her high work rate and energy levels. Her athleticism and neversay-die attitude have often proved gamechanging attributes. Highly respected, Langman has become one of the most influential and respected midcourters in world Netball. A senior member of the Silver Ferns, Langman is capable of playing all three midcourt positions. Widely admired, Langman’s standing in the game was recognised when she was named co-captain of the Silver Ferns during 2008 and has gone on to captain the team in several Tests since then. 15

MALIA PASEKA
Positions: GS, GA, WA Height: 1.87m DOB: 27 May 1989 Test Caps: 12 Silver Ferns Squad: 2012-2015 Test Debut: 14 October 2012 v South Africa, in Adelaide
Positions: GA, GS Height: 1.83m DOB: 23 September 1994 Test Caps: 0 Silver Ferns Squad: 2015
Impressing selectors during national trials in 2012, Bailey Mes was the bolter in the squad and went on to play Tests in the midcourt and the shooting circle that year.
A rare talent with all the hallmarks of a quality player, 20-year-old shooter Malia Paseka’s short career has already made significant strides.
A serious knee injury dashed her chances of Silver Ferns selection in 2013 but she bounced back to regain selection the following year and was a key performer in the FAST5 Ferns successfully defending their FAST5 Netball World Series title.
Born in Auckland, Paseka spent 10 years in Sydney before moving back to New Zealand, and played her first year of the ANZ Championship with the Northern Mystics in 2013.
A dynamic player, Mes has reverted to the shooting circle in recent times where her out-and-out athletic ability sets the platform. Fleet-footed and possessing an impressive standing jump, the 1.87m Mes has all the necessary attributes to make a quality shooter while her accuracy rates continue to improve. Looking for more court time, Mes moved to the Mainland Tactix for the 2015 ANZ Championship after spending five years at the Northern Mystics. 16
www.SilverFerns.co.nz
2013 proved a defining year, playing an influential role in the NZU21 team’s standout win in the World Youth Netball Championships. Later that year, Paseka was named as one of four training partners to accompany the Silver Ferns on their tour of England and Scotland. Playing for Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2014-15, Paseka’s game has continued to flourish.

GRACE RASMUSSEN
MARIA TUTAIA
Positions: WA, GA, C Height: 1.77m DOB: 18 March 1988 Test Caps: 17 Silver Ferns Squad: 2009–2013, 2014–2015 Test Debut: 7 August 2010 v Samoa, in Wellington
Positions: GA, GS Height: 1.88m DOB: 18 February 1987 Test Caps: 92 Silver Ferns Squad: 2005–2015 Test Debut: 13 November 2005 v Jamaica, in Jamaica
A player of enormous talent, Grace Rasmussen’s influence in the pivot’s position of wing attack has reached new heights in the last two years. Growing consistency in her all-round play where Rasmussen’s specialities are quickness off the line, silky feeding skills, a high work rate and determined defensive efforts, have combined to produce an accomplished and clever wing attack. Rasmussen cut her teeth in international Netball at the 2005 World Youth Netball Championships as part of the winning NZU21 side. In 2009, Rasmussen travelled to England as a training partner for the Silver Ferns, and was included in the Ferns squad soon after. Of Samoan origin, it was a special moment for Rasmussen to make her Silver Ferns’ debut against Samoa in Porirua in 2010. She had frequent court time in pool play at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi on the way to New Zealand’s gold medal win.
A naturally gifted shooter, Maria Tutaia has been a mainstay of the Silver Ferns for a decade. One of the most feared shooters in world Netball with her ability to convert shots from all points of the circle, Tutaia made her debut for the Silver Ferns in 2005, the same year she was part of the World Youth Cup-winning New Zealand under-21 team. The stylish Tutaia became a regular in the Silver Ferns starting line-up by the end of 2006. Tutaia’s game has continued to flourish, maturity and a wealth of experience adding to her considerable skill set. A graceful athlete, Tutaia has continued to evolve, her repertoire growing alongside her general attacking and defensive games. Tuatia’s ability to shoot accurately from long range sets her apart, while her elevation to the Mystics captaincy in 2013 has added to her all-round development and senior status in the Silver Ferns. 17

Sera started playing Netball at age nine as a shooter and moved to the defensive end while at high school. She plays in the Suva Netball Association, and in 2011 was selected as a New World Ambassador, a program which sponsored three athletes for two years. She credits this program as being a major boost in her Netball career when in 2011 she made her debut for the national team still as an U21 player. Sera works part-time, has a young daughter and lists the Silver Ferns as her toughest opponent to date.
